Subject: Speaking for the whole Inn . . .

Do not be sorry about asking questions.  How else will you find out?  There is no reason you would know and, honestly, every GM does it differently.  I've been at the Inn for awhile and don't know how that will be handled in this game.  Also, speaking as another character whose life may depend on your character getting things right - please ask!  I don't wanna die!

Now that we have 4 of us around a table, how do we want to handle that converation?  Castle probably wouldn't normally have just come out and said that he saw the letter get dropped off, that is valuable information.  But to get things moving I did.  Is this another chat it out in PMs moment?  Or just as quckly as we can by post?

Castle opened the door for Haze and followed him in.  As they crossed the first floor to the stairs he took the lead.  He had a general sense that the kid would feel less nervous if someone older were there to make him look legitimate.  As he climbed the stairs he couldn't help but wonder what the kid had seen.  More than any kid his age should have to witness from the sound of things.

When they reached the second floor he moved over to the table where the priest and another man stood.  A biker from the look of him.  Interesting.  "What can I do for you?" the priest asked.

Before responding to the question, Castle turned to the kid and said, "Why don't you get some of the food and then come back."  It was, after all, why the kid was here.  He then turned and responded to the question.  "Hey.  I'm Alex.  I was here for the meeting earlier.  As have others here, I've seen the Man in White.  And I saw when that envelope you have got dropped on the table.  I'd be curious to see what is in it."

Subject: Spells and such

I was looking at spells for Bory and while I do plan on taking goodberry - I was not planning on using either Cure Wounds or Detect Magic for his other 1st level spell, instead opting for entangle.  But depending on the party makeup, I'm not sure if that is a good idea.  Will someone else at least have the detect magic bit covered?

Subject: What is in a name? A Bory by any other name . . .

Ok, so I admit I might have gotten a bit carried away by the name.  First I decided I wanted to make a druid.  Then I had to figure out the race - I tend to run humans and I didn't want to do that here.  So an elf?  Kinda bland.  So no.  I settled on gnome, even thought they tend to be tinker and rogue types.  So now I needed to figure out who this gnome was that he would love nature as much as most gnomes love gadgets and alchemical stinks.  And the name.  Names can tell  you a lot.  So I got to thinking about names.  And gnomes can have a lot of names.  And it grew from there.  Well, the first name grew and grew and then the other names multiplied and pretty soon you had . . . .

Borborybodboddynock Eric Heatherplanter Ezuri Badger Packmaster Rootwalla Meadknocker Waterknott Daergel

(The order doesn't really matter as long as it starts with Borborybodboddynock and ends with Daergel.)

And yes, you can call him Bory.  If he likes you.

Borborybodboddynock – It is a family name, ok?!  My great grandfather had that name when he single-handedly beat the ogre of the High Moors in one-on-one combat!  Not bad for a 38 pounder, is it?  It is a proud name, so take that, “Bob.”   (But you can call me Bory, most of the time.)

Heatherplanter – What sort of name was that?  There were stories about his other great grandfather and a young gnome lass named Heather that everybody wanted to get to know and great gramps won her hand.  And greatgrandma was named Heather.  At least one of her names was Heather.  But Bory wasn’t so sure.  There were always stories.

Eric – What??!!  What sort of a name was Eric?  It wasn’t ‘Bob,’ but what else did it have going for it?  “Hi!  I’m Eric.”  How exciting was that?  Why’d they give him the name Eric?  But at least it was better than that boy down the road named Sue.  His father had really done him wrong.  Poor kid kept getting in fights.  But then, how can you not laugh when someone says, “Hi!  My name is Sue.”?  You respond with “Hi.  My name is Eric,” to let him know he isn’t the only one with a dumb name.

Meadknocker – He’d earned this one early on when only a young lad and he had raided his father store of mead.  Honey and booze.  What was there not to love???!!   Yeah, he’d earned this one and had a few friends back home that still just called him “Mead.”  The thought made him smile.  And thirsty.

Ezuri – the legendary elf warrior.  Supposedly his great grandfather had fought with the great elf once upon a time.  He was beginning to wonder how many great grandfathers he had.

Waterknott – He’d been known to sit and stare at the swirls in the water for hours.  It fascinated him.  Nature.  It was almost like the other gnomes and their tinkering and chemicals.  He could stare at nature for hours and try to find the mystery in it.  It worked for a glass of mead as well.

Badger – kinda boring, but he liked this one.  He wasn’t sure if it was about when he raised those young badgers he’d found or about a personality trait, but either way it was kinda flattering in a stubborn sort of way.  Not all names can be as good as BorBoryBodBoddyNock.

Packmaster – It was wolves that time.  Who didn’t think running a pack of wolves through the center of the village was funny?  I mean, come on!  You should have seen . . . ok, so a few things got broken, but they could be fixed!  Now those faces – they might be forever frozen that way!

