Subject: Big bad dudes eating little helpless dudes?

Well, it seems to me that we have an opportunity to prevent someone from meeting a bad end. So, I'm guessing we want to move up and stop this little feast. No?

How elevated is this terrace? Do we expect to be able to jump onto it? Can we see enough to shoot arrows? Is there a convenient spot from which to cast a sleep spell before they even know we are here?

Oh, and how big is "big?"

Subject: Somebody can play the good cop

"Alyn, we have been peppering you with questions. It is ashame we have to do so at a time like this. I do hope you understand why it is necessary if we are to help you find your daughter." Looking the merchant up and down Heironymus went on, "and it seems the brigands did more than steal your daughter, one of them also tried to leave her fatherless."

Moving forward to inspect the mans wounds, the cleric continued, "Let me see those wounds. If we are to begin the chase as quickly as possible, we must fix both you and your wagon. There is no sense letting them finish you off while we are gone and you will be more able to make the return trip in full health. So first lets clean the wound, then I an heal it fully."

Hieronymus takes his time cleaning the merchants wounds and then casting a heal spell. (As indicated earlier in the Q/A forum.) As he works he keeps a calm and kind hearted conversation with the greaving father hoping to get more information in this way.

"Your daughter seemed very kind. She certainly didn't treat the hired help like servants. We all appriciated that in her. She must have had many friends."

"Don't worry about some of their questions, they just want to help. Perhaps if we discussed other things? We signed on to help out without even really knowing what sort of things you sell. What type of goods do you sell?"

(Assuming the above is answered)
"Really? I have never known much about such things. Generally I either purchased most goods in the markets or the temple provided them. It is much easier that way. have you met many interesting people on your travels?"

"Travel, yes, it has always been something I have wanted to do, as you can see I am here with you. Did your daughter enjoy travelling? As your daughter it would seem hard to not have bug."

(Assuming he denies that she has travelled much again.)

"Of course, you had already said that, hadn't you. But then I guess I have been paying more attention to wounds than words, which is probably as it should be. In my temple the lead clerics always carefully controlled who got the travelling assignments. I was priviledged as I was a favorite of the prelate, but others weren't so lucky. You'd be amazed at the kind of stories that can run through a temple. But I suppose business is the same way. Rumors and favoritism - politics I guess you could call it. It is everywhere."

Heironymus works very deliberately on the wounds. If it seems the merchant is annoyed at his (hopefully) subtle pumping for information he will hurry the task along. Otherwise he will drag it out. Perhaps not even finishing yet, if the answers are good.

Subject: A list is a good idea

Heironymus had tried starting such a list on the game post, so I think this is a good idea. Let me add a few things, although some of these are more questions than facts.

1. We do not know if the girl went willingly or not. There didn't appear to be any sign of struggle.
2. Thus the inside source could be the daughter.
3. We have no idea what the objective might be. (Beyond getting the daughter) Ransom? Politics? Romantic tryst?

Do we have any idea where to go from here? There was apparently no path in the woods, so how do we follow the brigands/dark elves? We know what empire they are supposedly from, but where in that empire/city would we go?

Heironymus just arrived in the area and has only very limited knowledge of even the most basic geography, although he has looked at a couple of maps.

Subject: Wax gold coins anyone?

Wax kobolds?! Who would make wax kobolds?! If you were going to make yourself a villanous, evil army of wax, wouldn't you make something other than kobolds?! Well, perhaps he shouldn't be so harsh on the spellcaster, Derry thought, since he certainly couldn't make wax golems, kobold or otherwise.

"Magic again," Desiderius noted as he retreived and cleaned his hastily thrown dagger. "This spellcaster has many talents. But I doubt he is in the immediate vicinity. A mage who can make a golem, even one as weak as a wax kobold, could probably have tossed around a fireball or two. Since they haven't done so, I suspect they are not here at the moment. 'At the moment,' being a very critical concept."

Looking at the building as Crow moved forward to inspect the main doors, Derry added, "And entry appears to be a bit more challenging than it did a couple of minutes ago. It seems like we will all be going around and checking the side doors. I'd really prefer not to have to scale these walls and somehow I doubt digging will be as useful a second time."

