"yes, I was wondering about your steed. I understand. Certainly, go and do what you need to do. I suspect it would only slow you down, but I would certainly be willing to go with you if you desire. Otherwise, I will wait here. All four of us should together decide what to do and act as one when you return."

Subject: Let me take a look at that.

Seeing one of the others limping, Heironymus offered his skills as a healer. (If accepted he will cast the lowest level healing spell that looks like it will work.)

He then sets about explaining the events of the last several days. (What is in this thread, essentially) In particular he notes that the young lady, although appearing to bear wounds from her captivity, might well have been in on the escape. Or perhaps was in on it until things got too deep for her. But clearly, Kyara tracked the brigands to that cave.

Is there anything to do other than deliver the message? How do we prevent this war the elf was speaking of?

Subject: More reason to doubt Jocelyn?

Just when it seemed we had misjudged the young lady, more reason to doubt her appears, Heironymus thought.

"Hmmm, I am very curious to hear why you doubt the young lady," he said quietly. "You will find we have similar concerns of our own. But we can discuss those over a fire at a camp. May I suggest we move away from our entrance spot to find our place of rest?"

With that Heironymus offered the lead to the others if they wanted it. He thought they should probably head in the general direction of the city, as that would likely be the next days target, but wasn't overly concerned about the direction taken at the moment. Once a decent place for a camp had been found, and the surroundings briefly scouted, Heironymus hoped to sit down and discuss things with the two strangers. Because they did not seem to be on the side of the elf in the cave, nor to want the war spoken of, he decided that he would share what little information he had willingly, telling the tale of the attack on the caravan and Jocelyn's apparently willing capture.

Heironymus hated the thought that somehow he might be used as a pawn to start a war. Wars might be fun games for the rich and powerful, but rarely benefited the little folks who ended up fighting them. Wars between two apparently civilized races seemed particularily pointless.

But he was so new to the area, he understood that he made an easy pawn. He didn't even understand the relationship between the merchants city and the empire these other two came from. Perhaps it was time to take a class in politics 101. At the least, he would start by learning what he could from his companions.

Subject: Whew! The mage didn't really want to lead

Hearing Peter step forward Derry was more than happy to allow someone with more armor to take the lead.

"The front is all yours, big guy," Derry said quietly with a smile. "As you said, perhaps we should go in quickly. We know they are there, so maybe we have some small element of surprise. I'll be right behind you."

And with that Derry started to prepare to cast a spell (most likely sleep, but until he saw what was in the room, who knew?) and follow the others quickly into the kitchen.

Subject: Out of the frying pan, into the . . . what?

Heironymus stepped out into the light gratefully. He didn't know the geography around here very well, but he could guess what city was in the distance. It was good to be out in the fresh air again. Being honest with himself, it was quite good to still be alive.

He glanced over at the two others and saw one indicate to the other to move away from where the "door" ought to be, although Heironymus could see no evidence of their conveyance. Still, it seemed like a wise idea. He also moved off to the side - the same side as the other two, but was careful not to invade their space. If they wanted some space to talk, that seemed reasonable. As he moved aside, he commented quietly to Kyara, "Sometimes walking away can take more strength than fighting. We still live - and it will be much easier to aid Joselyn alive than it would have been dead. Let us see what we can do to help her - I believe that path will start with the other two."

(The other two seemed to want to talk amongst themselves first, which seems reasonable. Heironymus would wait before speaking until the other two have finished their discussion - or some reasonable point to interject presents itself.)

Turning back to the others Heironymys introduced himself. "I am Heironymus. As you may have guessed, my companion and I were part of a group that was hired to defend a merchants caravan. While I have serious doubts about all aspects of the elf who opened this door for us, he did speak truly in one respect: we did not fully succceed in doing what we were hired to do. Or rather, we did defend the caravan very successfully, but not the caravan masters daughter - the target of the raid."

"My companion and I then followed the raiders to the cave in which we encountered you, hoping to rescue the young woman. You saw the result."

"But we know almost nothing about you. And yet, the next stage of this mission depends upon you. I am left with two questions:
1. Who are you and what is your role in all of this? We were simple guards and rescuers. I know little of this likely war he spoke of, but find little positive in the thought of war.
2. You have the letter which supposedly will state a ransom price for the girl. For lack of a better choice, I suppose it should be delivered. But it is in your possession. What do you say? Perhaps you know more of these events than we do? Or at least more than I do."

