Subject: The fight continues.

Thaoran was pleased and a bit surprised at how well his unorthodox tactic had worked and quickly sheathed his blade and reclaimed his bow.  His goal was to finish the now entangled goblin, but in his haste, he managed to get his bow string mixed in with a little branch.  Not realizing this, when he let loose the shot the branch caught the string and dropped the arrow at his feet.  The branch then rebounded and smacked the poor archer in the nose.  It was not his most glorious shot ever and he secretly hoped the rest of the group had been so engaged as to not notice.   (A 1 on the dice is never good.)

Silver hoped to repeat her dramatic performance on her last attack and sliced with her rapier at the goblin in front of her hitting it hard in the neck.  But this time she caught just a bit of its armor on the way in and wasn’t able to remove the foul creature’s head – or even kill it, although the blow did come close.  (-6hp)  Her second blow failed to hit as the creature threw up a desperate parry.  It was wounded, but not out.

With the goblins directly in front of him gone, Hornet reverted to his previous tactic and, grabbing his crossbow again, fired at what he believed to be the biggest threat – the gnoll in the web.  The gnoll was paying no attention to what might be coming at it, instead focusing on the web around it, but Hornet got its attention when his bolt slammed into the creature’s side.   It howled in pain and looked at Hornet with rage in its eyes.  The creature seemed to channel that rage effectively as it broke free from the web and charged the elven archer.  It slammed its spear at Hornet but he was quick enough to doge the powerful blow.   That pleased the elf, but he now stood toe to toe with a beastly hyena-man that stood well over 6’ tall.  And the creature’s breath stank.

The goblins in the web seemed to find the struggle to break free harder than the gnoll did.  Try as they might, most could not break the hold of the web – their struggles were not aided by the coughing and wheezing several of them were doing.  But two did break free and charged the party.  With the two already on the free side of the web, that made 4 goblins again standing against the group, one of them badly injured by Silver’s blow.  The injured one thrust his blade as hard as he could at Silver, but managed to only hit the surrounding brush – the elf easily dodged the blow.  Dok, Hornet and Tharoan were also all the target of goblin attacks, but this time all of the blows missed.

Having been attacked, Dok used his axe to finish off the goblin Silver had injured, easily landing a solid blow on the creatures side.  His spiritual weapon he moved against the gnoll glaring at Hornet.  He had hoped the beast would still be in the web, but no such luck.  In fact, there was no luck at all as the glowing axe missed the creature as it regrouped from its own missed spear thrust.

Soledad’s role in the fight was to maintain the web that kept the larger forces of their opponent at bay.  She thus slunk further into the underbrush so that she could not be struck and lose the critical spell.  But she wasn’t entirely out of the game as she cast a minor illusion at one of the goblin’s heads.  A black sphere that screamed now encircled its head.  The goblin was bobbing and weaving with the flow of the battle so there was no chance its head would stay perfectly centered on the sphere, but perhaps it would distract him.  The next round would tell.

And then it was time for the Vargolg to act.  The party didn’t know what was in there beyond the fact of two arrows flying out already.  It seemed those inside had managed some organization as two arrows flew out at the group, then another two and then another two.  It seemed the enemy had mastered the art of firing in shifts.  Shoot and step back.  Shoot and step back.  Shoot and step back.  Still, the web and those in it provided some degree of cover for the group.  None of these arrows were aimed at the witch.  She was simply too hard of a target.  All of the other four were targeted it seemed and the arrows flew.  A miss.  A miss.  Whack!  A shaft struck Hornet.  (-5 hp)   A miss.  Whack!  Hornet seemed to be getting the brunt of things as another arrow struck him a glancing blow as he glared at the gnoll.  (-4 hp)  And then a miss.

As the last two arrows flew through the air two more gnolls came charging out of the cave mouth.  They immediately became entangled in the web but were fighting to free themselves.

Overview

As before, four of you are lined up across the gulley with Soledad hunkering down in the back about 30’ back.

On your side of the web there are three goblins.  (One from before and two that escaped the web.)  One of these has a screaming black illusion around its head, although you are unsure of its exact effect.  There is also one injured gnoll free of the web.

