Subject: Potential Threat

Riina nearly hisses as the night breeze wafts the scent of gunpowder to her nostrils. It is a despicable scent, and one she had only smelt once before. It is dry, and raspy, not unlike the burnt ashes left behind by a fire. Oh yes, Riina would not forget that one day where she smelt both the powder and seen the destruction that had definitely followed.

It was a warm day, despite the clouds in the sky, as Riina carefully wandered through a plain, keeping below the height of the grass, staying hidden. There was a column of smoke in the sky that arose from a distant place, and Riina went to verify its cause. It was the burning remnants of an outpost, with only two walls still intact. Clearly, some sort of battle had taken place, and there were still bodies lying around, goblin and human mostly. The small fort was evidently being defended by the human forces, while the goblins attacked. A select few of the goblin bodies lying there were carrying tiny barrels of a black powder, some of which was spilt from most of the barrels. Its unmistakeable scent was engrained within Riina's mind since that day, but she was not sure that such an apparently simple thing could cause that much damage. She had taken a very small sample, and placed it nearby. With the flint and steel she had, she caused a spark, and the powder instantly reacted, swiftly burning in an instant with a notable 'pop' sound. Riina shook her head. A substance that can only bring about death and destruction has no place on this world. She thought solemnly.

Riina's eyes narrow. That powder could only bring about destruction and pain. Quickly, she looks around for the source of the smell, and finds it: one of the barrels propped beside one of the tents. Beside that barrel are a couple blood-red sticks, with a line of string coming out of it. Riina instinctively guesses that they too would hold the same properties as that black powder or maybe even that powder itself, with an added timer that would let it be lit for several moments before it exploded. They are weapons, dangerous ones, yet, Riina wondered, could they be used against the user? Riina shakes her head quickly; no, that would have to be a last minute resort, since she would not be able to estimate the amount of damage it would cause.

Linnix lets out a groan; apparently she did not go far enough away from the campsite. Sleepily she walks back up to the campsite, rubbing her eyes.

"You know, a couple of us are trying to get some sleep here!" Linnix half yells at Kas, her eyes still mostly closed.

Then the words sunk in, but Linnix was a bit beyond caring, "So, just because they couldn't be bothered to wait for the morrow..." Linnix says, slightly shaking.

"Besides, what do you expect me to do?" Linnix continues incredulously, glaring at Kas, "Suddenly grow wings so I can fly across that hole, be strong enough to carry Artanis' body, and fly all the way back here? I think not. I don't even want to see if I can get across that hole."

Linnix yawns, "If they got themselves into whatever it is they got themselves into, then they can probably get themselves out of it. In any case, I doubt I'd be of any help, why don't you go, Xaris?"

Linnix turns her back, and wanders off to find yet another different secluded place to sleep, "Have fun." she says in farewell, waving.

At the next place, which turns out to be just off to the side of the clearing Aelistae is sleeping in, Linnix just slumps to the ground, her back leaning against a tree, and she falls asleep.

Subject: Feeling

Riina felt the other one calm down, then disappear after a couple words. She felt his resolve, then his understanding, then his fear, but shared none of them. There were still a couple of things that had to be done at some point. Riina knew that she still had to try to determine the goblin group's intentions regarding the forest. So far, no sign had been shown, so either they were hiding it well, or they weren't interested in the forest itself. It was likely the latter, but Riina did not like to take chances.

Her adept eyes did another quick glance over the camp, seeing if there was any sort of hint that would show anything. They were trained to be good predators, but that didn't mean they didn't have other things to do as well. She specifically looks for things she's seen among woodcutters: those serrated saw blades, or keen logging axes.

She knew she couldn't afford staying in one spot for long; a predator that has caught the scent (or seen the torchlight in this case) of a different prey would be sure to be searching. Catiously, she moves around the camp, keeping a safe distance, and ensuring she wouldn't be seen or heard.

(OOC: Riina wouldn't know if the goblins had set up any traps or not, so she immediately would assume so, and so takes care in relocating)

Linnix nearly slams her head against the outside of the cave as she just about jumps up from her sitting position. Her eyes are wide as she looks around at the sky, searching for the thunderstorm. After a moment, seeing there are no real dark masses of clouds in the sky, it dawns on Linnix that the sound resonated from inside the cave.

Linnix was not amused. She wanted to rest, but that noise had jolted her body with adrenaline, and she was now wide awake.

"Ugh, what a bother." She murmurs angrily, standing up.

