Subject: Looking for a D&D game

I have had some unfortunate luck since coming to this site. Quite a few games have disappeared within the first couple of months of starting. Some of them had very legitimate reasons for not being able to continue, some just faded away and never came back. But whatever the reason, I have been left with characters and no campaigns.

I would love to find a good D&D game - one that the GM is pretty sure will stick around for awhile.

Most of my game experience is with the older versions of the game. I have never seen version 4, for example. I have now started campaigns in the previous couple. I am more than willing to learn new systems. Plus, it doesn't bother me if I don't know all the rules and have to rely on the GM. Tell me what to roll and I will roll it. I have played quite a bit of the older systems and have had no trouble picking up whatever I needed to so far.

Also, I like the role-playing side of things. A few of the games I have started (that might or might not return: Xenophobia, Out of the Garden, Haunted Highlands) were very heavy on roleplaying. Check out the threads and you'll get a feel for what I write. I have also played and can enjoy the traditional pub crawl, oops, dungeon crawl/hack and slash event.

In the past I have had no trouble keeping up consistent postings and see no problem in the future. If you would like an addition to your game, drop me a note.

Edwin Arlington Robinson

Interesting poem. I did not know it before.

"Fighting a war to fix somethig works about as good as going to a whorehouse to get rid of the clap."

Not a commentary on current wars, just something I saw that caught my attention.

Subject: Plan. what plan??!!

As the young wizard finished talking Doogan had all he could do to avoid shaking his head in disbelief. He admired Anna and Kilton's resolve and willingness to join a worthy cause, and would almost certainly join himself, but a lot remained unanswered. Doogan had rarely ever set off to explore something with less information.

"No doubt as the others have suggested there are elements of this story that the King does not know. No doubt a spellcaster such as this Searo is worth listening to. But regardless, I am not in the habit of allowing others to make my decisions for me. For good or ill, only I can make choices for myself, and I must bear the burden of the choices I make."

Doogan allowed himself a small sigh, and then continued. "Also, while this King may not know all, I highly doubt that a monarch of any worth would allow himself to be no more than a puppet of a spellcaster from Duncan, or anyone else for that matter. Certainly there is more that he DOES know. And I would wish him to share it. For how are we supposed to follow the advice and plan of this Searo of Duncan, as the young mage suggests, if we do not even know what that plan is? Is there naught more to it than simply "You seven are fated to save the world by fighting Nixmir?""

Doogan looked to the King expectantly.

Subject: Doogan the Patient

So, the ship was underway? He supposed he ought to be annoyed at being carried off without any warning, but there didn't seem to be any point to it. He'd have gone along anyway.

The conversation was interesting at this point, although severly lacking in any details. The compliments kept coming, sort of. "Fated to save the world," or some such thing was not an expression Doogan had expected to hear outside of books, yet here it was being applied to him. At the least the King had his attention.

And it appeared he would continue to hold his attention for at least six days. Doogan still had questions. At this point he knew the name of the necromancer and now a potential destination. But nothing else. What exactly were they supposed to do? He considered repeating his questions again, but decided that he had already asked them enough.

Doogan simply continued to lean back in his chair and listen. He hoped it was obvious that he was waiting for the king to coninue. Patience was a virtue that the explorer had cultivated over the years while attempting to evade traps and such. That skill seemed to be called for at the dinner table.

Subject: Doogan and the Deadly Six . . .4 . . . whatever

It was an odd situation Doogan found himself confronted with. Clearly the necromancer was a dangerous threat to the world. Clearly some sorceror thought he and the others in this room were capable of doing great things. And yet, clearly, the King seemed to be as concerned with the wiles of the young elf maiden as he was with the dark armies of Nixmir. Somehow such flirtations seemed out of place in this environment. Either that or the King did not believe this situation to be as grave as his words, but not his behaviour, indicated.

The elf maiden's comments certainly added to the sense of threat, yet it was clearly the King who would have ability to enlighten everyone on the purpose of their presence.

"Please, sir. Other than an interesting comparison to the Six, not much has yet been disclosed. What is it you expect of us?"

Doogan reached for another tart as he spoke and started eating when his question was done. He made no move to follow the elf out of the room. He hoped it was obvious that he was waiting for answers.

Did everyone see the post in the Common Room by Dragonblood saying he would be back in a week? Internet problems or some such thing. I just wanted people to know this game wasn't dead. At least I don't want it to be dead.

On that note - aren't we still waiting for Fears to post?

Fears? Are you out there or did I miss something?

There is just no sense in not having things ready to go as soon as our fearless leader can get things back up and running again.

Glad to see that you are alive and still active. I was beginning to wonder if yet another game had just disappeared on me. It looks like maybe "Out of the Garden" will still have life. Good. I like it so far.

Good luck with "real life."

Doogan has now switched from "powerful force" to "cultural Icon." He likes either expression.

Hmmmm...

I thought they were similar - guess I will reread. I will get to it and modify things later this afternoon. (Sunday)

If you wish to move the game along go ahead - the basic jist of things would remain the same. Doogan has questions but would likely join whatever quest is presented - it is the point of the game afterall.

