Topic: Continuing Where We Last Left Off Again
Subject: A wall of fire was effective before they were zombies . . .

Jarenion saw the bolt of green magic pass by the party on its way down the tunnel. He was not happy to see the ice melt and the rats rise, but couldn't help but think that somehow they had been lucky - that bolt could easily have been meant for them instead of those already dead.

As his companions in the large cavern responded to the renewed threat of the were-rats, Jarenion made a quick decision and called out to them, "Everybody into the tunnel! That is a lot of zombies to kill twice!"

Even as he said it he could not help thinking to himself, "or three times. Or Four. I bet that bolt would keep coming."

****Assuming the group follows his direction and backs into the tunnel, the mage will block the entrance with a wall of fire.

Subject: A first encounter . . . .well, for me, anyway

I'm thinking a nice little wall of something to block off the bad rats is a good idea, especially with some of our best muscle in the hallway. I'll be back in a few hours to post in the game thread and will do some such thing unless somebody else has a better idea.

***Addition to original post - I'm thinking we want to get away from here. Even if we can beat the rats again, which I suspect is possible even if 1/2 the party is down the hall dealing with icicles, I get the sneaky suspicion that the bolt of energy might just flash again shortly thereafter allowing us to do it all again. And again. And again. So we want to get away down the side passage. Sound reasonable? (Also, if we decapitate rats, can they still reanimate?)

So, I'm thinking the 4 of us in the cavern want to back into the tunnel and I can cast a wall of fire blocking the entrance. Between that and the turning of the undead, our backs might be protected and we can move deeper into the tomb and ignore the zombie rats for now. Assuming the icicles are dealt with.

I would be interested in stopping by sometime and trying this out. Tonight I can't - tis the season of graduation parties. However, I am having a problem. I have never been able to get the chat room to open. I get to the point where it says the chat room "should open in another window," but it never does. No, I don't have a pop-up blocker enabled. Any suggestions?

Well, reading through the start of the adventure took a bit longer than expected, but with only 10 pages I just read it all so I'd have a clue what was up. I can't imagine why you would want to be sure to have a mage in a place like this. I should be able to get a post in for the mage tomorrow (Thursday) so that nobody is waiting on the new guy.

If anyone has suggestions, I'm open to them.

Also, a quick question - are Jarenion and a few of the others outside of the tunnel - and so still in the big cavern? If so, who exactly is still in the cavern? I just want to be sure I know before I start throwing fireballs or the like around.

Or are we all in the tunnel - which would create a bottleneck preventing 70 zombie rats from all getting to us at once?

As we wait to see if a new Sarge emerges and how the zombies react to our fearless leaders words, remember the words from the Carter expedition. Zombies (I'm assuming here based on the descriptions of our company) die from massive head trauma. No wooden stakes to the heart. And no bullets as long as the cap'n has the gag order on. We need big clubs upside the head.

Do we have much to hit them with besides rifle butts?

Topic: The Gobber King
Subject: Bad, Bad Gobbers! Trying to sneak up on us!

As Bou prepared for the plan outlined by Crow he was forced to confront the realization that this plan, like so many of the best laid plans, was not going to work quite as anticipated. The gobbers just didn't seem to want to play along. Bad, Bad Gobbers!

Still, the situation hadn't changed that much. Gobbers seemed to be incapable of being sneaky so their march through the woods was easy to spot. The overall plan didn't need to change all that much. only the path the creatures took on their way to entanglement had changed.

So Bou quietly slipped back a little bit further down the road. The space he had been occupying would now be needed for the entangle spell and Bou had no wish to be entangled. 10 steps back and his sling remained at the ready.

*Bou's exact actions depend on the side of the road the first attack is made on. If Bou was on that side he will back up 15 feet past the location of the furthest back x on the map and target (with his sling) the second furthest forward gobber. If Bou is not on the side of that first attack, he will Back up 10 feet past the last x and target any gobber that seems to be outside of the spells area of effect. I hope that makes sense - it all depends on if he is on the side of the attack or the side of the spell.
****Based on the map, Bou would just move back a few feet and sling at those across the road.

Well, not so much "for hire." I work cheap. Free, actually.

But it seems I am taking over the mage. I will try and get some reading done tonight to figure out what is going on in the game. Any information you want to get me will be greatly appreciated. Also, I haven't played a high level mage in a LONG TIME. Which means I'm not used to thinking about all of the spell possibilities. If any of you have suggestions on what I/Jarenion should do, I will not feel like you are trying to control my character. I make no promises that I will take your advice, but I would certainly appreciate it. And if you wish your characters to survive, you might appreciate it as well.

Subject: A question of trees ... no, seriously

I know we are waiting a bit to see if we can get another player, but I wanted to get an update posted for Bou before I forgot to respond to the sneaky gobbers. But before I do, there seems to be time for a question.