She was not in the mood to enter the cave, and she slowly assumed that it was because Loriel had set off a loud trap or something... It was like a clap of thunder though, and Linnix didn't know any sort of trap that used it - wait, what else was electrically that she had seen before? Linnix crosses her arms as she thinks about the humming crystals in that shield Artanis wielded. Well, that shield was almost fully charged, with seven of the eight gems lit on it, perhaps Artanis had Elesia identify her shield and she used it to unleash its power on some group of enemies they found. Linnix nodded to herself; that made sense.

Satisfied with her thought up explanation, Linnix wanders a bit further out, so she wasn't in range of that calamitous noise. She leans against a tree and slowly sets herself on the ground. After a moment, the adrenaline in her body fades, and she felt as relaxed as before. Bringing herself to a similar position as before, Linnix falls asleep.

Well, if you include your familiar, that'd be 17-3, and then with Brianna and the other elf, that'd be 17-5... so nearly 3 to 1, but still not all that good; hardly how a proper rescue would be... but then again, that's probably me being picky...

Anyway... I guess I'd better get to figuring out my post ^-^

BTW... what was the weather like recently? Rainy, sunny, hot, windy? (That'll also determine how much Riina is worried about a forest fire)

Riina sniffs, and slowly, hesitantly, she replies in Sylvan, "Do you not know the anger of the hawk that has missed the agile rabbit? Do you not know the fury of the tiger that has been wounded by its would-be prey? Have you not felt your own irritation or anger when the perfect hunt fails? So are those goblins the predators, and those elves their caught prey. One does not take the meat from the lion's mouth lest they face the wrath of it, and their entire pride. Those goblins have felt victory and success, at what cost, we cannot know, and they will not suffer to let that be spoiled. They will pursue, like any predator would, and like the enraged bear, they will not care about bringing destruction in their wake."

Riina now stares at the goblin's bonfire, its flickering light reflecting in her eyes, "However, unlike the creatures of the wild, they can use fire. A torch dropped in haste or even by accident, or even one caught in the foliage; that is all it would take. Fire spreads on a whim, often aided by wind and dry earth. A fire so started easily grows beyond our control..." Riina's voice fades, as an afterthought, she adds, "I think you're overestimating your capabilities, and underestimating your opponents. They will not want to return to where they came from empty handed, and in the case you are successful, if they take considerable loss in numbers, enough to deem you a threat, and they return to inform the rest of them, they will want to take action to remove that threat."

Linnix sees the stranger intrude upon Aelistae's wonderful dance, and nearly draws her crossbow to fend off the intruder, but it appeared Aelistae knew them, so she let them be. After a moment, whereby they exchange kisses and words, Linnix smiles and wonders, are they lovers? She almost felt a bit ashamed, since now it was as though she were the one intruding upon them. Still smiling, she looks towards the horizon.

Linnix's eyes grow distant as she watches the far off dusk, and her smile fades. She thinks to the events of this day. She still couldn't quite believe that she had agreed to go on this quest in the first place. *sigh* What was I thinking? She thinks solemnly, The others are here to help our patron, I too, but for a price. It would be silly not to expect a price, even if it isn't shown right away, and yet, the others don't seem to care about that.

Linnix brings her knees to her chest, and rests her arms upon them. I don't belong here... so why am I here? She wonders. Her head slowly falls forward to rest on her arms, and her eyes slowly close, as she drifts into slumber. Very little crosses her mind as she slips away, but the mare of the night slowly stirred to follow.

Riina says nothing, looking beyond to where the goblin camp was. She had given up on listening to the other one, and so set about counting goblins. Still, it bothered her. She knew she would be different, having not been raised in a killoren culture, but she didn't think it'd be this different. She shakes her head of the thought, and returns to goblin counting. If any one of them got away, there would be sure to be retaliation. Even if she managed to take out all the ones that escaped, there was still the threat of retaliation just from the lack of response their base would receive.

Then Riina looks over to where the two captives are. She looks them over swiftly, hardly stopping in her survey. She had trained herself for the case that she'd end up in a conflict with goblins, but she'd never have imagined this situation.

(OOC: Riina will try to get a count of all the goblins in the campsite, surveying thrice over in order to ensure an accurate count, and at the same time perhaps see if there is a way to get to the captives unseen, because it's one thing if prisoners just seem to get lucky and escape, and another if there is an offensive rescue attempt)

Riina doesn't respond, as though she was the one asked to stay quiet rather than the wolf. She just can't respond. She is too shocked; she cannot believe what she is hearing. You're of the same people, the same race, and yet, you couldn't be much more different...