Edit: The misread was minor. Instead of "powerful forces" the King spoke of "cultures threatened." But the idea is the same - Nixmir is bad, you were picked for some speacial reason. Implied = quest is to defeat Nixmir. Both groups basically heard the same thing, just phrased a bit differently.

I will still change things when I get a chance, but it really won't make much difference. At least I don't think it will.

Subject: Doogan the Diplomat becomes Doogan the . . . cultural icon?

After a brief awkward moment while Doogan and the King each waited for the other to sit, Doogan took his chair. Somehow he had always thought that Kings always sat first. Either he was wrong, or this was a fairly unusual monarch. Somehow he suspected the latter. Unusual, but well fed, he thought as he worked his way through the various foodstuffs on the table.

“Chosen to represent your cultures . . ."

Representing his culture? Gnomish culture? Well, he was certain that the necromancer didn't have the best wishes of gnomes in mind when making his undead. But why him? In what was was he a good representative of his culture - wither because he was representative or because he was somehow powerful? Yet, somehow he had been chosen. And to defeat Vardon Nixmir?! The undead? He knew that name! Every child in Sanctuary knew that name!

“Your highness, defeating the evil of Nixmir is indeed a, how did you put it, “Glorious war.” The world would be well served to see that evil removed from it. I am honored that you and this Searo DeCorwyn believe that I, and through me, Sanctuary, can be of aid in this battle. But surely you must realize that we are left with many questions. You seem to be waiting for a reply, but I don't even know what I am replying to at this point other than the "honor" of my selection.”

With the questions out in the open, Doogan grabbed a couple of sweets and leaned back to hear what the King had to say. “I was told I was coming here as a diplomat, which also seemed like an odd job for me. Still, it seems to be less surprising than the situation I find myself in now.”

Subject: Oh, that food looks good!

“Thank you for your very gracious hospitality, your highness. Indeed I am famished after a long journey on naught but trail rations. The bounty of your table is impressive, worthy of being served in this most impressive of ships.”

There, thought Doogan, certainly that has to be worthy of an ambassador. I’m on a first-name basis with a king? Huh, I never would have expected that!

Doogan had been looking around constantly since arriving in the city, and examining the ship with fanatical attention since his arrival there – at least as much as he could while Squiggy led the way. He would dearly love to see what kept this thing afloat. Based on all of the piping running through the place he was guessing that they hadn’t even cheated and used magic. What a crazy ship he thought as he moved to his seat! I must ask the King all about it when I get the chance!

Doogan looked hungrily at the food, but paused at his chair and waited for the King to sit first. He figured that was how a real diplomat would do things. But a growl in his stomach betrayed him as he looked at the food. He grinned at the King and noted that “his stomach appeared to agree that the meal was worthy.” But he waited to sit.

One more point of organization/information. It will probably come out in the writing, but my life would be easier if it were organized inone neat spot. Who exactly wo we have in the party - once it is formed?

I think we have a rogue, a wizard, a druid, a barbarian and a bard. Plus I think there is one more that I can't identify from the first posting. Not a bad mix.

Could we get a listing of everyone:
player - character name - race and class

It would just make my life a bit easier.

Subject: Ok, I think I got it. Oh, wait . . .

Ok, that helps explain a lot. Without going into details, I am left with two more questions specific to Sanctuary and Doogan's home.

1. The Kingdom of Agoria - of which Sanctuary is a part appraently, what is it? Is it some sortof loose confederation far to the East? Your original post for Doogan implied that Sanctuary was sort of part of it, but sort of not.

2. I think you said Lord Kharsis was attacking Agoria from the South. Is there any known link between Kharsis and Nixmir or are these independent threats? Why is he attacking? He is attacking the home of the gnomes so Doogan wouldn't like him, but is he otherwise notably evil? Ought Doogan to be more concerned about this than about some battle far off to the West of his homeland? (Of course he was still sent on this mission by the leaders of Sanctuary.)

Thanks for the explanation, I suspect it will help make things a bit more clear when listening to the King.

Pictures of the big map would certainly be cool.

Subject: Doogan the Diplomat?

From the very beginning this trip had seemed very odd to Doogan. "Only he could do it?" Huh? Only he could be a goodwill ambassador? Ambassador? Him? He had always thought of himself as an explorer. In fact, that is how he was known in the neighborhood. You know, the guy who snuck into the old ruins and dug around in them. The guy that wandered around out in the woods just to see what was out there. He liked investigating things – finding out what sort of things were out there in the world and what made them tick. It was a fun life, if occasionally a bit dangerous. But nothing in that description matched the word “ambassador.” Ambassadors were chatty people. Formal. Diplomatic. It just didn’t make sense to Doogan.

But so be it. He had always enjoyed travelling. This trip certainly offered the gnome a great chance to see what was in one of the biggest cities around. He didn’t have any idea why he had been picked, but the council had asked and it would have been unwise to say, “no.” So he had accepted the task and might as well make the best of it. Let's see what the world has to offer.

