Topic: Sounds of Trumpet - Q&A
Subject: World and Character creation Information

The world in this game is pretty much the same as the one the players live in. Historic events are exactly the same, goverment structures are alike and so on. The difference is mostly hidden from the players at the start of the game.

Players begin the game with a character made with the 2nd edition Mutants & Masterminds rules. There are no specific house-rules that need to be kept in mind when creating these characters. Almost any power is allowed, but multiple, unrelated powers are discouraged (but not entirely banned). Banned powers include Magic and Device; this is not a magical world and character are not to rely of super-science technology. I, as GM, allow myself to ban specific powers and feats when they are brought to my attention, or limit them so that they won't get out of hand.

Additionally, since the characters have only recently acquired these powers, certain powers are obviously useless (such as immunity to aging).

Characters begin at Power Level 8. That gives the players 120 power points to spend on their characters. Every character needs to have at least one power, even if that power is only supernatural hearing. Point is, no character can be made entirely without any power.

Every character must have at least one Complication (page 122) and/or one Drawback (page 124). Every time a character's Complication comes into play, that character regains a Hero Point.

Finally, when creating your character, consider what world he lives in. You can create a soldier, but your character won't have half of the military's armory in his garage. If I think your character needs work, I will require you to make these changes.

...the seven hands of God will touch the Earth...
-unknown author

THE END IS NIGH!!!
That is the screaming you hear from the corner of the street where you drive to work every morning. There is this homeless guy who keeps screaming the same words over and over, holding the Bible and has lost the few followers he gathered the week before.

"I was driving to work, like I always do early in the morning. I like arriving early as he.. ehm, heck to work. Skip the traffic, y'know. Anyway, I was driving to work, like I said I was, when I heard this thundering sound in the sky, but there weren't any clouds there. I looked from the road for only a brief second, and when I looked back there was this guy standing an inch away in front of the car. I swear to God, I hit him. I even have the dent in my car to prove it. But when I gathered enough courage to check on the guy, he was gone. There was nothing to suggest he was even there in the first place, except for the dent in my car. Not even a drop of blood!"

Sometimes there are these events that you just can't explain. Some people call them miracles, some call them witchcraft, and some even call it heroism. A man goes running into a burning house and returns without burns. A woman lays hand on a sick child and the child is forever healed. A crowd sees a person howering over them under the clear skies.

One fine day, appearing to be completely normal when you woke up, you find yourself with an ability you did not have when you went to sleep the evening before. You can move objects with your mind or a simple gesture, you can create fire from nothing, you can fly. What ever it is that you can do, it is not normal. Is it evolution? A crazy experiment by your doctor? Are there others like you? You don't know the answers. Not yet.

For those of you who have no idea what I'm talking about, this is the Q&A thread for Sounds of Trumpet, a game of Mutants & Masterminds, 2nd edition, where the players play a group of people who suddenly find that they have a special gift. Recruitment for this game is over, unless one of more players suddenly decide to back out. You are welcome to lurk about and even join the discussion on this thread if you have a pointer or a question you want answer to about this particular M&M game. If you want to join as a possible runner up in case of a player backing out, post in the recruiting thread and not here. This is a thread for questions about the Sounds of Trumpet in particular and not for recruiting.

For you players, this is the Q&A thread for the game Sounds of Trumpet, as you may have guessed. This thread will host your questions and hopefully answers to those questions, as well as collective information of what individual characters know in general (no details). This thread also includes some information about how to make a character for this game. Finally, your characters will be stored here for safe keeping.

I saw the following setup somewhere, and found it interesting.

Q&A Content:
1 - Introduction
2 - World and Character creation information
3 - List of Players/Characters and Character knowledge
4-10 - Charactersheets
11+ - Discussion, Questions and Answers

The elevator took you down underneath the garage and as it opened it revealed your ride into town. A security truck with reinforced structure. A highly metallic vehicle, surely not suited to go against someone who could manipulate metal. The driver, an old man who looked rather fragile, directed you to sit in the back.

In the back of the truck, there was just enough room for all of you (assuming you wouldn't suddenly multiply yourself). As you all made yourself comfortable, the truck began moving.
"The plan is to let you out close to the bank, but far enough away so that Mercury won't notice the truck." The old man spoke through a opened shutter that divided you from the driver. "From there, you'll have to find a way into the bank by yourselves."

((OOC: Next update will be next Saturday. The actual mission will start then.))

Yes, Tabula Rasa is a video game. Interestingly enough, the word does not originate in that game (shock!). The first time I heard about it was in psychology class (or sociology class) where it was said to refer to the idea that a child begins blank and then it learns stuff.

Tabula Rasa is also the name of one episode in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, where the main characters all lose their memory and begin as blanks and learns stuff from assumptions. It's a funny episode.

But seriously, tabula rasa does not solely refer to a video game.