Riina averts her eyes. She was taught that no race was worth more or superior in the world's sight. A life is a life; a bird, a goblin, a dryad, a killoren, it mattered not. All were equally blessed by the world, and all were connected in the plight for survival. It is a balance. Yet, it was easily threatened... As she thinks, her eyes flicker between blue, green, and black, finally settling on a dark green.

"Do what you will." Riina finally says simply in Sylvan, her voice gentle, but with a tone of resignation, "I will clean up after you."

Subject: The Drawbacks of Eternity

Eternity is nice, because you actually have time, but at the same time you have too much of it, and so time loses meaning for you. That said, however, with eternity, there is the possibility you could learn many things, above all being contentment with oneself. Yet, as soon as you have achieved it, since you have eternity, it too loses its meaning over time (say a couple hundred years, which isn't that much with eternity).

So, in the end, it is far better to have something with a beginning, and end. It is part of what being alive is about, pushing your limits to surpass the moment and even what is referred to as human nature. To grow and learn, but above all to learn to be happy with what you have, or, if that isn't possible, find out how to change what you can, usually yourself, so that it is possible, without hurting others who are just trying to achieve the same thing.

EDIT: Oh dear, I was working on this at the same time Kuriosaki posted. I have to go to bed right now, but I'll respond to Kuriosaki's too tomorrow, so my post is still valid.

EDIT2: I'd go with rediscovering the wonder of being little. Rediscovering the world would be thrilling. Reliving my childhood... that I don't want to do.

Choose one, or choose the other, but choose carefully:
1) Know how to travel through time and have the means to do so, however it is only for you; you cannot bring any other living thing.

2) Have the ability to blur the distinction between reality and fantasy. (basically, you are a key by which fantasy can be realized as reality, in an area the size of a house around you)

Subject: Must is Such an Absolute Word

"Must?" Riina repeats softly, testing the foreign word.

It was a word she had seldom heard from Xera, but it seemed to be popular among the travellers she came across, especially ones involved in the war. It was so obvious if they were, since they'd sometimes work themselves up to increase their morale, using that word in many of their sentences. Still, goblins this close to the forest? Riina wonders, Hmm, I'll have to make sure they don't have any intentions to enter.

The other one mentioned captives, but Riina didn't seem to notice, thinking about the foreign word 'must'. He was quick to move off, and judging from his action of drawing a weapon, it was quite clear what he intended to do. Riina sighs, If he draws attention to the forest, and more goblins come and eventually overrun it, more than three, what was it? Elven? Well, more than that would be lost. She thought solemnly. She didn't have a duty to aid travellers, even if she was a wanderer herself, but she did have a bit of an obligation to the forest, to her guardian Xera. Shaking her head, she moves without a sound, seeming to follow the other one. Many hasty travellers, she noted, seemed to be quite stubborn as well, so she sighed again as she realized she likely wouldn't be able to sway the other one from stopping.

"I do hope that you intend to be thorough in what you intend to do." Riina's gentle voice carries in Sylvan, her preferred language, with a hint of disdain, "If you're not, I'll have to clean up after you, and if we're both not able to, even working together, I won't forgive you." She says simply, just barely hinting at the bigger picture as she draws her own bow.

Linnix nods solemnly, "It's alright, if you can't explain, then you don't have to try. Just please remember, I am here if you need to talk; you're the one who said 'a trouble shared is a trouble halved', so try not to keep everything inside."

Even as she says those words, Linnix knows they are as directed towards Aelistae as they are to herself, but there just didn't seem to be any time for it for her. Linnix turns back to the lock, and with a smooth click, it unlocks, with the footsteps of the others already slightly faded. With a last check over the chest, Linnix opens it. From within, she pulls out a dusty pendant of a horse-headed humanoid figure.

"I like jewellery, but not when it's ugly." Linnix says casually, stuffing it in her pack negligently (to throw it onto the pile of treasure later).

While her hand is in her pack, she feels for the money pouch she picked up earlier, and reaches within. She feels the coins, and grabs a handful, but also feels a smooth object against her hand. Reaching a bit further, she manages to grab the opal along with the coins.

"Here," Linnix says, holding out her hand, "I don't know if that's half, but we can look at it later and check if you want to; I had found more than a sword back where the spider was."

