Subject: Careful Rat

SD - How far away are the archers?

Rat - if you have to circle around to backstab you leave yourself very vulnerable once you make the attack (Or if you are seen before hand - sneakyness can fail)- you will be exposed and perhaps away from help. Find out how far away they are (and how long it will take to get in position)before doing anything.

We don't want you to stab one and then find yourself sourrounded by several more or you just might find out what it feels like to get smacked by an orc!

I got one!

Ok, along with damage dice we all also need to figure out what to do. I think Anvil will attack one of the orcs between him and the wagon - I dont want them getting close to the people hiding in the wagons.

I am concerned about the big bad leader dude, but at least a crossbow is slow to load. I may go after him soon, but for now I don't want to get seperated from the group.

SD - do we need to roll init for the second round as well?

Assuming to-hit roles are a d20 as I remember, Anvil rolled a 17.

He also rolled a d10 and got a 4 since a couple other people posted rolls for that dice and I wanted to make sure I had rolled the right thing.

I guess we are learning this as we go!

That 17 smells like an Orc just lost his head!

FYI - there is a dice roller that generates random numbers right on this webiste. Go to the Armoury in the pull-down menues across the top. The first one is a dice roller that can give you the numbers you need. I'm pulling my dice out for nostalgic reasons, but I don't need them to get a number.

That generator is how I got my pair of nifty 2s for this encounter.

Subject: Charisma check? Remember Dwarfs are very charming!

Anvil rolls a 2 for initiative.

For a charisma check - I assumed that it was a d20. Is that right?

Our very charismatic dwarf rolled a . . . 2!

Gosh I'm hoping a low roll is good here.

As previously stated, Anvil has his sword and shield out. He will stay out of the way of missile fire, but try and make sure he is in front of the archers/spellcasters before the orcs reach them. He will attempt to clobber the first Orc to reach the group around the wagons. He will also release Sprinkles to attack. The goal is to protect archers and spellcasters. Hopefully his actions are coordinated with the strong-hearted and stout woodsmen!

Uhmmm....I like the idea of a sleep spell!

Hopefully the horsemen can cover their own (and out) rear for now, I don't think we can deal with that front just yet.

Well, I have a post partially ready to go. Hopefully soon, but life is hectic.

Hammer - I'm honestly not sure what the magic items I have do aside from the books - which are quite a boost! Care toenlighten me or point out where I can find the info? It seems others have had similar questions.

Seriously, though, good luck getting through the day - or however long it takes. That does sound like some fun.

I probably won't be back on-line until Sunday night/Monday anyway.

Well, there you go. I guess you won't throw them. In that case I would definitely hide until you use the spell - then hide again. Fight only when directly attacked, or circumstances dictate. A dagger would have at least given you a little distance, a staff doesn't.

Lets not show the Rat what it feels like to be hit by an orc.

If you are going to hold Muffin back until those in the back are directly threatened - I think that is a bit different from my original post. I THINK if you want to change that course of action you should post it on the game thread, just to make sure SD knows it is officially what your doing and not just part of the discussion.

And yes, as was so eloguently stated, Lets go kill some orcs!

Subject: Lining up for the fight

Upon seeing the group coming up from the rear, Anvil calls to the train to halt. Believing Rat to be fast he urges the little rogue to rn up front and warn everyone about the impending fight in the rear.

Specifically, he will tell them:
1. Figures, probably orcs, approaching from the rear.
2. The wagons will stop so we can defend ourselves.
3. The horsemen should stay up front to guard the front AND keep an eye on our flanks. Presumably they will look at the bodies at that time.
4. Extra woodsmen, walking or driving the wagons, should move to the rear to defend the wagons.

If there is time to turn the back wagon a little to give archers and mages a little something to hide behind we will do so. Regardless, the wagon will be used to offer whatever protection it can. The general pattern will be to give the archers room to fire, which they will do as soon as something that can be confirmed as an orc emerges fromt he smoke. They will coordinate - Trillian shoots the first, back woodsmen the next, Hammer the next, other woodsmen. Then keep shooting. This way the first orc to appear doesn't get 5 arrows and the second none. Trillian also noted the preferred order of shooting.

Individuals will do the following unless they post specifics for themselves:

Trillian - shooting arrows unless a group emerges big enough to warrant the sleep spell. (Specifics in Q&A forum)

T'Sal - Will save the magic missle spell for a wounded orc unless posted otherwise. Will get daggers ready to throw, but generally try to stay protected behind the wagons, keeping an eye on the flanks. Throwing daggers if the opportunity/need emerges.