Rootwalla – This was a personal favorite.  He’d earned this one.  He’d managed to make a wall of thorns and roots that saved several gnomes from some attacking goblins.  He’d had a scroll.  But ‘wall of roots’ really doesn’t sound great, so over a few mugs of mead the name had morphed.  He liked this one.

Daergel – A clan name.  A good name.  Nothing interesting though.  Except the family history.  All those great grandfathers.   That was interesting and something to be proud of.  So a good name.

Yes, the rest of the character is under construction as well.

Yes, that is a spoiler.  I'm working on him now.  Although I haven't gotten much past the names yet.

Thnaks for the info on the magic - one last question.  It sounds like magic isn't so much suppressed as controlled or regulated.  Is that a fair statement?  So people can be be seen using magic - that alone won't draw suspicion, correct?  Also, the tatoo - it isn't always visible, is it?

Subject: Druids, the sisters and magic

The description about magic generally says "magic users."  I assume this means any and all magic users whether wizard, sorcerer, cleric or even those paragons of goodness and vitue, druids.  Correct?  Before I can get to far into the background and nature of the druid I am wondering what druidic groups might look like on the continent of . . . .(Can't remember the name - the one with Ghosttown on it.)  Do they usually register?  Are they usually or sometimes hidden?  I am envisioning a druid that uses the circle of the moon and makes use of wildshape a lot.  But that seems like a rather obvious use of magic.  I'm not against the semi-hermit type option either, I'm just not sure where groups of druids fit in.  Gotta have had a mentor at some point.

Kheric is posted in all his red glory.

A question - how big is this town again?  I'm just wondering how long it will take before they are known to most of the inhabitants and how fast news travels.  How quickly, for example, the various crimial elements and just the lazy ones will communicate.  Or if they might remain anonymous for a while.

The game is afoot!

Subject: A starting point and a contact

Kheric looked around at the others in the group that sat listening to the captain.  It was not a large group nor was it composed of your run-of-the-mill humans.  Small wonder that a dhampir had not drawn the attention of the captain . . . the captain who had just finished his speech with the typical "any questions?" bit.

Kheric couldn't help but think to himself that there were far more questions then answers at this point.  They knew almost nothing about the job.

"Captain," he started with a brief nod of his head.  "Certainly you know more then just that the drug is here.  What is it called?  How is it ingested?  What does it look like?  Having just arrived in town, as I believe have some of these others, "and at this he nodded at some of those who had shared the barge ride into town with him, "I know nothing of this problem.  Even these basic elements would be useful.  In addition, it would be helpful to have a starting point.  Could you give us the name of any known users?  Do you have any in custody at the moment?  Is there a tavern or part of town most associated with the drug?"

He paused for a moment, but before the captain could answer he added another bit to his growing list of questions.  "Also, these tokens which will allow us meals and rooms - will they also be recognized by others in town?  So that people will speak with us as representatives of the guard, but also so that those who are responsible will be able to mark us as guardsmen right away?  For that matter, is the Two Moons a guardsman's tavern?  Will staying there mark us as guardsmen?"  He wasn't actually even sure if the town was big enough that it mattered, but in most towns those on the wrong side of the law tended to know who the enforcers of the law were.  It might be to their advantage that at this point they were not yet known to those elements.

He had more questions, for example, he thought there was some money still to be discussed, but he figured he should stop before the list got any longer.

Fixer listened as the group convered with their armed host.  He was glad to see that at least one other had picked up on the kindness bit.  Being a jerk usually didn't pay. Well, sometimes it did, but not often, and likely not with someone like this.

But he wasn't the groups mouthpiece, so he stayed in the back and continued to look around the room while listening to the conversation.  Corporate law?  That was an interesting bit.  It didn't likely mean much, but it might mean the guy knew some interesting things.  He looked to see if there was a good way to get a glimpse behind the curtain into the room the "queen" had gone into, but he didn't want to push his luck.

The other DM I have worked with allowed multiple goodberries to be eaten at once and I don't think the spell says you can't.  I would imagine it is sort of like Merry and Pippen eating lots of lembas bread - they belch a bit but are fine.  But int he end it would be up to the GM.

Rests provide healing as well, so healing takes care of itself if you can squeeze in a nap.

Subject: Healing

If I do a druid (likely - haven't had one in a long time.) they have the goodberry spell which, if I remember correctly, allows me to basically use up an unused spell at the end of the day to make somethng like 10 berries.  Each provides food for one day and heals 1 hp.   So essentially I think even a druid can heal 10hp per day.

Subject: Not a good time to find the captain.

William Wiley looked around the deck of the Dog and didn't see the captain.  He really didn't want to track her down.  Somehow searching for a woman famed for her temper when her sister was in trobule with the law did not sound like fun.  But delaying talking to her under the circumstances might have even worse reprecusions.  Between a rock and a hard place - hopefully it would leave Cracker more than just crumbs.

