Subject: As we begin

First, did we decide on travelling during the day or night? Since "most people" travel during the day according to our DM, I'd say lets go during the day. But what say the rest?

Second, Morrigu is making it really hard to like/trust her. This seems to be how you created the character and are deliberately running her. But I want to make sure it is clear - even though Trossach can't see the arguments inside her head, his reaction to her so far would be entirely negative. I'm not a big fan of inter-party conflict, so it is something to keep an eye on. But I can work with a character that is a bit "odd."

Subject: Threats are not needed

as the merchant offered a good deal on supplies, Trossach stepped back again. He was pleased with most of the members of the group. Ochit clearly would stand by people - and seemed to have a good sense of justice. Trossach greatly valued that and liked what he saw in the half-orc. Raynard had also been reliable. The Doc was smart. He'd acted to diffuse the situation, which was exactly what was needed. Smart. Trossach liked that. Yes, if this had been a test, 3 of the 5 had passed.

Crowe? Where was Crowe? Sitting back and drinking. Not a bad choice, call the test incomplete.

And then there was the fifth. He didn't think she'd really started it, but she certainly hadn't acted to settle things down. And that comment about the guys children . . . Trossach didn't like threats and he certainly didn't like threats against kids. Right now, the dark elf smelled of trouble. She would need to be watched.

With these ideas floating through his mind, the big Mul moved by the door to await his companions. He was ready to get out of the tavern and begin the expedition.

Subject: Who is who?

So, do we have a list of who is playing who? It would make it easier to know what to do, at least if the others would like to team up to take on a monster or a group of bandits as I think I would. Should we post short character descriptions here? Or, Shield, would you prefer if we just sort of ran it all through the game?

Subject: Delays

I believe I am part of the reason for the delay - I was trying to download a book to make my character when I appear to have gotten something really nasty (Like beholder level nasty) on my machine. Yeah, it was working at all. So, I've been reduced to a phone. Which isn't much good for writing up whole characters. But I am pleased to note that I now have a functioning machine and am in the process of creating Zick the Amazing Alchemist.

Be prepared to be amazed and enlightened.

And also, hopefully, get to begin to do things.

Just a quick note on your post - it doesn't look like the Doc was "rising to help" as in being threatening. But trying to draw attention away from the situation. Also, while the Doc's first statement was to the merchant, the second one went to everyone in the tavern, I believe.

I don't know if that changes your post at all.

Subject: Ochit, it is apparently also what they say after they already know him

"Ochit" was all Trossach could think as he saw the big half-orc defend the dark elf. Tross didn't want to get dragged into a fight by people he barely knew. And he had serious questions about the elf. But the half-orc was growing on him. Wise or not, he liked the sentiment that made the big guy defend the woman.

He kept his mouth shut to see what would happen, but he moved forward to stand a little behind Ochit. He wasn't obviously aggressive, he said nothing, and he was far enough back that his move might be missed. Someone really observant might notice. But from where he was he should be able to watch Ochit's back.

He didn't want to get dragged into this, but if things happened, well, he wanted to be in a position to assess what those things might be and react accordingly.

The suggestion to travel by night seems to make sense, but first a question for our GM. Is it typical to travel at night? What would people normally do?

Subject: Boring but important

Trossach moved with the eclectic group to the tavern to gather supplies. He hated shopping. There were things to do and this just felt like standing around waiting. But he was well aware of how dangerous the world they lived in could be. This was boring, but important.

As the other groups began to clear out, Trossach moved towards the now open group of traders. "Let us get our supplies and move on." With that he bought the 3 days of supplies he thought needed. The price was high, but it really didn't matter much. If this trip was a success they would have money. If it wasn't, they probably wouldn't need it. So why worry about a couple of coins. He bought his survival days and moved on.

After the others spent their own cash he spoke again. "With rations I am ready to move out. Does anyone else need another stop before we continue? Let us begin this Templar task."

Subject: And that makes 6

Trossach looked around at the group. It seemded that all had agreed to work together to accomplish their quest. Were they the dregs of the adventuring lot? The big warrior was sure that he, at least, was not. Ochit could clearly wield a blade as well. And Reynard seemed to add another weapon to the group. They were well defended physically. Crowe? He wasn't sure exactly where his talents lay, but the fact that he wasn't another big bruiser was probably good. And the Thri-Kreen - Trossach was actually quite pleased by its presence. A skilled healer might be worth its weight in water. Somehow, Klik gave him more of a sense of confidence than any other. Briefly he wondered if that sense was entirely his own. He'd have to keep his eyes out for such a thing.