Rat - Will go forward and deliver the message and then return, sling in hand to fire stones where he can. He will stay back to do so as any good rogue would.

Hingatuli Hammer - will come to the rear as quickly as possible with the dog when he hears from Rat. He will fire an arrow first, then switch to his axe.

Anvil will keep his sword and shield out. He will stay back a bit out of the way of the archers at first, but then jump in front of them if the orcs close for hand-to-hand combat. If they don't close, he will get his bow out.

Both dogs will be kept close until the orcs are near. At about 15' - when Anvil would be jumping out (With melee woodsmen and axe-wielding Hammer) the dogs will be released to attack. We don't want them charging out way in front of everyone.

To the group - there are a few assumptions in here (especially T'Sal) - I based this post on what was said in the Q&A, best guesses, and a desire to get the post up fairly soon - and most had posted something. Especially now that we are in life and death situations, please post away if my assumptions are faulty.

Subject: What to do when caught in the middle

Generally, unless otherwise specifically stated it is safe to assume that Sprinkles is with Anvil and Muffin is with Hingatuli Hammer.

Hammer - your call on the spells. Does the stones spell make sling stones more powerful than normal? Your spells - your call. I'm not sure it is worth takin your bow/axe out of the fight for long unless you can cast the spell before the orcs get here.

SD - I believe there are some woodsmen at the rear - do they have bows?

So, how do we inform those at the front of the caravan of the problems at the back? A shout? Send a messenger such as the Rat to tell them? We don't want the horses charging to the rear - they need to keep an eye out for whoever/whatever created the bodies. We need to know if Carus is among them - I'm guessing it is more likely that some are still alive if he isn't.

SD - How many men went this way with Carus? In other words, is it more than the 2-3 bodies that might be in the road?

I would think everyone gets ready to blast away as soon as they emerge from the smoke - and we can donfirm that they are orcs. Most with bows/spells. Anvil will probably hold onto his sword and wait for close quarters - it takes awhile to switch - and I don't think he will have time to shoot and then switch before they close. (SD - is that right? How much space do we have?)

I would think we:
-send Rat forward to inform the front group
-Line up using the wagon for semi-shelter wherever possible to shoot
-Bring Hammer and the other dog to the back to fight.
-Leave the horsemen up front.
-Wagon drivers stop and fight in back.

Anvil's not the boss, merely the mouthpiece. Tell him what to say.

Well, the Druid is gone.
I feel no need to respond at this point unless someone specifically wants an opinion on things.

Unless someone else has a burning response they need to get out, I'd like to suggest that we move on. I was excited to see the game on the verge of starting - lets get it going.

(I'm not trying to silence anyone that wants to speak - do so! But nobody else has responded in the last couple days. I'm guessing most have had a chance to see things by now. As I said, if you want to - post away. Otherwise, lets see what this crazy world has to offer.)

A quick question to start off ... I haven't rolled init in D&D in many years. To make sure I know what I'm doing - which dice am I throwing?

And, do you want that role posted here or in the game thread?

I think it is time to break out the dice and stick them in my workbag. Wonder what my students will say if they notice?

Topic: Oaks Heart
Subject: To rescue Carus if needed

Anvil glances at the group and says, “We didn’t come here to leave anyone behind. If the camp is under attack, we need to go there and get Carus out of whatever is going on. We need to get everyone back together. So we go to the camp as fast as we can."
Turning to the Waggoner’s he says, “Get those things rolling right away. Let’s have the horsemen ride in front. They should have the greatest mobility that way – I don’t want them trapped and unable to move behind the wagons. But don’t go charging into anything without backup! We act as a group!”
“Rat! Where . . .there you are. Ok, you want more fire? Ok, go. Quickly. I will be there and watch your back in a moment. Block the road. Try to NOT start the whole woods on fire! Fast. Get back. Go! Now!"
Turning back to the group Anvil continues, “Following the horsemen come the wagons. T’Sal – your spells might be best served in the wagon. Trillion – I’d think the same for you, speak up if you want to argue the point. Hingatuli – Why don’t you take the dog and walk near the front of the wagons. We need your eyes up there incase the fire lets infravision help. I’m going to make sure we don’t lose our rat. As soon as he’s done, we will bring up the rear. Rat’ll probably end up in a wagon. In the wagon – someone is watching each direction.”
Turning back to the wagons he says, if you have a couple extra men, a couple guarding the rear with me would be helpful. We know there are orcs behind us and in front – all eyes open!”
“Ok, I’ll be back with the Rat in a moment – those wagons are ready to go – move out to the camp!”