With that Heironymus could only await the reactions of the others.

As Noctus pokes his head into the kitchen, Derry prepares a spell, just in case. He is ready to follow the others in and see what is going on. However, the delay at the door appears to have demonstrated that decisiveness was not this groups forte. Derry didn't want to take the lead, as meatshield was not something he was equiped to do, but someone had to go in. So he prepared to follow Noctus.

Hearing the voices - could he recognize the language?

Subject: Deceit or not, evil is obvious

Heironymus knew there was deceit involved in this situation. Or rather, he didn't know what deceit was involved, but was sure it was there somewhere. It was possible that in amongst the words of the mage there was some truth, distorted and twisted though it might be. But one thing was clear: the man had a real evil streak. His torturing of the young girl was enough to prove it. But even evil men could speak truth when it served them. So how did these words serve him?

As he started to ponder, he just shook his head in frustration. In one thing the elf was correct, it was time to play the role of pigeon. Whatever was going on, he was simply a pawn in this game. And pawns did not survive by messing around with the more powerful pieces. At the moment, he could see no advantage to staying. But he could see an advantage to leaving. He would deliver the message.

It was not in his nature to leave a helpless person in the hands of an evil overlord to be tortured. But it was also not his way to throw away his life in a useless fight. Perhaps later something could be done?

Looking at Kyara, he mouthed "thank you." Turning back to the room with its reading "king" he stated, "We will play pigeon if the one with the letter will leave with us. Be strong Joselyn."

And with that Heironymus, both frustrated and relieved perhaps more than ever before, moved towards the door, gesturing Kyara ahead of him.

Subject: Well, now that seems a bit rash!

After having spent the last several nerve racking minutes attempting to figure out how to get out of the room alive, Heironymus was surprised to hear that they would be allowed to walk out. Surprised, but he had to admit to himself, quite pleased. It seems there was a role for them to play in starting a war. Not good. But neither was death.

"You lie...."

He heard his companions speech with shock. He certainly understood the sentiment, for even if he hadn't been the tracker, he certainly understood the meaning of the path that they followed. Still, he saw little to gain from antagonizing their foe. He didn't have to look around again to realize they had little chance to fight their way out, even if the leader were not a spell caster of power.

Hearing one of the newcomers plead for a quiet escape, Heironymus could not help but agree.

He whispered sharply, "Relax, Kyara! How do you intend to kill them all? There are too many! We can return later!"

He didn't step completely in front of Kyara, she had earned more respect than that, but he did make sure he was a bit in front and partially blocking her anger from view. Turning back towards the larger room he spoke louder. "I agree with these others. We shall leave and carry your message back to the merchant whose wagons were plundered. But if you wish a ransom, remember that if she is damamged, she will be worth less to everyone. Shall we return the way we came?"

"Hired to let the caravan get attacked? Perhaps we were over zealous in our defense then when several attackers were killed?"

Heironymus scanned the room. He was still uncertain of the true nature of the newcomers, but he was pretty sure he had the measure of the man on the dais. The attackers had been tracked back here, where this man seemed to be in charge. The girl had clearly been beaten. The newcomers, whoever they were, had apparently been captured and tortured. Whatever might be said of the newcomers, the guy holding Joselyn's chain was clearly not their friend. And he held that which Heironymus and his companion had come for.

But knowing the enemy didn't make planning the next move any easier. Turning toward the dais, he spoke. "As for a reward for the girl, I suppose that is possible. But in fact, her rescue would simply be attempting to carry out the task for which we were hired - protecting the caravan. A task that your men made difficult. You do, after all, have the booty . . . " he noted while glancing at Joselyn. "Assuming for the moment that people can be bought and sold, in what way do you make such a claim?"

As he finished his latest speech, he continued to look around. He really had no idea how to extricate himself, Kyara, and Joselyn from this mess. So for now he would keep talking. Maybe someone would have a good plan.

"Yes, it is true. We failed to protect the caravan. But just because a thief is successful, it does not make him any less of a thief."

Heironymus continued to look around, attempting to judge teh reactions of the guards - and especially the new comers. "And bought and paid for? In what way? The caravan was attacked, and the young lady taken. I fail to see any just payment in that."

Subject: From illusionary frying pan into the fire

Illusions again! Heironymus wasn't sure what to believe at this point. Except, perhaps, never trusts a dark skinned elf? Or at least these dark skinned elves.

