Subject: Sleep beckons the squirrelmaid

The hare maiden smiles a gentle smirk in return. “An attractive little creature such as yourself never received any attention,”

Violet averted her gaze slightly and shook her head instinctively, though she tried to keep the motion from showing.

she clucks her tongue against her teeth. “I find it hard to believe. Still,” looking back down the stairs with distain, “those beasts are not worthy of your time.”

"I'm Violet, or Vi in short." Violet offers.

“Ah!” cried the hare. “Where are our manners? I am Camille,” she says, taking Violet’s paws in her own. “Though, most kind creatures call me Cami.” Turning towards the fox, she begins, “And this is...”

“Luchian,” the fox says, gently stooping down to take one of Violet’s paws is his and kiss it softly. “Our apologies for the beastly behaviour of those two. Why Rosey continues to extend her hospitality to them,” he turns to Cami, “has been a matter of some debate between us, hasn’t it, dear?”

“Hmmm,” Cami replies, shaking her head is disapproval at the squirrels’ behaviour. “It matters not, though. We should not speak ill of our host, though,” she says thoughtfully to Luchian, “There’s likely many a folk who wonder why she shows us any graces too.”

“A fair point, my fair darling,” Luchian concedes with a soft smile and a nod. Turning his attention back to Violet, he continued, “I doubt very much the scoundrels will bother you anymore, Miss Violet.” Giving the squirrel maid a polite bow, “A good night to you.”

“Yes, yes,” Cami curtseyed as well, “May your rest be peaceful this night!”

Cami took Luchian’s offered arm and, together, the two of them turned to leave.

Violet gave a curtsey in return, "Thank you again, and a good night for you as well." She turned to her own door and entered, using the room key given to her and slipping inside, barely opening the door beyond what was necessary clearance for her small frame.

Once inside, she breathed a sigh of relief as she closed the door behind her. She lightly rubbed her cheeks, which still felt a bit warm. If she had foresight she would've requested a bath as well, but there was no real way she could have known this would happen. Instead she does the next best thing, lightly washing her face from the basin (if there is a small one in the room).

"I wonder which one it was. Or maybe it was both." Violet mused, "I suppose it doesn't matter now." She lay on the bed after getting ready.

"Cami." She murmured, "And Luchian. Thank you."

((And unless there's any interruptions, she'll probably sleep until woken up ))

Living with and dealing/haggling/requesting of are two different things in my mind...

When putting on a 'face', Catie uses her memory of previous interactions with other people in similar situations in order to ascertain how best to advance social combat. She reads the situation, reads emotional displays, and responds.

Catie without her mask, on the other hand, is what you are observing in these crew meetings. Re-learning to be a part of a team. Getting reacquainted to the dynamics of a group. She's more likely to be in this mode the more uncertain a situation appears to be, because the not-knowing puts stress on her.

The two situations are very different in my mind. In the first, the expected and anticipated social dance is mostly predefined. Both parties have objectives, and both are meeting at the table to negotiate or otherwise interact. In the second, there are no clear objectives, apart from maintaining the unity of the team. What is best for the group in the long term may be difficult to perceive or define.

I hope that makes sense

When Catie ends up thinking in the hypothetical, she ends up forgetting that other people aren't privy to her thoughts. See the interaction with Stephanie just prior to the meeting; half of her sentences are completely disjointed, because her mind is going from one thing to the other so quickly that her speech can't catch up. In this situation, where it's almost entirely hypothetical (since we don't know very much), it's kind of at its worst...

She'll get better as she gets readjusted to living with other people. Catie has lived by herself for a while now.

In this particular case, the 'he' she's referring to is Steele. At the back of her mind, she has the suspicions that this is a publicity stunt by him. Or possibly worse.

Tess stepped in quickly, “Whoa. Okay. That’s enough both of you. The wound is pretty fresh but we gonna pick at it over and over it ain’t never gonna to heal. Captain’s right though, we took this job and we need to see our way to the end. I’d like nothing more than to ruffle Mr. Steele’s feathers but we need to keep flying and keep eating. I’m rather fond of doing both. Yet, Grace has the right idea too. Forewarned is forearmed as they used to say and i think we need as much forearming as we can muster.”

