"Yes food, I am famished, what will all the hard riding into the night and trying to find a camp site in the ruins and then all the Troglodites coming in a ruining our chance for dinner and rest, It was a mess and then we ran into an army of Orcs trying to get away from the Troggies. Seems the two were going to have a war over the ruins and we were in the center. Soo, what's for dinner and what brings you here, we came through an ancient portal, but don't worry none of the Troggies or Orcs can come through, I fixed the portal by taking down a power pole. Oh, of course we can not go back that way, but who would want to right now."

This was all said quickly and seemingly in one breath.

"They look friendly and I smell food, so let's go."

She kicks Sebastian and kicks again, and again. Finally she half turns in the saddle to slap him on the butt, whe he took off with a lurch. Zara scrambled to regain her seat and the mule trotted forward in the most uncomfortable bone jarring trot.

As she bounces forward she waves and finally draws rein reaching the small group.

"Hello." she said looking them over. "I'am Zara."

What Devon and the other see and a gangly teenage girl, golden blond hair that seemed to have been tangled in the wind and curing locks went hither and yon. Her golden eyes seemed to large for her pixish face. She was as yet not grown into herself, but the bones of her face and body and certain aspect of her figure hinted of a budding beauty.

Rowena was coming back from the market place with a basket of oranges when The screamiong caught her attention.
Rowena slowed at the sight to parents and children hanging about the schoolhouse and there seemed to be a bit of consternation on their part. AS she came up she heard snatches of what the others were saying. She looked at the charred body and winced She might have said her deserved it, he was a known bully like his older brother and as he was the instigator of the tormenting of the young dog, now trotting dutifully at her feet, clean and tail wagging happily, but seeing him like this was blood curtling.

"Rico, started it." one of the kid yelled.

Sirion a boy a bit older than her, if not by years, was comforting a distraught Matias and young boy who had always stood out as different. Sirion emerged from the crowd and cautiously approached the boy. While everyone else whispered and did nothing Sirion had taken control of the situation. Sirion then called hi sister sister to run and get Mathias's parents and she dashed off towards the Prudencio farm.

Rowena’s heart went out to Matias and she moved forward to where Sirion stood with the boy as Cristobal went off toward the schoolhouse.

“Sirion,” she said walking up and then picked up an orange out of the basket and peeled it and gave part to Matias. “Here, Matais, it is as a sweet as honey.”

Nothing like something mundane and sharing some fruit to hopefully help settle the boy. She had learned that by acting as if nothing were wrong, that many situations figured themselves out a lot easier. She waited patiently for more to be revealed about on what had perpetrated this unusual event. Thought from Mathias's bloody and bruised face she guessed the Rico had possibly been beating on him.

Brianna stands, to watch the newcomers, as she gives a brief look to Lorae. When Lorae gives a nod, she removes her hand from the pommel of her sword and steps out from under the tree as the riders approach.

She notices Shadowbane watching also, soon the stallion begins to arch his neck and prance over to the group. Brianna snorts, there had to be a mare in the group of horses.

Long ago she learned to assess the riders by their horses and how they handled them, so far she like what she saw, except for the mule. The riding mule was an enigma so she had some reservations about its rider. As for the one that rode on the carpet, now that was entirely another matter.

As she watched the newcomers ride down the hill, Flame and Precious fly out to greet the group, flying about them and generally being pests at this point.

Subject: Loren

Loren sighed when they reached the roadhouse. At least she would not have to cook dinner tonight. The trip had been interesting and uneventful, something they all appreciated. Best of all Loren had maintained her disquise as a male.

Friendships had been struck by some of the hired guards, Nodrog the Gnome and Oliander the Half-Elf seemed to hit it off fairly well. Mai’ia the Wild Elf from the rain forests was a different matter, though she spent time with Almiri and herself, there was an sense of displacement about her, as if some part of her were elsewhere, and Loren sensed it was linked to some painful memory. Given the wars, it was not too hard to guess that she might have lost family and or friends and even her home, so many were here had been unsettled by the wars.

The last of the wagons rolled through the gates as Loren stood with her fellow guards when the cry “ORCS!” was sounded.

