Subject: A dwarven shepard?

Well, if the dwarf must mind the horse for lack of an active player, so be it. Good luck getting new players. I'd recruit some, but have few significant connections with anyone here at this point.

Meanwhile, I guess the two of us have a hole to explore.

Subject: The cave it is

Before I post I think we need to discuss as a group exactly what we want to do.

Entering the cave seems obvious - and already started. I'd likely light a torch. Heironymus has no night vision, as the DMs post indicated.

I wouldn't think we want to leave the Dwarf on the surface, but then what do we do with the horse? That certainly isn't my call.

Is everyone up for some spelunking?

Subject: Path or Cave

Ok, I'm a bit confused. What paths are you talking about Brianna? Are there two paths that you have seen that would lead us to the bottom of the cliff?

Also, we appear to have a semi hidden cave entrance at the top of the cliff. Did you deliberately ignore that or simply miss it? I would think we would explore the cave first. If we do, what do you do with your horse while we venture underground?

Subject: Another possibility comes to light

As Kyara expressed her frustration at losing the trail, Heironymus took the opportunity to make his own exploration of the area. At first it all looked like a lot of rock, and more rock, and more rock, and more rock, and . . . you get the idea.

About the time that Kyara started to suggest getting to the bottom of the cliff, and idea the cleric did not relish since he did NOT have a feather fall or spider climb spell, his attention was diverted by another possibility.

"Uh, Kyara, you may want to hold off on the whole cliff climbing expedition. We may have something over here." There was a small hill at the top of the cliff (assuming my geography is correct) and when looking down from it an opening could be seen. At this point nothing else could be discerned for sure, but there was an opening in the ground. "There appears to be an opening, a cave of some sort, over here. Before I try sky diving, I think I'd like to check this out."

"Perhaps the trail did not run out. Our dear tracker, you may have lead us right to the source. Shall we find out what is within?"

As the group stood looking out over the rocks and at the cliff edge in front of him, Heironymus was tempted to push his fellow rescuers forward to get them to make up their mind. Not off the cliff, of course, just forward . . .some direction. Get them moving. Honestly, he'd seen rocks that made up their minds faster!

"Ok, folks, we have a damsel in distress to rescue. I know we don't want to make mistakes, but certainly we need to keep moving. Anyone here see anything worth investigating? Which way do we go? Slow and steady does not always win the race, especially when slow has become stop!"

Got one!

Derry was tempted to pump his fist, but knew that with three left standing, or charging, that there was much more to do before he could celebrate. Still, one down was a good start.

He appreicated Noctus' bravery in standing before him. He knew the swordsman would want to take down the bugbear himself, but also realized that combat with monsters was not the best time for bravado. Thus he was perfectly willing to stay behind Noctus.

In fact, Derry gradually backed off from the fight. He wanted to cast another sleep spell, or perhaps color spray, but there was simply no way to do so without hitting his comrades. So instead he utilized magic missile, aiming the missile at the bugbear in front of him. Well, in front of Noctus, in front of him.

Subject: Spells?

Can a cleric regain his spells in this way as he moves? If so he would do so - the same ones he used up for healing.

*edit* Ok, having read the game post it seems obvious that he would regain the spells during the rest periods since it has been a day or so of travel. Same spells as before.

Group - it seems that we are confronted by a T in the road - we can go to the left or to the right. (Assuming they didn't climb down?) I see no reason to pick on over the other.

DM - does the view differ one way or the other? Is there a change from rock to softer materal in either direction? Is there any way they could have climbed down? Are we assuming that we have already searched the vicinity looking for tracks?

If no further info is forthcoming, do we just pick one? Say go right, because it is the "right way?" At this point I don't have any info on which to base a decision.

Derry is now moving up to cast the sleep spell.

What are the rest of you doing? Do you want to be ready to charge once it has been cast? Stay back and use bows? Move to where you can see bows? I don't want to give any that are still awake a chance to arouse those who are napping.

With the group seeming to be in agreement on the value of sleep spell, Desiderius began to move forward quietly to get within range. He always felt a sense of satisfaction when his special skills could be of use. And, as always, he hoped fervently that he would feel just as satisfied after the spell had been cast.

Derry assumed the group would be ready to protect him once the spell was cast. They had always been there in the past. He moved as quietly as he could through the shadows to get to about 30 yards. He would center the spell between all 4 of the beasts and take down as many as he could.

(I can't say exactly where Derry goes because the map given of the building won't load while I'm at work. And yes, this qualifies as "hard at work!" But he will want to stay in shadow where possible, with cover if possible and avoid being in a direct line of sight.)

Subject: To the path

Having already started to move towards the woods when he was halted by further discussion, Heironymus is convinced that the time for discussion has come and gone.

"Ok, it seems it is to be the path. I'm heading towards where we think it begins. Let us all go together."