Catie nodded, "My sentiments exactly. We're lacking information necessary to make any informed action."

“So Miss Princess has glommed onto Catie here so why don’t we use that? We are in the Black together for five days so I bet Catie can get the Princess alone for a spell."

Catie nods, "I'll certainly try to. The presence of the others seems to put her on her guard."

"JC? Maybe you can chat up this her Seth and see what he likes, maybe keep him distracted for a bit. He looks like the type that works out.” She then smiled a mischievous grin, “Then Jon here can pump the Wedding planner for information.”

Catie had to stifle a chuckle at Tess's comment.

As the impromptu meeting came to a closure, Catie noted aloud, "A line of inquiry that might be worth looking into, perhaps we're approaching the situation from the wrong angle. If Lilianna isn't happy, then it's unlikely it's for her benefit or feelings, but rather for his benefit. We might be able to find something from that side."

With no other addendum that she could think of offhand, Catie left and returned to her quarters. It wouldn't be a long sleep, but between schooling and long working hours, it was something she was acclimated to.

* * *

Day 2

Catie got up when her alarm said to. On planet this would have been around sunrise, but in the black, there was no reliable sun to wake her, and so the alarm was necessary.

From her luggage she pulled out clothes she used during one of her waitress jobs, gave them an ironing after seeing the creases in them from packing, and put them on. A light blue blouse paired with black modest-length skirt, and blue-grey v-neck cardigan. For makeup she only went with a bit of foundation to even her skin tone.

She knew she was up a bit early, but she had set her alarm up slightly earlier than normal for the other meeting. Catie waited outside of Angela's door, having assumed that's where Tess would meet her.

((She'll wait for a bit, and if neither make an appearance she'll just surmise that it was forgotten, which is understandable given what happened the other day, and return to her quarters to unpack a bit more during the period of time when other people get up))

Making her way to the galley, she murmured under her breath, "F14E7A13", before she gave a curtsey, seeing customers already present, "Good morning." She will walk around to everyone seated and ask, "Tea or coffee? And any allergies I should be aware of?"

She had enough experience as a waitress to know the basic pleasantries, but there was more than one reason to take that role now. If she was perceived as a mere servant, there was a decent likelihood that they would not be as guarded around her. This went to all of the guests, but particularly Lilliana, who was her primary target, so to speak. In addition, she got to get acquainted with some of their tastes, regardless of what else they said, which may give some insight into their personalities. Lastly, she liked cooking, and this would allow her to get more acquainted with the Destiny's galley.

Cats are sneaky. I can be a cat.

I can be that backup curious cat that shows up during curious moments within the odd-dom. Maybe she'll help. Maybe she'll watch. Wait, amendment, she'll always watch. She's a cat.

No, this is not an attempt at encroaching any local cat territory

PS. She may or may not also have damage reduction, so she is not scared of brooms.

Violet was so focused on what was in front of her, she never expected the paw at her back. She nearly stiffened in reflexive response, but seeing the opportunity granted by the motion, she took it, joining the hare and the fox as they made their way up the stairs. From behind she could hear Pete's outcry, and breathed a sigh of relief.

Turning to look back at the couple, Vi smiled, "Thank you. That's never happened before..." she trails off a bit.

She shakes her head, trying not to stare at the fox, which wasn't too hard because he wasn't in her direct line of sight as they ascended. Violet wasn't sure if she had ever really seen one before.

"I'm Violet, or Vi in short." she offers.

To answer the question, threads are not auto-subscribed to by default. In addition, there is no such setting to auto-subscribe, at least to my knowledge.

I believe this is intentional so as to limit potential unwanted emails, erring on the side of caution regarding that the user may not want so many emails. Also, if you added the functionality to auto-subscribe on post, then you'll always be needing to click 'unsubscribe to thread' on those ones you don't want a subscription to after posting.

Subject: Catie's standpoint...

From Catie's standpoint, she wants to help Lilliana, but at the same time she does not want to jeopardize anything that is currently in place, namely the transaction with Badger. As much as she dislikes the thought, the non-interference policy is the most reasonable course of action in her mind, unless more information becomes available that indicates the need for action. At this point, she's more keen on keeping everyone in the loop with regards to information obtained about the current situation, and is intent on expanding current knowledge in order to allow the crew to make an informed decision regarding Ms. Fairchild.