(let's see, a random handful of coins would be... umm, maybe 13gp and 1sp? I'm not sure, you decide Kaelyn )

* * *

[Later]

Linnix sneaks the pendant onto the treasure pile when (hopefully) no one is looking, and then afterwards walks over to the side of the group and sits, slightly at a loss of what to do. She watches Aelistae exit the cave, and thinks of following, but decides not to. Aelistae likely wanted some time to herself, and so she would respect that. Without thinking, Linnix stretches her arms, and then winces as the pain to her shoulder blade returns. She definately jarred it hard in that fall earlier. Just then, Loriel spoke up about wanting to venture back in.

"Are you out of your mind?" Linnix asks, "First off, did you see the bridge fall into that hole that now blocks the way in or out of those ruins? How are you going to get back across that? Not to mention, if you do find them, presuming they actually are there, how can you get THEM across that hole as well? Secondly, there are no real coincidences when two opposing forces are involved. Face the facts: our patron was attacked soon after our entrance, we run into a series of traps including one whereby the one we're supposed to be helping attacks methodically and a few people nearly die, and you have the nerve to say that wasn't an elaborate trap?! Not to mention this after being duped by something so elaborate as an illusion no less, with that false river and bridge, or have you forgotten about that?"

Linnix takes in a large breath, and nearly continues her rant, but decides that was enough. She had actually stood up and advanced on Loriel at the outrageous idea. Linnix shakes her head, and turns her back. It was bad enough earlier when Loriel had first spoken against their patron, but now she had the nerve to suggest this notion as well. This didn't bode well, and yet, Linnix now knew it wasn't going to get better. She had resolved to talk with Loriel earlier, but it seemed that it wouldn't solve anything. Without another note, Linnix left the cave entrance, careful to not be too loud, in case she disturbed Aelistae, but when she came out, she could see it wasn't necessary. Aelistae was in the midst of a beautiful dance, and how pretty it was. Linnix sits just past to the side to the cave entrance and smiles sadly, perhaps another time, another life, she would have learned how as well.

Riina had walked solemnly for several hours. Her eyes were clouded and distant as she walked, and she wasn't really paying attention; she never would have used a torch otherwise, or used the path for that matter. The dark sky above could've easily reflected the dreams Riina has had, and perhaps that was why she was so lost in thought. Did she really want to find her parents? They had left her when she was born, and she was already an adult. But still, maybe they intended to return... Suddenly she is jolted to reality by what seems to be another traveller.

"Quickly!" he said, with an urgency in his voice, "You must douse the torch and follow me! These roads are not safe on this eve."

The message quickly got her attention. Wordlessly she put the torch out, and disappeared into the foliage of the trees, to come up beside the traveler. Her bare feet hardly made a sound on the ground, and her presence seemed to even make the leaves stay still for her. Looking into a pair of eyes not unlike her own green ones, her gaze looks beyond the other killoren's eyes, and into their soul. Seeing trustworthiness, she averts her gaze, and then avoids eye contact. She hasn't even been around other killoren, in being raised by Xera, and so her shyness even showed here.

"What is it?" She asks, her gentle voice almost hidden by the night breeze.

Now that Riina is closer, you can see that she has long, roughly cut dark green hair, dark brown skin, and dark green eyes. If you weren't a killoren as well, you could've mistaken her for a dryad. Holding her hair out of the way of her eyes is a simple yet elegantly carved wooden circlet, and she wears a leaf green cloak. On her back is a backpack, a bow and quiver and a strangely carved quarterstaff. This quarterstaff has broad, flat ends that angle into points, with what could be a handle in the middle. In essence, it is a wooden two bladed sword. At her side is a simple sheath holding a longsword.

Linnix examined the wooden chest. The lock seemed simple enough, but there was something nagging at her, the feeling that something was wrong. Finally, she found it. She smiles as she disarms the trap; good thing no one else tried to open it. Yet, even as her lock picks clink in the chest's lock, she hesitates.

"Aelistae," Linnix begins quietly so that only Aelistae would hear, the metallic clinking aiding to mask her speech, "After that last battle, it looked as though you were holding your blade differently from when you fought that spider... it seemed like there was something wrong."

Linnix glances over at Aelistae, catching her eyes with her own, "If there is something, did you want to talk about it?"

The sound of metal clinking against metal echoes gently up the hallway after the others, concealing the concern hidden within.

Linnix would be more likely to ask Aelistae for a couple of reasons. One, Xaris is more of a fighter-type person, and so if there was something happening outside, it'd be better if he was there. Also, Linnix would still want to talk and see what was wrong, and finally, it'd give her a chance to split the one money pouch between them.