As he looked towards the large, and now well fortified structure, he added just loud enough that everyone could hear, "And I am very glad that you guys are on my side."

Ok, so one "friend" describes him as "more physcially vulnerable" and another ways wants to put arrows in his derrier! With friends like these . . .

(They need a better laughing emoticon!)

Acutally, I suppose "more physically vulnerable" is probably a fairly reasonable way to put it. As for the derrier, you could try shooting at this:

You are now free to return to your regularily scheduled Kobold butt-kicking.

Well, if no one is directly in the way it sounds like Derry should be able to hide behind the muscle and cast sleep. He would probably aim a bit to the right of center (or wherever he can hit the most) since we have folks on the left flank.

Subject: Let the games begin!

As the Kobolds issued their challenge, Desiderius turned to confront them. Good he thought, nothing like a common enemy to quell a little dispute. No sense arguing about surprise now.

Desiderius was glad to see the muscle in the group charge to the front as they had in previous encounters with the goblins of their last adventure. He had no problem letting them put their talents to use where they were needed most. And he would do the same with his talents.

His greatest help in this fight would be if he could get off a sleep spell. He stepped a bit to the side to get a view, but didn't want to leave the cover provided by those in armor.

(Derry will first consider using a sleep spell. It is unclear to me at the moment if he can get the spell off without hitting his comrades. He would cast it as quickly as possible in an attempt to capture as many kobolds as possible with it, but making sure to not get his friends. He would rather get fewer kobolds than one of his teammates. Assuming the character would know the specific conditions confronted and the abilities of his spell, if he doesn't think he can safely cast sleep he will use a magic missle on either the one closest to Crow, if he seems seriously pressed, or the one closest to himself, if Crow is not in immenent danger.)

Heironymus had watched the various discussions carefully. His heart went out to the merchant, yet information was needed.

After the merchant returned to the group and expressed his intent to return to the city they had recently left, he spoke up again, "Sir., I can only officially speak for myself, but it appears these others agree with me when I say that we will do everything we can to find your daughter. This is a burden no father should have to bear. Yet bear it you must. We will do what we can to lesson this burden."

He looked around at the rest of the group, "It seems our task has changed. We are no longer guards, but hunters. I suppose we must go back to the woods and see if we can locate a track to follow. Otherwise I am not sure where to start. Well, we must start by fixing the wagon. As soon as I have finished with the wounds, I shall help with the repairs. Someone had also better keep watch. We have been attacked once here already."

Derry couldn't help but shake his head at the potential dissent in the party. He was not a fan of splitting up. Seeing the floor plan, it appeared that anyone going in through a side door would have more than one door to pass through to reach the ballroom. In fact, both groups would. That provided too many opportunities for problems. He had to admit, he thought Noctus was right about this one.

But all of these thoughts stayed in Desiderius' head. The two sword fighters needed to work this out. Hoepfully Brandr would stay with the group. If he didn't want to, Desiderius wasn't about to stand in his way.

"I never meant to suggest I thought we were unobserved. Given our mode of entry, if anything was watching, it has seen us. That doesn't mean it will act right away. But it probably means that it is too late to sneak in anywhere. Either we have been seen, or nothing is watching. Front door, side door, whatever. If the front door is the direct route, I suggest we use it."

Subject: A not so random target

The comment about insisting the merchant come with the group drew Heironymus' attention from the task of healing.

"Unless our employer can shed more light on the situation, I think we can safely assume that the girl was the target of the raid. Once they had her they left. No further attempt was made on the wagons or their owner, even when the rest of us had disappeared into the woods. No, they had what they wanted and they left. And they wanted it badly enough to leave three of their group behind. They didn't come with enough manpower, or elf power, to take the entire caravan. They came equipped for a snatch."

Turning to the merchant he continued, "But that does raise some interesting questions. Why your daughter? Blackmail? A child makes sense for that, but not when the principle source of wealth was also right at hand, and yet it seems no attempt was made to capture you. In fact, one of them seemed to be attempting to kill you. Why kill the father just as you are kidnapping the daughter? Odd, isn't it? Yet it clearly was not random; Harl was put into this group and he went out of his way to get to know the girl. They knew what they were after."