Her unspoken suspicions about the situation do lean towards the need for action, but unless she can prove the need to interfere, she isn't going to push the notion.

Of course, if it comes down to it, there is the possibility Catie might take creative license with the verbal contract... really depends on what information, if any, is able to be further obtained.

So in direct answer to Jon's question, her response is supposed to read 'I agree that we shouldn't do anything right this moment; we have insufficient knowledge with which to make a decision. This is just making sure everyone's in the knowledge loop.'

Edit: I like Grace's addendum... 'you know, the last time we were asked to deliver and not ask questions too'

It's possible Sib hasn't noticed this thread come up again, so I can poke him and see how things are on his end. Last I heard, he's dealing with end of school term pileup of essays (similar to me dealing with end of school term pileup of code assignments...) so both of us may have some delays between posts.

Violet usually liked being on the smaller scale. If she was larger, it'd be harder to fly, and being small she had speed on her side. It was also a benefit when trying to be inconspicuous.

Not so much when already seen and in confrontation. Such as now.

Her nose wrinkled a bit at the scent of Peter's breath. Still, that told her two things. One, intoxication might make him slower, and two, his friend probably was in a similar state. She visibly flinched when her wings were openly mentioned. They weren't the easiest things to hide, yet, she couldn't help but think that she needed to get better at hiding them.

"If you were watching, you'd know I already ate." Vi pointed out.

Despite her wits still about her, she looked very uncomfortable, almost uncertain how to react. On the one hand, she was surprised. Rather than negative attention, it was, in a way, positive. Or was it? She wasn't sure. Yet, she felt a bit oppressed, and training helped her slowly move a footpaw back, putting herself in a defensive stance, just in case. She hoped the shawl hid the position of her hands.

"What I need right now is sleep. I promised a close friend I wouldn't get sick, and don't plan on letting the rain last night break my promise." Violet replied, her voice taking a stubborn tone, one equally directed towards the ailment attempting to assert itself on her, as well as the two guys in front of her that were... well, trying to do the same.

If they decided to try and grab her, she'd use her readied posture to try to avoid it, either darting around them if the opportunity presented itself, or stepping away as appropriate.

In the end, she didn't feel like she was 'available' in the first place, even if, technically, she was.

Catie raised her hands in a noncommital gesture. "I think it's safe to say that this particular situation is quite volatile. Evidence, however, does point to a particular scenario... and it is not a pretty one. We can say with a high degree of confidence that Lilliana is not being happily wed. As I recall, it will take a few days to get there. As time progresses, it's almost guaranteed that she will get more desperate, regardless of any action on our part. What that will result in, well, I couldn't say at this point."

Catie crossed her arms and frowned, "However, there is something that does not fit. Arranged marriages are one thing, putting aside their morality for the moment, but it's entirely another for people to intentionally try to cover it up."

She paused a moment to try to organize her thoughts on the matter, "We know, for a fact, that the so called wedding planner purposefully tried to occupy our Captain's time. Considering that, I believe it was Angela who mentioned that the two other men did not exhibit displays of trained personnel, it's possible that they were actually provided to try to do the same towards other members of the crew. I recall that it was Jon, Angela, Tess and JC at the negotiation, right? Consider the 'wedding planner', the two men, and the bodyguard as the people to correspond to that."

Catie's pace sped up as she went, perhaps a bit of an indication of an underlying nervousness regarding either the whole situation or the missing information, "Of course I'm reaching the limits of what is safe to conjecture based on this considerable lack of key pieces of information but I believe it is a possibility that should be considered. Worst case scenario doesn't look very good but then worst case scenarios aren't called 'worst' for no reason. Either way I believe we need more information in order to decide whether a non-interference policy though the best option from an entirely business perspective might be detrimental in the long term for all involved parties."

Catie took a breath, "Sorry... I tend to talk faster when I get a bit nervous. Something here just does not add up. I don't want it to bite us when we're not expecting it."

Yet for all that she said, Catie kept her main suspicion internalized. She didn't have any proof to support her instinct, and even if it was true, there were limits as to what they could do at this point.

((Catie does show her the note))

"NO!"