Bou wants to retreat a bit to allow room for the entangle spell - he has no desire to get caught in its area of effect. However, he also wants to be able to see to sling stones.

What sort of visibility is there in the trees? If he retreats a bit, but stays in the trees for cover, will he be able to see enough to see his targets?

Hopefully a Mage is found quickly.

With gobbers coming up behind I would think we shift back to the wagons and let them think theyhave trapped us. Coming through the bushes is perfect for entangle, depending on how spread out they are. Which side will the spell be cast on? Bou would be inclined to use the wagons for a little cover and sling stones towards the unentangled from there.

Goblins? But these are Gobbers. Much different. I have it on authority from a GM I know.

Plus these gobbers can't shoot you in the back, they don't have bows. Well, the ones we have seen don't have bows.

Gotta admit, the entangle plan sounds like a good one.

We should probably pick between the two quickly so things can keep moving.
Can we do the same basic plan, but instead of luring them to the carts, lure them into the bramble? Bou could even speak goblinkind to try and lure them into the bramble if that seemed best.

Do we need to lure them off of the path for the entangle spell to work?

As the captain shouted a warning to the approaching figures, Corban held his position with his rifle.

He spoke quietly enough for the nearby captain to hear him, but not loudly enough to cover any response from the presumed zombies. "Just holding the scope on them for better vision. No shooting captain."

So saying, he carefully watched the approaching figures through his scope to see if they reacted to the captain's message of peace, love and kindness.

Corban peered through his scope at the approaching . . . zombies. No, it didn't surprise him. After his last few trips into the darkness with Ye Olde not much surprised him anymore. He was a bit surprised that they didn't even give him the willies. Getting used to the weirdness. Was that a good thing?

Keeping his vision focused through his scope he spoke, "Captain. The Lieutenant spoke about head trauma being the way to handle zombies. I hate to make noise, but would this be a good time to test out that theory? I'd like to know if one well-placed shot to the noggin' qualifies as enough trauma. From the look of ‘em, I doubt any of them are likely to make use of weapons, but since the Germans are carrying side-arms, I'll target those first. Just give the order."

So saying the sniper calmly kept his focus on the approaching figures. He was ready to fire, but would hold until given orders.

Bou listened as Crow described the situation with the Gobbers. He liked what he heard. The ranger clearly had the courage to scout ahead and the wits to look for the key information. And the others in the group of guards all immediately stood ready to take action. The combat hadn't started yet, but so far there was much to like in the small group.

Bou didn't say anything directly, as he had already asked his question and generally felt that the real fighters were best suited to plan the attack. He was a little surprised that Crow's plan called for bringing the enemy to them - and giving up their presence. But, he had to admit, it seemed like a good plan. So instead he just shook his head to indicate that he had no more questions or suggestions and pulled out his sling and nodded to indicate his readiness to do his part. He wanted these others to know they could rely on him just as he needed to be confident in them.

Subject: Gobbers? Did someody asy Gobbers??

The first part of the trip with the Mario Carts was a maddening one for young Bou. In part it was beautiful. He marched along next to the carts and up into the pass. As they moved he looked behind bushes, climbed up rock piles, scrambled into thickets and stared in wonder out at the vistas of the lowlands as they moved higher. This was why he travelled. The world was full of beautiful scenery and, while the Railir Peaks weren't perhaps the most beautiful of mountains, he was getting to see it. Keeping his eyes open for potential threats was no problem for the little Cidal as he could hardly have kept himself from staring around at the scenery.

But it was amazing what a negative impact a few crazy brothers could have on a group. These boys really needed a way to get their aggressions out. Maybe a game or something? Bou spent much of his time while watching the scenery imagining the brothers careening down the path and over the countryside in their vegetable carts and lobbing fruits at each other. It was amusing and had the added advantage of appearing deadly. Although Warrio might need a pretty big cart.

The food didn't improve his mood. There wasn't much even he could do with gruel like that. But he did glance at the fruits and veggies a bit - there was better food nearby . . .

But then Crow came back with his news of Gobbers ahead. A little thrill went through Bou as the news was delivered. Adventure! Still, a little bit of practicality came through and he worried about a trap. Crow seemed sure he hadn't been seen. And he did seem to know what he was doing. But knowing the Gobbers were close by brought the hairs up on Bou's arm and he kept a careful eye on the surrounding terrain as the group quickly discussed strategy.

"If we're planning on sneaking up on them, I'm guessing my best role is to stay to the side and pick them off with my sling. But I'll close if needed." Turning to Crow has asked, "Did you see how many of them have bows or the like? Can we pick them off from a distance?"