Lowering his voice in sympathy with the merchants loss, Hieronymus contnues, "I realize this must be a hard time for you, but we need answers if we are to find your daughter. Do you have any idea who would have done this? Do you recognize this symbol? Dark elves? They don't mean much to me (I'm assuming since my new arrival in the area I have little knowledge of them??) but do they to you?"

"Perhaps it is best that you look after your livelihood, but if you want us to be successful we need help. There didn't seem to be any clear path to follow in the woods, and who knows if we will be able to trust our senses even if we do find a path, so do you have any suggestions on where we should start? We were hired as guards, not for search and rescue. Not as trackers."

As he finished Heironymus couldn't help but wonder if the lack of a trail leaving the clearing where the dwarf was accosted might also be an illusion.

As far as injuries:
Marga - 8 Cure Light Wounds (Comp Languages)
Virif - 3 Cure Light Wounds (Obsc. Mist)
Allyn - 3 Cure Light Wounds (Sanctuary)
Kyara 3 Cure Minor Wounds x3 (Read magic, detect poison, light)

A little overkill on the 3 pt wounds, but we might as well start at full strength. Happy to be of service.

Heironymus responds to Kyara's request by moving over to help the wounded. "That arrow certainly doesn't look like an illusion. Ok, lets get that taken care of."

After healing the leg wound Heironymus looks around and say, "Now, who else needs to get up to speed? I'll worry about the dog last, but I should be able to heal the good beast as well."

He also nods towards the wagon and notes that "we probably still need to fix that wheel." (I think the wheel is still broken, correct? Or was that an illusion as well?)

Since a dark elf was seen in a tree probably casting the original illusion I would guess there might have been an elf in that tree when Virif was befuddled in the woods.

We can take the gold and maybe the symbols with us. The armor and weapons could be put in the wagons for now - no sense giving them up for nothing if means of transport is available.

Are there any guards left alive or is it just the PCs and the merchant? If so, where is he going to go with the wagons on his own?

Finally, Heironymus will get down to the business of healing characters and the dog. Could I get a list of injuries? Or can I just say he casts whatever heal spells are needed? I'm guessing I need to choose which spells I am converting into healing spells, correct?

Subject: Who woulda thunk a tunnel would work?

As the tunnel was finished and the group prepared to enter the dome Derry couldn't help noticing how simple muscle had been a match for magic on this occaison. Or at least appeared to be a match for getting in. While he missed the opportunity to be the one to bring the dome down, he probably couldn't have done it anyway. The simplest way was usually the best. And it had worked, which really is what mattered.

Once o nthe inside he looked around carefully. The red eyes of his companions made him uncomfortable, but there wasn't much he could do about that. The dead birds made him very worried about those who should have been in the manor house. And the oil substance was . . . odd. Desiderius bent down and scooped up a bit of the stuff on a stick. (Just oily, I assume?) Not much there.

As Noctus celebrated his victory with the map Derry couldn't help shaking his head a bit. At least inside perhaps the female distractions would be gone. Except the princess . . .

But for now the swashbucklers endeavours had indeed brought them something useful. "Ok, well, it seems we have an idea where to go. Do we go in the front door? It hardly seems likely that if anyone is on watch that they failed to notice our entrance."

Subject: A few thoughts for everyone

Well, I assume it is fair to say we looked up the tree (cautiously) before moving on. After all, at least two people noted the need for results to tracking in their posts. Did we see anything?

I'm thinking out loud here - we know:
1. The dark elf in the tree was the caster - any ability to say if the timing of the arrow and the disappearance of the illusion go together?
2. Dark elves in the attack
3. The target was the girl
4. The girl went willingly - maybe knowing what was going on, maybe running with her protector
5. Harl was in on it
6. Probably some other guards were in on it as well - the illusion. Also, no other guards are here now, right? bodies or alive?