Catie jumped, visibly surprised. She had gotten through her mind wave, and now was wondering if there was something she did wrong. Stephanie looked rather confused so maybe it wasn't entirely coherent... that wouldn't surprise Catie. She had been known to be less than coherent during one of her mind waves.

"No you do not want to do that right now, maybe later but ... ummm... Grace is right now searching the luggage for any dangers or surprises and she has auto-locked all the passengers doors."

Catie blinked, "Isn't that a bit..."

Stephanie continued, "I know! But she has done this before and it has saved our life so trust me on this! If you go up there, they will quickly discover that. No, she is not going anywhere and neither is the Bodyguard. We need to show this to Jon and quickly. Come on, we will go find him and I can fill you in on the events that have occurred recently that may shed some light on this note."

Catie nodded, "Okay. There are other things going on as well then? Somehow, I am not surprised..."

She will go with Stephanie to see if they can locate the potentially elusive and apparently popular-with-the-help Jon.

"I got your note Catie. I take it you have met our Lady in White?"

Catie started to nod, but suddenly caught herself and stopped, "Maybe. I'm not sure what I saw. By that name, she fits the description..." She looked up, "White is a difficult colour."

((Presuming a bit of confusion))

"White doesn't occur very much. Even if you consider what is called white flour, it's not a pure white. Smoke would be an explanation, but to take that particular form and maintain it?" Catie jumps to her feet, her eyes gleaming, "Something I can't explain. It's really intriguing. But, putting aside everything about the 'what', the part that confuses me is 'why'. Why does she appear?"

((Presuming an incomplete answer, along the lines of appearing with warnings or sometimes just appearing))

Catie frowned, "When she appeared to me, she visibly looked worried. She was reaching her hand out, and I almost touched it, but she vanished. Maybe it was a suggestion for me to be particularly careful. I am trying to be, but the situation is not clear, and that lack of knowledge is potentially the most dangerous thing about this situation..."

((Presuming a question about what situation exactly))

Catie folded the fan with a flick of her wrist and crossed her arms, "I can't speak in the definitive, but for Lilianna to make contact with a complete stranger, to trust them more than the people around her, that is incredibly suspicious. The feelings I get from her, her emotions... they don't fit. There's something more to this situation than just needing a private escort. I know we're not supposed to make it our business, but I don't feel like I can just let it go."

((Presuming a 'There is definitely more' and a bit of a synopsis to bring Catie up to date with the others, as well as a 'what contact?'))

Catie blinked then scratched at her cheek, "Somehow... it starts making a bit of sense. Nothing definitive, yet... from the void, an outline of a picture." She shook her head, "Of course, I could be wrong. Anyway, it was a note that the girl passed to me. A note asking for help."

Catie looks Stephanie in the eyes, "If I had to guess... she doesn't willingly want this marriage. That's making a number of assumptions, however, and the only thing I can try to do right now is get more information to get to the bottom of this."

She rubbed her forehead, "Naturally, it might turn out to be that case where it's better not to know, and you can't un-know after you know, but I'd rather find out I'm wrong. Finding evidence to prove correctness or disprove falsehood is a scientist's job."

Catie put the fan away, "Thank you, I just felt like I needed to talk to someone. I'm going to make some tea and take the tray up to the guest quarters. Perhaps I'll find out if I can get some more information that way... providing the means by which to obtain more notes. If not, well, the tea should help calm her nerves a bit. That girl seems so frazzled."

Does anyone have tips when it comes to driving? I don't mean in the sense of the rules, those seem fairly basic or straightforward, but more in terms of things not written down in that small book.

I know the thought of driving actually makes me anxious, and that anxiety is the main reason why I've put off getting a license for so long (effectively I could have applied years ago).

As for a car... if it's big enough to carry the relevant people, and groceries when there are groceries, personally I don't perceive much of a difference between them... but that's me

[Backpost]

When Kyrie had knelt beside the fallen Jargon, she thought she was prepared to help stop the bleeding. Yet, as she had worked hastily, when she pressed the wounds to try to subdue the flow, the blood just kept leaking from the bandages. Something had been done wrong. What was it?

