Topic: Recruitment for Dark Sun setting campaign?
Subject: Trossach

I am actually getting underway on character creation- and this world has some really cool possibilities. I did move away from the elf ranger concept as I couldn't get the feel for the character. Instead you will be graced by the presence of Trossach, the Mul warrior and enemy of all things slaver and oppressive.

Looking forward to it.

I was already assuming the Druids would be the source of information, but hadn't heard of the mirror pool. Sounds cool. The plan might be coming together. Ley lines are also interesting. Thanks.

I'm open to more creativity if anyone wants to add to this!

I have been really slow getting things going, but have been kinda waiting on a bit of information. Info on money and such would be helpful. That is my excuse for being slow at the moment.

I say keep it moving - we can back post.

As is, I'm not sure that we can actually make any decisions about things until we get to Pike. Our course of action will be determined by what we find there, how the city treats the captives, any information they have and what they decide to do - relative to the discussion of the two clerics. really, what can we decide before then? Especially if the prisoners don't know much about the place they were headed to?

So, keep it moving.

Anyone else have any ideas?

I'm thinking I might force then to go through the gate to destroy it, but then how do I get them back?

Come on, I know this site is loaded with extremely creative people!

Subject: Looking for ideas

I am hoping that some of you could help me come up with some ideas.

I am DM for a tabletop D&D game for some friends and their kids (ages 10 and 11). There are a lot of things going on in the game, but the next adventure seems to be falling into place as follows:

(First a little context - the game is using the map of the Sword Coast in the Forgotten Realms, but beyond the locations of major landmarks, is only loosely based on it. The woods in question is technically Neverwinter Wood.)

Ok, so the plan is that the group is trying to discover what has made the woods "go bad." (6th level) The basic idea is that the woods is home to a group of Goliath Apes (think King Kong) - these creatures are no problem in general as they are not inherently violent, but maintaining a breeding population requires some trickery. Specifically, the giant apes can create gates to other planes (Normal planes like this one, nothing fancy) where they can mix with other populations of giant apes which share a similar ability. Anyway, an evil race of "monkey men" from one of these other planes has discovered this ability and managed to hold one of the gates open after the amorous apes were done with it. They are using this gate to invade and are the source of the fouling of the woods.

Simple, right?
Well, the goal of the party will be to destroy the gate thereby preventing further incursions. What I can't figure out is how to destroy the gate. I'd like to do something more clever than "destroy the stone archway." Any suggestions? Plus, the possibility exists that if a gate could be opened in this way once, does closing this one gate really solve the problem?

Any suggestions?
Any suggestions for the woods in general or how to create a monkey city?

"Do you think we choose to be Feral? That we can just move on in to any old town we like? 'Come on in Matzan, we've got a little house all picked out for you and Ylena.' Peh. Most of us can't even get past the gate. We do just fine on our own." Matzlan's words echoed in Daxos' mind as the night passed and he slept near the fire. No. They didn't do just fine. Their life has hard and likely to be very short. Ok, so that seemed to describe just about everyone, but Ferals clearly had it even worse than city-folk. They were not doing just fine. And last nights near death experience for them was certainly proof of that. Even worse, "doing just fine" for them appeared to include causing great harm to others. And that was simply not acceptable.

But what was this meeting place he spoke about? And a better place to the north? That Daxos doubted. If there was still a place somewhere on this world unstained by the acid rains he doubted it would have remained a secret. So what then drew these ferals north? He could understand, although not sympathize with, the capturing of clerics, but this mass migration seemed to be a new thing. And if it came with a coordinated attempt to capture clerics, it presented a real danger to everyone. He wondered if other towns knew of their danger?

He woke to hear the two clerics arguing quietly amongst themselves. Move all of Pike? That seemed unlikely. Dax wasn't sure what he thought about that, but it seemed the first move was to get to Pike anyway. Probably any decision about moving the people would be made by the leaders of Pike. Certainly it would not be made by him. So, for now, it was time to move out.

But that did leave one problem unsolved, the feral couple would need to be dealt with. As he rolled out of his bedroll, Daxos spoke about the issue. "For now I assume the next step is to get to Pike. What about the couple? Given their history of attacking the towns, I don't think they can be freed. And despite his protests, their life was not ‘just fine.' I said I didn't want to abandon them, and I don't. I don't know what Pike holds in store for them, but it can't be worse than the wilds and they can't go anyway. So, I'm assuming they are coming with us. Any arguments?"

Subject: Ferals

Ok, some clarification is needed before I can post for Daxos. Ferals - Dax hadn't meant to imply that they were welcome everywhere, but what does he know about them?