Also, I heard the same thing about counting grains (or what have you) and sunlight.

I must admit that I haven't heard ot any either, but I haven't heard of anything that says they survived in sunlight. We can't really tell either way until we do, can we?

I never said that that running water, being sockless or grains in a jar killed vampires, and I did notice that you were talking about killing vampires. Your discussion of how to kill vampires according to legend only reminded me of these tricks to keep them at bay (possibly even keeping them occupied long enough to kill them).

I don't remember the part about grains in the story of Dracula, although I admit I have only seen the movie and not read the book (which I completely agree I should read), so how can you claim that it was not Stoker's idea that vampires are not killed by sunlight? Sure, some guy made a move that is said to be the origin of that legend, but who is to say that is correct? And what, I like to ramble and disagree with people. It's in my nature.

And I forgot some weapons which do work perfectly against vampires in WoD at range. Thrown edge weapons such as hatchets and knives, crossbows and normal bows. Arrows can even be lit on fire for increased effect. Even without flaming tips, these weapons deal lethal damage to vampires. Just thought I'd throw them in there.

EDIT: The original post was probably referring to hollywoodized version of vampires and werewolves, as seen in most modern media (such as Underworld, Twilight and what have you). In that respect, werewolves would still kick the vampires' butts.

To correct you, the issue of silver weapons being crap has been covered in WoD, in a supplement known as Armory to be precise. Silver causes a -1 penalty to all weapons that make any actual use of it (bullets in a gun, swords of silver) and any Dramatic Failure will more often than not ruin the weapon completely. I'm writing this by memory, there might be more detail in the actual book.

Additionally, there are several other tricks to get rid of vampires. According to some legends, vampires have a compulsion for counting. Leave a jar of grain near your window and the vampire will stop to count every single grain. If the vampire is still counting when you wake up, shake the jar. The vampire must begin again.

Another legend says that vampires can't live (figurately speaking) with only one sock and will search everywhere for the missing sock should it get lost. So if you somehow manage to steal the monster's sock, put a stone in it and throw it into the river, the vampire will literally search forever for the sock unless someone brings the sock to him from the river.

Vampires can't cross rivers. I think it says somewhere that vampires can't cross running water of any kind.

Salt holds all evil at bay, if I remember correctly, and that counts vampires.

The first time I heard that silver killed werewolves, you had to shoot the werewolf with silver bullets three times in the heart. It had to be the heart and it had to be three times. And it had to be a bullet. Not sure if anything else could kill a werewolf, can't remember.

There is no way of arguing that Bram Stoker had a big hand in making vampires so popular, if it was not his hand alone that did all the work. However, legends of vampires did exist before Bram Stoker wrote Dracula and I'd like to point out that in those legends the sunlight might have been a bane to vampires. I'd like to point out that I'm not well versed in those legends, but if anyone is he/she can point out my folly if there is one.

Vorrioch: Yes, 171 of WtF says that werewolf claws deal lethal damage unless they are using a Gift. I, however, like to believe that werewolf's natural weapons are magically enhanced by nature, or well enough to deal aggravated damage to vampires. Like you said, it's a matter of perspective.
I'd like to make a test of this, but I doubt I'll find all the material I'd need to conduct the experiment

On page 171 in Vampire: the Requiem, Vampires suffer aggravated damage from magically enhanced werewolf claws. This can be debated if werewolf claws are naturally magical or they need to be further enhanced do deal aggravated damage to vampires. I personally go with the former, but the latter is also possible.

However, I disagree that werewolves can't deal aggravated damage to vampires with guns and bullets. Certainly, they can create Fetishes that can deal aggravated damage to a certain group (there is an example of this in the book) so a gun that deals aggravated damage to a vampire is not impossible.

Werewolves in Garou form have more Health than the standard vampire. But with 40 dice of damage each round I doubt it'll matter.

However, werewolves are naturally born hunters. A smart werewolf would get close to the vampire without the prey firing its weapon.

Finally, multiple attacks do not count as a single dice pool. Each attack counts as a seperate dice pool which has to be augmented seperately.

In the end, I think this would probably end up as a game of chance rather than predictable outcome

Oh, and the reason why the vampires have less chance in a full blown war than you want to believe is the innate distrust all vampires have of each other. Not to mention, not all vampires are good at fighting while all werewolves are expected to have good fighting chance against non-werewolves (natural weapons, quicker healing, increased physical attributes and Health). Additionally, because vampires are all undead, they all value their unlives much more than most mortals value their lives. Because of that, vampires are less likely to go into open warfare and thus more likely to lose if they do.

A starting vampire with a focus on combat can certainly be given the right stats to take down a werewolf in one-on-one with little trouble. However, a werewolf with the same focus can easily rip the previously mentioned vampire apart.

