Are you sure that you can trip for an AoO? I thought you're only allowed a melee attack (pg 137 makes it appear that way anyway).

Just wondering because that'd be good to know if you can do things other than attack on an AoO... now off to school...

If the person was unarmed, how could they take an attack of opportunity? I don't think you're allowed to follow through an attack of opportunity if the response would provoke one as well (which an unarmed strike or trip attempt would normally).

I could start with the side adventures of the two complete characters...

For the most part, the characters are coming from different places and backgrounds, so it isn't actually necessary to start as a whole, although it'd be preferred.

So, if wanted, I can begin with Hammer and Kaelyn.

I still need the backgrounds for Grugg, cdnflirt and Sibelius.

As soon as those are done, and I receive them, then this campaign will start with the ready characters.

And... so it looks like there's two medics then: me and Rystefn K'ryll. Hehehe, Rystefn K'ryll can be the away team medic then; mine is fairly noncombative

Riina watches the effects of Acantha's casting, her eyes viewing the procedings carefully. Her eyes scan over the entangled goblins, the free goblin and elf, and the entangled wolf and other elf. So, like all things, it both can aid and harm; it does not distinguish between an ally or enemy so long as it is in its grasp. Riina quietly thinks. Nocking another arrow, she raises her bow and fires at the free goblin, just barely daring to hope that it will fall.

Subject: This looks interesting...

What are you considering to use for the language of the code? If you don't mind putting in a java applet, I think I might actually be able to build it.

Well, that is of course if you don't have a prototype made already

From a programming perspective, perhaps instead of going by names in the database for the number of syllables (which change over time with varying names and so forth), why not try with a sort of standardized bell curve? That way, rather than the common number of syllables growing more common as they would eventually in the suggested system, there would be a consistent chance to get longer or shorter names. It's just a thought, but that way too it might help to reduce computer usage since it wouldn't have to check through the list of names every time you wanted to generate a new name.

Hmm, I can't think of anything else offhand to suggest... but I like the idea!

Accursed blade Linnix thinks bitterly, feeling her arms go stiff as soon as she went to strike. With a clatter, the sword falls from her hands as she draws one of her daggers from its sheath at her belt. The blade's words still echo in Linnix's mind, boring straight through her emotions and instincts to combat with her anger. Shaking her head to clear her mind, she turns to the stranger.

"You know, anyone can tell a tale," Linnix says, her voice straining to remain steady as she grips the dagger, her knuckles turning white as she brings it in a position to strike, "and we've been deceived twice already."

(OOC: Linnix is basically preparing to do a coup de grace to the person; if he reacts by going for a weapon, she'll go ahead and attack anyway, if he doesn't, well... we'll have to see)

The woman turns, and regards the man carefully, her hand moving to her chin in thought as she takes in his appearance.

"I don't believe so; I'm sure I would remember." The woman says finally, the lie smoothly hidden in her steady, matter-of-factly voice.

In truth, it wasn't even that much of a lie; her form now is quite different from her real form, and so she was basically a whole other person, and they hadn't even met when she was in her natural form, separated by several metres as she flew above. As for the beginning question stopped so abruptly by the man, it was quite true he never saw her; at the time, she was invisible. With the half-truth, the lie becomes lost from sight.

Hidden in the form of an elven woman, the little sylph girl once again turns to leave.

Linnix glares at the rider rushing towards her. She had dared to hope such an imbecile would be as weak as the pathetic soul within. Well then, there was no choice. Dropping the crossbow to the ground, her hand grips the hilt of the unknown sword. Linnix draws the sword with a smooth motion, its slight blue aura flowing along behind it like a thin flame, a whisper of silent and unknown power.

Not even thinking about the repurcussions of wielding such a mystery untold, Linnix grips the sword's unfamiliar hilt in both hands and slashes down at her chosen foe. There was nothing else in the world at that time, only Linnix's foe, and the fury behind her attack. This nuisance was the reason she had been woken up, and the beginning of her dream was so promising, they had robbed her of that dream, and now they were going to pay with their life.

