Subject: Zombies, zombies everywhere

Trossach was worried about the elf that had been bitten. Did that transfer some form of contagion? And how quickly? They would have to keep an eye on that.

But in the meantime it seemed that some of the zombies might be headed up the hill towards Morrigu and himself. Morrigu the mage . . . in the midst of combat the detail registered, but he chose to simply file it away in the back of his head for later processing. She was a wild card in so many ways already, what would spells add to it?

Forget about it for now, he said to himself and grabbed another arrow. He would target the zombies headed his way. It seemed likely that each would take multiple arrows, so he would need to start now, always aiming at the one closest. If needed, he could switch to his trusty maul or the skyhammer. But for now it was all about arrows.

I think Savis should retreat - towards Zick so he can heal him. That way he can get healed without forcing Zick to run forward. The monkish hobgoblin will likely follow, but that can't be helped. Zick is also near last in initiative, so your move comes first. If you choose to run towards Angel for healing, Zick would throw a bomb.

Sometimes I hate computers.

My old laptop has been having trouble. So I bought a new one. But since I don't have office on it yet, I needed to create the character on the old laptop so that I could save a copy easily in Word. But as soon as I tried to open the internet to post the information the computer flipped out. It is currently restarting and I'll see what I can make work. So another delay.

But I want you to know that I do have a start on the character.

Rhyson Ezuricai of House Tandris - and elf mage originally from a small outlying community near Valkris.

Details to follow as soon as possible.

Subject: Healing, bombs and other stuff

Ok, Nimu, you let me know what you want to do. If you feel like you have better stuff to do, I can heal. If not, you do it.

A note to the group: We will want to think about combat in the future. Having Savis close for melee combat is nice in that it puts a meat shield between the rest of us and the badguys, but it does take away Zick's best weapon - his bombs. The will splash. He can probably throw it in a way that misses such targets a lot, but not all the time. Right now, I'm not sure he can. He does have other options, but actually using a traditional weapon is not his first, or even a very good, choice. I'm not saying not to do so, but it is a tactic we need to keep in mind.

Q for the DM: Are either of the baddies we can see far enough from the Puppy that Zick could hit them with a bomb without hurting his ally?

I have a couple of ways to heal.

The wand - I would stay at max range for safety. Not sure what that is.
Potion - I can toss him a potion. Would that take my whole action?

But yes, I would move to keep the Pup alive.

Well, since I have a couple of fighters and a roguish type in my other three games, I'll go with a mage in this one. Obviously this will require learning about magic, but I assume that can be done. As for race, if I'm going to be a mage, let it be an elf. Why not?

Subject: Congratulations on your vic . . . oh, wait. There is more.

As the last of the bandits fell, Zick was about to urge his companions to be careful, there was still the invisible one about somewhere, when three new figures emerged from the building. Dang! He had known that was a possibility all along, but a little guy can hope, can't he? Still, they had managed to get through the first fight pretty well unharmed, so it wasn't like they were in rough shape. Besides, it was very nice of them to all stand so nice and close together.

With that idea in mind, Zick grabbed another of his bombs (he still has 4 left) and chucked it at the figure in the center. Splash damage should be a given for this.

(Other rounds: How do you handle crossbow loading? You had a bandit load and fire on the same turn. I had one gm who said crossbows take a round to load and then a round to shoot - so you only shoot once every two turns. If he can load and shoot in one round, Zick would make use of the splashbow. As for future actions, he will likely keep using his bombs, at least as long as he can do so without harming party members - always targeting for maximum splash effect. If the three separate for some reason he will target the one closest to him. If they are mages as appears to be the case, he won't use the tanglefoot bags. (Am I right in assuming that tanglefoot bags wouldn't stop movement for spell casting?) But he does have thunderstones he could throw - if the group is not "splashable," they appear to be mages, and he can do so without affecting a party member - he would throw a thunderstone at a mage. It has a chance to disrupt spells. I forgot to look up attack numbers before posting, but they haven't changed - his dexterity pumping mutagen should still be intact. )

It is good to see you back in the Inn.

