After getting through half the plate Zara pauses to get her second wind. "So which way are we going. Mother always told me to follow the rivers downill. Thats were you find people living."

Stardate: 2368.04.10 – 1242--2037
USS Discovery, Decks 1--Whatever Deck

Starting at the top, hair neatly caught back in a tight bun, Ensign La Rue headed out to explore the ship. Starting at the top, Deck 1, she did her best to look like she belonged there without intruding or interfering. The Observation Room was open and empty she pause for a few moments to take in the grand view before moving on. The Ready Room, she noted its position bet felt it better not to enter, what if there were a meeting in progress. The Bridge, she moved in to the side and looked it over. She could not keep the thrill of stepping onto the bridge from flashing through her, it was like stepping onto the stage before a performance, exhilarating and frightening at the same moment. There were no command officers that she could see, but there was a bustling of engineering and ops types. She had prepared to answer a Commanding Officer’s question as to why she was on the bridge. Lt. Briggs had told her to acquaint herself with the ship. But no one asked so she did not have to reply.

On down she went deck by deck, corridor by corridor. She wanted a feel of the ship, actually walking each deck as it was one of her best learning modalities, her kinesthetic, and then came her auditory and finally her visional modes. Toni could have stayed in her room with a mug of tea, a crisp apple and some sharp cheddar cheese and gone through a visual reality tour, but walking the decks gave her the opportunity to use all of her learning modalities.

The idea of food, and a rumble in her stomach told her it was dinnertime and passed, especially since she had had no lunch. Now the question was, back to her room and a lonely dinner or?

She was on her way to Ten Forward

USS Discovery, Deck 10 Ten Forward – 2051

Toni could not ignore her stomach so she went straight to the replicator and ordered.

“Cajun style fried catfish about 1 and a half pounds, a dozen hushpuppies, collard greens with bacon bits, corn on the cob with lots of butter, no salt, but light pepper, and a tall glass of southern style sweet mint tea.” Later she would add a big slice of pecan pie ala mode.

Taking her tray she looked about for a table, it was passed dinner time, but there were crewmen socializing. Rather than join a table of socializers she sought a quiet table for herself, the only thing she wanted to do was eat, and she had a healthy appetite. Her friends at dance school, she paused and let the fleeting pain of that thought subside, and at the academy would tease her about it, they might have been jealous of her high metabolism. It was their consensus that she burned calories just eating.

What I have seen in the TV and movies is that itis not common to salute ranking officers when passing them in the corridors. Is that correct?

Also does anyone know of a protocol for a Junior Officer entering the Bridge?

Subject: OH, NO!!!! Not Fair!

Stardate: 2368.04.10
Time: 12:23 IN tubolift stopped at deck 2

Antoinette was rubbing her worry stone again.

Its not fair. Just because I am the last to be assigned, it is just not fair.

She look again at her PADD, there was a detailed digram of the deck and a gold dot representing herself and and blinkng hot pink for where she was headed, with a gold line marking her path along the corridors. She was stuck down at the end of a hall of the circular corridor surrounded by Senior officers. Deck three had all been assigne to Junior grade officers before she arrived and the only Jr Officers berths avaiable were on deck 2, with all the Senior officers.

Maybe she sould be glad for one thing, she had no roommate unless some poor schmuck was suddening transferred aboard in the next two days, but the Lieutenant, in Ops said she was the last one to report aboard. Of course it did not mean someone else was scheduled to come in after her.

=/\\=Deck 2.=/\\= chimed the lift

Toni took a step out of the lift and gave a quick look both directions before following the PADD to her assigned room. Once she keyed the door she lipped in a allow it to shut behind her before taking a deep breath and letting it out.

The she took it in again. A WINDOW!!! There in front of her was space, some apparatus of the dock, and some of the little Worker Bees buzzing about the hull of the Discovery. Toni lost track of time until she finally tore herself from the view, and went to pick a bedroom. IT did not take long to stow her gear and find a safe place to stow her case of stones and her box of tarot.
decks.

Now she had two things to do, one to learn the ship and two to learn the Lieutenant’s nickname. The man had all but challenged her openly about it. He was not the only one she wanted to learn about, but he would be first. The Senior cadet underground was a fount of information and it was there that Toni’s best friend, Jenny St. George, had given her the computer program that would allow her to “break” into security files of a higher level security clearance than her own. Jenny was a master computer whiz, so she had tweaked the program to go deeper and leave less trace that the one commonly circulated among the 4th year cadets. In fact Jenny stated with bragging, “It’s a whole new program really, the other was out dated and it left bits of a trail.”

Jenny synced her personal computer PADD to the service PADD and started the program.

