Subject: Thoughts?

Anything else guys?  None of this sounds like a decisive decision.

Fixer does think we might have a little time to find the box.  Maybe 30 seconds.  A bit longer if lucky.  But then he'd need some time to figure out the code.  The liklihood of doing it in time seems low.  Not impossible, but low.  How would a security company react if the alarm is triggered, but quickly untriggered/reset?  This is hardly the kind of comapny with super high-tech concerns.  But I don't have many ideas.

I do, howeveer, think we need to post quickly.  Tonight or tomorrrow at the latest so we can keep it moving.  I'm hopinh we get more ideas and contributions.  If not Fixer will just do something.  His last plan sorta worked.

No problem on the rolls.  Time to get moving.

To the GROUP - a bit of information.  I can post in the thread as well, but we need some conversation.  Fixer noticed a motion sensor in the hallway.  It seems anyone stepping into the hall will set off the alarm - so we will be delaying those entrances that have been posted.  But I have no idea how to deal with it.  Thoughts?

A few of mine....

There should be a code box somewhere to allow us to input a code to shut off the alarm. But we can't see one in the hallway, which means it won't do us much good.  Anyone with advanced vision or other senses should probably be looking carefully.

It seems to me that some alarms have delays before they trigger to allow people who screw up to hit the reset button using the code.  Any ideas how long or if such a thing is real?

Any ideas on how to defeat a motion sensor?  Anyone got gear?  I'm gonna look at mine.  Also, do me a favor and google "defeating a motion sensor" or some such thing.  I don't know this stuff and could use some help figuring this out.

Would the security system react differently to an alarm within the building then they would to a break-in from the outside.  (the window?)

Is it possible to intercept the alarm signal before it gets to the security company?

Gotta post soon.

Normally when you ask for rolls you then send us a PM with the results fo the roll.  I was waiting for that before I posted.  I guess I will post today or tomorrow without it.

As for a leadership roll - that isn't really how I see Fixer and since CyberPunk is really not my strongsuit I figured I'd follow more then lead.  But I have been trying to be more decisive in the last posts.

Who knew that role-playing games would teach me how to do a little breaking and entering?

Folks - this is Fixer's best plan.  Feel free to tell him to stop.  Also, if things go poorly we need to decide if we are going to just bus tthe window and go in at full speed.  As dumb as that sounds I doubt there are many other options.  But speak up about it.  Also, if you are going to help tape, stabilize the window after it shatters or assist in cutting out pieces, you might want to post that as well.  Fixer will need at least one more set of hands - I honestly forgot how big the window is, so I'm not sure if more than one person can help at a time.

Bromern - The plan was made assuming that the glass cutter would be quiet.  If that is a false assumption the plan would need to be altered.  Also, I assume I need to roll something for all of this fun.  I'm will to just assume that I roll the best number possible, but if you insist on actual role, please let me know what rolls you need.

Subject: Time for action

It seemed that nobody in the group had any better plans.  Damn, Fixer had been hoping that someone would be better at breaking and entering then he was.  But at least he knew some stuff.

"Ok, well, if nobody else has a plan, I'm going to get to work and try something.  We can't sit around and wait."  He paused and looked around at the group to see if anyone stopped him.  (OOC:  If anyone does speak up, temporarily disregard what follows.)  Nobody did.  "Ok, lets start with this - if anyone has duct tape, hand it over.  I have some, but the more the merrier.  We are going to take this window one pane at a time.  Step one is to tape the window as much as possible.  This means every square inch of the darn thing.  I'm then going to give it a little love tap in the corner which will cause the thing to shatter into a thousand little granular beads of glass.  That's what tempered glass does.  The tape is to keep it from comng crashing down - if it does it will make noise and the noise based alarm that is almost certainly inside will trigger.  If it does, you can decide if you want to run or just shatter the window and go in with all possible speed."  He again looked around him to see how they reacted to this possibility.

