Subject: A little is better than nothing

Cracker moved off quickly when the man from the ship headed towards Georgia sent him away. He moved off a bit and took a quick look around. He saw the dockhand pointedly ignoring Fin and decided his shipmate must have struck out. Well, if it had gone badly, Cracker didn't want to be seen by the man with Fin. And he didn't want the two ships he had just been at to connect him to another sailor casing the place. He looked around at the ships and then moved off down the dock as if he were headed towards another ship to ask for a posting. Once he had disappeared into the crowds he moved away from the docks.

He wanted to talk to Fin about what he had learned - he didn't know much about the cargoes, but at least he knew the destination of a couple of the ships harboring here. That might prove useful. But for now he also wanted to enjoy a bit of time with his feet firmly on the ground. He found a tavern not far from the harbor called the One-Eyed Parrot and went in to find the best meal he had eaten in months.

At least that was what he hoped for. Mealy biscuits and watered down rum could only keep a man happy for so long. Real food, that was what he wanted. What he got was tavern food, but it served the purpose. It was better than ship food.

(Coming in later he does not look for or notice the remains of the fight, but if approached would help his shipmates. I'm assuming he missed all of the action while at the docks.)

Later, his meal consumed and a small dose of unwatered rum consumed, he made his way back to the ship. He'd only had a small dose of the liquid as he was due back at the ship for his turn on the watch and he wanted no part of being caught drunk on watch. Plus he was a bit nervous about the port as a whole and didn't want those on watch to be drunk anyway, whether it was him or anyone else.

Arriving back at the longboat to make his scheduled trip back he met up with Fin again. Seeing the ships Quartermaster, he offered up the information he had acquired. The nicest ship had been headed to Georgia loaded with crates of presumably valuable agricultural commodities. The other was headed towards London - and he'd had a small glance at that Cargo as well. It was something anyway.

Subject: Climbing into the dark

Dane looked at the wolves where they lay. He didn't like killing them if they were just wild animals, but the pets of goblins likely put a bit more 'wild' into the title than he wanted. And he certainly didn't want to face them and the goblins at the same time. He moved with Pavel to the back of the chamber and glanced up the chute.

It was dark. That was about all he could see. Dark.

Somehow the adventure stories never pointed out the difficulties of climbing around in dark caverns filled with critters that could see in the dark. He held his bow tightly and looked at the ranger.

"Look, you can see in the dark and I can't. If I go up I'd need to bring a torch - I might as well play a trumpet as I go. But you might be able to sneak up." He paused, waiting to see if she reacted. "If you want we can be right behind you coming up. Or we will wait at the bottom so you can retreat more quickly. Your choice."

(Waits for a response.)

"Whatever we find, we need to be ready to light a torch immediately when we get up there."

(OOC: I'm guessing she will want us all to climb together - in the dark with the ranger leading the way. But as I said, we can wait at the bottom. Pavel had the torch before, so probably needs to be ready to light a torch when we get up - although it will depend on what the ranger says.)

Yeah, I think we need you to post. Specifically, if we are now climbing the . . chimney thingy . . . we need to decide who goes first and if we all climb together. I'm inclined to send up the ranger first, but it seems cheap to do to a NPC. What do you think?

Subject: Looking for a job

Cracker stood on shore with Fin looking at the port of Tortuba. It was an island with a fort and a small town and a bunch of ships at the docks. In other words, it fit every stereotype of a new-world port he could imagine. The big difference was that this one didn't seem to have a significant naval presence, although that fort could make things awkward for a visiting ship. But he wasn't concerned with the fort, he wanted to see the ships and the docks.

He wandered with Fin along the docks keeping his eyes open to try and identify any cargo being unloaded or, more significantly, loaded onto a vessel. There were ships of all sorts and Tortuga proved an interesting port as the pair moved along. After a while Fin approached a dockhand and attempted to get some information from him. Cracker hung back feeling that a second lurking presence would only make the dockhand feel uncomfortable. Instead, he moved towards the ship that seemed to have the most appealing cargo getting loaded.

(OOC: Skill check for identifying what is being put onto (and off) of ships. Assuming he finds a ship that seems to be loading something of interest he approaches the vessel in the following manner.)

As Fin continued to talk to the dockhand behind him, Cracker moved on to a ship that had caught his attention. It appeared to be loading a cargo of (Whatever the GM determines, but surely it is a cargo of solid gold statues, diamond necklaces and chests full of jewels! Right? No? Are you sure? Ok.). Cracker approaches the ship next to his target first and approaches what appears to be the quartermaster who was busy loading a cargo. His real goal was to watch the target ship, but he spoke briefly to the man in front of him, asking where this ship was heading.

