Subject: From the back

From the back of the group, Corban heard Brutal curse, the trap door slam and shouting in German. Brutal cursing was normal, but it took on a different tone when he was falling through a trap door.

There were people between him and the trap, so Corban couldn't jump to Brutal's aid right away. What he could do was prepare for his role as team sharp-shooter.

If space allows he will see if he can line up a shot on the door at the end of the hall. (Does he have any inclination if the German voices are coming from down the pit or behind the door?)

If he can't see much through the rest of his team, he will instead move to the wall and try to keep guard on the rear - meaning both back up the stairs and down into the water. Noise could be a bad thing.

Either way he is listening carefully both for commands from the officers and better location information on the Germans.

An update! Exciting! With the news tempered by hearing that the boss man has health issues.

Take care of your health, we will be here. Andnow to figure out a post - kinda hard since the sniper would pretty much follow orders while looking for anythingweird that might come at him!

Best of luck on your health.

Subject: One way to go

As the group raced towards and then down the stairs, McGuiness had all he could do to not fall down the stairs laughing. He'd seen Brutal blast the suit of armor - the same suit that he had been staring at ever since the Gargoyles had been defeated. Way to go Brutal! He hadn't envisioned himself sharing thoughts with the muscle very often, but on this one they were of one mind. Maybe Brutal was more clever than he looked after all.

Smirking a bit at the chunks of armor smoking on the ground as he provided a rear guard as the group descended, McGuiness tried to make sure that none of the tentacles followed them down.

Once the dust settled and the group moved down, he simply did his job - watch carefully for anything that might come alive and kill them. When they heard the shots, Corban's first thought was of the prisoner. Who else would be shooting here? Well, besides anyone lucky enough to still be alive and desiring to stay that way. Was running towards gunfire the same things as running towards monsters?

Who knew? The only truth at the moment was that all the truths they thought they knew about the world had been turned upside down, and they clearly did not understand the truths of this new world they found themselves in.

Such contorted thoughts just made him snort - quietly. They weren't much use. One truth he did know was that survival seemed most likely in a group. So he was prepared to follow orders. Hopefully the captain would prove wise.

Subject: Tentacles . . . again

Corban listened with one ear as the scientist described the experiments in the castle. His attention was focused on watching everything else going on around them. His eyes were consistently drawn back to the suit of armor. Given everything he had seen so far, it almost seemed odd that the armor had NOT come to life. Yet. It hadn't come to life "yet" he reminded himself as he continued to scan the area.

"Fire and iron" the lady had said. Or was it "fire and steel?" Their bullets seemed effective, if not as effective as they would be on normal creatures. But these things could be killed. Corban hoped they wouldn't end up needing to take the sword from the knight and fight with weapons like that. He was good with a gun, not a sword.

When the scientist screamed and ran out of the room, Corban was torn between disgust for his panic and sympathy for the terror that drove him to panic. What would it have been like hiding in this place alone for hours and hours?

Hiding must have been better than the end the man received. The sniper's gun was coming up when the order to "hold fire" came. Smart. It was a good order, if completely against instinct. Smart.

When the captain asked the lady about the generators, Corban smiled. Something about the story had been ticking away in the back of his head but he couldn't quite make it come out, until the captain had spoken it for him. Power, that had been a key part of the story. Find the generators. He was beginning to like the officers here. Even with the insanity into which they had stepped, they were making good decisions. He liked that. His life depended on that.

And so did the life of the prisoner. Corban did not want to leave that man here. He wondered which one it was as his eyes continued to sweep the room and the entrances.

Subject: I'm not out

I haven't even read all of the last 5-6 posts yet, but saw a couple of them. Yes, my real life has had some real serious shocks lately. But in all honesty - it almost makes the games more important. I need an escape from reality, which these games provide. So, what does it mean for my posting? I'm not sure. That is why I posted the news. I might have some times when I simply don't have time to post. But so far I think I have kept up with it. I doubt I would miss very frequently, but I might sometimes. Of course, things could go splat on me also, I just don't know. But I think I could post the vast majority of time. Probably. So I'd love to see the game continue. Or, if needed, I could take on a role in a new game. Or, since there are unpredictable variables, I could sit out. But i'd hate to have a game cancelled in part because of me, especially when so far i have been able to keep up.

Subject: Real life kicks hard

Real life has decided to kick real hard. Real hard. My wife was just diagnosed with ALS, Lou Gerhigs disease. I truly don't even know what to do.

My life has been turned upside down in the last couple of weeks making games a bit less significant and timely. I don't want to quit my games and the Inn. To be frank, they represent a badly needed break from reality. Suddenly gargoyles and giant tentacled monsters seem almost pleasant. However, there may well be times when I simply don't get around to games. I simply ask for your understanding with this. I have absolutely no problem with Corban getting run as an NPC if I occaisonally am slow. In fact, I'd prefer that to having the game bog down. The games are more fun (and distracting) when they keep moving.

So go get those bad boys! I'll be there when I can.