"Yes, it might happen.  Assuming it works, we then very carefully remove the now shattered outer pane.  Now there is only one pane to go - but remember it has the motion sensor on it and has locks on each side.   We tape like crazy around the motion sensor - that thing can't move on us or again we are busted.  Then it is time for the torch."  Here he held up his cutting torch.  "I'm not going to melt the whole damn window.  That'll take too long and risk having the window shatter on us.  But it is the safest and quitest way to get a hole.  Once we have a hole we can use a glass cutter.  We use tape to make sure things don't fall and gradually cut out pieces. I will need an extra set of hands for this part.  Eventually we can tape around the motion sensor on the inside as well to secure it.  The we cut out as much glass as we need to get in - trying to actually make our entrance away from the sensor."  He grinned.  "Simple, right?  And if all goes well we are in undetected."

He gathered together all of the tape that the group handed over and started taping, moving as quickly as possible but being carefult to be very thorough in his application of tape - including taping well onto the surrounding window supports - the tape wouldn't help if all those bits of glass weren't still hanging from something.  When the taping was done he pulled out his microtool and hammer.   Again he couldn't help but smile at the others.  "Buckle up folks, you are about to commit a felony.  Either run now or get in position to stabilize that tape when the window goes."  He then placed a sharp piece of his microtool into the bottom right corner of the window and, taking a deep breath to hold steady, placed a cloth over the end to reduce the noise, and gave it a little whack.

Subject: Ideas

So, the window is double paned tempered glass.  As Fixer said in his post, the alarms will sound based on either movement or noise.  So how do you get in without noise?  A few thoughts:

1.  Heat can melt the glass and potentially do so quietly.  It is possible the glass would shatter, but also fairly likely it wouldn't.  Shattering = alarms.  I don't believe Fixer possesses a decent heat source.

2.  It wouldnt' be hard to shatter the window and get in quickly - but the alarm would go off.  This option requires a way to shut off the alarm before shattering the window or dealing with security once they arrive.

3.  Covering the window with tape can help prevent shattering.  But since we can only tape the outside of the window it is not guaranteed to be silent.  A small nail hit sharply into a corner of the window will do.  We would have to do this twice - once for each pane.  We also would need to be careful not to tri the motion sensor on the interior window.

4.  Try googling for other options - this is about as far as I got.

Please don't just read this without responding with something as we need an option.  If nobody has a better idea I suspect we are stuck using tape.  I'm guessing we might have some, although I'm not sure.  On the other hand I doubt anyone has a flame thrower of sorts.  Or do you?

Subject: The life and times of a cat burgler

Having reached the 8th floor on the fire escape Fixer carefully studied the window.  He had half expected a door, but many highrises didn't like putting doors on the upper floors and instead used windows that could be opened in an emergency.  In Fixer's mind this qualified as an emergency, so they would just have to open the window.  He'd spent a little time working for a security comapny so he did his best to put that experience to good use and looked for clues about they type of protection they faced.

His eyes scanned the edges of the window and . . . yes, there it was.  A motion based system to secure the window.  He looked up at the others and offered up his new found information.  "Ok, there is a secirity system here.  There are two motion detectors.  One is on the window itself, right at the bottom.  The others is on the wall just below the window.  If the window is opened the sensors move further apart and the alarm sounds.  In addition, there is almost certainly a noise detection system.  If the window is shattered, it will make noise which again will trigger the alarm."  He stood up from where he had been crouching in his examination of the window.  "Simple, right?  We just need to be able to open the window without moving either sensor and barely making a sound."

Fixer really wasn't sure how to accomplist this.  He needed a minute to think.  "Anybody have cutting tools?  I have a minisaw, but that is it.  We could try to cut around the sensor so that when we lift the window the sensor doesn't move.  Risky."  He paused.  "Better ideas?"

Subject: The Group Arrives in Botkinburg

The group approached the town of Botkinburg from the South along a road that passed through the Barren Wood.  In some ways you can easily see how the woods earned their dour name – for over 100 miles the small road you followed encountered only a few small settlements and even those were new.  In terms of civilization the woods were indeed barren.  But in other ways the name seemed misapplied – while lacking in settlements it was not lacking in life.  The birds and beasts of the woods had clearly come back and the woods were alive with creatures.  You saw game and heard predators.  But barren or not, your trip through the woods was uneventful and you encountered none of the dangers you had heard might lurk in these woods.

