Subject: A whirlwind and a divine smite

The rescue continued at full pace.  Tharoan continued to haul the heavy dwarf towards the river.  Hornet, meanwhile, had decided to ditch his crossbow and help his fellow elf with the task of hauling Dok.  He ran forward and met Thaoran as he continued back.  Adding his heft to the task he increased the speed of the retreat.  (With Hornet’s aid for part of the task this turn they were able to move Dok a total of 40’ towards the river.)

Silver was relieved to catch a glimpse of the elf pulling the dwarf backwards but she still had three much larger creatures in front of her, a fact she intended to remedy.  She turned into a whirlwind of blades as she tried to give her comrades room in which to escape.  She began by planting her blade deep into the bowels of the gnoll (-10hp) who seemed surprised to see a massive hole ripped in its body.  As she pulled her blade free it staggered to the ground in a futile attempt to hold in its guts.  It was a battle it could not win and its life’s blood quickly flowed past its filthy paws.  But silver wasn’t done and she spun and put a long slice across one of the bugbears as it stepped into the fray.  (-11hp)

Seeing the bugbear injured already, Soledad sent a firebolt hurtling towards the creature and struck it a glancing blow.  It wasn’t a square hit, but it still took damage.  (-4hp)  She then moved back to the entrance to the gulley, continuing the trek out of the warzone. The dwarven newcomer saw a wounded bugbear in front of him and saw a chance to take the creature down before it could make another attack with its great morning star.  He swung his axe with all of his strength and saw the blade slide into the gash Silver had already created in the beast’s armor.  As the axe smashed into the creature’s flesh, he unleashed a holy smite on the beast.  Radiant light illuminated the wound and the gap in its armor and seared its vile flesh.  None who saw the blow strike could be sure if it was the strength of the dwarf or the flash of radiance that did it, but the large creature went flying backwards with the force of the blow to land in a crumpled heap at the base of a scrubby bush.  (-15hp and one dead bugbear.)

Seeing one of the two bugbears in front of them fall and now facing only one enemy still in front of them Silver and Gerdar both decided to back away down the gulley so that they wouldn’t be stranded in the middle of it should the others manage their rescue of Dok.  They pulled back 30’.  The bugbear, momentarily stunned by the suddenness of its companions fall was thrilled to see its enemies withdraw in front of it.  As Gerdar moved back he swung his massive morning star at the smaller dwarf.  But it was a hurried and clumsy sing which the dwarf easily ducked – the studded ball on the end of the weapons chain wrapping itself around a nearby branch.  (A Nat 1)  The bugbear paused to yank his weapon out and charged after the retreating pair, swinging again, but again hitting nothing but air and brush.

Meanwhile, those who had been sleeping were being fully roused.  A large armed group was moving down the gulley behind the bugbear, but they didn’t seem to want to engage in melee.  The winding path and brush prevented many clean shots, but it was a large grouping.  Several arrows flew at Silver and Gerdar.  One struck Gerdar (-4HP).  Several others appeared to have been blindly shot deeper down the gulley and fell near to where the injured party struggled, but unaimed they did no damage.

Overview:

Positions are as follows – beginning at the entrance to the Vargolg.

Inside the Cave up to 60’ out:

No longer visible.  A large swarm of goblins – numbers unknown.

60’ From the Cave.  (50’ from the river-end of the gulley)

               5-6 goblin archers at least.

90’ from the Cave (20’ from the river end of the gulley)

               1 bugbear

                Silver and Gerdar

100’ from the cave (10’ from the river end of the gulley)

               Thaoran and Hornet hauling Dok

110’ from the cave (at the brush gate of the gulley)

               Soledad.

The river side of the gulley has an entrance that is about the size of a doorway – that is the only easy way out.  Twenty feet beyond that is the river.  The river has a wide fordable section here.

Total Killed so far:

Goblins:  19 goblins, 2 gnolls, 1 bugbear.

Currently asleep:  6 goblins (1 wounded) and 2 gnolls (both wounded)

(These were asleep – they might not be anymore.)

**Note**

Gerdar did not mention a possible retreat and Tann did not have time to post.   Given that the intent was to retreat from the battle and rescue Dok I chose to add this movement.  If Silver retreated it seemed logical that Gerdar would do so as well.  Yet that is also not completely in character with Gerdar’s previous posts.  If either player wishes to change this move please let me know.  Remember – you can attack and move on one turn, but leaving combat provokes an attack of opportunity in most cases.

