Post is up... and just in case a bit of a reminder is needed... Alice has a few traits associated to her Taint:

-Her 'Taint wings', a dull, dark, almost oily looking leather bat-esque one, and a bone one
-Her Taint Mark, which is a neon green diamond with a red antique-looking minute hand 'tattoo' on her forehead that turns with the time
-A minor death aura... mainly only insects, flowers, and leaves are affected.

It's good to be back and for this story to continue

Edited my post... so now Alice has finally introduced herself... although Smoke already knew who she was

It's been a while... hasn't it...?

*sighs* I am sorry about my absence... it can be attributed to several things...

I won't use them as excuses... but for the curious, there's two primary ones...

I wasn't completely recovered when I first came back... although I didn't quite recognize it...

I've been a bit captivated with an online game... and so... I've been so intrigued by it that I've neglected my duties here ^^;

Before I go ahead and try to catch up in the various games... please let me know which games I'm in that are still running/open.

... I really need to manage my time a bit better... I'm very sorry if I've worried anyone ^^;

Alice tilts her head, closing her eyes and smiling, "That would be great! Thank you so much. Let's see... she's an inch shorter than me... has long dark hair... which she usually keeps in a long braid... oh! And she likes wearing her kimono... It's dark blue, with a floral pattern... hydrangea flowers and cherry blossom petals... yes... that's it..." She nods to herself twice.

She ponders a moment, tapping her chin thoughtfully, "She likes playing in the park..." Alice giggles, "She's very acrobatic... although she prefers drawing over showing off... oh, but I've never seen her at any of the parks lately..."

Alice smiles, taking Penelope's hand, before habitually waiting, used to being led by her mother or father after they offered their hand in the same manner.

"By the way... my name's Alice." She says lightheartedly.

Thank goodness this thread is one of the ones that my email receives updates for...

Of course I'll still be playing this one... it's just been so long since my last post that I haven't been checking in as often as I would like... that and... well, I'll elaborate further in the thread I'll make in the Coming/Going section...

But yes... I'm here... a blue butterfly isn't the easiest thing to see sometimes... but I'm here... just not as active as I used to be

Subject: IV Probe #5

Stardate: 2368.04.10
USS Discovery, Deck 31 - Science Lab D, 0800

For once, taking the hint that Kate wasn't very talkative at the moment, Allen decided to remain silent during the rest of the short trip in the turbolift from Deck 36 to Deck 31.

When they arrived, they found Rena already in Science Lab D, preparing their positions.

"Thank you," Rena said warmly, "Shion, Gune, Allen, you already know the procedure... but please place the probes at the side of the lab for now. Kate, please place yours next to theirs as well."

After the probes are placed, Rena turned to Kate, "Now, I presume testing will take some time, so you don't have to stay here if there are other things you wish to get a start on, or if you wish to get acquainted with other people. I know it isn't the most interesting thing to watch after all."

(OOC: Pending response from Kate... just assuming it's kind of an 'okay'; after that she can leave the lab whenever she wishes)

"Now, let's see here..." Rena turned to the lined up probes, taking a handheld reader and scanning them. When she reached the second one, she nodded, "That one is registered as probe #5, so please put it in the test chamber, Allen."

"Gotcha." He replied, quickly doing so. In the meantime, Shion and Gune took up positions behind opposite computer terminals, while Rena stood to the side, monitoring their progress. Finally, Allen went to a third terminal adjacent to one by Rena. There was a soft sound of sliding metal as Rena's visor slid into place, blocking view of her eyes as she prepared to take notes.

"Alright," Rena said, "Gune, Shion, you know what to do."

Gune nodded several times, "Yes yes..." He quickly began typing on the computer, muttering as he went, "Initialize the waves with a multicentric force... multiplied by the limbic perimeter algorithm..."

Shion also said aloud what she was doing, but in contrast to Gune, it was in more understandable terms, "Initiating artificial vacuum... commencing startup sequence... requesting access to the encephalon core... partition online, A-LINE protocol in effect... activating quasi-reality projection simulators."

Rena nodded, murmuring to herself, "EMF force fields and encephalon projector online..." She turned to Allen, "Allen, how are the sensor readings?"

Allen checked his terminal, before reporting, "I've activated the probe now... The systems appear normal; no malfunctions detected."

"Right, Shion, let's start from the beginning with the level 100 processes." Rena instructed.

"Roger," Shion replied, "Beginning with particle detection test; simulating alpha radiation at 300ppsm."

Although nothing was readily visible within the test chamber, bright sparks of light suddenly appeared along the walls of the chamber.

"Yes yes... the field is holding at full integrity." Gune reported.

"The sensors are fluctuating between reading 298 and 303 ppsm." Allen quickly said.