Topic: Auguries of Destruction: The Linsemptus - Q/A
Subject: Hmm, regarding a large number of players

Now that I've thought it over, I'm afraid I might have to go ahead and start the game as it is with the five players (as soon as they get me their backgrounds)

There is also the very slim possibility I might end up cutting the player list, just to forewarn those who don't have their character sheet or paragraph.

I know there are extrenuating circumstances, especially at this time of the year (school year specifically), but it isn't really fair to keep the people who are ready waiting... So, I think I'll end up compromising, and start as soon as I have the five player's backgrounds, but have it so that the other four can enter when they're ready. For that reason, I've added the Backgrounds column to the player table list, just so it's easier to see.

If you're missing an item, please get that sent to me when you can, and for backgrounds, it's alright if some details are missing, as I know several people in particular will wish to have incredibly thorough backgrounds.

If you want to specify a specific area or locale, or reference any place in particular in your background history, then you can; otherwise I'll just think of a place for you to enter. Does that sound OK?

Topic: Auguries of Destruction: The Linsemptus - Q/A
Subject: Well...

I think I can handle it ^_^

At any rate, you all expressed interest, so the least I can do is do my best to make sure that it's not a problem with the number of players or whether the party is unbalanced or anything like that. Don't worry about it.

It's my duty to make sure this is a fun game, even with a larger number of people, and I think I'm up for the challenge. If anything, a larger number of people gives me a lot more to write about! (I love creative writing... can you tell? )

On another note, I've nearly gotten the geography of Tiancann thought out, so if you want to specify a starting locale, this hopefully will help.

Tiancann is a continent that can be divided into five regions geographically. There is the western forest province that spans from the northern mountain range to the sandy shores of the south. In the center is a wide plain, with only a single city breaking its flat horizon. In the east there is an interlay of rivers from the northern mountain region and the eastern ocean, forming a lush environment. In the south, it is mostly desert-like, with soft, fine sand dunes forming a second ocean between the southern border of the plains and the southern ocean that is broken by a vast oasis of green. In the frozen north, on the other side of the mountain range, is a penninsula that reaches towards the northern pole of the planet. The northern mountain range reaches from the east to the west in a fairly straight line across the top of the continent. South from the center of the mountain range is the lonely mountain of Venerro, some few killometres from the nearest mountain. Its peak scratches the sky above, and easily dwarfs many of the other mountains. As such, it is easy to see against the horizon from all the corners of the continent.

Along with five regions are five main cities. The northern city of Girhn on the north penninsula specializes in the mining of the riches in the mountain range, with artisans forming weapons, armour, statues and treasure alike with the valuable ores and metals. The eastern capital of Aqinarr utilizes the best that the ocean can provide, with its navy of fishing boats as well as specialized diving legions to mine the pearls hidden along the eastern reefs. The desert city of Fonhinqann actually thrives in the otherwise hospitable environment, working with the oasis to cultivate the otherwise infertile land, and using the mighty winds of the desert to further their progress. The forest city of Hylon uses the riches that the western forest itself provides, creating beautiful worksmanship in their culture and wonderfully carved halls. The final city in the center of the continent is the meeting and trading captial of these four cities, and as such holds a majestic apparel that is impossible for either city to attain on its own, using the wooden carvings from the west, the metalwork of the north, the power of the wind from the south, and the beauty of the ocean from the east. This city is undoubtedly the capital of Tiancann, known as Wanqir. It is here where the delegates from the four other cities meet, to decide the course of the future for Tiancann based on what they need as a whole, recognizing individual needs but each elected to know when sacrifice is required to benefit the whole in the long run. Under such rule, the continent of Tiancann has thrived for a millenia, until now, when the disaster of the Linsemptus strikes...

Linnix awoke irritated. This is now the third time she has been awakened and her seething temper rose exponentially. She didn't know and likewise didn’t care who these people were or where they came from; all she knew was that they were not courteous, and they were the ones who woke her up. Getting up slowly, she slips out of sight, and draws the hand crossbow.