In the web are 5 goblins and 2 gnolls. All working to get free.

In the Vargolg . . . ??????   6 arrows came at you in waves of two.

*Dok’s post wasn’t completely clear.  Spiritual weapon can be used to attack using only a bonus action.  This means he still gets his normal attack as well.  I interpreted “continue to engage those closest to him” as meaning that he would also attack with his axe as that seemed the obvious thing and I wasn’t sure if Hammer knew he could do both.

Total killed so far:  8 goblins and 1 gnoll.

Subject: The battle rages

The battle raged and the group fought to keep from being overrun as the Vargolg disgorged its multitudes.  Soledad’s web spell seemed to give the group a quick advantage as many were caught in the sticky mess.  But Soledad took a bad wound in the fighting and the group knew that without that web they were in trouble.  The goal seemed to be to protect the witch to protect the web.  But there were still 5 right in front of them – and more working their way through the web.

The first to act was Hornet who didn’t seem pleased at taking a blow from the creature.  But he kept his head and shouted for the others to guard the witch.  He then tossed aside the goblin’s blade that was still covered with his own blood and planted his own rapier deep into the entrails of the vile thing.  Twisting the blade he pushed the corpse off of his blade and looked around to see who needed help the most.

Thaoran took a less aggressive approach and attempted to use the sun (that had recently come out after the nights rains) to blind his opponent.  It was an unusual tactic and probably wouldn’t have worked except the creature was already struggling to breath because of the smoke it had enhaled.  As it choked and gasped the light flashing in its eyes seemed too much for it.  It threw its arm in front of its eyes and stepped back – right into the web.

Silver was as fast as the other two and quickly whipped one rapier at the goblin in front of her but missed as the creature ducked below her strike.  But again, the smoke, which seemed to have failed as originally intended, had an impact.  As he first blade passed harmlessly over the goblin’s head it started coughing and stood up to try and breathe.  It was an opening Silver would not miss and her second rapier sliced cleanly through the thing’s neck as it attempted to stand.  In classic fashion, the head rolled one way as the body toppled the other.

The goblins that remained didn’t just stand around and watch.  The one in front of Dok leapt at the dwarf.  Frustrated in its first attack on the dwarf it had more success the second time – striking the dwarf a glancing blow.  (-4 HP)   The one in front of Soledad was still howling its glee when the elf slipped away in front of it.  Soledad moved 20’ further into the brush and hoped the others could hold the line.  Angered that his target was gone the goblin spun and swung at Dok – catching the dwarf unprepared for the blow from his flank.  This time the blow was a bit heavier, but the sturdy dwarf was built for combat.  But these blows would add up.  (-5 hp, so -9 total to Dok.)

In anger at the blows coming at him Dok brought his spiritual weapon to bear creating a magically glowing axe.  His first thought was to protect Soledad and he did just that – slamming the axe into the goblin’s chest and crushing the creature. Another goblin down.

That was all for the 10 individuals on the river side of the web, but there were plenty more in the web.  7 more started the turn in the web and were attempting to break free.   But the spell stood strong and the coughing goblins had trouble getting out.  Only one did.  The gnoll came close and was almost free when the web pulled it back in.  No others yet came pouring out of the cave mouth – they seemed deterred by the web in front of them.  But they were there and a couple of arrows came flying out of the entrance.  The shots were difficult – the web itself slightly obscured the view as did the numerous bodies struggling to break free.  But one thing was obvious – the arrows were aimed at Soledad.  The goblins knew who held the web.  But with all of those obstacles and the surrounding brush neither found its mark.

Overview:

You are now lined up across the gulley like this:  Hornet, silver, Dok, gap, Thaoran.  Soledad is now about 20’ behind the rest of you.  Right now there are TWO goblins free of the web and directly in front of you – one in front of Dok and the other in front of Silver.  There are 7 goblins currently stuck in the web.  (There had been 7, one escaped, but the one in front of Thaoran backed into it.)  Plus the gnoll is webbed.  An unknown number of others exist within the tunnel – but two arrows came out at you.

Total Killed so far:  7 goblins and 1 gnoll.