We should do:
1. Heal - I assume we'd like that before moving much further.
2. Search the bodies for clues
3. As the merchant what he knows about illusionists and dark elves. Also, why would someone want his daughter?
4. Decide if we abandon the wagons to search for the girl.
5. Assuming we go after the girl - how well and where can we hide the wagons. This is probably left to the merchant - More time = better chance to save his investment but also lower chance to find the girl. Let Dad decide.

Assuming we go after the girl -
1. Which way do we go? (Dependent on tree, body search and merchants info?)
2. Does the merchant come with us? Does he even want to? If not, what does he do?

Finally, what time of day is it? Speaking of which, in this world, how muh of a difference is there between day and night?

Comments anyone?

Heironymus took a look at the dead guards throat and . . . no, not guard. Harl. The man had a name. Heironymus had seen snough death in his life already to bedgin to feel jaded, but he didn't want to reach a point where he would stop noticing when people he knew had died. And he did not want death to become faceless. Death was a tragedy and Harl had lost evrything.

Yet, the others were right about healing anyway, there was no point in trying that at the moment. So what next?

Heironymus, stood up straight and looked cautiously around. "I suspect they have fled. It looks like this was either a kindapping or an escape. Who knows which? Either that or we have left the wagons and the boss unguarded during a true robbery. Either way we should probably head back. Once there we can try to figure out what to do. Be careful, our boss appears to have lost his daughter. And he will probably see it as WE lost her."

As Heironymus started to move back towards the wagons he added, "and I can look at your wounds once we are there as well."

After speaking with his companions Desiderius stepped back and called out to the guys who looked to be attempting to make a bomb. "Be careful. And give us some warning! We will want to be able to see what impact your experiment has on the whole bubble. For that we need to know when it is coming!" Under his breath Derry could not help mumbling, "And to get under cover. Beware of peasants, moonshine and an open flame!"

Before the entire group dispersed he also added, "Hey, when they plan to set off the explosion, we might want to all be ready to move. If it does anything it will probably be to just weaken the thing a bit. If it does, we'll want to be ready to try to run through the thing. All together would seem to be the best idea. I'm going to go check on the digging, but when they are ready to blast, lets get set to react. Let me know if the bubble responds to any of your attempts. Andif it does, does it weaken at the point of impact, or on the opposite side."

With that Derry moves off to observe the digging, standing back a bit with the apprentice. He gives the apprentice the same basic guidelines. Look for weakness in response to any of our actions. He makes sure to stand well back from the bomb team, but keeps a close eye on their activities.

Heironymus moved forward to the where Raif was examining the body.

He wanted to look quickly at things. Were there any wounds? How had he been killed? This assumed he was dead, which seemed likely. Was there any chanced that he was still able to be revived?

Certainly here was one of the colaborators If the girl was gone, this had been her guardian. It seemed he wouldn't be getting what he had expected. Did people never learn that this was how such treasonous acts almost always worked out? Live by the backstab, die by the backstab. Stupid, unfortunate, fool.

"It sure would be nice to be able to talk to this guy. But Harl's being here means the girl came through here."

(Heironymus is specifically looking for evidence of any kind on Harl's body and for a chance to see if he could be healed and revived.)

I like the way the game is going right now. Twice a week deadlines, but if life allows us all to get posts in early, what the heck, why not move things along? But there is time allowed if that isn't possible.

As for inactivity - I would prefer not to be left inactive - to stand around slackjawed in the middle of combat, for example. I would say have us do very basic things that seem obvious. In combat - attack and defend. But probably attack whatever is closest. Don't charge the dragon, for example. And limtied use of spells. But logical stuff. It keeps things moving, but still forces/allows us to make all the really critical decisions.

Heironymus dodged away from the dwarf's swing. He hadn't thought he had come that near, but it seemed the battlemage dwarf was a quick little bugger. He might do well to remember that.

After having taken a swipe at him, it seemed that the Dwarf's vision cleared. He lost the far away look and stopped swinging at things that were not there.

"Virif, you ok? If the illusion has left you, we should follow Raif and the dog. The dog appears to be onto something."

(Assuming Virif is indeed free of the illusion, Heironymus would follow Raif towards the dog. But he wouldn't move on until he was sure of the dwarf - for his own safety and that of the dwarf.)