Bou will get a post up Friday sometime. It would be great to have Crow post first since he is the one that saw the gobbers, but that depends on his schedule.

I'm guessing we will want to leave the brothers at the wagon and sneak up on them. There isn't much planning Bou can contribute to, as he is neither a warrior nor mage, but his sling is at the service of whoever is planning things. At least, I'm assuming he is going to stay back and launch bullets at gobber heads. Is there a specific plan to the attack?

Subject: Going OUT of the gate? Now that is not what I expected . . .

Sirion followed Sargent Jessop out the Eastern gate. As he passed out of the gate he looked quizzically at the solid wall of defense that was being left behind. This seemed weird to the sorcerer. Admittedly, he hadn't been in many sieges. Well, in truth, he'd never been involved in a siege. But he heard about them, and to his knowledge those who had the benefit of big defensive walls generally stayed behind those walls. That was the whole point of a wall. To be a wall between you and the bad guys. And to give you the advantage of position.

"Sargent Jessop," the sorcerer asked as he moved out of the security of the town's defenses, "I'm sure there is a reason - I admit I have never defended a town from the undead before. I just want to learn as much as I can about fighting the undead from those that have survived doing it for a while. But why are we leaving the security of the walls? If we stayed inside couldn't we pick them off as they tried to climb over? Why expose ourselves if we could eliminate them from safety?"

As he awaited an answer to his inquiry, Sirion mentally prepared himself for the task at hand. If there was room, "burning hands" was likely a good choice on the undead. If not, he always "disrupt undead." The title said it all. He gripped his spear as he strode towards the combat that was surely lurking ahead.

Subject: Getting to know you, getting to know all about you . . .

Kidalbou was ready to get moving. He had arrived in the town in the early winter and been forced by the season to winter there. It wasn't a bad place, but he had the feeling that he had squeezed about as much excitement from this particular fruit as there was to get. And, if he was being honest with himself, probably the town felt about the same.

Since his arrival he had done what he always did - investigate. Over the winter he had poked his nose into every business as well as most of the homes, barns, sheds and closets in town. He had made many friends this way. He was naturally gregarious and enjoyed chatting with the various merchants around town. And they seemed to appreciate his fascination with their goods. At least they appreciated his fascination as long as he was fascinated in front of them with both hands visible. Which really wasn't a problem as the last thing he wanted to do was annoy people in a town he was stuck in. Some seemed to get exasperated by his desire to open every door and cabinet, but he did no real harm and provided entertaining conversation. So he roamed the town and quickly got to know an amazingly large percentage of the community. Some of the local kids even developed the habit of jumping out from behind things at him and yelling "Bou!" He found it funny, but rarely surprising. The parents seemed less amused when they received the same treatment.

Another person he got to know was the cook/bar keeper at the tavern he was staying at. She was an interesting woman who knew how to make delicious freshly baked bread. The first time the young Cidal had poked his nose into her kitchen she had nearly thrown her rolling pin at him, but his smile and obvious delight in her cooking soon brought her around. It wasn't long before the young Cidal spent much of the time that he wasn't wandering the town in the tavern's kitchens. He had always loved to cook- probably because he loved good food. Part of his plan in wandering the world was to experience the cuisines of other places. So he started in this tavern, which had, admittedly, rather basic "peasant fare." But Bou did his best, despite limited supplies and off season ingredients, to spice things up a bit. When he presented the locals with his beef and mushroom stew with red wine sauce - in a bread bowl baked by the local cook - people noticed. The tavern owner even paid him a little to cook dinners after that.

Cooking passed the time and kept him out of too much trouble, but he was ready to move on. He had encountered a number of other travelers while waiting out the weather who also seemed eager to travel; the remnants of a group that "came through the cabinet" formed the bulk of the group. (It was a comment that never quite made sense to Bou, as he hadn't yet arrived in town when the group arrived and nobody had since seen fit to travel via cabinet.) They seemed like an experienced group that would be a good bet to join. They had found a job protecting a caravan of fruit and vegetables.

Now that had given him pause. When he'd set out on his adventures, daydreams of rutabagas had not been prominent. Still, it was work and it was travel, both of which he desired. And the mountain passes were hardly secure, so anything could happen. Who knew? Perhaps some gobbers would have a craving for asparagus?

Whatever the product they protected, he signed on for the job. His impression of his fellow guards was a positive one. He knew from experience that he would have to prove his worth to them. Quick fingered Cidals somehow were never given the benefit of the doubt. Still, Bou never doubted that he would be able to prove himself whenever the opportunity arose. And he knew he would be passing the same sort of judgements on his new companions that they passed on him. His life might depend on them, as theirs might on him, so a little caution was warranted.

But as the wagons were prepared for travel, things were looking up. Bou was in a very good mood.