Or am I just being too picky?

The elven woman continues searching around the city, but surprisingly enough, there isn't any adequate place for her to work. Most of the metalwork places are specifically to work weapons or armour, with tools and setups too blunt for the elegance and beauty required of jewellery making. She sighs, there was nothing for it; she'd have to make the tiara later.

There was something else though, she had chanced a glimpse behind her and saw one of the ones she had seen the previous day. Hehehe, good thing he won't recognize me, even if he saw me in my real form She thought, and couldn't help but be amused. Her spell that allowed her to assume an elven form was potent, and many people that saw both this elven form and her real form would not be able to tell, that is, if they ever got to see her real form.

Well, I suppose there's nothing else I have to do in this form she thinks, turning in an alley. A slight surprise flickers over her face for a brief instant as she sees the same person. That's inconvenient she thought, I'll have to go elsewhere. Continuing along her path as though nothing was wrong, she cheerfully waves to the other person as any commoner would, passing them by, with all apparent intent to continue onto a different road, pretending to continue her search.

Subject: Slight Snakephobia... or whatever it is called

As soon as Xaris kicks open the box, a pair of serpantine eyes seems to glare right at Linnix. Linnix quickly gives a startled gasp, recoils and nearly falls backwards onto the floor before she realizes that the snake wasn't alive. Breathing a sigh of relief, Linnix quickly recovers, looking around sheepishly.

"Sorry," She says, blushing a bit, "I always get a bit startled by snakes."

Linnix glares at the snake dagger, staring in its eyes. There is no way I am taking that thing she thinks to herself. The golden and silvery shininess in the box with the dagger, however, puts a grin on Linnix's face. Well, it wasn't going anywhere at the moment, so Linnix decided to look around for other things. Well, a good place to start would be to search their fallen enemies.

Linnix walks towards the fallen woman, and takes Kas' spear roughly out of her body, not careful to do as little damage as possible. She leaves the spear on the ground, and searches through the woman's pack. She immediately takes the bolts, knowing she'll need the ammunition, and also pulls out a hand crossbow similar to her own. Linnix stands up, and pulls out her own for reference. The new crossbow's general appearance is the same, but Linnix is amazed to see the quality of it. The curvature and design of the bow is far superior to the similar bow on Linnix's. Linnix checks the firing mechanism, and yes, it is simple like her own crossbow's, but it is just that much better. Even the wood was a better grain and had a nicer finish. There was no question about it, Linnix would definately take this.

Stowing her new weapon in the spot where her old one was kept, Linnix still decides to keep her old hand crossbow, and puts it in her pack. Linnix returns to looking through the woman's other items, placing them neatly on the floor, even if they weren't really in any sort of order. Taking the money pouch, Linnix then takes everything of value and puts it by the steel box. Moving on to the ogre, Linnix nearly misses the shiny glint coming from its tusk. Slipping the ring off quickly, Linnix likewise grabs its money pouch and puts it on the pile of things. The axe... Linnix wasn't even sure if she could lift such a massive thing. She finally takes Kas's spear and puts it to the side of the pile.

"There, that's every-" Linnix begins, but pauses, eyeing the wall hangings suspiciously.

She remembered that people sometimes liked to hide things behind wall pictures, but was it only limited to pictures? Linnix quickly ran to the nearest one and looked behind it. Nothing. Next one! Nothing. OK, how about this one? Nope, nothing. Glaring at the walls for defying her, Linnix nearly rips the next one off the wall. This one hid a ladder. Well, better than nothing Linnix thinks a bit sourly, taking it and putting it by the other things. A second ladder was quickly found afterwards, and likewise placed. Finally, there was actually a small recess in one of the walls, only noticeable by the light entering it. Linnix slides the stone cover to the side, revealing a little cupboard-like thing. Grabbing the rope, the lamps and oil impatiently, Linnix dumps them by the rest of the stuff.

"OK." Linnix says, "NOW, that's everything."

Linnix eyes the pile of relatively unorganized stuff, although, she didn't pile it so messily that you couldn't take a single glance and be able to see everything in it. This was about the way Linnix always organized stuff, just like how her room was, when she had a room.

[OOC: I know I'm making Linnix find everything, but everyone else seems a bit busy, and this way we don't have to go through several posts finding things, everyone can see what there is and RP who wants what or plan what to do about the broken floor, and at least she didn't take everything ]