With that Heironymus moves towards the woods, although he goes slowly enough to allow Virif to join him.

(Heironymus will have taken the merchant up on his offer of a few days food. He walks with mace in hand.)

Subject: Ok folks, lets agree on a plan and do it

Just discussing in the game page takes forever. Lets get things moving.

Going back has some appeal as the dwarf noted, but it seems unlikely to be the plan for an adventure like this. Follow the path - it has been laid out for us and even the DM is pushing us away from going back. If we aren't going back, and there is nothing more to gain from staying, there seems to be only one way left - onward.

I say let the games begin and move out. I think it is really just the Ion Kired and Virif we need to make are agreed.

If we do follow the path I would think we try to make the best time possible. As was suggested - going up at most every other tree. We have ground to make up.

In the process of moving towards the trees when the dwarf sat down, Heironymus realized they were not yet done talking. Pausing he added to the conversation, "If the dwarf or any other can find another route, I'll listen. But we have talked a great deal already and the trail will not get any warmer. I, for one, know of no path but the one in the trees. S barring a better idea from better minds, I say we follow it, and the sooner the better."

As noted, I am here and would like the game to continue. I like Heironymus and I think things look interesting. I can be patient to get it running again. (But it is frustrating.) If somehow I miss it starting up again please alert me. I will be checking frequently to see if things are moving.

I'm ready to move out and hunt for dark elves!

As the merchant finished talking it seemed obvious that the group would get no more from him.

Looking at the others, Heironymus said "Well, that seems to be the amount of information we will have to start with. Some questions will remain unanswered for now at least. And he may well not know all of the answers."

Nodding towards the trees he continued, "lets move out. It seems that attempting to follow the path in the trees will be our best bet. I say we start there and see what the skilled trackers in the group can find."

With that Heironymus picked up his gear. With mace in hand he began to move off towards where the Dwarf had been attacked in the trees.

Can sleep be cast through the linens? Do I have to be able to directly see them? If I do, how close to I have to get to see them?"

"Lure them?"

"No. With the noise they are making I can easily get within 30 yards to cast a sleep spell. Those still awake can be shot with arrows. If they can get back in the building they probably have a key. Dead or alive, or even woken up, we can get in."

Subject: Time for some magic!

Derry looked hurriedly around the gardens at the statues everywhere. It was a bit frightening to consider the power of the magic that they were facing. This was not something he could match. But maybe, if things could be brought back to normal there would be hope for these people. De-petrification was possible for stronger mages. Just as petrification was the province of stronger mages. Grrr . . . stronger . . .someday that would be him.

But for now he refused to worry about it and instead surveyed the gardens and manor house for something his still limited skills could accomplish.

He saw the big beasties enjoying their meal. It was disgusting, even from a distance and behind a veil. He saw Crow sneaking forward to figure out what they were. Bugbears? He'd put a coin on bugbears. Crow had been brave enough for as long as Desiderius had known him, for now he just hoped he wasn't foolish as well.

Derry kept one eye peeled on the rest of the garden, lest some surprise emerge from amongst the supposed statuary. But he also kept the other eye on his companion, lest he need help.

He couldn't help but grin just a bit. It seemed that his skills might finally be called upon. It just might be nap time for some bugbears!

Ok, if people are busy I don't mean to be pushy - take time if you need it. But I wasn't sure if I was missing something. Is there something people are waiting on in the game?

It looks to me like the talk is over, the wagons are fixed, healing is done and we need to figure out what to do. My bet is to go back to the trail and follow that. Are there other suggestions?

Or is it simply time to set a marching order and head off into the great unkown?

Subject: Ok, so, itty bitty ogre children . . . ogrelings

Gnolls and hobgoblins I can deal with. Or at least better than Ogres. Kinda like Kobolds.

Things of that nature are easier than ogres would be with a sleep spell. It also gives me 30 yards. I would assume whatever else we do, that Derry would try to sneak up to within that range so that he can start the attack with his spell. Or let arrows hit, then hit them with the spell, if archers can even get a clear line of sight.

Ogres anyone?

That'd be my guess from afar anyway. 4 of 'em isn't an easy task if I'm right. Now I need to see what sleep would even do against such fine folk.

Looked it up - range = 30 yards.

Spell affects 2d4 worth of hit dice. Creatures with 4d+3 HD are not affected by the spell. If they are ogres - anyone know what their hit dice are? I don't remember off hand or have the book. Of course, they might not even be ogres.

Color Spray might be more useful, but I have to get within 20 feet. But it is a very short casting time.

Ok, I'm with the merchant on this one. Lets get things moving. Shall we head back into the woods and see if we can pick up the trail.

And - I'm assuming the healing spells were cast, or do I need to post more clearly in the game thread for that?

Group - we should probably do a marching order. Heironymus has decent armor and fighting ability and could be toward from or rear. Or perhaps the ranger or Druid at front?
