Subject: Ullrich

Ullrich is probably going to help the monks, they seemed most in danger of being overrun. He's tempted to let Thunngar deal with it, but thinks his bows range might be key. Assuming he can fire arrows, he will launch away. He will move up slowly if he can and not lose his rate of fire.

Question - with more ants around the clerics would Ullrich be more able to fire at those ants with out being in danger of hitting a monk?

I know your busy and hand impaired at the moment, but if you get the chance, could we get an update on which ants are left and in what condition?

Well, I had a feeling light would be an issue.

I suspect the lack of heat for infravision confirms the zombie diagnosis. Still I don't like the idea of zombies coming at me in the dark.

Anvil has torches, who else? I would think that Hingatuli is in midspell. Trillian and Anvil have bows out. That makes Rat or T'Sal the best choices for getting some lights on, I think. Perhaps we could light a torch and throw it far out as well, to try and increase the range of vision.

Thoughts? Do rat and T'Sal have light sources?

Subject: Group post is up

If we play hero I think the whole group would need to go - one little thief charging into the night seems crazy. For now, lets see what we are facing.

Also, we should probably look back at the description of the bunkhouse. Doorways can create useful bottlenecks for hand combat. Also, am I right that there is a back way out - or in? Need to check that.

Subject: Once more into battle!

*The following actions are based on the guess that the creatures shambling towards us are zombies. If at any point it becomes clear that they are not, we may want to change our actions.

Actions for the group:
Anvil - will get out his bow and start to shoot at whatever is shambling towards us. He will attempt to repeatedly hit one until it goes down, then move on to another.
Trillian - Will also shoot arrows at the foe in the same manner.
Rat - Will sling stones. At first he will use normal bullets, later switching to magiced ones Hingatuli has completed his spell. If the "zombies are out of range at first, he will help T'Sal gather the gear for a quick escape until they get within range. As soon as he can he will fire away.
Hingatuli - Will cast his magic stones spell on bullets for Rat's sling. Once completed he will use whatever missile weapon he has available to attack the creatures as the others are doing. As soon as they are within range and it is clear that they are zombies or some form of undead he will attempt to turn them.(Hammer - I am assuming this, clarify if I am wrong.)
T'Sal - As the one person unable to do much against zombies T'Sal will have three main goals: keep an eye out the back of the cabin, pack to flee, and keep the dogs from charging into the fray until things are close enough for hand combat. If the shamblers are not zombies this may change.

*These same actions will be followed for several rounds until the group gets more information - such as clarification on exactly what is coming after us. Feel free to post several rounds if it seems appropriate.

One more thing - we did hear a woman scream. Right now we are sort of hanging back and waiting for the presumed zombies to reach us while we shoot at them. Anybody pushing for being a hero and charging towards the scream?

Anvil is as much into this hero thing as anyone, I think, but I doubt that is a good idea. But I don't want to forget about the scream and light either.

Subject: Attack it is

Ok, it sounds like we are going to let loose the barrage. I'll post shortly.

Hingatuli seems to want to use the magic stone spell - and it seems like it might be a good idea.
Anvil and Trillian can shoot arrows.
Rat can sling stones - normal at first, magic once Hammer finishes his task.
T'Sal can keep an eye out the back door/window and try and keep the dogs from charging out and away from us. I don't think we want them doing that - not that I'm sure they would with how they are acting.

For now I think we are assuming they are zombies, but I guess we will see. We should be ready to run if needed. Maybe T'Sal could make sure we are ready to go if we need to leave in a hurry. T'Sal may be the busiest of all of us, even without actively fighting at first.

Did we have enything for lighting? Anvil has torches. Do we want to do anything about that? I guess we have infravision - wouldn't zombies show up with that - or more precisely NOT show up - thus revealing their true nature?

Well, it looks like we have some space between them and us, which is good. Do we launch arrows and spells without really knowing what is out there?

When deer hunting it is always important to shoot whenever you see motion - it might be a deer, so you don't want to wait and make sure or you might miss your chance. Of course, it might be a hunter. But they should be dressed in bright orange and not shanblind around in the woods late at night. Right?

Topic: Q & A Oaks Heart
Subject: Information needed

Well, it seems SD is back from the woods and we are back in them!

