Subject: When did this excape become a battle?

Heironymus accepted the offered sword and moved quickly towards Ele. As he did so he said quickly, "This guard is only knocked out. Someone shackle him with the chains. (Assuming two clamps linked by a chain.) One band on his sword arm, the other on the opposite leg. No need to kill him, but we don't want him awake."

"Is there no otehr way out of this place?!"

Heironymus moves quickly to Ele. He quickly reviews her wounds and decides to cast a healing spell. (Assuming the wound doesn't look bad enough for a level 2 healing spell.) he prepares to quickly cast cure light wounds.

As he works he determines to follow that up with spiritual weapon. (Assuming this creates a weapon that fights on its own - he does not have to weild it himself, correct?)

Subject: Time

Hieronymus looks around for an object to swing at the guard. He knew he was moving as fast as he could, yet somehow whenever he got into these life and death situations, which happened more frequently than his mother would like, it felt as if time was standing still. Had he been preparing to smack the guard for weeks now? Or did it just feel that way?

But the strange sense of time slowed down allowed him to scan for a weapon. If none showed, he would use what the gods had given him at birth.

Subject: Stupid, Stupid Guards!

Heironymus watched the melee develop. It was time to contribute. He grabs the nearest decent sized object he can find and attempts to smack the guard in the back of the head with it. At the very least he hopes to disrupt the guards knife attack. It might even knowck him out.

(If there is no weapon, he will attempt to take out the guard at the knees. He is trying to kick/break his knee and knock him to the ground.)

As he hears a commotion in the next room Heironymus also realizes that the time for silence has probably passed. If a group of guards rushes into the room he will target them with a sound burst spell. Unfortunately it is a loud spell, but it is also one of the only things he can offer against a group. But it will be important that he not catch any of the prisoners in the spell.

(I believe H was linked to Ele, correct?)

Seeing that his chain mate had the same idea he did, Heironymus immediately slipped out of the irons, freeing them for his partner to use as a weapon. Since the others now had the weapons, Hieronymus attempted to move quickly around behind the guard. (Not the guard the half-orc was engaging.) While moving he would keep his eyes out for anything to use as a weapon. As soon as possible he would attempt to attack from behind - he is looking for either a knockout blow - or a chance to tackle and pin the guard.

Subject: So much for the subtle way

Heironymus had already considered his spells - there was nothing of immediate help unless he wanted to create quite racket. But if things went poorly, he might have options.

(The prisoners are bound together by the fake irons. Is it possible to use those as a weapon? H would slip off the irons and, assuming his chain mate did the same, use them as a weapon to swing at the guard. His hope is that if he holds the front with a weapon of sorts, that others could move around behind the guard and tackle/hit him.)

As he stood waiting for the irons to be put on and the great escape to begin, Heironymus stood quietly. Surely soon there would be some action. Perhaps the fisticuffs that had been suggested? A nice simple escape would be much better. Was there something the half-orc was waiting for? Why the delay in things?

heironymus could only wait. Things were out of his hands at this point.

Subject: Up to us?!

Heironymus was a bit worried about the turn this "escape" had taken. Be quiet and follow had been the orders, but now it was "up to us?" Was there a plan or not?

For lack of a better plan, he was prepared to follow the half-orcs lead, but to where? "Lead on, if you have a plan."

If there is no plan the half-orc leads them to he does have a couple of questions or offerings. Being a cleric, Heironymus would presumably have access to his spells. Sadly, not many are of great use. He should have:

Obscuring Mist - If an escape under cover is helpful
Shield - Could at least give himself some cover. Does this move with him?
Spiritual Weapon - The weapon will wield itself and fight - if, of course, we had a weapon.
Sound Blast - Lound noise that can stun. Could be great, but would also make a lot of noise. When we came in - or the half-orc - did we notice what is beyond the guard room? One room and freedom? What is outside? Who else would hear the noise?

Heironymus does NOT want to kill the guards. Currently he is guilty of no crime. Murder is a nasty crime, especially of an underling. Sneaking or stunning is the way to go.

I'm guessing the manacles include the idea of the half-orc walking us out looking as if we are chained up. Can they be put on but not locked? Would it look real?

Subject: The Great Escape

Well, that worked, Heironymus thought. Out of one frying pan anyway . . . It seemed the guard knew their rescuer, that was an interesting bit of information. Still, he saw no reason why they would have orchestrated that little bit of theater at the door, so it seemed that the guards outside the jail hallway were not "in on it" anyway.

He just wished he knew what "it" was. Who was helping them and why? nothing was straight forward about this whole situation.

Speed and silence. He could do that. But there was still a guard, at least one, on the other side of the door. How were they going to get out. He really did not want to kill guards who were only doing their duty. Not that he had anything to kill someone with at the moment anyway.

Heironymus prepared to follow their rescuer. Once again, the next step seemed to be out of his hands.

Subject: Escape!

Heironymus was very uncomfortable with the attempted escape. It wasn't that he believed that justive would always prevail or that all laws were just, but rather that he had very little faith in the motive of others at the moment. "prisoners killed while trying to escape" was a classic headline in the press of oppressors.