“File search, Access personnel file of Lieutenant Nickolas Briggs.” While she waited for the program to worm itself in she went to her nightstand and grabbed a deck of cards, she might as well see what they had to say. After shuffling and cutting them a number of time she spread them in a fan and ticked 3 and turned them over one by one.

The Ace of Wands was a powerful male symbol, Lt Briggs was surely that, and there could be a number of males onboard to fit that. But the meaning was more that a powerful male. It stood for the initiation of creative ventures and physical actions. It told of Leadership potential through self-sacrifice. In all the card’s meaning was of power, activity and sacrifice to produce creativity and leadership.

Leadership again. That was twice in back to back readings.

The Emperor, another strong male figure wisdom through worldly experience, powerful creative energies, action as the road to fulfillment. Wisdom. Self-discipline. Authority. Protection. Self-control.

the Captain? Possible.

Turning over the last card, The Five of Cups. She paused to look at the female depicted on the card. She knew it meaning and it was her for it meant emotional motivations, loss, sadness, regret and failure to enjoy life.

The truth of the card hit home. The box of Tarot decks had been bequeathed to her by her Cajun grandmother, she had died at the beginning of Toni’s third year. Yes and there was regret, an old regret tied to why she was in Starfleet in the first place. Regret in giving up her dream, and in that was born her failure to enjoy life.

She sat staring at the cards until her PADD signaled that the Jenny’s “Snake” program was finished.

“Ah, ha!” she exclaimed as she read through the file. She smiled when she read his nickname. Maybe he should contact Jenny, she could probably get it erased off of Star Fleets records. In fact that was where she ended up, in Star Fleet’s Computer Security Department on Earth.

With a good sense of Lieut. Briggs she now went for files on Mactavish and Captain Blair. She gathered up her cards, placed then back in the box and left her PADD connected to the ship’s computer to bring up the files on the next two.

Toni straighten her uniform and headed back to the lift, “Deck One,” she announced. She might as well start at the top little knowing that it was to be her first duty post.

Stardate: 2368.04.10 – 11:45
USS Discovery, Docking Bay and nearest Computer Terminal

Since the Office of the Deck knew of her there had to have been a communiqué of such to the ship.
=/\\=Computer, have any communiqués come from Star Fleet concerning one Ensign Antoinette La Rue. =/\\=

=/\\=Stardate 2367.4.10 at 11:29 records of estimated arrival time of Ensign Antionette La Rue were sent…… =/\\=

Toni had been intent of listening to the computer. She sighed in relief, they had her records and arrival schedule. Had she caught the previous shuttle they would have never let her on board. As much as she wanted to stow her gear sh would have to take it with her and locatethe Security Department.

A first conversation with Nick was always somewhat... disconcerting... to a new member of the security staff. Especially if he'd started it by sneaking up behind you when you were at a console. He was large, he was bulky, and he was immaculately groomed and essentially expressionless - even his voice was steady and monotonous enough you would have heard more life talking to Lt. Commander Data - in truth, he looked less like an officer and more like a plastic model of an officer made for a recruitment vid. Of course, he knew all this himself... which is why he'd taken the opportunity to sneak up behind Ensign La Rue.

"Ensign La Rue?"

"You may need to visit the ops department. If your room assignment is stuck anywhere, it is either there or back on the station in *their* ops department. Either way, your record and arrival schedule came through earlier, so you do have a posting here, at least."

Toni executed a perfect toe pirouette and faced the speaker, then saluted smartly. He must have hear what the computer reported to answer like that.

“Sir.” She acknowledged quelling the urge to tug at her uniform. Madame Olga advised her once before an audition, “First impressions are very important, put everything you can into your best foot forward, then follow it up with a solid performance.” Funny how advice from her ballet instructor also fit for Starfleet.

Well Madame Olga all my practice to take that first step into the CSO’s office was for naught.

'What is that thing in her hand?' he wondered to himself. It was not important though, so, no questions. Yet.

Note to self, he has excellent hearing,” and as his eyes dropped momentarily to her left hand, and shape eyes.

"I am Lieutenant Briggs. I am the head of the security department on this ship, and you will be reporting to either myself or, if I'm out of contact, the Tactical chief, Lieutenant Mactavish. I would hope that you had access to this command and control data already, but if the paperwork is screwed up, there's no telling what information you were provided in advance. And if you have had access to my file, no, I do not like being referred to by my nickname."

“Yes, sir.” Toni wondered what he meant, why would she look into his records. But then as a member of Security is was her duty of know about the crew of the ship.

'I've spent years trying to have that removed from my record...'

"If you have any questions, feel free to ask them."

“Yes, Sir, I have a couple of questions. When do my duties start? And who is the officer directly over me after yourself and Lt MacTavish?