His first move was to approach Sharky.  pulling him aside he whispered, "Does the captain know what happend with the first mate?  have you told the captain where you last saw her?"  (Assuming an affirmative - he moves on.)

Receiving a nod when he asked if the cap'n was in her quarters, he headed below.  He approached the door to the captain's quarter and knocked.

(OOC:  I'm assuming knocking is the protocol.  Also, that the captain is the correct spot in the chain of command to go to.  If I'm wrong, please correct both assumptions.  Another assumption - that the captain already knows Shark Tooth's story. This would tell Cracker that she already knows all about that situation that he knows. He then doesn't need to add anything to it.  If Sharky doesn't know if she knows, he will cautiously lead with that information.  Sort of, "Captain, I'm guessin' you already know that the First Mate might be in some trouble locally?" type of thing.  After that he would share his information on local shipping.)

Kheric watched as the pier came closer.  He didn't mind boats, he'd spent a fair amount of time in a river town already, but he did prefer to have his feet on solid ground.  There was something about the opaqueness of the water that he didn't like - as if something could sneak up on you at any time.  But such things rarely happened and a boat ride down stream could make for a pleasant evening - when it wasn't blisteringly hot.  He didn't mind the heat and humidity so much, he actually disliked the cold more, something that others always found odd given his dhampir nature.  But not minding it and enjoying the sopping heat were two different things.  He wouldn't mind finding the shady inside of a tavern.  Perhaps there he could find some information about work and money.

Sometimes you find the solution and sometimes it finds you.

Visitors, Travelers, & Adventurers!
Chandar beseeches your aid in a matter that
threatens to disrupt our way of life and the
local economy.
Should you desire to offer assistance you
will be compensated for your time and effort.
Lodging and meals will be provided as well.
For more information please come to the barracks
and seek out Captain Jirolin Urtius of the Chandari Watch.

It was almost as if the sign had been placed there just for him.  He read it twice hoping it might offer more details, but it didn't.  "Captain Jirolin Urtius."  Kheric wondered what he would be like.  His previous captain had seemed like a good man for some time until all of a sudden he wasn't.  How would this Jirolin match up?  There was only one way to find out.  He turned to a passing sailor and asked about the barracks.  Receiving a quick gesture and a "thata way," he followed his terse guide's information.

As he approached the barracks he saw a man outside waiting.  Although he couldn't be certain, he had the look of a captain.  Who else would wear so much in this heat?  Then again, he wore armor as well, if lighter.  And the man had an experienced air about him as most captains and seargants do.  Well, he passed the eye test anyway.  Now to see how he reacted to Kheric based on the eye test.  An intial reaction to a dhapir could tell a lot about a man.  This man just asked if he was here about the poster.   "Have you come regarding the Call to Action we've posted? My guards are already stretched thin and we could certainly use any help we can get."

"Yes.  It doesn't say much about the threat, but I am interested."

Castle watched as the man/thing left the alley.

He had many questions still unanswered.  Damian, apparently the things name, did not seem to know everything, but he knew something.  And Castle had questions about Damian himself, which he likely could have answered had he wished to do so.  But clearly he didn't.  He looked down at the phone in his hand and wondered what it would take to make him call it.  He wanted to dial the number right now.  But that obviously had not been the intent.  So he resisted that urge.

But he had spoken about leaving information upstairs.  That would likely be the letter he had left for the preacher.  Castle was now very curious about that letter.  He paused, about to turn back into the bar, and wondered, why would the Man in White be here because of Damian?   Just more questions, but perhaps the letter upstairs would help a little.  He turned to move inside.

(OOC:  I'm assuming the above didn't take long to ponder, but that our lurking skateboarder would likely jump out to talk before he got inside.  If not, he'd go upstairs and approach the preacher once the others are gone.)

Subject: A brief shoreleave is over.

It was time to get back to the Dog. Cracker wasn't actually sure if he was safer on the ship or not. With the authorities looking for the First Mate they would be drawn to the Dog if they knew where she was from. Being on a pirate ship when the authorities showed up was a good way to get labeled a pirate. And that was a good way to get dead. But he'd thrown his lot in with this lot already, and if he wanted to stick with the Dog it would be best to get back on board quickly. Besides, if he was going to have second thoughts about a career of piracy, well, that ship had already sailed. He grinned inwardly at his own silent pun. Nobody else would likely appreciate it, but he did.

When Higgins got to the shore and asked if he was done with his leave already, he nodded. "Yeah. Had a bit of a drink and a bit of a walk. Lets get back to the ship, I hate sitting in the sand." With that he (hopefully with Higgins) climbed in to the boat. He would make small talk as they headed back to the boat, but didn't know what to say about his day. He had some information about the town and a lack of information about the First Mate. This was news for an officer. He didn't even know what to say about Cole. Or to who. But Sharky had beaten him to the Dog and he almost certainly knew more then Cracker did.

He'd just have to wait and see. But his other information did need to get delivered.