Then there was the dark skinned elf. She seemed . . . odd. Disturbed. She reacted strongly and unexpectedly to everything. Ochit may have made the right choice to avoid being friends, although by the look in those eyes, it might have reprecussions. Hopefully the dark one would bring something besides trouble to the group, but Trossach wasn't sure exactly what that would be.

"It seems we six are a group. I welcome this. Let us now see what the Templars have gotten us into."

That works pretty well - the survival days, I mean. And the healing bug sounds pretty cool. And helpful for a Mul that might have a tendency to get himself into trouble.

And I don't think there is anything saying that Trossach can't hide. he just needs a really big door to hide behind. Or an elephant. Or a half-orc. If he ducks.

Keeper - what does Ochit look like? Just curious since Trossach, as a Mul, is 7' tall and built like a rock. Bald, armored, uses a maul.

Subject: The forming of a company

Trossach listened to the Templars speech. He despised the orders they gave. The reward was fine, he would work for money, but a threat was a good way to get an ex-slave angry. If the Templars thought that they would earn his services through threats, they were wrong. Which wasn't to say that he would refuse. He could use the money. And sometimes one did things because they were compelled by the powers-that-be. But if he did submit to the powers, he would do it on his own terms and for his own reasons. Not because of a threat.

Still, this was not a task he was likely to be able to accomplish on his own. Eventually there were six of them left. Perfect. The others seemed to forming groups of six, so this would work out.

He looked at those around him and listened to their comments. Crowe started the discussion - the Mul was glad someone had the courage to begin. "Ochit?" Trossach smiled. He liked the name. Their group just might have the two biggest warriors in the entire crowd. The bug was interesting. He had only met a couple in his life. The telepathy was weird. He didn't think it worked the other way - they couldn't read the minds of others. But as had happened last time he had met one of the Thri-Kreen, he wondered. A medic? That would be a very welcome addition to the group.

After several had spoken, the big Mul looked at each of the others in turn and added his words. "I am Trossach. I agree with Crowe - we appear to have a task set before us, and a better chance of success if we work together. I welcome good companions. Crowe, Ochit, Klik - I will work with you if you will work with me. A team." He looked at the last of those who had no yet spoken. "Hopefully you will join us as well."

Subject: Looking

I just got home from a long trip - I'll try to look closely.

I'd be tempted by some sort of a gnome tinker. This was actually the genesis of my Daxos character in Schnozzles game, but Schnozz seems to have disappeared, so maybe I'll try again. A goblin could make an interesting variation on this as well. The basic idea is someone who is fascinated by everything and wants to see inside of everything and how it all works. Typically this is a roguish character - not a thief, but a hyper-curious little guy who finds his way into everything.

I'm not positive yet, but I've wanted to play a character like this for a while and a steampunk setting seems like the perfect setting for such a critter.

I'll get to reading soon.

Subject: Why did the city stop?

So, what made the city stop? Does everything else continue flying up? If so, what made the city stop and anchor at some point.

Also, if you have reverse gravity it would wreak havoc on anything flying. Think about it. A bird flies by having wings that give lift and thrust. So, what happens if a birds wings give lift with reverse gravity? It would be like a bird pushing DOWN under normal gravity - it would push the creature down. Normal flight would push a flier UP at the same time that it is trying to fall UP. To actually fly under reverse gravity, a bird (or dragon) would literally have to fly upside down. That might look a bit weird. Fliers would have some serious adjustment time when they first enter such a zone.

If gravity has returned to normal, well now you need a reason for the city to stay where it was.

Subject: interesting

Well, if you want stuff to fall up, simply have some note that it doesn't affect the ground - anything not attached to the earth goes up. But the "world" does not. (Or perhaps, the world itself is what flipped. Things still fall "down." Not toward that massive earth as modern gravity would suggest, but rather towards whatever predetermined "down" there was.)

What impact would this have on flying creatures? In either the world where everything goes up, or just under the flipped city, would flying creatures have any problems? After all, they are used to certain gravitational effects. At the very least they might be disoriented if not native to the area.

For the flying flipped city - has anything come to live on top of the now upside down city? How much of the "undercity" was pulled up, and what remains in the ground? For example, are sewer tunnels now exposed on the sides of the ground that is above (but used to be below) the city? What nests in those? Did people survive in the city and continue to live there, only now using their ceilings as floors? Living on what?

How long ago did it happen?

What about water? Are there any water sources up top? fantasy artists seem to love waterfalls coming off of floating rocks.

If you did go with everything floating up you would need to figure out where it goes. How far up does it go? Does it disappear? Is there a massive layer up there somewhere of collected debris? Is it now creating shadows/cloud cover? If people float away what happens to them? (If those on the ground don't know, you still need to!)

Interesting.