Mathis listened to the discussion after he had said his piece.  He was glad to hear the split would be even - it seemed for the best since the whole point of having a team was to have diverese skills.  And that likely meant non-shooters.  Like him.  A bounty hunter!  It was hard to supress a chuckle.  If anyone who had ever known him could only see him now . . .  chowing down on enchiladas with a bunch of toughs and talking about a bounty raid.  Life was a funny thing.

He sat back and listened to the plan.  He was ready to go as soon as the call to move out was given.

Subject: Line 'em up

Everyone is within 20' of each other.  You are lined up across the width of the gulley.  The gulley is only 20' wide - so nobody can be more than 20'.  Directly in front of you is a similar line of goblins, one facing each of you.  But the answer to the question - yes, within easy range.

I did post the order you are in across the gulley in the game post, but I don't remember it off the top of my head.  You can look there to find it if you want to know who is on either side of Soledad.

Topic: Blacktooth Ridge Q&A
Subject: Actions, Moves and posting

For the way actions and movement works - look above in the thread where I put in a bit of an explanation for both actions and movement.

A couple of key things to keep in mind:

1.  You can always change your post up to the time I have posted the turns results.  Thaoran has already posted, but if you want to you can go in and edit and change your action.  That is fine -as I said, until I post results.  Then you live or die with what you posted.

2.  Soledad is in melee with a goblin.  Some of you can go and try to protect her, but it doesn't change the fact that she is in combat.  As long as the goblin is in melee with her it can choose to attack her if it wishes.  There are several possible ways to get out of combat - but note the order of action.  Based on last turns actions it looks like in the next round the first to move will be Thaoran, Silver and Hornet.  then the 5 goblins near you go.  Then Soledad and Dok.  You aren't sure how those caught in the net figure into things.  But that means that the goblin in front of her will get to go before Soledad gets to act.  So, possible ways to get Soledad out of combat include things like:

A.  Kill the goblin in melee with her.  Can Thaoran kill it in one hit?  Possibly.  FYI, Thaoran is also engaged with the goblin in front of him, but as you are all in a row, he could attack the goblin on Soledad without really  moving.

B.  Soledad could run backwards.  If she attacked and then ran, if the creature in front of her is still alive (or awake, she mentioned sleep) it would get an attack of opportunity when she left melee.

C.  She could flee backwards, forgoing the attack and using her action to "disengage."  She would then be up to 30' back - and the goblin could potentially follow her next turn.

D.  Some other method of movement you devise - spells like misty step and such are an example of this.

With the gulley only being 20' across you are standing more or less should to shoulder.  This means that each individual character and goblin is really "in melee" range with up to 3 other individuals.  The one directly across from them and the ones adjacent on each side.  (Except for the ends, which have a gulley wall and not an individual on one side.)  This means each has 3 possible targets to swing at and an attempt to flee could potentially generate 3 attacks of opportunity.  Welcome to a crowded fight.

Subject: Squishy Witches

Nat 20s are hard for even mage armor to avoid.

If it was a question - yes, Soledad can maintain concentration on the spell and cast another.  She just can't cast two spells that take concentration at once.  FYI, if Initiative wasn't obvious from the post, the three archers go first, then most of the enemy.  Dok and the squishy witch go next.  Exactly how those in the web play into that mix is unclear.

Subject: Second web is the charm?

The group fled the smoke-filled tunnel back out into he fresh air.  They made quick work of the first two goblins to follow them out, felling the pair with well placed arrows.  But it seems attempting to smoke out the goblins was similar to ringing the doorbell.  The Vargolg, a barracks of the Dark One of old, now disgorged its occupants at the party.  They didn’t know how much the caves held, but apparently a large chunk of it was coming at them out of the smoke.  Half a dozen goblins led the charge followed by 2 gnolls.  More?  They couldn’t tell.

Hornet followed up his excellent first shot with another hit.  Aiming over the heads of the goblins he called out to the party that the gnolls should be targeted first.  But gnolls are hardier than goblins and his bolt struck the creature, but did not bring it down.  (-6 hp).  Silver, angry that her first shot had missed, shot at the same time as Hornet and grinned as she saw her arrow drive into the creature shoulder and stagger it backwards.  (-9 hp)  The next to fire was Thaoran and he also hit his target.  (-5hp)  The gnoll was badly bloodied, but not quite down.

