Subject: An end to the wyverns

"Wow. Nice jump"

It was about all Heironymus could come up with to say after the Rogue's daring leap. It was clearly inadequate.

"Hmmm . . . no healing spells. Before we do much else, I'd suggest we start by looking around this shelf and the extra edges."

So saying, the cleric followed his own advice, carefully examining the back wall of the ledge on which they were perched. After that, if the others hadn't already done so, he will move down the right hand ledge (facing the rock wall, away from the ledge.)

So, did Corban ever cross the bridge? I wasn't sure he had, but the map places him with everyone else.

Ok, so that was lucky. Thank goodness for all that time spent throwing lassos at uncle Bob's lizard farm . . .

Question - is the wyvern poison going to be out of the system after a couple of turns or do we need to worry about an on going problem?

As for the group - do we need some healing spells? I suspect we should take care of that first, then inspect the shelf we are on, followed by moving along in one direction or another.

Corban saw the darkness shift under the bridge and too one step forward for a better look.

Suddenly two huge tentacles shot out from under the bridge and came rapidly towards the sniper. "SH#@!!!!" he mettered as he hastily beat a retreat. His first move was straight backwards as he sought to put as much space between himself and the bridge as possible. He ran straight away from the chasm, swerving slightly to use the guardhouse as a bit of a block as he ran.

The first twenty steps he simply ran as fast as he could. After that he will peer back over his shoulder and see what has occurred behind him. If the tentacles have stopped their hunt he will spin, bring up his rifle and see what he can do to aid in the fight.

Heironymus had approached the cliffs edge unsure what to do,but as he saw the wyvern's barb strike home and the rogue begin to curse, hequickly realized that the time for inaction was over. He needed to do something and do it quickly.

The goal was obvious - get the flying wyrm back over the ledge so that their companion could let go and land in safety. Simple, right? That meant finding some way to either pull or entice it over. He had the rope in his hands - he quickly made sure there was a loop in the end and attempted to lasso the beasts head. If it worked, he could use his entire armor clad weight to pull it in - hopefully without creating too much of a jerk on the beast.

As he prepared to lasso the beast he smiled, remember his childhood at his uncles lizard farm when he had spent endless summer days with his cousins lassoing the flying beasts. Who knew those skills would come in so handy? Surely the gods would remember those days. (Right? Right? I'msure I put that into my character's history. )

Corban saw the captain's gesture and assumed it must mean, "move out."

Ok, he thought, time to storm the castle. It was mighty nice of them to leave the door open for us. At least I hope it was nice.

Keeping his usual running commentary going, the sniper lined his sites up on the opening beyond the bridge as Brutal moved quickly too and across the bridge.

(Assuming he makes it across safely)

Once Brutal was across and stationed to the side of the entrance the other started moving forward as well. As they moved out from the guardhouse, Corban nodded at the lady and said quietly, "lets move out - quick to the guardhouse." With that he moved out. Although he kept his head down and ran in a crouch, the sniper did not make the slow advance his comrades had. Instead he sprinted to the shelter of the guardhouse his companions had vacated.

Once there, he will again do his best to use the concealment of the building and put his scope to good use. He will offer cover to the others on the bridge or on the other side from where he is at. He will also use his scope to look into the entrance tunnel and at any nearby windows to again try and get information. He will hold this position until signalled to join the others on the other side of the bridge.

*As he approaches the guardhouse, Corban will also try to get a look at the tracks in the road. Are there tracks?

Well, I don't know if it is a good plan, but it is the only one I can think of at the moment. So unless someone else has a better idea, Heironymus will attempt to lasso the wyvern. We can't leave her dangling AND getting attacked. Perhaps as H tosses the rope someone else could try to tie it off. Assuming we want it tied down near us.

Anybody know what wyvern poison does? Other than hurt, I mean.

Ok, so Heironymus goes to the edge with some vague plan of using the rope to save the flying rogue. How far out from the ledge is the wyvern? How hard does it look to get a rope over its head? (I think the rope is tied to something, but need to check) Does it look like one good yank might pull it over the ledge? Is there any way to get a rope around the rogue?

Subject: Huh, I guess we didn't plan for THAT!

Heironymus climbed over the edge of the cliff. He was in pain from poison in his blood, at least he assumed that is what it was. As he worked his way over the edge he thanked the half-orc for the assistance. He wouldn't have made it without that help.