I have enjoyed your games before and would love to do so again. Honestly, either of those would work. I have no experience with either, so it is a wild card for me either way. But so was WWII Horror and that was cool, so why not jump in? If I had to pick the sci-fi one seems a bit more like the kind of things I read and such, so I'd probably pick that one. But a spy game is pretty cool too, so whatever.

The key idea is this . . . count me in!

Subject: Pacing

I kinda like the faster pace. That said, I expect these games to be a bit on the slow side just because of the posting schedule, so whatever. The only important thing, I think, is that you need to hit the pause button of anything significant changes. For example, in the Dark Sun Game finding out that the zombies explode kinda changes how you might want to fight them. In this fight knowing that someone disappeared might be something we need to react to. Use your best judgement on that as I doubt we'll complain much. Certainly if it is just "bandits" then the fight can be sped up. Then again, if the ladies are mages of some sort we may need to react to spells that change the scenario. But most of the time we can account for that in our posts.

Subject: Bombs, bombs, beautiful bombs!

Zick smiled as his second bomb found its target. These guys were tough, but hitting three at once should help. And having them blinded didn't hurt any either! How do you dodge a bomb when you can't see? As he grabbed a third bomb he glanced at the table to the right. He really wanted to lob something that way, but with Puppy in the middle of the fight he didn't dare. He'd have to hope the bird man was a good shot.

So instead he readied and threw a third bomb - using the same target as the first - the poor guy in the middle of the left hand table. As always, the goal was to get as much splash damage as possible.

(Future round plans: As long as the fight is in question, Zick will use his bombs. If the blindness stays on the left table, he will look for an opportunity to switch targets to the right, but he is always careful not to hit his teammates. Also, he is a fan of splash damage. So he will do his best to align his targets in such a way that he maximizes his chance for splash. This might mean moving left or right to line them up a bit. If there is a target that is alone (no splash possible) and not blinded, he will instead use a tanglefoot bag. Plenty of options, I hope that is clear.)

Subject: Distance

For the GM:

About how far is Zick from the group at the right hand table? Can he reach it with a throw?

Also, has Puppy closed for melee with them? I don't want to get one of my own guys with splash.

To the group: I will probably have Zick toss another bomb or two - he gets 7 per day, I think. I'm hoping this isn't just the first of several big fights. Then it kinda depends on where things are at. Right now the left hand table is reasonably contained. (Although it is worth noting that the middle guy has taken 25 points of damage and is not dead yet, so they are not weaklings.) Zick could probably hit all three on the left again with a bomb if the other three all focus on the right hand group - especially mister invisibility. I have no idea what the power mentioned was, but I hope it works. (The questions above are to see if his switching to a right-hand target is even feasible.)

Subject: A shower of Arrows

Trossach was happy to see a couple of arrows find their mark in the zombies. He wasn't sure that they were as effective as he would have hoped, but they did seem to do something. At least some of the earlier zombies had been felled by arrows, so it was something. He wanted to keep his eye on the overall battle - were the fallen elves rising? Were the slow moving zombies going anywhere in particular?

But there was a fight to be had and his first target would be the sprinters. They had the speed to be a danger to his friends, and potentially even to him. Since the first one was down already, he moved on to the other. It had wanted to feast on the elf, but now seemed to be targeting his new friends. That couldn't be allowed. So he drew his bow and aimed and the runner.

(OOC: As noted in the Q&A thread, he will stay on the Dune unless circumstances require him to move. (An ally needs saving and arrows wont do it, zombies come to him.) he will target in order over the next few rounds: 1. Sprinter zombies - currently standing or if dead elves arise. 2. Any zombie headed up the Dune at him. 3. Any zombie seriously threatening group members. 4. other zombies. However, if it looks like his allies have something under control he will move his fire to others.

Yes, please do so.
The key is that Zick wants max splash effect, so if they have moved he would adjust his target to give him the best chance at splash. He would keep his target in the group on the left regardless as that is where he is.