He really had no idea what to do. He didn't know what was even real in front of him. Even the new arrivals - were they real? Probably. Maybe. Were they allies of the guy with the chain? From his comments it was unclear. But one thing Heironymus was sure of was that he could not trust whatever that guy said. Which left him at a loss.

What he needed was information. Two things occurred as possible options. He could try and test the illusions as he had heard that if you didn't believe in them and looked for flaws that you might discover the truth. He could also try and keep the bad guy talking.

So he asked a question. "Chaos? What chaos have we caused as we creeped through the dark hounded by your illusions?" As he asked these questions he also stared closely at the guards attempting to detect a hint of illusion. He suspected the guard that closed the door was real, but were they all? He attempted to disbelieve and look closely.

(Since nobody else has posted yet, Heironymus will ask. However, if others are also going to say something he will gladly allow them to ask first as he is feeling very uncertain about what to do. Listening to others questions might provide the information he needs.)

It is not my intent to take over the mission; feel free to express ideas/actions counter to those of Heironyumus. However, since you haven't posted in 10 days, I will continue to post to keep things moving. Jump in whenever you can.***

With the ever present eyes closing in from behind and an apparent portal in front of them, Heironymus quickly says, "Open the door, go through quickly."

(Assuming the door opens)

As the door opens the two will move hurriedly through into whatever space is beyond. Heironymus guards the rear, with his wand up and ready. He does not light it, not wanting to alert the loud marchers he heard earlier. (Can he still hear them at all?)

Once inside, he will pull the door shut and hold it shut. He will also light the wand - giving it to Kyara if the creatures on the other side attempt to pull the door open. With a lit wand the two will immediately survey their surroundings to attempt to figure out the next step.

Subject: Footsteps in the Dark

As they move quietly and slowly forward in the dark, Hieronymus pauses periodically to listen. Footsteps. Very quietly, yet clearly, they are there. Footsteps in front of them. And a great deal of noise behind.

It was with a growing sense of being between a rock and a hard place (while under a great deal of rock!) that Heironymus first heard these sounds. But even as he heard them, a passage opened up to his right (I think it was right). Heironymus quietly and gently indicated to Kyara that he wanted to move that way. Let the padfoot and the crowd meet each other behind them.

He didn't like this. Since everyone else clearly could see in the dark, he wondered how much of their actions were already visible to whatever pursuers were out there?

**I assume I can't tell how far away the footsteps are?
Assuming Kyara is willing to move down the side tunnel, that is the direction they will go. Heironymus will remain at the back. He will also keep the wand out and ready. Should anyone, the loud guards or the padfoot seem to get too close he will utilize the wand to light everything up, and hopefully blind whoever is down here.

Kyara, as always, can veto these plans.

Hearing the noise of the approaching groups, Heironymus muttered a religiously appropriate curse under his breath. So much for the easy way of doing things.

"Kyara, lets quietly slip down this hall and see if we can avoid the commotion. Go slow, we probably don't want to risk light. Your eyes are better to lead and I have the armor for the rear."

The idea is to slip slowly, quietly and in the dark down the passage they are currently headed down. This should be the one route that nobody else is currently in. I assume this will be very slow going because of the lack of light. Heironymus will keep one hand on Kyara's shoulder so that he doesn't lose track of her, if she doesn't object. Obviously he will be listening carefully. He will also have the wand at the ready to shine bright light into the eyes of any who approach. The spell sound blast is also on his lips. If a side tunnel appears Heironymus will want to take it to get out of the direct line of sight of those who presumably can see in the dark.

Subject: The kitchen - my favorite part of a house.

Upon hearing about the inside of the kitchen, it seemed obvious to Derry that they should enter. It might be a trap, or the side door might simply have jammed. Either way, it was the only way in to accomplish their goal. Unless they wanted to climb the building and that didn't sound like any fun.

So what was the next step? Probably bracing the door open. Quietly if possible. He'd say so, but it was probably a job for the muscle and he hated giving the impression that he was telling everyone what to do. Then they enter. But should they open the far door before everyone went in? Either option seemed to offer its own dangers.

He was normally all for searching every room as they got to it, but in this case, would they find anything more than some burned biscuits? Then again, in many manors servants were meant to be present, but neither seen nor heard. Thus they had servants passages. Perhaps such a passage offered the cooks the ability to bring snacks to various rooms unseen and unhindered? At the very least he would look around for a likely spot when they entered.

Having finished his pondering, and not yet hearing anything else from the others, Derry spoke quietly. "I guess we go in. It is why we are here. Does anyone have a plan for bracing the door?"