Subject: Clarification

Not quite right.  Hornet and Soledad are only 20' from the exit from the gulley.  The rest of you (and the gnoll and bugbears) are another 30' up.  So if you go another 30' next turn you will have reached the spot currently occupied by Soledad and Hornet.  Then it is 20' past that to get to the actual end of the gulley.  As for the gulley end - think of it as a very thick hedge with an opening in it.  The opening is roughly the size of a door and there is brush and bracken that is used to fill it - although it is hardly a solid door.  And it is open at the moment.  Once outside of the gulley it is 20' to reach the river.

Does that make sense?

The battle turned rescue raged on and those trying to get Dok out of the fight were the first to act.  Thaoran grabbed the unconscious dwarf and with a grunt, a groan and a few muttered words about the density of dwarves, started to haul him back down the path and away from the cave entrance.  At the same time Silver, a bit surprised to see only one conscious goblin still standing in front of her, decided that one needed to go to the ground as well and planted her blade deep in its bowels.  Withdrawing the blade as the creature died, she moved with Thaoran back down the path attempting act protectively as she went.

Meanwhile Hornet took a calming breath and fired another bolt at the gnoll standing in everyone’s way.  But the creature seemed to have the devil’s own luck as it dodged a blow from the new dwarf just as Hornet’s bolt should have taken it in the eye.  Instead the shaft simply flew past it and up the gulley to disappear into the brush.  The gnoll felt the bolt barely miss its head and howled in rage.  It pulled up its spear from where it had slammed it on the previous turns miss and attempted to impale the dwarf with it again.  But in its rage it got the spear stuck in the brush as it spun it around and snapped the shaft in half.  The sharp end flew harmlessly past Gerdar who laughed at the incompetent hyena-creature.  The gnoll just looked at the broken spear in its hands in confusion.  (The problem with rolling a natural 1.)

Soledad acted next.  Her sleep spell had given those by Dok time to act, but the gnoll, spear or no spear, was still a problem.  A firebolt flashed from her hands at the beast.  It hit, but it was clearly only a glancing blow.  (-2hp)

Two bugbears were outside the cave now and saw the fight unfolding.  They charged towards the retreating rescuers.  Being 60’ away to start the turn they moved forwards to the edge of the brush (20&rsquo and then ran forwards.  They reached the party at the end of their movement but did not have time to swing.  They hauled back on their large morning stars and had the weapons whirling.

Gerdar laughed at the now spearless gnoll and swung his great axe at the creature.  He blade struck the creature a solid blow.  (-6 hp) It was badly injured, but not down.)

That left the goblins in the cave yet to act.  With everyone else at least 60’ down the path away from the cave entrance they could no longer fire from the relative safety of the cave.  While the bugbears had charged forwards the goblins moved much more cautiously as they looked around at the over 2 dozen dead and sleeping creatures on the ground.  A large group of them, a dozen or so, moved forwards with bows at the ready.  Behind them a large goblin stood and screamed orders, seeming to be trying to order them forward.  The leaders of this group got to within 30’ of the escapees and fired off a few shots, but with the surrounding brush, winding path and 3 very large monsters in the way they hit nothing.  A few of the stragglers seemed to be stopping to try and wake up those who were sleeping.

As action swirled around his unconscious form Dok knew nothing of his surroundings.   Blood continued to trickle from his wounds and he slipped further into unconsciousness.  (Failed death save.)

I tried to get a bunch of friends I play Magic the Gathering with to try out a play-by-post game since I didn't think we had time for a table top version.  Sadly, it didn't end up working out.  You guys are already further in the campaign than they were, so there isn't much you could learn there.

Actually, the open space between the cave mouth and the brush is about 20'  You are 30' from the cave so you are in the trees/brush  - but just barely.  30'  will easily get you outside of decent bowshot for anyone in the cave and well into the trees.  But with no web and no resistance closer to the cave anyone inside can easily follow you out.  If they do so, they can stay within bow range.  Also important - go back and look at the posting - keep in mind how far it is to get out of the gulley and to the river.

That post works.

You can be more precise if you want about the game mechanics - "I use my movement to go 30' and my action to haul Dok along as i go."  if you know the exact mechanics that makes it so that I don't misinterpret things.  If you know what is a bonus action and such, for example, it makes my life easier.  But if you don't know the details or don't want to you don't need to do that.  Just be aware it leaves the interpretation up to me.  But what you posted was fine.  No problems at all.

Smite allows you to do additional damage whenever yout hit.  In this setting I think the easiest thing is to let me know in your post that you intend to smite if you hit.  Then if you hit - smite!  If you don't hit - no smite and no spell slot used.

I forgot to put it in the post:  Dok made his first death saves.  If he makes 3 before he fails 3 he stabilizes.  If he fails 3 before making 3 he dies.