After days of walking your small group neared Botkinburg.  You came because you had heard that the town was experiencing dangers such as goblin raids and might be hiring adventurers to deal with the threat.  Plus, the whole region of the Blacktooth Ridge was a known target for adventurers – an old stronghold of the Horned One’s minions and rumored to be filled with ruins and the gold that people always believed could be found in ruins.  Adventure was something you were seeking.  And money – although each of you had your own private motivations you had come together as a group in hopes that together you would find fame and fortune.  Botkinburg was your first attempt to put that unity to the test.  You were an odd group – a dragonborn, gnome, dwarf, halfling, tortle, and elf.   But you hoped your diverse backgrounds and skills would prove to be an advantage and not just a reason for others to stare as you passed by.

The woods as you traveled were thick and frequently dark.  Not usually a gloomy dark or foul, but just lacking in light as in many places the light from the sun had to fight its way through many layers of vegetation to reach the ground and it was often not up to the task.  Because of this there was little warning that you were near your destination – you simply rounded a corner and a little way ahead saw that the tunnel that was the road on which you travelled seemed to emerge into a well-lit clearing.  You had seen these before, although rarely, and were not certain that you had reached your destination.  But when you reached the opening you saw before you the towers of a keep atop a hill and surrounded by an agricultural community.  You sensed, but could not yet see, the Hruesen River which you knew must be on the other side of the town.

Your first impression of the town was of a thriving community.  You saw many houses scattered around and beyond them fields filled with alternately crops and herds.  To the left as you approached rose another hill that was a bit smaller than the one the keep topped that was filled with what appeared to be halfling holes.  It was early evening when you arrived at the end of a fine day.  The locals seemed to be bringing their herds in for the day and heading for the local tavern.  It wasn’t hard to find.  Near the center of the village was a large, square, two-story establishment with a stone facing on the lower story and wooden planking facing the upper floor.  The roof was made of red slate, steeply pitched as if to spill winter snows, and had a cluster of chimneys and heating pipes poking out of it.  Behind the tavern you saw a stout stone wall surrounding what appears to be a barn, stable and residence.  The sign hanging from the front showed a twisted fishing hook and proudly claimed the name as the ‘Bent Hook’ in freshly painted lettering.  You had previously been told that the tavern in town was known as ‘Ortolf’s House of Sludge,’ but there could be no doubt that this was a tavern and a quick glance around raised doubts that there could be another.

A few steps up brought you to a small porch with double doors open on the warm evening.  As you stood and looked around you saw several young local men walk up the stairs and disappear into the interior.  Following them you saw a typical tavern – there was a large fire in the fireplace and various tables and chairs scattered around the room.  In the back near the fireplace a set of stairs led up to the second floor and on the other side of the room two large oaken doors likely opened on the kitchens.  You saw a pair of young women wander out carrying food and beverages to the rooms inhabitants.  On the whole the place seems quite pleasant, although it is rather dark and stained from years of smoke.

A few moments after you enter your presence is noted – it is a small town and your eclectic group easily stands out as visitors.  In fact, only the halfling can see any of his race in the tavern – a small group of the little folk are sitting at a table near the front windows.  Otherwise the room is filled with humans.  You sense no hostility, just curiosity.  In particular, the tortle and dragonborn appear to be drawing a lot of curious stares.  You are quickly approached by a middle-aged woman with an apron.  “Welcome to Botkinburg and to the Bent Hook.  We have food, drink and rooms to suit your needs.  What can I help you with?”

This is not my game, I'm just a player in it, so this is just an opinion . . .  but I'd be in support of adding new players to replace those we seem to have lost.  We do seem to be down to two players and it is a game I'd love to see continue.