In Linnix’s hand, the feeling of the crossbow’s handle further awakens her, putting her anger into action. I’ll fix you. Linnix thinks bitterly, her uncharacteristic rage reaching the same zenith as in the cave. She looks out from beyond the cover of the tree, and levels the crossbow with the stranger’s head. Without a second thought, she fires, and then instinctively grabs one of her daggers in her other hand; if they survived, they would be sure to come and look. However, in reaching for the dagger, her hand passes by the handle of the short sword. Linnix pauses for just a second, but reasons that since the sword glows, it could give away her position, and if the person took it from her it would give them an advantage against the others. Well, if she had to, she would use definately it, although, she didn’t know what it did...

Riina sighs, Just as I thought she thinks as she raises her bow, which was already nocked with an arrow beforehand. In the end, even the crow is pounced by the wolf when it is still aware. Such is the way of the predator, seeing all others outside of their group as competition, and acting to remove that threat.

Riina draws the bow string, feeling it against the side of her nose, with her hand holding the string just below her right eye. The string lines up with her pupil, and so too with the first goblin that reacted. Adjusting her aim with the hopes of piercing the goblin's armour in a weak spot, which were generally at the neck, head, and both shoulder and leg joints.

Settling on aiming at the creature's neck, Riina releases the string, following through the motion by bringing her right hand back past her ear. Holding the bow completely still until the arrow sails past, she then immediately reaches over her shoulder for another arrow, either at the same target, or the next threat closest to the currently unarmed elf.

A dark idea blossoms in the depths of Riina's mind, and her eyes seem to fade into a pitch blackness for just a moment. Will it really come to that? she wonders.

The woman nearly stops in her tracks, seeing the stranger advance on her. *sigh* Well, how can I blame them? I'd probably advance too, seeing a stranger in an alley and I am in the dark here. the girl thinks to herself, continuing to walk into the light.

"There's no need for that." She says, her voice slightly surprising her, being gentle and calm but firm, and with a pitch and resonance different and seemingly older than her normal voice; she had forgotten this body's voice, since she had not used it for a while now.

Stepping into the light, the woman curtsies to the stranger, "I'm sorry if I startled you, but I wasn't expecting to come across anyone going this way."

She smiles warmly, "Well, I imagine you are busy as well, so I won't take any more of your time."

The woman steps forward, passing the stranger, "Take care." She says in farewell.

Riina bites her lip, "I don't like it."

She pauses for a moment, considering if there's any other ways she can think of offhand, and comes up blank.

"Very well then." Riina says cautiously, "We shall try this, but be wary; no predator accepts an offering without suspicion. The predator has the upper hand right now, in both numbers, and in that it holds captive what you're seeking the rescue of, as well as the destruction I at least have to try to avert. Be on your guard, and be ready to counterattack if they go straight into attacking you. I'll be ready."

Subject: An Embodiment of Destruction

"Do you know that scent?" Riina asks softly, "It is the scent of what is in those barrels, and I'm guessing in those sticks as well. It is a dry powder, not unlike the parched earth after a drought, but unlike mere soil and dirt, it holds within its form an intense flame. Ignited by fire, that powder amplifies it, so much so that it forms in an instant what appears to be a piece of the sun. If confined and lit, like it would be in those sticks I'm guessing, I can only imagine what destruction it could bring... Fire does not like to be confined, and if given the chance it will burst the container, with an even more disastrous result than were it merely spreading."

Riina goes silent, staring at the barrels while the other one elaborated on a potential plan. She sighs.

"When the tiger is presented a squirrel by an elk, it doesn't see the squirrel, and pounces the elk." Riina says simply, "If the squirrel is dead, so much the better, for the tiger will take both."

Riina shakes her head and gives another sigh, "That powder's purpose is only destruction; it cannot be used for any other thing. Its presence here can really only mean that those goblins are going to destroy something, and as we are close to the forest, I'd guess that that something is in the forest itself. We are running out of options, and time."

Riina tightens her grip on her bow, "I had hoped otherwise, but it appears that the least desireable action is among the only options we have. Regardless of what action we take, there is the potential for something to go wrong, but given the threat of that powder, I suppose we will have to deal with the immediate threat. When the lynx's home is threatened by a wolf, does the lynx run, or fight, even though the wolf has a pack it can call?"
