the rests really do make a big difference for healing in 5e. Fighters get a second wind ability as well that can help.

Subject: Dark Sun

Maybe I missed it in an earlier post, but is there a good place to get info on the Dark Sun setting? I don't know anything about the world to work up a background. Right now all I know is magic withers life, god-king, hidden clerics and mages and slavery.

Subject: Thoughts

We seem to have a rogue, warlock (maybe, spellcaster anyway), barbarian and a ranger or two. What about healing? Normally there is always a cleric in a party. I get why there might not be in this setting, but I'm curious if the DM has any thoughts about how the party might handle the need for healing.

I'm ok with whatever level you want to do. One is fine, I tend to prefer starting fairly low so that you get to create the character. Sometimes groups start at 2 or 3 just to help survivability. But I'm fine with 1.

Post up.

Marching order down a little tunnel?

I'd think Lini, Sukuni, Gelion, Nam.

Lini as the little guy leads.
Nam as the support staff trails.
Sukuni and Gelion could go in either order. I put Sukuni further forward because of vision, but whatever.

We probably need to state an order as well what tunnels we are looking down or moving down.

As the last of the goblins fell, Gelion grimaced at his wounds and moved forward to inspect the bodies. He was pleased to hear Nam praise their efforts, but he knew it had not been a perfect fight. Wounds had been taken. It certainly wasn't his first wound, but it was also clear there were probably more in their future.

He inspected the body closest to him - while he did look for valuables, he also wanted to get a better look at just what they were fighting. These things seemed to be goblins, yet not exactly goblins. And they cast spells. was there more that was odd about them than their colors? Were there obvious weakspots? Or strongspots? He quickly examined and searched all three bodies.

He listened to the others as he searched and examined the bodies, only speaking after the others. "Nice shooting. Lini, why don't you take a peak down some of the tunnels. I won't be able to see much. Also, if I'm unable to stand in those little things, I will also have trouble using my bow. But I have a blade for such quarters."

Well, I'd lean ranger, although I can always do whatever is needed.

Daxos is already getting the dead old cleric into the pavilion. I really think someone needs to get the woman inside - with others helping to make sure boyfriend understands the goal. Who knows, he may have more salve. Someone needs to get the clerics out from in back as well in case their spells are needed.

If Impulse hasn't posted (Haven't checked yet) and I am to post his guy that is what they would do.

Have fun on the cruise Impulse. Sounds like a good time. Look out for icebergs.

I would always loot first. There might be something useful.

I think we need to look down all of the tunnels before heading down one. As I said earlier, someone with good eyes needs to volunteer for the task and post. (If someone already has just ignore that comment as I just realized I hadn't checked the game thread yet!)

Subject: interested

I lost a couple of games when Alacrity stepped back from his games. I'd be interested - at least as long as it was a good party. I've never had much interest in playing an evil character.

I do know that the next two weeks are crazy busy for me so getting something started might be a bit slow, but I'm sure I can get it done. I haven't even thought about a character. If wizards and clerics are rare, would it be odd if the party had none? What about those druids that are fighting a losing battle? Or rangers?

Topic: Pathfinder: The Runewen Chronicles
Subject: Fugitives? Now what would that mean?

Sirion listened to the responses of those around him and nodded. They confirmed his suspicions. Townsfolk were frequently divided on the nature and quality of the local guard. This town appeared to be no different.

But one comment in particular caught his attention. "Fugitives." The man had clearly said 'fugitives.' That word didn't generally mean the same thing as 'criminal' or 'thief.' Many might consider the Tengu by the bar a thief, but few would use the word fugitive without reason. To be a fugitive in general meant that you were running from something or had escaped from something. What would that mean?

Sirion listened to everything he could and, as usual, tried to absorb it all and give the others the impression that he was just a casually curious stranger. He looked at the man who had made the fugitive comment and asked, "fugitive? A fugitive from what? What is there to be a fugitive from around here? Trepus seems like a nice place."

He listened carefully to the response hoping to find something would give him a clue. He was also curious about the comments about the guards causing trouble. Usually those who disliked a towns leaders and their armed lackeys needed little encouragement to complain. If needed he would prime the pump with a comment about the criminals in the town guard of Westbridge. Whether it was true or not mattered little, the comment was only to keep the people talking. But he would hold his tongue until he heard the response of the first man - there was no need to start a fight amongst the locals.

And then there were the two by the bar. Just what were they up to? Clearly they were up to something. It was becoming a very interesting morning.

Subject: Oh joy, limit break. I'd rather have the hp.

Gelion is feeling rather left out. I was already to post when I saw that you had already finished. I think that such a blatant disregard for his involvement deserves at least a few hp back as compensation. At least a few. I'm sure of it.

So, group, what do we do now? We need to clear out the tunnels in general, not just those three. We have several different tunnels to choose from. What do we do before we start crawling down one?

Search the bodies, I assume.
Maybe examine them to see if we can identify anything about them and their "goblin nature."
Do we peer down each of the side tunnels before choosing one? I would think so. Who does so? Anyone have better than average observation skills for some reason? I would think one of the bunnies get the job since Gelion has no darkvision. We could always toss the sunsticks down the tunnels to add to the vision as well. After all, as the GM's post notes, the element of surprise has been lost with the gun shot and that nifty little scream they did.

Subject: The had survived

Daxos looked around at the carnage appalled. So many dead. So many people gone.

He looked at the kneeling man covered in spiders and felt sorrow. "Can the woman be saved still? We need to talk to them. Without her, the man is lost. Get rid of the spiders and see if she can be saved, please."

With that he looked at the body of the priest that had been brutally slain by their assailants. He ran to it shouting, "Someone help me get his body into the pavilion before the rain takes it! It is too late for him, but we need to identify him." Daxos does his best to pull the body into the pavilion, hoping that one of his larger companions will assist.