Still, it was only the work of a moment to decide to make a break for it. After several days, it was clear that sitting and waiting was not likely to work. So escape it was.

He wished the half-orc would share some information, but assumed he was correct - now was the time for speed and stealth, not talk.

*snik* the door to the cell came unlocked.
"Can you take care of all four yourself?" - as the door at the end of the hall opened.

Looking meaningfully at his cellmate and those in the hallway, Heironymus quickly and quietly pulled the door to the cell shut while also holding his finger to his lips in the universal sign for silence. Shhhhhh....

(The goal is to be back in the cell and look like nothing is going on. There are several assumptions here:
1. The goal is to get out of sight ASAP. Whatever would do that fastest would be his actual move.
2. I am guessing from the reading that the door to H's cell was not fully open yet. If it was open, he would wave the others into the cell quickly as the easiest way to get them out of sight. Or if everyone was right next to that door and it would be faster for all come in.
3. The other cell door might logically still be open - making a fast place for the others to jump into.
4. H would not pull the door shut if that would lock it. If that is a danger it would remain slightly open - and somethng would be put in it to keep it from being shut.
5. If the others are caught out in the open, the two in the cellmate would presumably (can only speak for H obviously) act like they are still locked in so that they could have some sort of surprise on their side.
6. H would want to work quietly and non-lethally. They have not yet actually committed a crime.

Subject: What to do?

Heironymus looked around his cell. Decisive. He was supposed to be decisive in moments like this. That was the theory. don't sit back and wait for the world to get you, go make things happen.

But what to do? First, he was in a cell. Was there anything he could do from inside a cell? The options seemed limited.

Second, even if he were free, what would he do? He didn't know enough at this point to do anything. Go after Allyn? The captain of the guard? The powerful sorceror? Just run away? He honestly didn't know what the best option might be.

Prior to getting arrested the best course of action had seemed to be waiting and seeing what developed and then reacting. But that might not be an option anymore. So what could he do?

Heironymus decided to start with the obvious. "Ok, we might as well check doors, windows, and walls. Lets see if this place is as solid as it looks," he said quietly. "And we need a plan. What do we do? We know we didn't do anything wrong, in fact, we were wronged," he added for the benefit of anyone listening. "But we are still here? Do we do anything? If we get out, then what?"

(The action: searcing the cells. After that, nothing exciting. Hopefully others comment. Otherwise, perhaps waiting to see what comes next.)

Subject: Why are people in power all the same?

As the events in the prison unfold, Heironymus had all he could do to keep from shaking his head at the stupidity of most leaders. Why did they always seem to blame the innocent? Why did they always seem to think that torture and death were effective tools? Stupid.

Still, he kept his mouth shut because, stupid or not, he had no desire to be tortured. He had seen such behaviour before so it did not scare him, but that was not the same thing as looking forward to it.

After getting tossed into the cell, Hieronymus moved to the door.

(Can we see guards? H would generally assume their conversations can be overheard, but is this obvious? Who is in which cell?)

"Well, this is a nice "thank you." Do you suppose Allyn had us arrested, or is he unaware of what is happening? Since all we did was deliver a message, who in this city do you think benefits from conflict? I wonder how they figure that we were involved?"

"Although I am far from wealthy, the merchant owes Kyara and I some wages. If he is now employing you as well, you at least have income. No doubt we can cover any costs encountered for now. For all that I would like to leave this mystery behind me, yet I feel that we are tied into this mess. We must see it through."

"Let us find some reasonable and friendly accomodations." With that the group, having already left the merchants house (assumption) moved off to attempt to find accomodations and wait for Allyn's summons. When they do find a room, they will have a message sent to the merchant.

"Deception appears to be a part of this game. I would be very skeptical about the contents of that letter, but we are only messengers. Aside from what you have just told us, we have no idea what the message you read contains, but hopefully it will help you get your daughter back."

Bowing a little and moving towards the door, Hieronymus asked about the inn. After hearing the name, he added, "I can't speak for these others about where we will stay. If it is not in that inn, we will send word where we can be found. Do you wish to continue our employment? Again, I can not speak for these two." (Indicating the two elves that had not originally been hired as guards.)

Once the group is outside we will need to talk.
Thoughts from H:
1. H sees no need to spend that kind of money for a room.
2. Are any of us still employed? What about our pay?
3. If he doubts us, is he going to want us to deliver 1,000 gp?
4. Given the hostility of the locals, what do the dark elves want to do?

(Group: I am tending to post whenever I get the chance because I am travelling and taking advantage of opportunities to get on line. It just seems like I post first all the time and am leading the group around - and that is not my intent. Feel free to adjust things if you want. I just might not get back on line for another 7 days. So feel free to change things. I chose to have Heironymus start the discussion because he and Kyara are the ones the merchant knows. The others would likely finish things, since they have the actual message.)

Heironymus reminded himself that this man had lost his daughter (And potentially could make life very hard for them) before he responded.