"I've sailed on a number of ships, so I could help you. But right now I'm without a crew. And I need to get home. So I'm wonderin' where yer headed. If I might be of service on this ship here. I'm experienced, as I said." He ducked his head low, trying to seem like a man desperate for a job. He wasn't disappointed when the man sent him away, as he hadn't really wanted a job anyway. This man would be a poor replacement for Fin and the Cole sisters.

The ship's quartermaster responded to Cracker's 'I need a job' routine by sending him away. "We're headed to London sailor, but I have a full crew, so unless you want to pay your way home, this ship isn't your answer. There's more here headed out soon - and a few taverns where hiring happens." The man looked at Cracker and was about to add a curt "more on!" but Cracker had already done so.

(OOC: While there Cracker also cased this ship to see what it might be hauling.)

Cracker moved off quickly - his move on the first ship had just been a feint. If he was looking for work, it was best to look like he was moving ship to ship and be sure his story could be checked if needed. So he moved directly from this ship to the one he was most interested in, being sure that a couple of sailors saw him approach from the other vessel. He found a man directing the loading of goods onto the ship - probably the quartermaster, although he might well be a Bosun like Cracker himself.

Cracker approached the man with his hat held in his hands. "Sir. I'm looking to ship out with a good crew sir. I've been a good boatswain afore sir. I can do good work." When the man looked at him, he rolled his hat a few times in hands to give the look of a man who was desperate. "Where are you headed to sir.? My Mam, Sir. I have received news it goes poorly. I need to get home. but I can work my way there. I'm a good sailor. It is a fine ship, sir., I've served on her like afore. Where is it headed, sir.? If only . . ." He kept a running commentary of his need to get home going, but without ever giving the location of his home.

(Cracker wants the officer to give away their destination. If he does, the rest of the conversation will go as follows.

If the man demands to know where Crackers home is he will say "Carolina" because he has spent some time in Charleston and could flesh out a story if needed. The Carolinas are also big and might give him an ability to say "no" even if the ship is headed there. He will try to get the man to give up the destination again by suggesting that "maybe by going there first I can find a ship going home.")

As soon as the man told Cracker where the vessel was headed Cracker completely changed his demeanor. "Oh, no, Sir. That is no good, Sir. I need a vessel going to America, Sir. (OOC: Or change the location if this ship is headed there.) My Mam, she is in Carolina, Sir. No, that won't work. But I thank you, Sir." He dropped his head a bit and turned to go, but stopped. "Sir. Carolina, Sir. I need to get home. Do you know if any of these other ships are headed that way? Or even to the mainland at all? I may need to settle for just getting closer. Do you know sir? Could you help a fellow seaman?"

(OOC: Cracker will say, "a fellow bosun" if he believes that to be the rank of this man. If he is at all uncertain he will not, wanting to be sure not to insult a higher ranking officer.)

Subject: Climbing

Sorry for slow posting - I haven't seen updates. I must be just missing them when they slide off the latest updated page.

As for climbing, we have a small issue. Dane is the logical choice to climb. However, he can't climb in the dark and any light source would give away the whole enterprise. So while he is the best choice and I'd be happy to try, I think it is a bad idea. He needs some light. Which means that the ranger is the best choice. The problem is that I hate to send an NPC up first. It seems a bit cheap. But it also seems right in this case.

Subject: Sort of

We had sort of decided to go down the path - but my comments on that were based on the assumption that the ranger wouldn't want to eliminate the wolves. She is actually ok doing that. Given that, Dane would be much happier not leaving a trio of wolves behind him at the cave entrance. Thus the idea to get rid of the wolves.

If the wolves are gone, checking out the . . . .whatever it is that goes up . . . seems to make some sense. I doubt we can see much without climbing. I was going to suggest having Dane climb a little first, but since he is completely blind in the dark that seems to be a problem. Climbing he could probably do, but scouting would be harder.

What say you?

Dane understood the argument about not being seen. He had a history of not wanting to be seen - and he really did not want the goblins to see him before he saw them. But without a light he would never see them. And how do you start a light in the middle of a fight? That would be bad timing. So he stressed the need for light.

As for where they went he offered the ranger a choice. They could either kill the chained up wolves and he'd try to climb the hole or whatever it was in the cavern. Otherwise move on. He didn't want to climb with hungry wolves at the bottom. He assumed this meant they would move on.

(If the ranger wants to kill the wolves Dane would aid with that with his bow. But assuming not, the plan is to move on down the path.)

Lets use some light and go down the path by the stream.

Dane needs to be able to see I think and I don't want to move into the wolves unless we get rid of them. They might like her, but not us. I'd climb whatever was there without the wolves, but with 'em... no.

Subject: A Pirates Tail . . .wait, I have a tail!? No, a tale. And this guy is actually literate

William "Cracker" Wiley watched as the Sun Dog sailed towards the port of Tortuba and wondered what he would find there. The Brits had been going back and forth with others for control of the island for years. Cracker didn't really care what government claimed whichever patch of dirt, just so long as he could pee on it when needed. But he would prefer it if they didn't run into the royal navy. He had a history with the navy that he wasn't very keen to revisit.