"A small margin of error, as to be expected." Rena replied, "Recalibrate the sensor array."

"Calibration complete," Allen reported, "Now reading 300ppsm, static."

After a few more successful tests for particle detection, Rena turned her attention to thermal readings.

"Increase the temperature by a rate of a fiftieth of a degree Kelvin, Shion, until Allen says there's a change in the temperature reading." Rena instructed.

"Do we need to be that precise?" Allen asked, raising an eyebrow.

"Not in our field readings," Rena explained, "But for testing purposes, it helps to identify the margin of error and accuracy of the thermal sensor array."

After a moment, Allen said, "Temperature change detected at half a degree difference." He turned to Rena, "Shouldn't it be better than that?"

Rena shook her head, "It isn't necessary for this class of probe... stellar thermal readings aren't required to be so precise, because of the magnitude of their thermal energy to begin with."

After at least an hour, during which time the probe was also tested for its resiliency and sensor readings of solar wind and flares, Rena finally called a halt to the routine.

"Alright, I think that should be enough." Rena said, "Do a complete shutdown of the encephalon core, then deactivate the EMF force field..."

One down, three to go... Rena thought to herself.

The droplet of water slipped away
The eleventh hour passed that day
There was no hope with which to wait
The damage done was simply too great
Sorrow cannot be expressed in word's confine
Nor in passive faces such as mine
Now another life is at its last bed
The eternal rest of the dead
In its place stands a void
That hollow feeling we can't avoid
Nothing will be able to take the place
Of that person I will never again face

... on a different note, I am not back yet; I'm at my grandparent's in the country, so my access is limited at best

I may be back soon, but I may still need more time... I'm not the most stable right now, because of a slew of things... I don't wish to elaborate further.

Notice to all games of which I am a part of... I will be unable to post until further notice.

As far as I know offhand, these are the affected games:
The Auguries of Destruction series
Witchcraft: Stare into the Night
Star Wars: Dawn of Defiance
Star Trek: No Good Deed

I am uncertain when I will be able to post again...

My grandfather is close to death's domain, if he hasn't already passed away... My immediate family and I are flying out tomorrow, hence the suddenness of this... I do apologize in advance...

The girl giggled, as one would giggle if they knew where the cookie jar was hidden. "But I'll be alright... I know some people are mean... but all I have to do is tell them to go away like my mom said... I tell them to go away, and they go away... well, they fall down anyway... but they don't hurt me anymore."

Alice smiled brightly, without a care in the world, before suddenly she stopped, as a thought struck her, "Oh, but you can come with me... I could use some help, and I trust you... I'm looking for my friend..."

Her eyes widened slightly, very much as the pleading young girl she was, "Will you help me? Please? I don't know where Jen is..."

I was kind of waiting on a post that would have someone yell 'close the doors!', since from the ops room, Karra can't quite tell when the right time to do so is. She could probably see on the monitors, yes, but she's not quite a tactics person, and the 'front line' would have a better judgment call on it...

As for the game itself... I want to continue with Karra...

By the way... Gina-chan... is that lightsaber you picked up red?

From outside the ops room, Karra could hear the sounds of continuing battle, but there was something else as well. It was hard for her to describe, something like an ominous pressure exerting itself upon her mind, bringing with it a sense of foreboding. Something wasn't right out there... but she hadn't been told yet to close the door, something she was waiting for. However, as the presence she felt moved closer, she knew she shouldn't take any chances.

"Close the doors..." She said to herself, as she activated the same functions within the terminal.

Ruea stepped out of the turbolift. It was rare that she left the cetacean quarters, but she did have a habit of playing in the holodeck.

This way, She added to herself, I do have an excuse that I lost track of time, and so missed the appointment... why Rena thinks I need counselling, I don't know, since if I do, then she does too.

It was almost her own program, rather unique considering its specifications and content, and she did feel a bit self conscious carrying her prop. Slung over her shoulder was what appeared to be a short staff of some sort, seemingly made from woven branches. On one end, the branches took on a blue, translucent tone, bent and gently holding an aquamarine gemstone, while on the other end, the branches appeared to be frosted over, and held another aquamarine stone. Yet, as she headed down the hall, she heard the sound of approaching footsteps.

"Oh! Commander!" She said in surprise, honestly not expecting a higher officer on the deck. Yet, as she looked at Callie, her eyes immediately were drawn to her still wet hair.

Taking an educated guess, but still a guess, Ruea quickly composed herself and added, "Um, I didn't know you swim..."

Stardate: 2368.04.10
USS Discovery, Deck 7, PO2 Ruea Nami's Quarters – 0945

If one entered Ruea's quarters, they would immediately wonder if they had stumbled into a water reservoir, just from the sounds within. A wide fish tank lined one wall, on top of a chest of drawers, while miniature fountains were placed sporadically around the room, yet seemingly in such a manner that gave the room a very tranquil feeling. Ruea's blue hair was all that was visible, as she lay beneath the covers of her bed.