At this point several of the lead monsters charged at the group.  There was no hiding.  They were only a dozen feet away and quickly closed to melee with the party.  As they charged the party did notice that their smoke plan had produced at least some benefit.  A couple of the goblins were coughing and sputtering from the smoke.  But they could still wield blades and swiped them at the party.

The first leapt straight for Thaoran but struggling for clean air made the blow weak and the elf was able to step to the side barely avoiding taking a scimitar to the head.  The second went for Hornet and was quick enough to get inside the elf’s defenses.  The creatures scimitar opened a gash along one arm as the elf attempted to use the brush for cover.  (-5 hp for Hornet)  Silver was the next to get targeted but the creature was so busy coughing and hacking as it came that it stumbled and actually cut off a chunk of its own boot.  Silver was hardly threatened by the swing, but she was now in melee with the coughing and stumbling creature.  Dok and Soledad did not escape the party unmolested.  Another goblin went straight for the dwarf, but found his attack easily parried by the dwarf’s axe.  Soledad was not so lucky.  The goblin she had earlier burned was angry and brought his blade down hard on the spellcaster.  She didn’t go down, but the blow was one she would not soon forget.  (Crit hit for -11 HP)

But the party wasn’t done.  The last two moves by the party came almost simultaneously.  Soledad had prepared a web spell for the enemy and didn’t let a little thing like a scimitar to the ribs stop her.  At the same time Dok fired a firebolt at the injured gnoll.  The thing was lit up by a blast of radiant light and collapsed.  Or, at least, it would have collapsed had its corpse not been held up by the sudden appearance of a web.

Web is a spell that sometimes gets overlooked, but in the right circumstances it can be quite effective.  It creates a 20’ cube of webbing.  The webbing isn’t solid, but the terrain becomes difficult and vision is slightly obscured.  Plus, its big effect is that those caught within its grasp are in danger of being restrained.  It seems the builders of the Vargolg, by intention or not, had crafted their entrance in a location that was perfectly suited to a web spell.  At this point the gulley was roughly 20’ across and the space between the entrance and the tree/brush line was just about twenty feet.  Soledad’s spell completely filled the area with entangling webs.  Struggling in the sticky mess were half a dozen goblins and one angry gnoll.

Overview:

You are spread out in a line across the gulley.  All of you are in melee and will no longer be able to use bows unless something changes.

The 5 goblins that attacked you got far enough from the entrance of the cave and close enough to you to NOT be caught in the web.  So there are 5 goblins on your side of the web.  One of them is injured.  (The one facing Soledad.)  Within the web you can see about 6 goblins and a gnoll.  All told you can currently see 12 goblins – more than you could see last turn.   Creatures caught in a web do get to make saving throws each turn to try and break its grip.  But it is difficult terrain (half movement still) and they must get out of its area or risk getting entangled again.  Web is also a concentration spell, so if Soledad takes damage she will need to save to avoid losing the spell.

You are lined up across the gulley in the following order:  Hornet, silver, Dok, Soledad, Thaoran.

Total Killed so far:  4 goblins and 1 gnoll.

Guiding Bolt:

A flash of light streaks toward a creature of your choice within range. Make a ranged spell Attack against the target. On a hit, the target takes 4d6 radiant damage, and the next Attack roll made against this target before the end of your next turn has advantage, thanks to the mystical dim light glittering on the target until then.

At Higher Levels: When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 2nd Level or higher, the damage increases by 1d6 for each slot level above 1st.

Subject: That was sort of like ringing the doorbell

As the party entered the cave, they hadn’t really considered how their smoke screen would act against their own desire to breath clean air.  But it very quickly became obvious that breathing would be a problem soon.  Even as those in front were recognizing the danger to their lungs they were suddenly confronted by a group of goblins coming at them out of the smoke.  The little buggers were running low and crouching, trying to stay under the smoke.  It didn’t seem to be working.