SD, a couple questions, as always:
1. Approximate distance to the woods and the shamblers?
2. How long untill we can get a good look at them?
3. The light and the scream - how far away at a best guess? Does it seem like it came from these shamblers - the impression I had from the post was that it was farther away. Do the two things appear to be connected?
4. What direction are they coming from - scream and shamblers? - I believe the orcs went North.
5. Anvil is on guard - but did the others sleep in armor? I want to say yes, but you're the boss.
6. How many are several?

Ok, group - what to do?
Do we wait for them to get close to confirm that they are bad guys or do we assume that they are? I'm thinking shoot first, talk later.

I doubt we will get more info on shambling until they are closer. For now, zombies seem like a reasonable and disgusting guess. Should we start with that assumption? If so - Hingatuli could get ready to try and turn them.
What do we know about Zombies? Do you need a silver weapon to hurt them? I didn't think so, but it has been so long since I have dealt with these things that I'm not sure I remember correctly. Will my bow be of use? I would think those with ranged weapons would want to launch an attack ASAP. Or, if they are shambling, we could run, but who wantst to do that? Sleep, as I recall does not work on the undead.

What light sources do we have to light up the situation?

Subject: A night out at "Camp Dead-Orc"

Before settling infor the night the group gives the camp a quick look around. As unlikely as it seems, they even look around for traps (Orcs could have left some) and secret doors. All wounds will also be given a second examination and dressing if needed.

Once that is settled, they get ready for an evening at "Camp Dead-Orc." They decide upon 2 hour shifts with the goal of getting Trillain time to study. One person and one dog will be on duty for each shift. (If there is more than one door to this lodge the resting dog will be placed near the other door.)

Watch 1 T'Sal
Watch 2 Hingatuli
Watch 3 Anvil
Watch 4 Rat
Watch 5 Rat

In the morning the group will look around the clearing a bit more when there is light. Then they will head off towards the bridge to see if it still provides an easy opportunity to cross the stream.

Subject: Did they leave the light on for us?

Ok, how many hours do we really need to rest? If these are two hour shifts - this gives us 10 hours of rest time. Of course, some of you will be studying or praying during this time. Did Hingatuli use any spells? If not, it is just Trillian who is studying - and thus does not take a turn at guard duty. Does that make sense to everyone?

Watch 1 T'Sal
Watch 2 Hingatuli
Watch 3 Anvil
Watch 4 Rat
Watch 5 Rat

Also, remember we have the services of Sprinkles and Muffin. I'm guessing one dog is asleep at all times, but we try to keep the other one conscious to help guard. If anything odd happens, do not hesitate to get someone else awake.

And no fire.

Does this work - I can post it on the game thread shortly if all agree. Also, since no one has argued for or against it - I'm thinking we are headed to the bridge in the morning. I'll post that at the same time unless someone speaks up - no reason not to keep things moving.

Subject: Generic Plans for Ullrich

Ullrich actions will consistently follow this pattern:

1. Attack those opponents that are directly threatening himself or teammates.
2. Attack "twitching" ants if there are no "active" ants within easy reach. Although Ullrich would prefer to attack thoe that pose an immediate threat first, he will not waste time and lose attacks crossing distance if a twitcher is nearby - unless it appears that someones life depends on it.
3. The first goal is to eliminate the ants threatening the South Enders. Once that has been completed he will want to help out the other groups ASAP - everyones chances improve the longer more defenders remain.
4. When helping out other groups he will typically use his bow - help, but there is no sense spending time running across the sands when a good bow is at hand. He prefers to use his bow over his swords, but it all depends on the proximity to the enemy.
5. In upcoming turns it seems likely that he will be targeting the 5 new arrivals, but it all depends on the above points.

Cheers!

Subject: the Night

In the interest of keeping things moving . . .

Ok, it seems Hingatuli is our only cleric and he has no healing spells. So unless we use a potion, we have no healing ot do. But, as was pointed out, we can regain a point each by resting. A good idea. So I guess that is all we can do to heal.

One sleep spell was cast - did anyone else cast a spell - if not, they don't need to pray/study, do they? So only one wizard, either Trillain or T'Sal should need to study. The other is available for guard duty.