"Sir., as you can see we did not return with your daughter. But we have seen her - and she is alive." Before the man could interupt with the expected questions, Heironymus hurriedly continued. "But let us tell you the entire story as it unfolded."

Looking towards Kyara he began, "Kyara was able to follow the trail of the brigands for several days. There can be no doubt of the trail. It led us to a cave, which we entered. This is where we found your daughter. After several turns and adventures in the caves, with more illusions making things difficult, we entered a large cavern."

"And there we saw Jocelyn. She was not alone. An elf sat on a throne and held a chain attached to your daughters neck. In addition to the elf, who seems to be a mage of some power, there were at least 12 guards in the room."

"About the time we entered, these two (nodding towards the two dark elves) were brought in by another door. It seemed clear that they had been prisoners. The elf spent several minutes insulting everyone."

At that point Heironymus paused in his oration. He looked at his two new companions. "And now, I think, the rest of the story should be continued by these two."

As the man at the table turns and walks away Heironymus looks at his companions waves towards the door. Walking towards the door (Assuming no one else objects) he comments, "Well, I don't know that we "let" anything happen. Time to deliver a message. At least we sort of have an address. Lets get out of the Guild, it is obviously closing time."

Assuming Heironymus knows the way to the merchants quarter he and the others will head that way looking for Allyn's house. (Again, assuming no opposition - this seems like the obvious choice at this point.)

"I am aware of the time, and apologize for my late arrival. However, I already have a contract. In order to fulfill it I need to locate the merchant that hired me. Can you tell me how to locate *****?"

If the man at the desk is not helpful, Hieronymus will stress the urgency of their business. Something along the lines of, "The merchant will be extremely anxious to meet with us. It is not my intent to be pushy, but I know how frustrated he will be if we are delayed. I would prefer to avoid that circumstance. Please, sir. This is important, and have no doubt about what this will mean to *****"

Heironymus will NOT do anything threatening. He will not yell or get frustrated, he will very calmly try to stress the importance of their mission. If the man gets agitated, he will back away with hands in the air saying, "I am not looking to cause problems. Good day, sir."

Subject: To deliver a message, so simple a task

(Does Hieronymus remember if there was a specific desk at which they spoke to the merchant or his representative? If so, he would suggest If not, then the comments below . . .)

Glancing briefly around, Heironymus speaks quietly but quickly to his companions. "Here we are, the den of wealth. Does it make sense if I, as the sole human in the group, approach one of the desks? The rest of you stand back where you can be seen, no doubt seeing dark skinned elves will get some attention even at closing time."

If no one voice opposition (And Heironymus is more than willing to let others do the talking if they think it wise.) Heironymus will approach a desk, either the one he was hired at or one where the person in attendance has not finished packing. (Closest non-finished packer to the left if you want a choice.) He will approach and say, "Excuse me, there is a very important message for the merchant (insert name, which I can't remember at the moment and don't have time to look up

)"

If the person at the table attempts to brush him off because of closing time he very politely push the issue stressing that the message is very important. He will only mention the caravan or the dark elves if:
A) He becomes convinced that he is talking to a representative of the right merchant, or
B) He can get no response any other way.

However, he will not reveal anything other than the fact that an urgent message must be delivered in person. If pushed he will also stress that the merchant in question will be very upset if this message does not get through very quickly.

"I have no specific reason not to trust the merchant at this point. He hired us and seemed very upset at the loss of his daughter. But even so, his daughter might have gone willingly with the brigands. Maybe. If the daughter was not what she seemed, then what of the father? I don't know that he is untrustworthy, but right now deception seems to be the rule and not the exception."

As the others discuss the name on the envelope, Heironymus adds, "This way to the Guild, there seems no reason to stop and give people who are staring time to do any more." (Assuming he knows the way, Hieronymus will lead the way to the Merchants Guild)

Heironymus did not like the attitude of the guards. It seemed to make the evil elfs comments about a war take on new life. With attitudes like that it wouldn't take much of a spark to turn hostility into open conflict. But who would gain from such a thing? Certainly not the common folk who would do the dying.

He watched as his new companions dealt with the hostile guard. He was pleased and impressed as they did not allow themselves to react to his attitude. Being able to stay calm in harsh circumstances was a very useful skill, especially for a diplomat, which it appeared might be their destiny. Who knew?

In the meantime, it was time to find a merchant. "The merchants guild seems like the logical choice as that is where we were hired. Certainly people there would know him. Plus, (Assuming here) the guild is logically in the merchants quarter, so it should take us in the right direction anyway. I would suggest we go to the guild and start asking around, although I wouldn't mention the nature of the message to anyone but the recipient. I begin to wonder if even he is not what he seemed at first."

So saying, the cleric waited to hear if his companions agreed. It was time to start moving through the city. Heironymus looked around his eyes automatically drawn to those who seemed to be least able to enjoy the fruits of the city.

As for returning for the horse, if it is a4 days from here (8 both ways then) it might be unwise to go back for it. But I also suspect there is a special bond with that particular animal so it really is Kyara's choice to make. H will accept her decision.