Dang! Thought Heironymus as the alarm went up.

He quickly moved past the side opening in the tunnel. (He wants to be in the tunnel the noise is NOT coming from, nor back down the tunnel they came from, which would be back towards the guard room.)

(Assuming Kyara will move with him, H would not pull her.) Heironymus quietly whispers, "Lets shut off the light and wait and see who arrives. Let them pass if we can."

His plan is to sit quietly in the dark, weapons at the ready. He is ready to use the wand if the on coming guards are in the dark. His first move, however, if conflict is unavoidale would be to use a sound burst spell. Secrecy seems to be a moot point now. But he would let them pass if they rush on towards the guard room. Kyara,of course, might not like this plan.

As the darkness receded, Heironymus looked carefully around the guard room and muttered, "So much for surprise."

After nudging the corpse with his toe to make sure it was dead, he bent down to quickly examine it. He was looking for valuables, whether that be coins or information. Were these the same people that attacked the wagons?

And, of course, they had to decide what to do now. As he searched the body, he spoke to Kyara. "What now? Follow the guard who will probably be expecting us? There may even be a trail of blood. Nice shot. Or take a different route hoping to regain surprise? I think these two were here to guard something. So I'd say go forward and follow the guard down that hallway. But I'm open to ideas if you have any."

As the darkness spread out from the tunnel, Heironymus strained his ears to hear. Keeping the wand lit, he backed into the doorway, blocking it.

As he moved back he spoke to his partner. "Kyara, stay behind me. If I block the door he can't get past without being seen. Keep your bow ready and your ears open."

With that Heironymus stood blocking the door. He strained his ears to hear any movement his opponent might make. He knew his opponent was already injured and hoped that might cause him some problems. He held his mace at the ready. He had seen a sword. If the guard intended to use it he would have to move into the light where Heironymus could swing back. If missiles started to fly Heironymus would be forced to back out of the doorway and off to one side.

Ok, so a darkness spell, I'm guessing? Heironymus does have a light spell as well as the wand. I assume the wand is what is keeping the darkness at bay. Would a light spell be likely to cancel out a darkness spell and leave them back under "normal" conditions? I'm guessing this is something that Heironymus would know enough about to at least have an educated guess.

Subject: Ok, so . . .

Ok, if the room was not lit, then Heironymus would abviously need to keep the wand out - and keep it generally aimed at the eyes of his opponent. It owuld probably somewhat limit his ability to see - at least it would be hard to see whatever was byond the light. (For example, it would be hard to see Kyara)

From your description - the "room" sort of become a T? We enter from the bottom and the tunnel goes both directions? Wait - just reread your post. It is more of a wide spot in a tunnel. Just a guard room of sorts.

But the big question - there is room for Heironymus to enter and move to the side leaving space for Kyara to shoot, right?

If the guard has backed away to about 15' - he is about at the other edge of the room, right? But not yet in the "tunnel" on the other side. So, for now, it would be possible to get at him from both sides. Or one side and a shooter.

Subject: One down . . .

Heironymus feels his mace connect with a satisfying thud on the guard and watches as he falls to the ground. He really didn't like killing, but a bit of adventuring had the effect of making him get accustomed to the uncomfortable act.

In order to clear sight lines for his friend and ally, Heironymus stepped forward at an angle into the room. He slid to the side (LEFT side)of the entryway as he entered allowing Kyara room to shoot. He did not immediately charge his opponent (leaving 12-15 feet between them, I assume)as he was more than willing to let a swordsman stand his distance and be taken down with the bow if he was willing to stand there and present a target.

(Three things worth noting beyond this basic act:
1. Since the room was already well lit I would assume there is no reason to keep the wand lit or out. Thus another charge would not be used in this case and if his opponent remains at a distance and he gets a chance, Heironymus will tuck the wand away. He could also just drop it if his opponent charges and it seems foolish to take time dealing with the wand.
2. There has been no discription of the room into which Heironymus is stepping. However, since it is well lit and the characters eyes are already accustomed to the light he should have no trouble seeing into the room. Since his opponent is 15 feet away and backing up, Heironymus will not leap recklessly into the room. He wants to move fairly quickly to clear sight lines, but will make sure he knows what he is stepping into and look for other guards as he enters the room.
3. I guess I am assuming there is a room on the other side of the door, not just a tunnel. Also, what is the light source on that side of the door?)