Are they considered outlaws? (Obviously, but why?)
Would a reformed feral be welcome? Or tolerated?
Are they believed to be corrupt in some way? Not just bad by circumstances, by somehow inherently evil?
What would happen to this guy if we brought him with?
What made some people feral and others townsfolk - in the beginning?
Have raids happened in the past?
Is there anything else we would know about ferals?

Subject: Little, tiny tunnels for not so little, tiny people

Gelion did a quick search of the goblins. In fact, they did apprear to be goblins, just deep goblins. This almost seemed odd to the archer, who has always assumed all goblins were naturally somewhat native to the deep anyway. But it seemed there were goblins and then there were goblins. And in the case of these three, "were" was the right word. ‘step one' he thought as he grabbed the bag of stones and tucked in pouch. He left the masterwork club, thinking perhaps they would pick it up on the way out.

Gelion then followed Lini's lead into the tunnels. He did not like the cramped quarters at all. He knew he would be at a severe disadvantage if forced to fight in these conditions. He couldn't see well, his enemy could blend into the dark, and his bow was worthless. Crawling around in small tunnels was not his idea of fun. But there didn't seem to be much choice. Although he wanted to prove his worth, he was not unhappy to have the Varg bringing up the rear.

As he crawled through the tunnels Gelion did everything he could to keep his eyes and ears open. The little purple things (and anything else down here!) would be hard to spot in the dark. Gelion crawled with his bow and a sunstick in his left hand. It wasn't the most effective way to hold a bow, but he wouldn't likely be using it in the tunnel anyway. His right hand was empty because he wanted to be able to quickly make use of his bow if the opportunity arrived. But it was usually just inches away from his dagger. Somehow the dagger seemed like a better option in close quarters than a mace.

After a short crawl Lini indicated a split and a light down one branch. Gelion agreed with his companions - head towards the light. He tucked away his sunstick where he hoped it wouldn't show. It probably wouldn't matter - they had made so noise earlier the chance of surprise was likely gone. But it didn't hurt to try. As they passed to fork in the road that they did not take, he moved cautiously while looking and listening carefully. They did not want to get attacked from the rear.

He moved on after the rabbits.

Welcome to Trilogy.

I suppose we can waive the "must solve a puzzle to join" rule since even the DM doesn't understand the solution to his own puzzles. Let that be a warning about what you have gotten yourself into.

Daxos listened to Matzan speak and felt sorrow for those they had killed. It seemed unavoidable, yet there were so few people left that killing any felt like such a waste. Still, that was exactly what was wrong with Matzan's words. When the man had finished speaking, Daxos couldn't help but add his thoughts to the mix.

"Matzan, I am pleased that you and your wife were able to survive. There has been too much killing. But death is exactly what we are hoping to prevent - not just ours and yours, but the lives of the people of Pike are worthy as well. By stealing their clerics and destroying their water, you condemn them to death. We would see them live, just as you live. We cannot abandon Pike."

"Still, we would also not abandon you. There are too few people to throw anyone away - you, Pike or us. Perhaps you can find a home in Pike. Certainly it must be better than living as a Feral." He paused, and glanced at the others in the group before speaking again. "Our task is to save Pike from the difficulties your group has put them in. That must come first and any information you can offer on the priests that were taken will be appreciated." He looked carefully at the man as he continued. "But what was are to do after we bring water to Pike is undetermined. Tell us more about what Kaydn told you. What and where is Archumbra? Who were you to join up with? What is supposed to be in the Northland?"

Again, Daxos glanced around at his companions. "I cannot speak for these others, but I will not abandon the cities. We must all stick together. But if there is a sanctuary to the North, both cityborn and Feral could benefit. All could benefit. I would see you able to raise a family in prosperity if I could. Tell us what you know."

(OOC: If Dax should know about Archumbra, just ignore that line.)

Alrighty folks, we have a decision to make.

Gelion would head towards the light. I'm not a fan of greenish glows and movement, but light seems like a good choice. We might be able to put out our forward lights as we move.

Gelion would grab the bag of stones, but leave the club for now. Gelion will also grab the third sunstick, assuming he can't use his bow anyway in the small tunnels.

Q for the GM: How will you handle the bow in the small tunnels. Am I right in assuming Gelion wouldn't be able to fire it there? If he stows the bow and takes a sword out while crawling, how quickly can he switch back once out of the tunnel? Also, above I posted that Nam would probably trail - was that a safe assumption? With Nam in back, is it likely that anything could get by him? If they were attacked from the rear, would there be room for Gelion to turn around and assist Nam, or would he just be stuck behind him? I realize the tunnels may change in size later, but at least for the spot they are in right now.