The trip itself was almost disappointingly uneventful. It wasn’t that he wanted adventure every step of the way, it was just that nothing had happened. He guessed that meant his guides were good at their job. And at any rate he had managed to see parts of Pellios that had so far escaped his vision. That was worth something. And now the real game was about to begin.

"Doogan Ferndrum Perrybuck Bobcat Otto Creespire Wilikaloontatakochtitlanroopatototootloon, I hope I got that right... you are welcome here in the Eastern Kingdom. The king bids you to join him on his flagship, the Illumorous. Please, let us take your bags."

Well, now this was a surprise. Gnomes? He hadn’t expected the monarch of the Eastern Kingdom to be using gnomes as royal messengers. But then, perhaps this was just being done for him? Unlikely, but maybe an ambassador from Sanctuary would have some status? Now that was a nice idea. He hadn’t had a real meal in awhile and he suspected an honored dignitary would warrant a decent meal. Trail rations would keep a gnome alive, which to be honest was quite a valuable thing, but did little to really satisfy his hunger. He could use a good meal.

“Indeed, I would be very pleased to join his highness,” Doogan stated in what he believed to be an appropriately ambassadorial voice. He handed over his bags and gestured to his guides that they should lead the way.

But he just couldn’t maintain the formality, especially with fellow gnomes. “The names Doogan, you can forget trying to remember the whole thing. Does the King always use gnomes as his messengers? And the Illumorous, the ship, is it near here along the river?”

Subject: Vikings for Real?

As a life long Viking fan I must admit this team looks pretty good.

No, I don't think they won that game on Sunday, Baltimore lost it on the kick. But the Vikings did dominate the game for 80% of it. Then they totally lost the ability to tackle and had a coach with no clue about time management at the end of the game. (Oh, is that an old story.) But they did come out with the W. And Baltimore is a good team. And they are undefeated still. And they do look to have a good shot at domefield advatage.

Granted, seedings for the playoffs are a long way away and a couple of plays could have switched their recored to 4-2, but still, so far so good. (The defensive backfield is better than you think. Tackling, not coverage, was the problem Sunday. And I had actually been very impressed with the tackling up until then.)

Anyway, I think they have to stand out as one of the top teams so far. I hope so. But I will admit, at this point the Saints look better. The Vikings have won every game so far, but they haven't faced anyone as good as the Giants and they certainly haven't obliterated them. The Aints look mighty good at the moment. In the NFC at the moment I'd go 1. Saints 2. Vikings 3. Giants
But lets wait another 11 weeks to see.

Hammer? Are you alive? Things ok?

Even more strange, not a single other game member has written anything? Are the others still out there waiting as I am?

This would be something like my 5th game on this site to simply die. That is getting a bit old.

Sirion has posted.

I stopped the post at the point where the carpenter goes slack jawed under the assumption thatmathias probably had something to do with it and Sirion would probably see this. However, I don't know for sure what he would see if he was watching the kid closely so I can't write more.

Presumably he will follow the kid outside. He has two concerns: 1. Worried about the kid. 2. What the heck happened and how did it happen?

If Mathias is just gone, he would go outside - before the crowd since he sees the disappearance before anyone else. At that point he would probably run into the Prudencios and the others. He would want to talk to them.

Finally - I did not mention Rowena (gosh I hope I have that name right off the top of my head.) Sirion would have made sure she was alright before following the crowd. He would have been happy to have her join him as he ran to the town hall, but I didn't want to put anything in about another persons character when we haven't had a chance to talk about it.

Subject: Follow that mob!

Sirion barely managed to avoid getting trampled as the crowd stormed past and dragged the crying child off towards the town hall. By the time he had regained his feet most of the villagers were long past. He wanted to shout to them to stop, but it clearly would have done no good. He hadn’t been fast enough. This was exactly what he had feared would happen. What he knew would happen. And he hadn’t been quick enough to prevent it. What had happened? He still wanted to know. He was still afraid for the small, strange, boy that seemed to be at the center of this whirlwind.

Sirion quickly jumped to his feet and ran after the crowd towards the town hall. When he got there the people were still milling around unsure what to do. He wormed his way through the crowd attempting to get to the town elders. He knew the town would want blood – they were scared. But he also knew that . . . what did he actually know? Not much. And that was the problem. They were going to act before they knew anything. Did Mathias deserve punishment? Maybe. Maybe not. And for what? If he had killed Rico, how had he done it? Shortsighted violence would prevent their ever learning the truth and doom a poor, picked on kid to death.

Sirion attempted to reach the leaders but could not get through the crowd. He attempted a couple of time to yell at them to get their attention, again to no avail. In fact, as he thought about it, he was glad no one had heard his calls for patience. He certainly didn’t want the mob to turn on him. He didn’t understand the blood lust. He wanted to understand, not just lash out.

Frustrated in his attempts to speak with the town elders, Sirion began to work his way over towards the silent and slumped form of Mathias. He reached a crack in the crowd just in time to see the carpenter given guard duty on the small boy go slack jawed. One moment the man was sitting their attentive, and then the next the light was gone from his eyes.

(Sirion will follow Mathias, assuming he is leaving)