Subject: Guard duty to medic to guard duty

Corban looked at Doc's wounds until the woman came up and took over the operation. He was fine with that. He could do some medical work if needed, but was far more comfortable with a riflew than a medical needle.

After the Doc was temporarily patched up the group moved back into the big room again. The sniper thought about leaving behind his signature card to mark his kills, for certainly he had helped take out some of the gargoyles. But he didn't drop any. He doubted they would know what it meant, but he didn't think he wanted whatever was here to know he had been here. There was still a job to do, but it just didn't seem like the time to sign your name to it. So he didn't.

As they moved back into the big hall where the attack had begun, the sniper took up a position near the entrance they came in and, placing his back to a wall, stood guard. In particular, he kept his eye on the suit of armor. it wouldn't be the first time something in this place that was not supposed to move got up and walked. Or flew. Or just existed.

When the German scientists (or so he assumed at a glance) came running and shouting down the stairs the sniper barely flinched. One eye flickered over, but seeing one panicked man come tumbling down the stairs, he allowed his teammates to deal with that situation. He didn't know but a few words in German anyway. Corban continued to stand guard. He watched the armor very carefully, but also spared an occaisonal glance at all of the other entrances - even the one behind them. While the others were preoccupied with the Doctor, it was his job to make sure nothing else snuck up on them.

"Heironymus"

The cleric heard his name being spoken quietlya nd quickly roused from a deep slumber. Trips in the wild quickly taught one how to sleep deeply quickly - and how to wake equally as quickly. At least it felt quick to the cleric.

Raina was speaking his name. Upon waking he looked around and quickly spotted the cleric. Raina's nod in that direction helped as well. He didn't know what was going on.

The two exchanged quizzical looks and slowly approached Quarlin. Was it better to speak or get a look first? He didn't know? So the two of them approached from opposite sides - trying to keep some distance while getting a front view - incase he Quarlin did something in his haze.

The slowly approached and looked . . .

(I'm assuming the action here because it seems fairly obvious, at least to me. Feel free to change it if needed.)

Subject: Medic? Did someone call for a medic?

As Brutal helped the Doc, Corban held his usual sniper's position - being on the lookout in case some other part of the castle came alive to attack them. He watched the courtyard from which they had originally entered, scanning everything as quickly and thoroughly as he could. Hs heart was racing, but his fingers were firm on the trigger - the trembling would come later.

When Brutal called for medical help Corban risked a look away from his guard duties to see if anyone else was responding. Seeing nobody else jumping to Doc's aid, the sniper muttered, "S***!"

Kneeling down beside Doc and Brutal he started he took a closer look at the wound. As he did so he said, "someone take my guard. I'm not Doc, but I've done a bit of emergency work before. Let me get a closer look Brutal."

Looking closer he quickly adds, "good start stopping the bleeding. Excellent . . . Ok, Doc? You with me at all Doc? I could use any help you can give. You got some stuff in the wound, so we are going to have to clean it out a bit. If we can do that, we can bind it up. I'd really hate to have to do stitches out here. I'm going to clean what I can Doc. i'm going to need your kit."

Looking around quickly he adds, "Someone look in Doc's kit for his medical gear. I need something to clean some gargoyle pieces out of the wound - a tweezer or something. See if there is sometype of cleaner or alcohol as well. Bandages, maybe?"

(I'm not a medical expert myself, so i'm guessing here - and acting based on the "medical expertise" in the character description.)

I can honestly say I don't know what Corban has on him. I'll try and go back and look. He'd have one of the two sets of equipment, plus his sniper rifle, which I assume isn't standard. Plus he got a machine gun from a dead German, I think. And I know he wanted and asked for one of the bayonet/machettes.

Subject: I'm trapped in a movie!

As the statues came to life above them, Corban couldn't help but think that he was in the middle of one of the monster flicks that were so popular back home. This couldn't be real!

But that thought didn't have more than a moment before it was pushed aside by more serious thoughts of a very real need to survive. "Fire and cold iron." his mind had been puzzeling over it even as they walked into the room. It was like a riddle. What they had were guns. What he had was his trusty rifle. If they didn't work, what would? And then, quite literally, hell broke loose in the world.

Brutal and the Doc dove to a wall and started blasting. The sniper appreciated the idea of getting his back to a wall - and the use of the tunnel as a funnel sounded genius, assuming, of course, that they had some way to kill these beasts. If guns worked, Brutal and the Doc were putting on a good show!

The sniper snapped his rifle up and backed towards the tunnel. He paused for a moment to see if the rapid shots of his squad mates were having any effect. He was sighting carefully, leaving the front two gargoyles to the Doc and Brutal he picked the third closest and lined up his sites to hit the beast right in one of its stony eyes. If the other shots had an impact, he pulled the trigger a couple of times.

But his mind kept going over "fire and cold iron." Was there anything to burn in the room besides the big chairs?

Subject: The Doors

Quarlin was not the only one who wanted a closer look at the doors. Heironymus moved over to the doors as well. As he stared at the patterns looking for some sort of symbol he recognized, words began to emerge.