Almost a dozen years ago he had been press ganged by the navy when only 16 years old - right after having watched his father's murder. It was a bad weekend. Over the years he came to love the sea, but his bitterness towards the navy had grown almost daily as he watched the brutality towards the sailors and the luxury, power and corruption of those in command. He never forgot that he was there against his will. About two years ago his ship, a third-rate frigate called the York, chased down a pirate ship that had been targeting British shipping along the coast of America. As the battle approached Wiley found himself hoping that the pirates would win. He held back in combat, not wanting to aid the navy. Things were not going well for the navy and in the midst of the scrum one of the officers, a particularly brutal lieutenant named Polesman, called Bruiser" by the crew, spotted Wiley and threatened him as a coward for holding back. Wiley was many things, but not a coward, and when Bruiser attacked him with a truncheon he put his cutlass between the man's ribs, enjoying the look of surprise it created, if only briefly. Around him the fight continued to move in the pirate's favor and he heard his captain call to try and pull away. Seeing his chance, Wiley used the cover of the battle to jump onto the pirate's ship and conceal himself from the vision of the naval vessel. When the naval vessel attempted to run the pirates let them go with only a few cannonballs as a parting gift - there was little loot of value on a naval vessel anyway.

With the battle over William surrendered to the pirates and asked if he could join them. It took a little while to earn their trust, but he did this and proved to be a capable soldier quickly moving into his old position of boatswain on the new vessel. Unfortunately the man at the helm of his new ship, Captain Addicus "Grimace" Karver was as brutal as any naval commander could be, but perhaps not as competent. At the first port of call, which happened to be Charlotte, S.C. in the Americas, Wiley abandoned the crew and made his way into the town. When the ol' Grimace and crew had sailed on he went back to the harbor and looked for work on another ship. He found it quickly and sailed off on a moderately sized vessel. But fate appeared to have pirate plans for him, and it wasn't long before this ship was attacked by pirates - this time it was the Sun Dog and Captain Cole. When given the choice of joining the crew Wiley umped at the chance. He had seen the crew perform under the captain's commands in the very short fight and had been impressed. The sailors seemed to obey quickly and looked in reasonable shape for sailors. He wondered about following a woman, but if the captain was competent he couldn't care less what her gender might be. And both she and her sister would be something pretty to look at on those long days and nights at sea, even if forever out of reach.

And so Wiley found himself aboard the Sun Dog and a pirate once more. And he found himself staring at an approaching port that just might be in the hands of the British. He didn't think many in the British navy would recognize him - he was almost certainly presumed dead in the battle and fallen overboard. Nobody would know about his fight with Bruiser, but that wouldn't matter anyway, since if he was recognized his was still guilty of desertion. Besides, he was a pirate. Did one need more of a crime than that? Perhaps kidnapping a young kid who was having the worst week of his life was worse, but if you were the navy that wasn't even considered a crime. He just shook his head at the way the world functioned and went back to work.

I believe Pavel had torches, but I wanted to check with the DM on how you would handle such things. If the elf leads the way with good vision, would a torch at the back of the party mess that up? Also, how would you handle a torch and a bow? If Dane were carrying a torch, would he have to drop it to shoot his bow? What would dropping it do to light and chances of putting it out? It makes a difference for which weapon he carries.

Dane nodded at his companions words. "I agree. I don't think we want to try climbing a chute in the dark with goblins likely at the top and wolves at the bottom. There is a clear path forward." At this he nodded at the path along the waterway. "But I can't see anything in here. Once all of the light from the entrance is gone, I'll be totally blind. I know a torch is like a "we are here!" sign, but I don't think there is much I can do about it. I'm here, and, well, I need to see. Can we light a torch as soon as all light from the entrance is gone?"

(OOC: I was assuming there was still a little light from the entrance allowing Dane limited vision. He could carry the torch at the back of the party.)

"Sure, why not wolves in the dark?" thought Dane. Why wouldn't a hero crawl into a wolves den? It could be fun. He shook his head at what he was doing, but was still grinning. At least these little pups seemed to be chained. That was convenient.

He allowed their new friend the ranger to move past him and try whatever it is she was going to try. But he put an arrow to bow and moved up right next to the entrance - remaining 99% hidden by the wall in case there were goblins in there. But he had the arrow ready to go - if the a wolf broke free or something else happened, he was ready to fire.

Now just let those wolves stay quiet.

Wolves - at the moment they don't seem to be too loud. If they can't reach us, we could try to shoot them from the opening. At least if the rangery stuff fails. i'm not sure if there is much to post until we know what the ranger does.

Dane would knock an arrow and get ready to shoot if the ranger fails - I assume she wouldn't actually get within their range. I guess I can post that.