Ruea awoke to thunder. She blinked sleepily, glancing upwards, her blue eyes half expecting to see the sky covered with clouds, smiling with the promise of rain... instead, they saw the normal ceiling that lined most people's quarters. The thunder was just the alarm she had set. She sighed, and slowly got to her feet. The first thing she did was wander over to her aquarium, and looked at the fish inside.

"Good morning." She said gently, her hand reaching for the fish food shaker in the drawer under the tank, "Did you all sleep well?"

She chuckled as she felt the response. No, they didn't sleep that well, because Plecky must've been doing her routine tank clean, and kept waking them up.

"Oh well, you can always take a nap later." She told them, "Time for some breakfast, and Gus, I expect you to share this time." She chided, much as a mother would chide their child, gently, but firmly.

With a couple shakes, she watched the flakes of food sink from the surface of the water, to be quickly snatched and gobbled up by the fish inside.

"You'd think I haven't fed you for a whole day, the way you all eat so fast." Ruea giggled.

Within a short amount of time, half an hour, Ruea got herself ready for the day, and left her quarters. It was only a short walk to her destination, the cetacean tanks.

"Good morning." She said, and was immediately welcomed by Merrows swimming up to the transparent metal. The dolphin chirped excitedly, twirling around in the water, and Ruea couldn't help but laugh.

"I know, I know," She replied, "But I need to sleep now and then too, you know. Just give me a moment."

Then she heard Aqua. A mellow call, soft and loud at the same time.

"It's okay; I don't mind. I'm a bit impatient myself, to be honest." Ruea replied.

With a quick change, Ruea swapped her uniform for diving gear, and plunged into the tank. Merrows was already there, and nudged her gently as she entered. Taking a brush from her belt, Ruea began washing her friend. She knew that the waters were sanitized, filtered and so forth, but there really was no replacement for actual, physical care...

A chill shivering in the air,
Without time for even a prayer,
Upon end, the hairs do stand,
The orchestra of fear's band.
Even though gone, the feeling will stay,
For Death has come and gone this day.

The twin rivers flow and mourn,
And the wrong winds sound as scorn.
Even the mountains will face their plight,
As sorrow and anger within them fight.
Yet in the end, after everyone has their say,
There is one less life in one's world today.

Karra had lingered, too long, with Ithiria, to check for any possible reactions to the medicine she had given her. Thankfully, there were none, but inside there was something nagging at her. Only too late did she realize what it actually was.

She heard the shot from Haiko'ib's gun, and she clenched her teeth. He wasn't at 100%, and she hadn't even treated him yet. She turned, and saw him, too far away, too far to reach for a swift injection... but perhaps there was something else she could do instead. Her feline eyes swept across her surroundings, coming to a halt at the open door to the operations room.

Maybe there's something I can do in there... She thought, before running inside, heading to a computer terminal.

(OOC: If she's able to access the computer's controls, she'll try to lock any blast doors to the hangar, or just the entrance doors in general)

I see no wrench; there is no wrench to see.
It's just fantasy reality made to be.
Tightening the bolts to block your way,

Other ways are clear, that is true.
But be careful where you tread,
Otherwise, you may just end up dead.

Harold crossed his arms, lost in thought for a moment, "Alright, presuming there's no more input on the matter, it's just about doing what we can for the moment. Susan, Sarah and I will stay in the building; that way we can be easily contacted should something come up. Also, since the building is close to the centre of the city, that means I can head anywhere in decent time, should the need arise."

Susan, however, stood up, yawning, "Actually... I'm thinking of heading home right now; I just took a night shift, so I'm kind of exhausted."

Sarah giggled, "Since when do you take night shifts? Oh well, at least you won't be doing any of your stunts on the communications lines."

Susan winked, "You never know, sis. Perhaps soon you'll actually take a day off. Anyway, see you all later, or next week, whichever comes first."

With that, Susan took her handbag and left the conference room.

Harold shook his head, "Well, back to the matter at hand... I don't think there's any need to be cautious around the Masamune family, but when a witch is involved, you never know... hey, Sarah, if Mr. Masamune was on the Witch list, wouldn't that make his daughter-"

"That's correct, she's a Seed." Sarah replied, "But I doubt we need to investigate her... she's too young to have awakened, much less to have developed her abilities."

"I see." Harold murmured, "Anyway, my intuition tells me the killer's not in the same area, but stay alert, as always."