As rapidly as he could after reaching level ground he rolled over and climbed to his feet. And that was when he saw the rogue. He saw her grabbed and begin to get carried away. As she lunged for the claw that had recently held her, he had to close his mouth to keep from staring open-mouthed at the deadly scene in front of him. Dangling from a wyvern, no, they certainly hadn't planned for that!

But he didn't sit still to watch what happened next. He saw the other two aiming weapons at the second, unencumbered, wyvern so the cleric quickly made the decision to focus on their dangling friend. There wasn't a lot he could do as killing the beast would be a bad plan at this point. Instead he grabbed the rope the half-orc had discarded and moved to the edge of the cliff. He quickly tied a loop in the end - something that could either make a lasso or an easy handhold.

He didn't have anything in particular in mind, he simply hoped there might be a chance to give his companion something other than the wyrm to hold onto. If the thing came close (It seems it isn't far away, correct?) he could try to lasso it and pull it back over the ledge. At any rate, if the thing tried to move away he would try to loop the rope over its head. Or toss it to his companion in the unlikely event that she dropped her sword.

He watched her carefully to see if she gave any hint of a plan.

Subject: Seeing the world from a distance

From the actions of the group at the guardhouses, it seemed obvious to the sniper that they were deserted. That was odd. Who put up guardhouses and then didn't use them? Something was wrong here. As far as the private knew, they were the only group of Allies in the area. But then, who told a private anything? Who knew - maybe the Russians were around?

Such speculations always ran through his head as he peered through his scope. For now, he would sit and watch as he had been ordered. He suspected that they would soon be making a break for the bridge before the sun rose, at least that is what he would do, but it wasn't his decision to make. If the captain turned to look at him, he would try to indicate that he could see nothing in the castle.

So he sat back and waited for the captain to order them ahead. He and the lady would move forward when called for. And when he did, he intended to take a look at the tracks in the road. There just might be something there.

Corban watched the guard house carefully as Brutal approached. The bent gun in the road was a mystery - guns didn't naturally end up that way. He hoped Brutal had the sense not to tread on any tracks in the road. If something strange had happened, well, critters in the back-woods always left some sign of their passing. He suspected Nazis might do the same in the middle of a road.

"Come on Brutal, don't mess it up!" he thought to himself. This was quickly followed by "I wonder what Nazi scat looks like?"

Despite his wondering thoughts, he was focused on the world through his scope. He watched for any sign of movement - in the guardhouse or up the road towards the castle.

Heironymus climbed as quickly as he could, both thankful for and cursing his heavy armor at the same time.

As he climbed he felt the rush of wind as one of the wyverns dived on him. Just he thought he might escape the pass without damage he felt a dagger dig into his side. Burn! Buffeted by the wings, burned by some poison, the cleric was buffeted into and then away from the cliff. Desperately he reached out for the dangling rope and grabbed it with all of his strength.

His hand closed around the life-saving rope and the cleric was pulled back into the rock with a gasp at the pain in his side.

But he didn't wait. As soon as he had even a shallow breath he continued his climb, using the rope to aid him move as quickly as the burn in his side and the steep cliffside would allow.

"Stupid mysteries!
Stupid secrets!
Stupid unknown mission!
Stupid Wyverns!"

It ran like a mantra through his mind as Heironymus climbed. He simply kept putting one hand and in front of the other and pulling himself upwards as the mantra ran through his head. He ignored the wyrm in the sky. There was nothing he could do anyway. Climb. Climb. Hand hold. Hand hold. Climb. Climb.

"Stupid mysteries!
Stupid secrets!
Stupid mission!
Stupid Wyverns!"

I really don'tknowmuch about the firearms being mentioned. Just saying Schmeisser means nothing to me.

However, I think a sniper is pretty clear. As long as he has his rifle, I doubt Corban would carry around a second rifle if he didn't have to do so. Assuming he had ample ammo, anyway.

Subject: Scoping things out

McGuiness jumped out of the car as soon as he got the chance. He immediately found a spot where he could find cover and yet see the guard houses. He used the scope on his sniper rifle to "scope out" the scene. If anything showed, of course, he would let the others know. While Brutal parked the car he also took the opportunity to scope out the castle a little. There were a few lights on . . .perhaps someone would show themselves in one of the windows?