"By the time you have seen the Ops department about your missing room assignment, I should have worked up a duty post for you. Either way, you're not on duty until tomorrow. I suggest you use the time to take a look around the ship. You do not want to get lost in the line of duty."

Insert answer to who her immediate superior is.

“Yes Sir. Thank you, sir.” and waited at attention to be dismissed.

(dismissed)

She saluted, slipped the worry stone away, grabbed the handle of her rolling luggage, and turned down the hall heading for a lift to take her to OPS.

She let out her breath when she was far enough away to not be heard by him, well down the corridor. Did she sound as “wet behind the ears” as she thought she did. She had not expected him to pop up right behind her. Gads, what must her think of her. Toni unhooked her PADD and queried it for directions to the nearest lift to take her to the Opeartions Department to get a room. She would be glad to get rid of her heavy luggage.

"So let us go forward.....and down as Gubulondil is at his weakest now."

"I only hope his intelligence and wisdom, which comes with age, is as much affected by his youth as his powers."

After whatever discussion happens, Tamuril, sword in hand steps, towards the cave with the distant light.

Was she frightened, yes, but she had to control her fears just as Lady Elessarae Isiliri had. She also had to put her trust in her companions and Elessarae had done. Stardate: 2368.04.10 – 011:45
USS Discovery, Docking Bay and nearest Computer Terminal

Toni grabbed her gear and stood at the lock the moment the shuttle connected to the Discovery.

The Discovery! A Galaxy Class ship!

The cards were right. The first had been the Ten of Cups, (proper) Perpetual Success, yet the deeper truth of the card touched on a deep hurt for it dealt with deceptive fantasies, prostitution of talents, and wishful thinking. There was a lesson to be learned and that was to face emotional reality. The second card had been the Queen of Swords (proper) signifying a woman who is perceptive and intelligent. Sharp and quick witted she understands human suffering. A situation calls for spiritual perception. Professional counseling or self analysis may be needed. Toni let out a sigh, both of the cards was all too true of her. The third card had been the Seven of Cups normally Illusory Success but it had been reversed so that it meant success through will and determination. Emotional discrimination is valuable. Set goals and follow through.

Toni had been watching the ship all through the short trip from the Star Base in between going over the ship’s layout and information on the command officers which had been downloaded to her PADD. She had spent the entire trip from earth acquainting herself with the layout and crew of the USS Brattain, a Miranda class ship only to arrive and find that it had been sent out on an priority mission. A few seconds after checking in on Star Base 128 and learning the USS Brattain was off without her, her PADD beeped and there was a new set of orders awaiting her. She almost saluted the command officer who recorded her change of assignment. She was to report to the USS Discovery. Oddly, as if the man knew the Captain of the Discovery personally, he had added, that the ship was due to depart in two days, but she should check in immediately as there was no knowing when Captain Blair would announce that the Discovery was ready to depart.

She ran to get a shuttle only to find that is was already on a run to the Discovery with a pair of new Ensigns. Well she would not be alone as being the newbie among the Jr. Officers. During the wait she downloaded the specs on the ship and studied them as best she could.

Toni double checked her gold and black uniform, took in a deep breath and let it out slowly, then took up the handle of her rolling bag in her left hand. Stepping through the first and then second lock and onto the deck proper of the USS Discovery, Toni come smartly to attention, saluted the logo, in lieu of a flag, of the United Federation of Planets, and then the Officer of The Deck.

“Ensign Antoinette La Rue, reporting for duty aboard the USS Discovery. Permission to come aboard.”

There was a slight pause, then came the reply with a salute.

“Permission Granted,”

Did she say it right, as far as the proper protocol she had done the right thing, but did it sound right. She had not wanted to sound like a shavetail Jr. Officer on her first real assignment, even if she was.

Toni moved on till she came to the first computer station. “Computer, where are the Quarters for Ensign Antoinette La Rue.”

=/\\= There are no quarters assigned to Ensign Antionette La Rue. There is no such person listed on the roster of the USS Discovery.=/\\=

Now what? It seems she out ran the notice of her reassignment. Though the Officer of the Deck must have gotten something about her, or he would have never let her on board. Toni did not like loose ends and the last hour had been full of them, this was not a auspicious beginning to her first tour of duty.

Toni reached into a small case hanging from her service belt. She brought out a small oval of smokey Quartz that was shaped like a flattened eggs, allbeit a small one, and held it in her left had between her thumb and forefinger. Absentlly she rubbed her thumb in the slight thumbshaped depression that had been carved in it. Her worry stone, smokey quartz was excellent for draining away negative energies.

Toni rubbed as she consulted the computer so she could find The Securtiy headquarters and hopefully the Chief Security Officer.