(Leaving room for further discussion, otherwise...)

~~~
The trip to the Masamune family's house is uneventful, apart from some of the lingering morning rush hour visible on the other side of the street heading into the downtown core. The house itself seems to have been built, or at least renovated, by Mr. Masamune's family, with distinct Asian tones added to the house, such as the style of the roof and gutters, the colour palette chosen, and the style of the visible drapes along the windows...
(So then, who knocks on the door, and what will be their greeting when it's answered by Mrs. Masamune?)
Topic: The Day They Woke Up on the Wrong Side of Reality
Subject: ... Foolishness of the Blind
"It's not just small," Galen murmured, "It's moving through what could very well be land the beast considers its territory, and if it is active during the day, which we do not know, it could be on patrol... moving things are more prone to catch the predator's eye, because if something runs, then it's usually prey. That's why running is among the worst things one can do when faced with one."
"As for you..." Galen said, his eyes shifting towards Jeremy, "You are treading dangerous grounds with those thoughts. You are human. Quite bluntly, you will not be able to protect everyone you meet. Nor will everyone want you to. Don't expect it of yourself, and charge recklessly into every encounter with your ever-so-noble intentions. Firstly, it is a very good way to get yourself killed, and if you are dead, how will you protect others then? Secondly, by doing so you forget your original intent. People will not employ wanton do-gooders with overtly noble intentions for that reason: they forget where they have placed their original commitment. Finally, there is the flip-side as well. If you are so concerned with the value of life, then what of the life of the beast? Does its killing warrant its own death? It lives the only way it knows how, by surviving, by hunting, just as we live the only way we know how, by surviving, hunting and gathering. Only immortals or creatures of immense lifespans are different, since they have more time to reflect and do other things, but they still must be prepared to defend themselves for their survival."
"The last thing to consider is, what's the big deal of 'tasting human flesh'?" Galen asked, rolling his eyes, "Would you just think for a moment? This isn't some sort of fictitious story. Humans are rather bony creatures. They're not truly appealing to a predator, but a predator will take what's available to them. A sheep on the other hand is much meatier. If it only hunted humans, or hunted them at a much higher ratio, then I would be more concerned. As it is, in the past it has shown to be satisfied with sheep. It draws closer to the town, but you're attributing that as a growing interest in humans. I attribute it to the fact that the sheep are likely straying less and less away from the town, although there is a possibility in the former also being true to a degree. Perhaps I'm thinking too much, but clearly you're not thinking nearly enough."
"Oh, actually, there is one last thing," Rena said after the leaving Kate, "It's just a personal preference of mine, but if you wish to call me by a gender term, I would prefer ma'am over sir. However, it's not very important, so I won't mind either term."
(One side note: Rena's visor doesn't cover her eyes unless it's active, which it isn't here... just making sure you know )
USS Discovery - Deck 39, Storage Bay C
Reaching the deck, Kate can hear a debate between three individuals within one of the storage bays.
"Allen, there's just no way you can take two of the probes at one time!" A woman could be heard saying.
"Don't worry, I've got these!" A man, probably Allen, replied.
"The boy seems to need to take a nap," An older sounding man mused, "Yes, yes... then he'll start thinking straight."
"That's uncalled for! I've got these! WHOA!"
There is a crash from the bay.
(OOC: The following is under the presumption that Kate enters)
As Kate enters, she sees Allen underneath what appear to be more like a pair of missiles than anything else.
The woman, Shion, gave an exasperated sigh, "Well, at least your fall cushioned the probes..."
Allen, shakily standing up, quickly noticed Kate, "Oh? Are you the new recruit? What are you doing here?"
"I was instructed to help you by Lieutenant Rena," Kate smiled at him.
Shion smiled, "That's good... otherwise Allen's liable make a fool of himself again. Anyway, I'm Shion Uzuki, Lt. Leiran's assistant. It's nice to meet you."
The older man, bald and on the shorter side, seemed to be lost in his own thoughts, murmuring aloud softly, on the quicker side, "Yes, yes, four people, four probes, we should be able to make Leiran's deadline." He then spoke up, walking over and shaking Kate's hand, "Hello, hello, I'm Gune, Gune Foreman. You take the probe, yes? Take it like this." He quickly demonstrated by taking one of the probes from Allen, holding it carefully but firmly, easily positioning himself so that it's easy to see where he's holding it.
Allen in the meantime staggered to his feet, grinning sheepishly, "Heh, well, I guess you know already, but I'm Allen Ridley."
(OOC: If Kate has any input here, or has things to say above that could change what's said, I can edit and post as such the following is for when it's time to take the probes up to the lab)
Carefully, he handed both Shion and Kate a probe each, before taking his own. It was easily found that with the probes, only three people at maximum would be able to fit in a lift, so Allen opted to go in the lift with Kate. In the lift, Allen attempted to bring up conversation.
"You're pretty new, right? How are you taking everything in so far?" He asked.