In order for a vampire with similar focused stats as a werewolf to be likely to win, that vampire has to stay out of the werewolf's range, probably with the use of guns. This is because a) werewolf's claws deal aggravated damage to vampires, b)werewolf's teeth deal aggravated damage to vampires, and c) werewolves gain extra Strength which means they deal extra damage. On a good day even a mortal could take down a werewolf, but generally speaking a werewolf would beat a vampire.

And the part about lycanthopy, I'd like to quote Dictionary of Phrase and Fable, published by Wordsworth Reference.
"Lycanthropy. The insanity afflicting a person who imagines himself to be some kind of animal and exhibits the tastes, voice, etc., of that animal; formerly the name given by the ancients to those who imagined themselves to be wolves (Gr. lukos, wolf, anthropos, man). The werewolf [...] has sometimes been called a lycanthrope; and lycanthropy was sometimes applied to the form of witchcraft by which witches ttansformed themselves into wolves."
What is my point with this? None, but I thought you might find it interesting

Topic: Vampires VS Lycanthropes
Subject: Well

First of all, there is no war. It is all a conspiracy created by the Mages to get everyone off their backs.

Second, I'm guessing you've been watching too much Underworld since that is the only media I've seen that calls werewolves lycans. The term lycan of course refers to lycanthropy which I personally believe is not limited to only werewolves but rather to any sort of werecreature (werepenguin anyone?).

Underworld is a cool movie, as is its sequal, but that's about it. There is no "war" to speak of, there are no sides to take. I much prefer the World of Darkness approach where there are werewolves, there are vampires and there is the common knowledge that a werewolf can kick a vampire's behind any day of the week. If there would be a side to pick, which there isn't, I would pick the winning side.

Additionally, I believe this thread should belong to the gaming surveys.

Grugg Agrees (to both the moving and werepenguins)

Subject: well then

The game starts pretty much at point zero. You, as in characters, have no idea what is going on. Hints will be presented to you through the game about what is happening. This may be something inherited, it may be the water, or perhaps the doctor you visited last week did this to you. You have no idea.

The "why me?" question may spring to mind. So far you have lived pretty normal lives. Some of you live in the suburbs, work in the postal office and doing the same lousy jobs for years. Some of you are frequent faces of the tabloids, politicians, celebrities even. Some of you may be alchoholics, spending your lives in a hole you call home after an accident made you unable to work. You may be young or old, thin or fat, black or white. Whatever you are, you are not one of a kind. If you are lucky, there are still hundreds of people out there that are living just like you and perhaps are better than you.

You are the average Jane or Joe who has been given great power. You don't know why or how. It just is.

I won't lie to you. I had been watching a lot of Heroes up until I finished my exams and that is pretty much what I'm aiming for. Earth effecting events will also be a part of the game, as well as religious matters.

I won't be going into any kind of details, though, but I hope you will find this as interesting as I do

By the way, all the positions are now taken. The recruitment officially ends now unless some of you back out for any reason. The game will start as soon as all the characters are ready and acceptable for the game.

Topic: Generations of the Requiem - Roman Nights
Subject: The drinking of wine

Minutes passed as Deodatus and Amhoset walked with the centurion, who insisted they would call him Cornilius Germanicus, to his current home. On the way, Deodatus managed to sneak out of sight for a short moment, to dispose of the wine he had drunk earlier that evening, then got back to Amhoset and Cornilius. When asked by the centurion where he had been, Deodatus lied well enough for Cornelius to believe.

The centurion's current "home" was in a clearing in the outskirts of Rome. Several tents had gathered there, where the centurion and his soldiers were staying for the time being. Only few of his men, no more than 3 or 4, could be seen as Cornelius lead Deodatus and Amhoset to the largest tent that stood in the center. Outside the tent was lit with torches, while the interior of the tent was lit with smaller lamps. Although the flames frightened the creatures of the night, Deodatus and Amhoset pushed that fear aside to pay attention to the matters at hand.

In the center of the tent was a table with four chairs and Cornelius's servant stood by the entrance. In the corner were three chests of different sizes, and on top of them was a single box, slightly bigger than a man's head, and a jar made of clay. Four poles surrounded the table and kept the roof up. On each pole hung at least two swords and at most four. On their sheaths were written Roman names.

"Felix, fetch us some of our best wine," Cornelius said as he sent his servant out. "Please, have a seat." Within moments, Felix returned with some wine and cups. Cornelius turned his attention to Deodatus. "Perhaps you would also wish to enjoy the pleasures of a woman. Would you like my servant to fetch one of my concubines? Or perhaps you, my lady? I will not judge you for your preferences in pleasure."

Drakar, I'm afraid I'll have to put you down as a "maybe". You still haven't posted once in the WoD game despite having a character, and I prefer not to give up a spot in the game to someone who doesn't intend to fill it. I'm going to say "no" to you unless you convince me otherwise.

It depends on when and if the game gets enough players to start. I still have to take care of some things, and update the games I'm currently running before I can start this one.