As for the rat thing - may I suggest telling him (I'm assuming that in some way you will go along with the rat hunting thing, but it is your call.) that you will likely do it but want to bring a friend or two along to assist.  Perhaps you can get back to him later or tomorrow?  I guess I'm assuming you'd bring Kheric along on such an adventure but right now nobody else in the bar knows the two of them know each other and it might be best to keep it that way for now.  I'd inquire about when it needs to be done and if this will be a battle or a simple killing of young livestock.  How old are these diseased ones and what does the disease make them do?  Is it a rabies (lycanthropy?) sort of thing or just the plague.  Just the plague.  Is it transmittable to humanoids?  Just some thoughts - more than I thought when I first started typing.

Kheric listed as the two workers told their stories and shook his head.  When Wade finished the story about Adamo Kheric had to remind himself that he could not tell the two about the fate of their former comrade.  Like the man he had beaten he had ended up on the floor with blood flowing from his head.  All he could say was, "The poor chap.  Both of them, actually  And he didn't even know what he was getting himself into."

Edgar had then gone into his bit about the candymen.  "Wait, they can sense who is on the candy?  No.  That can't be.  They must just keep track of their customers or see who is acting crazy.  What else could it be?"  He shook his head.  "It doesn't matter, I suppose, except that I'm not taking any free handouts from anyone.  Now that people have seen the . . . results . . . you'd have to be nuts."  He took a swig of his drink, but kept it smaller than it appeared.  "Were you guys lucky, smart or both?  Anyone ever offer you this crap?  back when they were first offering the free sample, I mean."

Subject: Back at the bar at last!

"Hey friend, how's about you get the next round if we're gonna be answering your questions?"

Kheric had listened to the men talk.  It didn't seem like they knew much, but you could never be certain.  And they did seem to be fairly full of both liquor and frustration.  The two together just might bring out whatever they did know.

So the Dhampir got up from his seat and moved over and joined the others, signaling to the barmaid for another round as he did so.  "Alright, I can deal a round.  A bit of companionship in a new town is always welcome.  And it seems I seems I might need to be wary of who I talk to in this town."

He paused for a bit to see if the others commented at this point and to wait for the round to be delivered.  He raised his mug and appeared to down a big swig, but kept it to a minimum.  It would be best if he did not get drunk himself.  "So, this guy at your work who went nuts, what did he do?  It almost sounds like he tore the place apart."

(Pause to wait for a response. The following assumes a response.)

After hearing a description of what had happened the previous night Kheric let out a low whistle and shook his head.  "Ok, so people know this crap is bad.  What would make them take it?  And a guy like your co-worker, he sounds like he was a normal guy.  How does someone like that even find this stuff?  One would think that once you hear about it you would know to stay away.  I mean, it doesn't seem like you'd be trying this crap even if they were offering free samples."  He shook his head in wonder a bit.  "I guess I can see why the authorities want help on this.  I wouldn't even know where to begin."

(This last part might be split up by responses from the men at the table depending on their responses.)

Fixer moved with the rest down the alley and took his time to look around carefully - including a quick glance at the camera int he doorway.  He thought he knew the type.  "The camera is in fact a camera.  It probably has infra red and x-ray capability, but it is very unlikely to see anything out of visual of the doorway.  I could be wrong, but it would be out-of-type for it to be able to do so, which means we can probably get to that fire escape without that camera detecting it.

At that point Vegas spoke up and started to use his grappling hook to link to the fire escape.  Fixer laughed out loud and raised his as well.  "Go ahead big guy and take the shot.  If you miss I'll give it a go."

(OOC:  I'll get numbers on R20 for taking the shot, but Fixer won't bother doing so unless Vegas misses his attempt.)

As the group moved down the alley Fixer got a better look at the security on this side of the building - he kept a close eye out for anything useful.  He also took a closer look a the supposed camera in the doorway, keeping out of range of its vision if possible.  He expected to see a standard security camera.  But it didn't really matter, a camera was a camera.

He listened as the the others discussed what to do now and the potential for a new team.  Crap.  They didn't need that.  What they needed was to get in this damn building.  "Ok, yeah, we are all in this thing.  Linking it to the maid service is a big step, but we have to get in this place and quickly.  If Charlie has vehicles coming that is great, but it is great once we are done here, not before.  For now we need up on that fire escape.  Anybody have a ladder in their pockets?  Something else?"