Each door bore a message. The one on the left said "Path of Faith." The one in the middle, "Path of Strength" and the one to the right, "Path of Power." After pondering these words for a minute, the cleric turned to the others in the group and told them what he had seen. He wanted to know what they thought about the doors - especially Quarlin, who had also been staring at the weird symbols.

"well, we rest first. That will help a great deal. But after that we will need to make a choice. I lean towards the "Path of Faith," both as a cleric and becuase we are searching for a cult. We aren't near where that group is supposed to be located yet, are we?"

Heironymus looked around the room they found themselves in. He wan't very fond of being led blind through the dark. If something did happen, his eyes would be as shocked by suddenly bringing in light as any opponents would be. But some things couldn't be helped.

"Well, if we can't lock the doors, at the least we can put some loud stuff by the doors as a form of alarm. It is better than nothing. The pit is interesting, however."

Looking around a bit he added, "For setting watch we also have a light issue - some of us will need light to be effective as guards, unless we trust completely to our ears, which I don't."

Heironymus also takes some time to examine the doors - in particular he is looking to see if he recognizes any of the symbols engraved there.

Subject: A hunting tentacles we will go1

Corban wasn't surprised to hear the Sarge insist that they fight these things. He expected it. But somehow Brutals comments did catch him off guard. He never doubted the group Tough would talk about fighting them, but somehow Brutal "acting tough" and Brutal "doing the right thing to save others" just didn't seem to go together. Was it a coincidence, he wondered? It just so happened that acting tough in this setting also meant playing the role of the selfless hero? Or was their more to their gun-toting, cigar-smoking point-man?

Doc's words were no surprise at all. Some people you just knew you could count on.

Corban smiled a bit as he scanned the space around the group. He had listened to the ladies speech while keeping his eyes open on everything around them. It was the role of the sniper to be the groups eyes.

After the Sarge had snapped and Brutal played his slefless-hero card, Croban couldn't spoke briefly. It wasn't usually his place to speak up, but when tentacles start waving, perhaps the old rules start losing a bit of their meaning.

"I don't think the lady meant "run away from the mission." She just mean, "get the hell out of the reach of the beast." At least that's how I'd read it - and it worked once so far."

Turnign to the lady he asked a question. "Was that fire and cold steel? Otr was it iron? What does that mean? Is a bullet hot or cold? Will bullets do anything? Did the grenade work because it was fire? We picked up a few blades on the way here, are those really what we have to fight giant tentacles with?"

If nobody offers a good piece of wood to burn, Heironymus will use his light spell, which he can get back more easily than a sunrod can be replaced.

Once light is acquired the march is on. "Anyone offering to go first? I might suggest someone who wants to be in front of the light spell and has better night vision than mine. Otherwise, my armor can lead the way. Hopefully we can find a resting spot inside."

And Corban ran. He didn't normally like the thought of running from something. It was hard to aim a rifle and run at the same time. But in this case, he needed no encouragement. He ran with everything he had. Even so, he did not run fast enough, as one of the tentacles grabbed him around the ankle and pulled him off his feet and up into the air.

Damn! He attempted to twist in mid air to get a shot at the tentacle holding him, but before he could do more than spin around (or be spun, he couldn't really tell how much was his own doing) he heard rapid fire shots and the tentacle released him. Instead of spinning he now found himself falling, and the corpral did his best to turn his motion into a duck and roll. It worked. Sort of.

A bit bruised, the sniper rolled quickly to his feet and spun to assist the others who had just saved his butt. He turned just in time to see two grenades go down the chasm. He knew enough about grenades to turn and continue moving quickly into the castle at that point, putting as much space as possible between himself and the explosion. And the monster as well.

As he moved into the courtyard, Corban stopped and surveyed the landscape. Ruin. Bloodshed. Battle. What the? But he took all of that in at a moments glance. He knew his job was to be the lookout. He quickly scanned the upper reaches of the castle in the courtyard. Was there any sign of life or movement in the windows, along the roof line or anywhere else?

Seeing nothing, he followed the captains orders to move forward. As he approached the captain, he kept his eyes constantly scanning the scene for some sign of a threat. But as he passed the groups senior officer, he asked, "uh, captain. Did the brass maybe forget to tell us something?"

It wasn't an accusation, just an honest question from a kid from the woods who had just seen things he had never seen in the woods back home. His eyes kept scanning their surroundings, looking for the next bizarre threat.

"Don't you think we should rest first? Then....we can scout out the nearest cave for shelter and to determine if the caves are connected by a tunnel network. That would circumvent some of the climbing that apparently needs to be done. Besides we don't need any of our heaviest team members precariously hugging the side of a mountain. Someone light and fleet of foot to do the scouting."

The cleric looked at the other climber. "I'm not comfortable resting until we know the ledge is safe. It doesn't look like a big search. As for who goes out on the ledges, I'd love to leave that for those less encumbered, but after what we just went through I'm not real comfortable volunteering someone else.