With that the wagons start to role. The marching order should be:
Horsemen
Hingatuli and dog
Wagons
T’Sal and Rat in wagons – Trillion if room allows
Anvil and remaining woodsmen

Rat was only going to spend a tiny amount of time building a fire – so he will hopefully be done as the wagons start to move. If not, Anvil drags him away as their spot in the rear comes up to move out.

Hingatuli will drop back long enough to cast his stones spell when Rat joins the wagons. When that is done he will return to the front of the wagons with his crossbow at the ready and axe available.

Anvil has his longsword and shield out.

T'Sal is in the wagon. Anyone else?

My guess is horsemen up front, wagons next and we flank the wagons. Sound good? Pick a location if you want one - we should probably let SD know exactly where around the wagon we are each standing. I'd rather not wing that on my own as placing your character could be important.

Subject: Load up

Well, it seems there isn't much reason to leave behind the horses or wagons. I guess they come with.

From the sound of it I'm not sure we would gain much time by dumping goods either. We can probably walk as quickly. Plus, Anvil at least wouldn't mind having his feet on the ground.

So with 3 votes in it is sounding like we might be all heading off towards the camp. Two more questions:

1. Does anyone want to ride a wagon?
2. I'm inclined to walk in front (with at least one woodsman to announce our identity.) - what say the rest?
3. Does anyone want to start a fire to slow down the chasing orcs?

Did I mention that I had intended to take riding as a skill? Does that count?

Setting a fire inthe woods is an interesting idea. Of course, these things have a way of getting out of control . . . Then again, there already is a fire going.

Topic: Q & A Oaks Heart
Subject: The game is afoot . . . .again!

Well, it seems the action has begun again. (Glad your feeling better SD!)

Anvil's basic thoughts:
1. We (At least Anvil) do not leave people behind, so we can't leave until either Carus' and crew have returned to the wagons or we have gone and found them.
2. We do not split up - at this point that would seem to include the woodsmen as well as our little crew. Thus we can't "send the wagons back" - while the rest of us stay here and do something else. We either take the wagons with us or abandon them.

Given the likelihood of an attack on the camp I think we need to go there. I don't think we can take the wagons with us.

SD - two quick questions:
1. How much would the wagons slow us down? Can they make it to the camp? I would assume so. Or would riding the wagons be faster?
2. If we unhitched the horses from the wagons, how long would that take? I would think they would then be able to go even faster than a dwarf could on foot - is that correct?

As #2 above implies, I'd rather not leave the horses attached to the wagons behind to feed orcs. I'm inclined to unhitch the teams and go quickly to the camp to rescue Carus if that is possible. But we all stay together - woodsmen and adventurors. If unhitching the horses takes too long we run the risk of being caught by those following the horsemen. Or caught between those at the camp and those following.

I don't remember what those scrolls did - would they summon aid? Not now, but perhaps at the camp if we found ourselves a bit outnumbered.

Subject: Wow. Now that was a reaction.

I have to admit, I think it was an over-reaction. It is your opinion, of course, but did you give Hammer a chance to explain?

I know he published my backstory as I submitted it. I felt his summaries were just that - summaries. In fact, I asked above that he create a short list of everyone for easy reference - these stories were similar to that sort of list.

Granted this assumes that the rest of the stories would be put out there in their entirety eventually as mine was. Only Hammer can answer that. But wouldn't it be prudent to give him the chance to answer that?

I don't want Hammer to rewrite everything I write (or even much of it). I also don't expect it. Anyway, if you truly do quit, I will be sad to see you go. First, we will miss a character and second, you seem like you would have taken the writing side of this thing seriously, which would have been great. I would encourage you to give Hammer a chance to get this thing off the ground and running and see how it works out. It can't be easy to start something like this. If not, good luck to you.

I will be sticking around.

Subject: Ready to go!

Awesome - the intro seems to be up and the time has come to begin.

A quick question for clarification. We seem to know we have 6 months of training before the Sand Dance. Do we know that these are the others with whom we will be fighting in 6 months? We evidently will be a "team" of some sort, but are we one already and do we know exactly who are teammates are?
Also, are we held as prisoners in a place in which we can easily talk? Do we train together?

Just checkin' before I make assumptions.

Also, Hammer - I know you have things listed out here pretty clearly, but you could you make a short list that just has character name, race, class, gender, and player name? It would be an easy reference that would help me a lot.