Two people per shift? Two hours per shift?
Anvil and Rat
Wizard and Hingatuli
Wizard and Hingatuli
Anvil and Rat
Anvil and Rat
That would be 10 hours total - 6 hours rest for everyone, plus time to study and rest for the "sleep casting" wizard. I just tried to give people at least 4 hours straight to rest. Anvil and Rat get the least sleep.

Night guards are hard if we only have 4 people who can take a shift. We also have the dogs. Do we dare go with only one guard at a time? How much rest do we each really need?

I agree no fire.

Also, consider posting about what you want to do in the morning. Anvil suggest checking out the bridge - to see if we can cross the stream (How big is it anyway?) without having to go right next to the orc caves.

Anvil -3 (now 8/11)

Well, we still don't have a schedule for night watch - although we do have a generous offer from our courageous and musical Rat.

Also needed for a general post: Who has healing spells and who needs healing? Where do they get used? I would think we cast healing spells now with the idea that we will have the chance to get them back with a night of studying/praying.

I know Anvil is hurt, I need check how much. Who else is hurt and who has spells? Spell caster has last call on who gets healed.

Ullrich thinks tha sounds wise. He will attack ant 1, row 4 as suggested. He will likely switch to his bow after that, but it may not be necessar or wise depending on where the new ants are at that point.

Well, I think Thungarr can handle things here. So, Ullrich will grab his bow and start shooting arrows at those approaching ants.

Subject: Ants!

Well, I think I need to change my plan. It seems that Bumble Brew will lightening bolt the ant I was thinking of having Ullrich attack. Assuming he has time to see the result, Ullrich would attack the ant if it lived. If he doesn't have time to wait and see, or if it dies, he will switch to his bow (And move by arrows if this is required) and start shooting ASAP at the leading ant headed their way.

This would leave Sir. Yder to finish off the twitching ant, I don't remember the number - the one I listed earlier.

Question - are the approaching ants close enough together to get hit by a fireball? Anything that inflicts damage on several of them at once gets an approval from me - although it also sounded like a lightening bolt was in store.

I found a map of the Forgotten Realm on one of the "companion web sites" listed on the home page. It has no details - and certainly didn't include the town of Oaks heart, but it does include Kentil Keep and the Moonsea.

Just curious - I have never campaigned in the Forgotten Realms before.

Subject: Camp

Ok, I posted. As always, speak up - we can always change plans. At least until the DM has launched things at us. At that point you only get to blame me.

I did pick going back to the camp. It had some support before, plus Hammer made a good argument for why the orcs might be gone. It isn't far out of the way and is the best shelter we know about. It is close enough we still have all options open for the morning. Plus, as Hingatuli's vision is our guide at the moment, it seemed to make sense to give his words some extra weight.

However, Anvil is concerned about walking back into the battle zone. I put the comment in about the smoke to give us a chance to back out again if it looks bad. Let me know how you want to react if it is smoky still.

Should we try the bridge in the morning?

Also, I'm leaving it up to someone else to post a schedule for night watch. Earlier comments about studying, etc. were good. Don't forge the dogs.

I hope this worked.

Subject: Saying good bye to Carus

After discussing things with Carus and making sure the woodsmen are out of the apparent danger zone, the group decides to continue their quest.

"Ok, Hingatuli, it's your vision. At this point you will really be the guide. I think we are all guessing that the ruins are the source of things, but speak up if that seems not to be the case. The camp is SE instead of NE, but it doesn't seem to be far out of the way. And like you said, it will offer shelter. We hope. We will head back there to camp for the night."

"Be very careful guys, we know these woods were crawling with orcs just an hour or so ago. They might have left. Or not. I want shelter, but I'd prefer to get it without a battle. If orcs do appear, spellcasters need to keep their heads down."

"Unless anyone objects, we will head to the camp for some rest. In the morning, with the sun on our side, we'll strike out for the ruins. The bridge might be an option. We can talk about that when we get to the camp."

If the area as they approach the camp is still filled with smoke the group will stop to reconfirm if they do want to move on to the camp.

The camp still?

Well, it isn't that far out of the way. That is a fairly good reason to think they might have left. Perhaps they have also left the bridge area - we might still be able to cross there and avoid the ford area and the caves all together.

Or the bridge could be a good ambush site. I'll post something soon. All ideas put into consideration.