Soledad - You had asked about spells left two turns ago.  We need to double check how many you have.  I let this one go as I didn't have time to go back and check.  But if you cast anything beyond a cantrip we need to make sure you have them available.

FYI - The rescuers can move 30' back down the gulley under the current plan next turn.  This has Thaoran moving Dok and Silver defending.  They can move at 45' if they work together, but then Silver would not be able to attack/defend.

Subject: The fate of Heroes

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of goblins, it was the age of charging dwarves, it was the epoch of fallen heroes, it was the epoch of surprising aid, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair.  Events had, indeed, taken a turn for the critical.  The attempted escape had turned into an attempted rescue and it was unclear if anyone would still manage the escape.

Hornet, Thaoran and Silver all acted at the same time.  Hornet fired a bolt at the best target he could find – the gnoll that stood raging directly in front of his comrades.  Unfortunately, his hurried shot went wide, flying off into the brush and harming nothing.  The elf could only grimace and grab another. Both Hornet and silver charged back towards the fallen dwarf, intent on his rescue.  To do so they had to dodge around the gnoll in front of them – one went left and the other right, and they met again at Dok.  (Note:  the plan is to move him, but both characters used their movement to get to Dok’s body this turn – they can not also move him this round.  So they are just standing there.  I am assuming that they will have a held action – if any creature moves up to attack them they will use their attack to strike.  This was not actually stated, but seems likely.  Please state very clearly what you want your characters to do.)

The one creature still outside of the cave and awake was a gnoll.  After having his foes on the run, it seemed surprised when two of them suddenly spun around and dashed past him back up the gulley.  But a new enemy, a dwarf that had wounded it already with a javelin, stood in front of him.  The large hyena-shaped beast rammed his spear at its smaller foe.  Gerdar was an experienced fighter and moved just enough to the side.  The spear slid along the dwarf’s chainmail and into the ground.  Lesser armor would have left the dwarf pinioned to the earth.  Instead, he was stood in front of his foe and prepared to lash out with his axe.

The task of a hero is a dangerous one and a flight of arrows flew out of the Vargolg at the would-be rescuers.  Six arrows targeted the two characters standing protectively over the fallen dwarf.  One struck Tharoran (-5 HP, 10 total left).  Silver fared worse, being hit twice.  Neither was a hard strike but combined they were dangerous.  (-3 and -4, 4 total HP left.)  And then a group charged out of the cave at the heroes.  Since they started back a ways into the cave and had the pass the archers to get out they all dashed to reach the heroes.  They got there, but could not attack.  Not so restrained were Thaoran and Silver.  Both Thaoran and Silver lashed out at the new arrivals and struck hard.  Each relieved a goblin of its head, reducing the # of attackers by two.  (-8 HP on each strike)  Silver’s second attack failed to find a target.

It was now time for Soledad to act.  Her sleep spell descended on the goblins that were now surrounding Thaoran and Silver.  It was an effective spell.  There were five goblins ready to strike and four of them collapsed to the ground asleep.  The last goblin standing seemed stunned to be alone.  But he wasn’t going to be alone for long.  Clearly more goblins remained inside the cave to shoot arrows.  And now two bugbears stepped out of the cave.  They held large morning stars and seemed ready to join the fight.  They too seemed a bit surprised to see the large number of dead and sleeping goblins.

That left the new arrival.  Having narrowly escaped the gnoll’s spear, he now swung his axe at the beast.  But the attack had staggered him just enough that he couldn’t get the range on his swing and the gnoll escaped with out a wound.

Topic: Blacktooth Ridge Q&A
Subject: Two Questions

Yep, it is confusing, but there are a lot of moving parts in the gulley right now.

Dragon-Soul:  Everything you said was right.  Can someone protect while the other dragged?  Sort of, but not really.  You can attempt to do so and by putting yourself in the way may be able to get the enemy to attack you.  But the gulley is wide enough that they could probably go around you and attack Dok's carrier if they choose to do so.  I can see them being more likely to attack the defender but it isn't a given that they would all attack you.  It would partially depend on how many of "them" there are.

Two specific actions you could do:

1.  Dodge.  If you use your action (Instead of attacking) to dodge, then any attack coming at you has disadvantage.  But again, they might choose to target the other person, the best you can do is put yourself in harms way and hope.

2.  Defend.  This isn't really in the rules but makes sense to me.  You could use your action to put yourself in the way of an attack aimed at the other person.  You can only do this once per round so it would only stop one attack at most - and it doesn't really stop it, it just makes that attack target you instead.

But is there a way to fully shield the other character and guarante that the enemy targets you?  No. And given the size of the gulley going around you is distictly possible.

