Topic: Cool curses...
Subject: hmm

I had my group once encounter a cursed broadsword that changes any male into a female if they would touch it. We had a big, manly male minotaur and a female kender. Naturally, the kender wanted to touch the sword. Naturally, the minotaur didn't want her to. The minotaur's manliness kinda ended that very moment

There is no need to make a character until I know if there are enough players to get this game started (at least 3 are needed). At that time, I will post a character sheet for you to use.

Also, these are the books I recommend for this game:
-World of Darkness (core)
-Hunter: the Vigil
-Armory
-Armory Reloaded

Other books may be recommended based on character concepts, such as Tales from 13th Precinct for police-type characters.

Since others might be wondering about the system as well, I'm just going to post a description here.

Hunter: the Vigil is a sort of a sub-game within the World of Darkness (frequently known as the new World of Darkness or nWoD). It uses the same mechanics but with some minor addons.

World of Darkness is a d10 system (aka Storyteller system) that counts successes. That means it rolls X number of dice and each die showing 8 or more counts as a success. The more successes, the better the... uhm, success.

nWoD uses also a point-buy based character creation, as opposed to the D&D classical level based. Each character gets so and so many points to use in this or that group, and XP is used to "buy" more points. Let's take the Skill Firearms as an example: Firearms is in the Physical Skills group, which gets (say) 7 points. Firearms by itself gets 3 points. When Firearms gets an upgrade later on, the player spends XP to buy the 4th point.

A simple way of thinking about it is to say that each point equals one die which is rolled when the Skill is used. When making a roll, it always uses two traits, usually Attribute + Attribute or Attribute + Skill.

That is the short version. I could go into a lot more detail, but I tend to be less understandible when I do.

Subject: Neighborhood Watch Recruiting

Greetings all! I have returned with a game of Hunter: the Vigil (from the nWoD line of games).

If you are interested in staking some vampires, excorcising some demons, or just blasting your way through this week's monster, this is a game for you!

If you are familiar with HtV, this is a Tier 1 game. If you are not familiar with it, Tier 1 basically means that you're on your own; there is no larger company or conspiracy backing you up, you are not part of some high-secretive task force, and you are not some sort of Chosen.

The theme of the game is "Protect the Neighborhood at all cost." That should raise a question: How far are you willing to go to protect your friends and family in the neighborhood? Are you willing to kill? Risk your own sanity? Risk the lives of your teammates? Sacrifice a friend for the good of the many? Will you cause pain to others to protect that which you hold dear? Protecting the neighborhood is not always that simple.

Family, home, faith, revenge, violence. These are the moods of the game, meaning they are like themes within the theme. The neighborhood is your home, your neighbors are your family. When your family is hurt, the wrongdoers must pay. When demons attack, will you have faith to force them back? Are you willing to get violent to protect your family?
Characters should be built with these moods in mind, but Players are also encouraged to suggest moods they would like to include (and build their characters around).

This game will have some combat-hacks, such as increase in firearm lethality, headshots, and more. Complete list will be in the Q&A thread once it gets up and running.

And here's a little joyous gift for you: All characters are expected to be seasoned Hunters, and so they all begin with 35xp.

Now for the basic plot: As the title suggests, you are Hunters who protect a specific neighborhood. This neighborhood, located in the fictional city of Newport, is in the bad side of town. You started small, getting rid of the punks and drugdealers, and were joined together by a common sense of what is right and knowing that the law would only leave things half finished. You needed to take action, and that earned you the respect of your neighbors. But when the obvious was removed, the fine details appeared. You started paying attention to the little things, which turned out to be even bigger than you imagined. Vampires, werewolves, ghosts, and even demons roam this city, and you are fine with it, as long as they don't mess with your part of town.

I am looking for up to 4 or 5 players, willing to join the Neighborhood Watch. If recruitment goes well, the game can start as soon as this weekend.

Any questions? Ramblings? Pointless babble? Interest, perhaps?

Heya guys!

As you may have noticed, I haven't exactly been active for the past year. I've been lurking around and posting occasionally, but all in all I have not been active at all and I probably won't be for the next month.

I'd blame it on my studies at the University, but the truth is I haven't been studying that hard. My BA thesis is going to have to wait until summer (I was supposed to write it now) and I have had a lot of free time. I have no excuse, except being too lazy to actively be a part in any online games.

I got engaged last Thursday to my girlfriend after almost 6 years of being together. I have an ongoing game of Changeling: the Lost to think about. I still have not found a job for the summer. I have to start on my BA thesis from scratch. I have an exam this coming Thursday. I'm moving out of the country in September/October.

At this moment I don't have time to join or start any game, as much as I'd like to, but I thought I should tell you what I've been up to since I last was active. Mostly, I just wanted to share with my favorite forumites that I was finally engaged

I haven't created any spells myself, but I remember a group my friend was in made a spell to summon a flaming sheep that exploded on impact. I will consult with him and ask about the detailed mechanics.

If I remember correctly, a witch cannot sink since the purity of the water rejects them. So if we just throw the suspected witches into a lake with a cannon strapped to them, we should be able to prove who is a witch and who is not.

So you want us to stare at them as much as we want, but they make us go blind (assumingly by looking at them)? You, my friend, are an evil, evil man who enjoys nothing more than to see all of us go blind because of your so called "error".

In fact, I think I will not stare at the huge avatars. I think I will in fact avoid them like the plague! I laugh at your evil schemes and foil your wicked plans!

I'd say so. I don't think it is very effective for printing but if you can link a computer to a bigger screen it is very easy to switch between maps within the same campaign.

And the tutorials are all online, I'm afraid, and not part of the download.

I probably should mention that RPTools updates the MapTool pretty frequently (and the other programs less frequently) so I'm not sure what new features are with the newest update.

Relatively speaking, I could use it acceptably well after playing around with it somewhat and watching the tutorials (I recommend watching them) so I'd say they're user friendly.

If you are skilled in such things, it also allows you to program some macros to make your game more personalized and smooth. You could have a macro roll certain dice and add certain modifiers (I think), like for a Spot check. Personally, I don't use that part much because I'm not good with program languages. I'm not even sure if I'm explaining this in any understandible way.

RPTools has a program similar to dundjinni but is absolutely free. You can download a lot of free packages from their forums, including interiors. Also, if you have an existing map on your computer, you can import it. I know it supports square grids and hexigonal grids, as well as no grids, and you can use this for online games. I would highly recommend it.

It also has couple of other handy tools which are also free to download.

Or perhaps not so much.

I've been looking for a reasonably good one for a while and I just noticed there is not one here, which I find surprising. I'm talking about a Generalized Plot Hook Generator.

Why generalized? Because many of us have games that are not fantasy oriented and we need plot hooks too. Alternatly, multiple plot hook generators might be in order, seperated by genres.

So I ask you, Olan: Why do we not have such a tool yet?

There is a cool website that offers much of what Dunjinni has for free. Or at the very least everything you've mentioned so far.

I use it from time to time, but most of our gaming is offline and currently we don't use maps much.

This did not actually happen in a game I played in, but my frequent players talk about this on occasion:

In a modern setting, the players had been looking for a gun-dealer which they were going to arrest. When they found him at a bar, one of the players had a plan where she would pretend to want to buy weapons from him. A good plan, but her approach sucked. She sat down next to him and said, very plainly: "are you selling any weapons?"
While the rest of the group was laughing at the lack of subtlety, she tried to explain herself: "no, wait. Because I want to buy some."

Of course, they were playing secret agents if memory serves.

So I'll shut my mouth now.