Before she had the opportunity to rectify her mistake, Miguel's energy poured into the fallen horse, and she quickly regained both breath and life. That was good, yet Kyrie couldn't help but feel that she should've been able to stabilize Jargon's wounds. The farmer didn't have too many marketable skills, yet her ability at farming and first aid were things she did feel proud of. If anything, it was just proof that she was still learning. Maybe only an apprentice nurse.

Afterwards, she didn't feel that she had too much to offer the older warrior in terms of encouragement or advice. Frodrick had shown before that he was more than capable of making decisions and stuck with them, and it felt weird trying to find something of that sort of nature to give to someone who had seen more years than her, when she was nearly the youngest in the group.

Kyrie did, however, doubly check on Jargon's health later on, to make sure there didn't appear to be any malign side effects of the water.

* * *

"Blasted weeds." Kyrie's eyes narrowed as she looked back at the shambler chasing the wagon, even as Zeran steered them away. A curious reaction for Kyrie, given her nature, but in her mind, this was round two, and this time, she was (at least a bit) stronger. She drew her shield at the ready, trying to keep herself steady with the wagon's movement. Yet, there was something a bit off about the whole thing. In the first encounter, the shambler had grabbed the wagon. This one made no move to do so. It was just pursuing.

So preoccupied facing the back, trying to keep an eye out for the shamblers or where they might strike from, Kyrie was nearly thrown out when the wagon suddenly turned and they crashed into the riverbank.

If that wasn't enough, the shambler had caught up to them. Heart pounding in her ears, Kyrie raised her shield defiantly, only for the shambler to pass through the entire group. The ringing laughter afterwards brought her hand to meet her forehead.

Yet, it turned out, the situation was different, being as it wasn't just them and their mischievous pursuers.

“Oi!” A female voice cried out from behind them—their behind of course now being steadfastly pointed into rather than away from the river.

“Just what do you think yer doin' coming in here and making a ruckus in my river?!” Floating a short ways upstream was a small creature, humanoid in form, but with green skin and dark green hair. She couldn't have been more than four foot tall, even with most of her body distorted under the water, and she did not look pleased with what she saw.

Miguel's eyes widened. “Hey, d'you know what that is? She's a nixie—a type of fey that live in the water. They usually prefer to live far away from humanoid settlements”

The nixie was not impressed. “Well isn't that just great? Do you think it's any wonder why, ya big mud monkeys!” She flapped a webbed hand at the wagon in a gesture of contempt.

Kyrie rubbed her forehead. On the one hand, it was nice to meet a different kind of these 'fey' that seemed to be mentioned now and then. On the other, this was definitely not the ideal sort of meeting.

Recognizing the fact that they effectively intruded on her home, Kyrie gave a bow towards the Nixie, "Please forgive us. We honestly didn't mean to intrude. We thought we were being chased, but it seems it was just another joke on us, played by some other residents in the forest that seem to have taken an interest in us. You could probably hear their laughing."

That does add some clarification - In my mind I was picturing the scene as her giving an aside to Violet and then Violet's response of 'Huh?' might have warranted a response so I left it open to response, but if she's already moved on, I'll edit my post accordingly

Okay, post edited!

I'm not sure if the squirrels are explicitly staring, but once I realized that Violet was very likely to connect the staring as resulting from her 'wings', she kind of fled. Still open for interaction at her room or on the second floor but she's a bit wary of the two squirrels now.

Catie's plan had to be put into motion. This stage was a delicate stage, one where lack of information was a detriment to potentially everything. But how to get more information... and for that matter, how does one verify the integrity of the information gleamed in such a manner?

She made her way to the galley, preparing herself mentally for what she surmised would happen once she went up to the guest quarters.

Prepare the tea. Offer to him first as a way of acknowledging that he has the right to inspect what is given to his charge. Potential places for additional notes include under the saucer, between the cup and the saucer. Should be sufficient space. Go in, after getting okay, leave the tray. No notes from my end. Interception too high of a probability and cannot be explained.

Suddenly, Catie heard a noise. It was sort of like a venting of gas or air. At the sound she turned around.

There, in the galley was a white figure of a woman wearing a formal dress. She wasn't very clear, more like a ghost than a person. A woman in white that seemed to be looking at Catie with a look of concern and care.

Catie stared, stupefied a the apparition in front of her. While she herself appeared frozen, her mind raced.