Keeper - I want to be sure I understand what you mean.  Are you saying that archers go down and out of the gulley and then try to move back up the ridge on the top of the gulley sides so that they would be shooting down at anyone in the gulley?  This means essentially climbing the ridge without the benefit of a nice gulley with a path to go up.  Technically yes, this is doable, but practially, no.  First you would have to go down the gulley past the "gate-like" entrance I mentioned.  That is very doable, but takes time.  Then you would have to climb back up the sides.  This is the problem - the ridge is very difficult terrain.  Diffcult terrain reduces your movement speed to 1/2 normal.  Dashing would not be possible.  Actually, I'd probably let you try if you want, but you would need to make a dex save.  Fail and you would tumble back down the ridge taking some damage.  So the problem is that you would likely be moving 15' a round up the outside of the ridge.  30' if you risked falling.  And it is still possible that you would reach an impassable point - you can't really see what is up there from where you are.  So, yes, it is doable, but if you were doing the 15' per round it woould likely take 4 rounds at a minimum to get to a spot where you could shoot anything.

Topic: Blacktooth Ridge Q&A
Subject: Game Mechanics

A reminder of how movement and actions work.

Those of you who are closest to the cave, and thus Dok, are still 30' from Dok.  That is one rounds movement.  Actually a bit more for a dwarf.  You could move to Dok, but not move him back on the same round .  A normal person can move30' on their turn (25' for short guys like dwarves) or double that by using your action to dash.  But you can't dash while holding a fully armored dwarf.  Such an object is quite heavy and not easily shaped for lifting and hauling.  I will let you use your action to carry him.  But that means a maximum of 30' of movement per turn - and you won't be able to do it on the first turn because you spent your movement just getting there.  Plus, if your strength is not 14+ you will move 10' lower than your normal speed.

So three of you can get to Dok on the first turn but not move him.

Then you could move him 30' per turn back assuming you meet the strength requirement.

The rules do allow for one character "helping" another accomplish a task, but officially the rules only cover something requiring a strength check - which I am not requiring here.  But it would make sense that two people could drag a dwarf faster than one.  So I would allow two of you to move at 45' per round - essentially allowing you to split your action - each gives 1/2 to hauling and 1/2 to dsahing.  The weaker character would not need to meet the strength 14 requirement.

But - if you dash 3 times + your con modifier you need to start making exhaution saves.  (I think only Hornet has dashed recently, but I would need to check.)  At 45' per round you would have time to get to mid river with three moves if nothing slowed you down.  Then exhaustion saves.

But - You know there are a minimum of 6 goblins still in the Vargolg and possibly many more.  You have no idea of actual numbers, but there are some at the entrance about to run out.  They are also 30' from Dok.  Goblins move at 30' per round just like most of you do.  Which means on turn 1 you would meet at Dok.  Combat seems likely to happen on the turn you get there.  Then if you wanted to retreat with Dok your action is taken up by moving him.  You can't fight.  And by retreating from combat you leave yourself open to an attack of opportunity.  More than likely multiple such attacks of opportunity.

But - on the bright side, if two of you are lugging the body you would be moving at 45' per round.  Sure, the goblins can move 60' while dashing, but they couldn't do so and attack at the same time.  With swords anyway, bows are another matter.  And if they dashed they might be able to get past you and between you and the river.

But - you also have a gnoll standing between you and Dok.  Technically you are not in melee with him (although darn close) so I wouldn't make you take an attack of opportunity to go past back towards Dok.  But he is there and would have to be dealt with coming or going.

You can always do whatever you wish to do.  I'm not trying to change what you want to do, but I do want to make sure you know how things work.  The choices belong to the players.

One other thing to note - the order of action, which you could tell from reading previous posts and would know if sitting around a table.

Actions will be taken in the following order:

1.  Thaoran, Silver and Hornet

2.  Gnoll

3.  Soledad (Dok did fit here)

4.  Whatever is in the Vargolg

5.  Gerdar

I mention this because if some of you attempt to recue Dok you will get there and have your action prior to anything from within the cave reaching you.  So you can't just swing at them for your action.  You could shoot at the entrance or you can "hold your action."  That means you tell me exactly what you want to do if something specific happens.  "If X occurs, then I do Y"  For example, you might ready an attack and swing if a monster comes within range.  Oddly, by going second, anything coming out of the Vargolg will be able to run up and swing.

So is all of that confusing enough?  Feel free to ask for clarification.

Oh, and one more thing.  Dok is unconscious from wounds.  He starts making death saves next turn.  He remains alive but unconscious until he fails 3 of those.  Fail 3 and it is all over.  Make 3 and you stabilize.  For a while.  So how long will he stay alive?