The lead goblin quickly fell, but now the group was confronted by several well smoked goblins in a very hazy setting 20’ or so into the entrance of the cave.  Recognizing the folly of trying to fight in the smoke the group turned to run out of the cave.  Hornet easily disengaged and ran up the cave tunnel.  Thaoran moved with him.  A goblin blade flashed through the space he had just occupied, but missed by several feet.  As the party moved back into the fresh air several arrows flew through the air around them, but didn’t seem to have been aimed so much as shot wildly up the tunnel.  None found their mark.

As the group exited the cave and quickly made their way across the 20’ or so of open group to the tree line they could hear shouting and some snarling from behind them.  The group reached the limited cover provided by the brush and spun to see what was following them.  For a moment that was nothing, but then with more yelling, snarling and the clang of weapons the cave’s denizens spewed out of the opening at them.

(Technically that is the end of the round.  A few of them are just coming out of the cave.  But as your plan was already stated, I don’t see much reason not to give the next round.  There isn’t much you can do to change the basic premise.  If you wish to change something please tell me, but this should be following what I think you posted.)

The group didn’t know exactly who or what was in the Vargolg to say nothing of their numbers.  They knew they had killed two goblins so far.  (One in the web and one in the tunnel.)  But that wasn’t much.  They didn’t seem to have chased right on the heals of the group when they retreated, but only a moment later there was a large charge.  Multiple goblins sprinted out of the smoke.  All seemed to be holding a cloth over their mouths in an attempt to stop the smoke.  It appeared to have worked better for some than others.

The first goblin out of the cave was hacking badly from the smoke but never got the chance to breath clear air.  As soon as he emerged from the smoke an arrow from Thaoran took him in the throat, spun him around and dropped him to the ground.  The second faired no better as Hornet’s bolt pierced its eye – an almost perfect shot.  For Hornet, not for the goblin.  The third goblin was also gasping from the smoke and paused as it exited the smoke to gulp down clear air.  The surprising stop might have saved its life as Silver’s arrow now bounced off of its armor instead of finding its home in the creatures neck.  The goblin gasped in surprise and moved forward as others behind it pushed it onward.  It charged directly into Soledad’s firebolt.  The creature was staggered, but not killed.  (5 damage.)

Dok was the only one not to take action yet.  He had set himself up as a rear guard.  He was a little bit behind the others, but it seemed the action would soon come to him.  As he looked up at the cave entrance it became obvious that a goblin horde had been roused.  They kept coming.  Two lay dead from arrows and another was badly burned.  But they were quickly replaced by a half dozen more.  Behind the goblins, and towering over them, out of the smoke the dwarf say two large humanoids that look more like walking hyenas than anything else.  They were ugly – and the source of the snarls the party had head as they ran.  He knew what they were – gnolls.  Ugly, vile and dangerous gnolls.  The monsters charged directly at the party.

The big picture:

There is about 20’ of space between the cave entrance and the tree line.  It is quickly filling with beasties.  At about the point of the tree line the gulley is about 20’ across, maybe a bit more.  The five of you could stand across it if you wanted to do so. Dok is currently a few steps back in rearguard mode, but could easily move up or whatever.  There is a path about 5’ wide meandering down the center of the gulley and brush more than trees throughout the rest.  The sides are fairly steep and would be a challenge to climb out of.

You said you would run out and prepare arrows – so that is what you did.  Clearly the creatures stopped for a second after encountering you and then charged again.  This gave you one round of shots as they poured out of the cave – not quite on your heels, but close.  Next turn they will be upon you for melee, not just arrows.  Silver, Thaoran and Hornet rolled very high initiative and will get to go first.  Dok and Soledad might follow some of the monsters.

Right now you can see 7 goblins (one badly burned) and two gnolls.  You can’t tell if anything else is coming as the gnolls are only now emerging from the smoke.   It appears that you have roused the fortress for a battle.

Subject: Bonus actions

I guess I didn't get the post up on Thursday.  But I'm working on it now.

In general you get three "actions" per round"

1.  Main action (Attack, spell, whatever)

2.   Movement - usually 30'

3.  Bonus action - something small.  You can open a door, drop a vial, grab something, etc....  The idea is that it is a "litttle action" - not big enough to take up your actual action step, but those other little things you do.