He was beginning to like the captain. Corban could see that the others were testing the captain. Subtly, but it was there. You don't just forget about rank in the army. But the captain was in charge - but didn't pick fights over the little things. It would have worried Corban more if the captain had felt he needed to prove himself. This trip would need someone with real confidence, not just a puffed up chest. Somehow that thought brought an image of Brutal . . . Still, although the group was a lot smalled than expected, they did have a some core skills. The Sarge was a man of action, and could speak the language. Doc, well he was a Doc. And seemed pretty steady. Brutal, for all that he was indeed a bit brutal, provided some muscle. And Corban himself? Well, he could shoot. He brought his own set of skills.

These thoughts wandered through the snipers mind as hecovered the group as they moved towards the guard houses.

***Corban will claim one of the torches (as well as a stinky cheese sandwhich.) He also suggest that any extra guns and ammo at least be put in the trunk of the car for future use, if not being carried. He will also claim a bayonet if those of higher rank do not do so.

Well, I think Gronz would want to do whatever increases his chances of survival - which may well be not taking onthe wyverns by himself. So you can choose either, I think.

Also, I don't think the climbers need to be "pulled up" - we need a stable rope to help us climb faster. One person may well be able to do that. Or perhaps there is something to quickly tie the rope to? I don't remember the description - and it might not be worth the time to look. One person distracting the beasties might not be a bad idea.

Here. The sniper would just really like the higher ranking characters to comment on his suggestion before he takes charge.

Heironymus was a fan of armor. Most of the time. This would be one of those other times. Unless, of course, it proved effective against wyvern claws, then he'd like it again.

While he pondered the effect of armor, he continued to climb, keeping an eye out for the rope from above. He'd let the wizard use the aid to go up first, but would be very happy to make use of it as quickly as he could. In the mean time, he climbed.

When he got to the top his best choice would probably be his crossbow.

Well, the private's first thought is that privates don't make the plans. So Corban will follow orders. However, in true sniper style he would typically pull over and use the scope to scout things out quietly before driving or walking up. But he would also prefer to approach while it was dark wasn't the sun comingup in an hour?

If the group doesn't want the sniper to spy, I would vote for driving up. Walking up just "looks wrong." At that point there is no chance of bluffing, and considering the bridge and castle walls - very little chance of going in unseen. So if we assume we are to be seen, having a chance to bluff it might be best. But we better have a pre-approved plan on how to react to guards at the gate house or at the castle entrance.

I love the site.

I like the format for the games - it works well for my life style. I also really like the writing that can go into it.

I also freely admit that I might be a bit older than a lot of the kids demanding instant gratification. I don't know, is 39 old for this site? I've wondered that for awhile.

Keeping games alive is critical. This is a bit of Catch-22. Games that die will chase people away. But games die unless people stay. I don't know what you do to keep people, but I do know that another game down the tubes could reach my breaking point. I sure hope you figure this one out as I'd love to have a game truly survive and become long-term.

“Tie that rope around my waist, and between the half orc and myself, we’ll get you guys to the top without as much risk.”

"I don't think you want to be tied to me. I'm bigger than you. If I fall, you will also. Climb quickly and then help us up when you are secure."

For some strange reason the cleric did not understand, an image of a mask dropping down in front of him as he and many other people sat tightly packed together inside of a large metal hallway with little windows came to mind. The image made no sense, nor did the strange voice saying,"always put your own mask on first, only then assisting others." It was a strange vision, but a quick shake of his head cleared his mind as he continued to climb.

"Climb quickly." So saying, the cleric continued up the cliff himself. He was more than willing to accept help, but did not want to put others at greater risk. The ledge above was their greatest hope, buthe kept his eyes out for something closer. The cliff had been riddled with ledges and caves - if he could find some place to brace his feet he might be able to make a small stand and provide some cover for the others with a spell or crossbow bolt. But if it wasn't at least moderately secure, he'd be better off continuing the climb.

Ok, I haven't spent a lot of time with clerical spells - so a quick question. Given that Heironymus is climbing a cliff (my impression was that it wasn't easy, but also wasn't terribly hard either - just a long climb, it seems a bit doubtful that the cleric could cast a spell while climbing? Is it possible?

The spell I am thinking of is "obscuring mist" - it might make climbing a touch harder - but we could still see the cliff in front of us, but the birds or whatever they are could not see us to attack. At least not until we climb to the ledge where their nest is located. (a guess) I won't do it yet, but I am curious about the answer. I am also assuming a mist would not make climbing any harder given the recent weather.

Do we have an idea of size for these things?