Sorry, saving the hero will not be easy.

*I would need to go back through all the posts to figure out Soledad's spell count.  Feel free to do so yourself, otherwise I will try and get to it tomorrow.

As the battle raged the party was gradually piling up goblin bodies, but also piling up their own wounds.  None had been lethal yet, but they were taking their toll.  The time to retreat was at hand – at least for most of the party.

The first to move was Thaoran, who found himself still in melee with a gnoll.  He darted backwards, using his blade to prevent the creature from trying to stab him with its spear as he moved.  He turned and moved quickly 30’ back towards the river.  As he spun he saw a sight that almost made him stumble in both fear and hope.  About 60’ behind him he could see a strange dwarf charging up the path!  The creature was shouting a warcry of some sort and preparing to throw a javelin.  Was this friend or foe?  He didn’t know, but generally goblins and dwarves were enemies and not friends.  He could only hope – if the newcomer was an enemy the party was likely doomed and there was little he could do about it.  But if a friend, perhaps they would be able to get some space.  He stuck with the plan and ran straight towards the newcomer down the gulley’s path.

Silver had a plan similar to Thaoran – run.  But not being engaged in melee she launched a firebolt towards the entrance to the Vargolg.  The gnolls were the more immediate threat, but she hoped to pin down the archers and prevent a charge once the web finished burning.  As an archer stepped forwards to launch its arrow it was met by her bolt.  The creature was hit and badly burned (-4hp) but didn’t go down.  She grimaced, they needed more than semi-effective spells, but there was little to do about it now.  She turned . . . and saw a strange dwarf charging towards her.  Surprised she came to the same conclusion Thaoran had and kept moving 30’ further down the gulley.

Hornet also ran, shouting for the group to get out.  Like all of the rest he was surprised to see the strange dwarf and like the others decided it didn’t change things.  He sprinted past the others and was passed by the strange dwarf as he moved down the gulley.

But Dok didn’t leave.  He stood his ground in hopes of getting the party a chance to run.  He sent a guiding bolt flashing towards the cave entrance but found no target, the spell splashing loudly off the rocks nearby.  But his spiritual weapon finally hit.  He had missed repeatedly with the spell in this combat, but this time he did not miss.  The glowing weapon swept down on one of the gnolls and dealt it a brutal blow.  (-12hp)  The gnoll was surprised by the blow but not down and Dok had left himself exposed with the multiple attacks.  Both of the gnolls in front of him struck him with their spears and both found their mark.  The dwarf had been willing to give his life for his companions and it seemed he might have done so.  With a slight *pop* the spiritual weapon disappeared and the dwarf slumped to the ground.  The gnolls howled in triumph and leapt over the dwarf’s body and charged down the gulley at the rest of the party.

Soledad saw the dwarf fall but could do nothing to save him.  She cast sleep hoping to cover the parties escape with sleeping gnolls.  It worked.  In part.  The injured gnoll staggered, stumbled and tumbled.  It was asleep.  Its companion was startled as its wingman fell to the ground and it found itself alone away from the shelter of the cave.  But it was very much awake and screamed in anger.  Soledad took the hint and ran.

A few arrows flew out of the cave, but the group had run far enough that the sheltering brush protected them and the arrows landed harmlessly amongst the vegetation.  But the web was now burned out and would no longer hold those inside back.

All of those actions left one wildcard in the gulley – the strange new dwarf.  The party’s hopes were answered as the stranger shouted a battle cry and moved up the gulley towards the fight and flung his javelin at the last gnoll standing.  His javelin hit the creature square and pierced its armor – the dwarf was now officially in the fight.  (-6hp)  He didn’t know who these strangers were, but he knew what gnolls and goblins were.  He had no doubt which side he needed to be on.

Overview:

Positions are as follows – beginning at the entrance to the Vargolg.

The web is now completely gone and the path from the cave is now open.  Numbers unknown but you can see the front of a coming charge.

30’ from the cave

               Dok is down.

1 gnoll and 2 goblins are asleep here.

60’ from the cave    (50’ from the river-end of the gulley)

one gnoll fights (one javelin injury)

              One gnoll sleeps

Silver, Thaoran and Gerdar – None technically in melee, but it wouldn’t be hard to get there.

90’ from the cave   (20’ from the river-end of the gulley)

               Hornet and Soledad

The river side of the gulley has an entrance that is about the size of a doorway – that is the only easy way out.  Twenty feet beyond that is the river.

Total Killed so far:

Goblins:  16 goblins and 1 gnoll

Currently asleep:  2 goblins (1 wounded) and 2 gnolls (both wounded)