Image is unclear, distorted. Optical filter? What is going on? Everything has an explanation. Sound of air. Form does not appear solid, unlikely to have material component. Gaseous component?

Her train of thought broke as she saw the figure reach out her hand as if to touch Catie. Catie found herself raising her own hand as though to accept the gesture, and she wanted to know if there was actually something there to accept. Yet, without warning, the figure simply vanished, as though blown away by a breeze.

No disturbance of the air. Catie noted, quickly assessing the environment around her, and the lack of a sense of wind, or at least what her sense of touch told her, Illusion? Source of illusion. Optics require light. Material?

She stared at her hand briefly, the one she was going to use to accept the hand of the apparition. No trace.

Catie stepped forward a few paces and knelt, exactly where she interpreted that the apparition would have stood. She examined the floor, and the immediate wall nearby, looking for vents or other sources of potential air movement. Nothing immediately caught her eye.

Mundane explanations exhausted. This is something I don't understand. Catie thought in acknowledgement, Therefore, non-mundane explanations cannot be ruled out.

"Hello?" She questioned of the room around her. Catie strained her ears to listen, yet there was no sound.

White ghost. A woman? Where had she heard-

"Wait until you meet our lady in white - that will get you thinking."

Stephanie! She told her about this! Maybe they were acquainted? Now that she actually knew what Stephanie was probably talking about, Catie needed more clarification.

Tea nearly forgotten (Catie put the tray to the side temporarily), Catie backtracks to the infirmary.

Even if I don't get an explanation, and I don't expect one, the way she talked about her, it sounded like she might like to know if that person appeared.

Catie nearly paused midstep.

Wait, is it a person? Insufficient data. Need more information.

Catie didn't see Stephanie at the infirmary. She rubbed her forehead absently. What to do now? Her mind was peaking with questions and the need to talk to someone about it. She could be patient though.

Leaving a short note for Stephanie to let her know when she got back and that she'd be at her room, Catie left the infirmary and returned once more to her quarters. Unpacking a bit more, she retrieved one of her ornamental fans. Taking a breath, she opened it using her thumb and forefinger, sitting on a cushion on the floor in the middle of her room.

Catie closed her eyes, and began to think further on her encounter.

Why appear to me? Not to mention, that didn't look like a greeting. Concern? Why would- Catie paused, I will think of her as a she, because in the event that it is a person, it is more respectful to think of them as one. But why would she be concerned... or rather, what was she concerned about?

Perhaps a warning to tread carefully. Catie surmised, It's the simplest explanation, and so the most likely, but there is the possibility there is something more that was intended.

Catie held the fan in one hand, and felt the contours of the design with the other. Why appear and disappear so abruptly? Is it something that takes a lot of effort? It would make sense, but no way to get data on that.

The more she thought, the more enthralled she became with the idea. It was the first time she had actually seen an apparition. Maybe it was something that could finally help her prove (at least to herself) that there were things still beyond current understanding. That science had not yet explained everything.

That sucks Astrid
One thing I can suggest is that you leave the webpage open, and actually type the post in a separate program (ie notepad). That way when it comes to actually posting, you can login, copy/paste your post and submit right away. Makes it more likely for the post to be successful because if you could log in your connection will probably last a bit. In addition, post failure doesn't lose your writing

Combination of homework and upcoming midterms means slightly reduced post rate

My plans are for Violet to find out what was meant (I just have the impression Violet was never one to actually be a person of interest in that manner, so this is kind of new to her) and depending on how she feels, she'll either see what happens with the other squirrels or shyly avoid them. Currently she's leaning towards the latter.

Afterwards her intent is to get a good sleep then can begin their trek to the quarry with Weldon and the others.

I think I would have to agree on the d2 minimum for those 'basic knowledge' skills - If I think about it in terms of Catie's case in particular, I wouldn't be surprised if there was mandatory courses regarding emergency knowledge of how to pilot/land/etc. Wouldn't be enough to do fancy maneuvers or anything like that, but would be enough to know how to land the ship in an emergency, or emergency jury-rigging to be able to land in the first place.

To add to that... Catie has Eidetic Memory, so she can potentially remember those emergency procedures.

To conclude, it makes sense to me. Maybe even part of the crew manual (Ody, we *do* have a manual for each crew member, right? )