To run you can sacrfifice your "main action" and essentially take a second movement phase - and go double distance.  But since you give up your main action you don't get to attack or cast spells.  You just sprinted.  Some classes do have bonus actions based on their classes - rogues are one such as they are a sneaky class.  Thus disengage as a bonus action.  For other classes (like fighter) you can use your action to disengage, but then you can't attack and can't sprint.

Thaoran is a fighter.  When looking at the build you have at the moment you have one real bonus action:  action surge.  Once per long rest (think of it as once per day) you can take an extra action on your turn.  This means a second attack, or disengage and still attack. But you only get it once a day.

**And my own personal version of things that is in no way official.  I like to think of a fourth type of action - the theatrical action.  This is available to every player every round but has no functional impact on game play.  This when you get to kick the goblin you just killed, give the  vampire the finger, dof your hat to the minotaur before atacking - you know, the little things that make life just that much better.  But they don't actually ammount to any type of actual impact on results.  (Although diplomacy could be impacted by some depending on your flavor of theater.)

Mathis listened carefully as others in the group spoke and made plans.  Once their piece was said it was time to actually lay down for the mission.  He didn't really like the C-Metal job much.  He had nothing against the tribe - and Ghalahn was proof of how useful they could be to have on your side.  He was a good team member, so Mathis wanted to support the gig.  Still, he'd prefer to be going after a missing kid or a group of torturers.  He really didn't see himself as a bounty hunter.  In fact, the very idea was kind of funny in its own way.  But if the team went after bounties, then Mathis would be there with them.

All of which meant that it was time to throw his chit onto the table.

As he was about to speak up Ghalahn did so first and spoke about the split of the bounties.  It was a topic that had crossed his mind as well.  When the big C-Metal had finished speaking he added his bit.  "I'm in if you need a techie for the gig.  And I have no problem sharing my portion with the group.  'All for one and one for all' and all that bit.  But if this is just a firefight I don't know how much use I'd be.  Lets just say that isn't my forte.  I suspect I'd be there helping you guys collect the bounties.  I'm ok with that, if it gets us what we need to move on to the next gig.  But you gotta tell me if you think my skills are needed here.  I won't be insulted if this isn't my play, you just gotta be straight about it.  But I'm in if useful."

Yeah, I figured a techie would still be useful, but since it seems the pay is specifically "per kill," well, it raises some questions.

Mathis will be kin and I'll get a post up tonight.  (Wednesday.)

That would work.  It just seemed from the posts so far that people weren't aware that there were goblins directly in front of you.

A quick clarification since I'm not sure you are all interpreting things correctly.  A group of goblins ran out of the smoke smack dab into you.  Hornet and Thaoran killed the first one.  But they are essentially engaged with another group of 4-5 (or somethng like that - in the smoke, who knows?).  This means you can't just turn and run.  Well, actually, you can, but your opponents get an attack of opportunity if you do that.  Think about it like this:

1.  Hornet and Thaoran could attack first and then run - which allows a free attack by the enemy when they run.

2.  Hornet and Thaoran can forgo attacking and use the disengage action instead to get away without provoking an attack of opportunity.

The above only applies to H and T because as the front two they are the only ones engaged in combat.

You can move back 30' - or run 60'.  But running takes your "action" for the round and prevents you from either attacking or disengaging - thus you would provoike the attack of opportunity.

All of the above assumes that those behind H and T have cleared out as well to clear the path.

You are currently about 20' or so into the smoky tunnel.  From the door to the treeline is another 20 feet or so.

Exactly how all of the above plays out will also depend on initiative rolls - the goblins may get to attack some before you can do anything.  (Note that if one of the front goblins goes before you, then they might get to attack twice in the round - their normal attack and then an opportunity attack - depending on the choices you make.  Goblins can also chase you and if they run as fast as you do they may be able to move and attack in the same round.)

The fastest anyone could get "poisoned" from the smoke is two rounds - it could happen by the end of the next round if someone fails both con saves.  The fastest anyone could collapse from smoke is 4 rounds assuming they fail all 4 con saves.  That won't happen if you bugger out now.