(OOC: I am assuming that the priest is, in fact, dead. If there is any chance that he is within range of a heal spell to revive the unconscious, Daxos would first check for that possibility. If it is not too late, he would, of course, shout out that information.)

Topic: Slate Q&A Thread
Subject: Combat

I really don't have a problem with how combat works. This is how it seems to go in all of the other games I have seen. It is the nature of a posting game. A little speeding up where it can easily be done and the results are obvious is fine.

The chat option is a nice one, although as you said the timing is hard. I get on this site almost every day. But that is not the same as saying that I can manage a specific time. However, I suspect that most of the time I could manage something. Or, as a rogue, a general sense of "I will stay back and shoot arrows at this type of target," could be given if I was the only one not able to be there.

As for the amount of combat, I think it is best to just see how the game plays out. Combat is a fun part of the game, but not the only part, especially as we try to get used to a new world. I'm glad you said that not all contacts with bad guys have to end in a fight. That is something we can keep in mind for future encounters. But there has to be some hint of that from the other side as well. Daxos does not like the idea of killing off all of the remaining people in this world. Silly, peace-loving rogue. It is in the nature of the class, right?

Topic: QotW: Inspiration
Subject: everything I have come in contact with

I think I have been inspired in some way by almost everything around me.

The Lord of the Rings is the unquestioned king of the hill. It also inspires my interest in almost everything else.

Currently Magic the Gathering has inspired names, monsters and overall challenges.

Les Miserables is a perhaps an unusual source of inspiration for twists on characters and campaigns.

Travel - it has inspired names, settings and even little details like drinks, food and that drunken idiot in the tavern. Museums and treasure.

History - revolutions, wars, sneaky tactics, art, treasure, names, royal traditions, noble behavior, cultural interactions, travel, trade and everything else.

Monty Python's Quest for the Holy Grail. Nothing truly straight forward, but it does creep in there. Something about taking 45 HP of damage from a massive crit - "it's just a flesh wound!"

I tried to find some unusual examples. But the truth is that it is Tolkien, Tolkien, Tolkien and more Tolkien.

Daxos dodged the swordsman's blade as he moved backwards firing. He was relieved to see the spellcaster go down again, but watching his own arrow bounce off of the warrior woman's armor didn't help any.

If at first you don't succeed, try again. He moved a couple of steps backwards to allow the large post to offer him some shelter and drew aim again. He aimed at the swordsman that had tried to remove his head earlier. Let us see how he looks as a pincushion, he thought to himself.

a question about the map - it looks like nobody is near Daxos other than his allies and a corpse. But I thought someone took a swing at him. Is he further away because after the attack he moved backwards? That swordsman will be his target regardless.

So, a couple quick questions about the FF system.

If Gelion gets +3 for his strength with his magical bow, is that +3 to both hit and damage.

Feats - I seem to remember there were limits on when you could use them. What was the limit?

Subject: Spelunking we will go, spelunking we will go

Gelion rode the rails into the darkness.

He kinda liked the sound of that. It had an epic sort of sound. Now it just remained for himself and a couple of rabbits (Not that he would say that out loud!) to do something epic. Or, at the very least, to do something that didn't get them dead.

He was reasonably pleased with how things had worked out at the top. They'd gotten decent information and he felt that his questions had been good ones - if perhaps delivered a bit fast. But that had more to do with the circumstances than anything else. And he had gotten some answers. Plus, they had someone who could operate the carts and who had some sunsticks. What more could a buy want? Besides real sunlight, that is.

But he headed down into the dark with a little confidence. As they approached the cave he did so with a rapidly beating heart, but also some confidence. He could handle this and had companions that could as well. He hoped. He didn't really know any thing about them besides that they could get themselves killed in his dream. Well, so could he come to that. He would have to hope they were competent just as they would have to hope he was.

So he moved towards the room even as he and their pseudo guide heard some noise. Then the lights went out. No surprise there. Happily the sunsticks immediately brought illumination. He'd have to find out how the lights were put out.

But now that the lights were back on there was no time to worry about such things as 3 odd looking tiger striped things stood in front of them. He didn't like the idea of just shooting before finding out if they were hostile, but the noises they were making left little doubt as to their intent.

So Gelion immediately nocked an arrow and let fly. He aimed at the #2 "thing" whatever it was. It seemed to be the one closest to him. He'd fire two shots in rapid succession, at the same target most likely, but if it fell, the second arrow had a convenient target almost directly behind the first.

(OOC: Based on the comments on the Q&A thread: with rapid shot = +4/+4 1d8+5/1d8+5)

Daxos leapt from the roof of the shelter and slashed at the woman in charge of their enemies. He felt his bade meet flesh and wanted to grin. But his happiness was brief when the barrels exploded and the water showered down around him. And then he both heard and saw the ax crash into Clary's chest. And the old cleric fell as well.

He didn't understand the attack on the water. Didn't their foes need the water even worse then they did? And killing the cleric? Where did these fools expect to get their water from? Dax didn't need the water, they did! The death of the cleric also hit hard. He didn't know the old man, but his death felt completely unnecessary. Why would you do such a thing? There were so few people left anyway. And perhaps Clary meant even one less. He really didn't know Clary and honestly hadn't liked most of what had been said so far, but still. Death would be a bad thing and a member of the group was a member of the group.

Of course, all of this went through his head rapidly as he sought out his next target. He'd lost the safety of the roof, and now needed to find spot from which to fire. He rapidly moved backwards towards the part of the shelter that had walls - he would stay on the outside and use it for partial shelter. His target? As it had been with his first shot of the fight, he would aim at the spellcaster. If anyone came for him, he would have to adjust and target them.