Subject: A solid start

Zick grunted with satisfaction as his bomb struck true. He really loved that bow. The others had had some success as well, although he couldn't tell if Angel had accomplished anything. But clearly she had tried. And she was a target, hopefully the Pup could protect her. He wasn't really in a position to do so yet.

But he could try to finish off the group on the left. He badly wanted to reload the bow and shoot again, but the one drawback of a crossbow design was the amount of time it took to reload. So instead he would just use his own arm. He was a pretty good shot - and even more so with the mutagen raging through his system. He wanted to aim at the middle guy again, but he was down thanks to whatever it was Puppy had been up to. He wanted to maximize the bombs ability to splash - since he had moved a little to the left already he aimed at the one to the left - hopefully the other two at that table were a bit behind the guy to be hit by the splash. Certainly the one on the ground should be within splash distance, and with any luck maybe two . . . Gotta love a good bomb.

So Zick quickly triggered the bomb agents and threw his bomb at his target. He stayed just inside the tree line hoping it would give him a bit of cover.

(Zick is aiming at the left most bandit - I believe it is the one with the rapier. If I am wrong and the other one standing would give him a better shot at splash damage he will aim there. He is throwing the bomb.

Thrown bomb: +5 hit (dexterity at 21, +2 3rd lvl, -2 for distance thrown)- Bomb 2d6+4 damage, plus splash damage to all within 5 feet - 6 points, save for half.
Also, his AC goes up to 18 with the improved dexterity.)

I really didn't mean to miss the fight. I just didn't know we had made a decision. But then, it doesn't really look like "we" did. This could end up being a very interesting group. Anyway, Trossach is in the fight - but from a distance while possible.

Subject: Sorry i was slow

(I was going to have Trossach join the attack, but kept waiting to see if we figured out what we were doing first. Guess I missed the first round. He wouldn't hold back if the others join in.)

Trossach was surprised to see the others run down the dune at the zombies. He hadn't realized a decision had been made. And most of all, having seen the exploding zombies, he had no desire at all to get close to them.

But he also had no intention of sitting back while his companions fought alone. That wasn't how he did things. He grabbed his bow and nocked an arrow. He would let fly at the sprinting zombies, they seemed to be the fastest moving and thus the biggest danger. He also tried to keep an eye on the elf that had just recently fallen. Would it rise to join the undead?

So unless someone hit with wisdom loss either needs a specific type of saving throw, or they get all the way to zero (which would take awhile even for an "average" wisdom of 9) it really has no direct impact on things? Ok. Just curious as I've never had a character that could use things like that web.

Ok - a range question. Thrown items have a range of 20 feet, which seems absurdly low to me since home plate is 60'6" from the pitchers mound, and even high school kids manage to get it there without any problems. While I know chucking a bomb isn't the same as a baseball, still, I'm wondering about the distance. In these rules - is 20' just the distance before penalty? or what? Sorry, I should probably look this up instead of asking. But it determines if Zick takes the time to reload his splashbow or simply chucks the next bomb.

Subject: Fighting from a distance

Q for the DM: How slowly are the bad guys moving? Most of the time zombies are pretty slow. Are these guys slow? In some cases staying at a distance to fight and still being able to run away if needed might be a real option. Are they that slow? likewise, are they slow enough that the remaining elves could run away?

As for the questions about travel - I would think someone should map. Who has the best skills for that? Having someone keep an eye out for food seems like a good choice given the nature of survival days. Ochit seems the logical choice for this I would think. Unless someone else has skills I'm not aware of. Trossach would likely be keeping an eye out for threats.

1. What exactly is the implication of "wisdom damage." What does it actually do in combat?
2. How far away from the bad guys is Zick? And are the distances different for the two tables since he moved a bit too the left to attack that table.
3. How are you handling the combat initiative? You asked for Lara's moves - does that mean she is the next to act and should post first, then you'll give a result, then you will move on to the next to act? This would mean the rest of us wait to post until after Lara does so. Or do we all just post and you'll give the results in the proper order? I'm not quite sure when to post.