Emerging seemingly out of thin air in the cleared area a mere 50 feet away from the open gate as the final wagon begins entering the roadhouse; a blood crazed band of 24 olive green orcs [plus a mottled red Shaman leading the raiding party from the center of the group] advance menacingly, their beady eyes fixed with murderous intent upon the adventurers outside the gate, their yellow jagged teeth bared in crazed defiance, unlike any the adventurers had encountered during their 12 week journey to Dirty's Roadhouse!

The orcs occupy an area 25 feet across and 25 feet deep, between 50 and 70 feet from the center of the roadhouse gate. Each of the olive green orcs are brandising a battleaxe, wooden shield and light crossbow. The red splotched Shaman is armed with a quarterstaff, club and dagger.

The first 10 orcs are charging the adventurers outside the gate with blood curdling snarls of defiance, intending to attack with their battleaxes; while the other 14 olive green orcs advance 15 feet straight ahead before firing their light crossbows!

Meanwhile, the red splotched Shaman stands his ground behind a solid wall of his blood crazed minions and conjurs a spell from his stationary position 60 feet from the roadhouse gate.

Loren turned her horse toward the opening of the gates and let loose the reigns and slapped it on the rear, sending the mare running inside. Loren then moved to the corner of the gate for some cover, unslung her bow and drew arrows from her quiver.

"If you do not think that the monastery will have any more knowledge than you, what about Cardist?" Tamuril added her question "Could we not adjure cardista to get information on how to deal with her pertinacious son."

"For Adaron's sake," Tamuril was a be vexed that the Gods could not even deal with themselves. Gubulondil stole Cardista avatar in the first place and forced her to pray to him. Could we not also beseech Mevien Tarai and Mith Y'rana for justice. There seems to be more than a bit of injustice done by Gubulondil."

Something did not make sense. "Surely Cardista must hold some enmity towards Gubulondil for usurping her avatar like that. Why has she done nothing?"

Tamuril's mind sought for some answers to the riddle a thought struck her, as to what the Druid said about Gubulondil not wanting to kill his own followers. "Why can't the people of the land also pray to Gubulondil? They are people of the sea."

Alexandria, Soronuume, Brianna, Lorae, and Devon had finish the meal provided and began to clean up what an aweful braying sound reached their ears. Coming down off the same knoll they had appeared on was a small group of riders, two mounted on horses, one on a big black and white appaloosa mule and the last on a flying carpet.

One male and 3 females and the male was definitely catlike and the female on the carpet was likewise catlike. (I will let the necomers describe themselves.)

The mule brayed again and his young rider slapped his neck to stop him.

Having found what they thought was a good place to rest in the ruins they had found in the Barrens, the adventurers set about unloading the horses. Well most of them as Moraglin stepped off her carpet and reached into her bag of holding and pulled out her mattress and bedroll. As they worked a scent wafted through the standing and fallen stones of the buildings and the keen senses of the Felani, Oko and the 1/2 Felani, Moraglin caught scent the musty odor. Alerting the others Zara took to the air in the form of a tiny dragon and flew to Moraglin to have her cast a spell of invisibility on her.

Once in the air Zara followed the air currents and found the source....sources of the smell. Troglodites hundreds of them and more coming from around the corners of walls and building she could not see over from her angle, they were heading straight toward where they were camped. Zara zoomed back and gave the warning. Barely unpacked the group scrambled to repack and mount. Zara pointed to the northeast, that way, I will go up and scout a path. With Zara's keen night sight she lead them through the streets with the least amount of litter. She went up high again, enough to reconnoiter where they were in relation to the Trogs.

As she flies down she spies an area of active magic right in the center of the an open area off to the north. As the rode it there were two large stone pillars standing 15 feet up and about 20 feet apart. To the magic users the glow of magic was an unsteady pulse. "Moraglin can you check it out, I think it is a portal or gateway from the looks of it.

It took a bit of time to discern the nature of the magic as it fluctuated, but they did. Meanwhile Moraglin set up some walls of force to block the most direct routes to where they were, as it seemed the Trogs were still coming their way. Oko prepared for battle as the Trogs closed in and indeed a group of scouts ran into one of Moraglin's walls. Dumb as they were the piled against it givin Zara the perfect opportunity to flame them. She flew to the best spot and sent a cone of flame across them. Meanwhile another group of scouts coming from another direction came int from where there were no magic walls set yet. Oko was there to meet them his might sword began a deadly dance while up in the air above most ot the shouts and screams Zara's keen ears pick up new sounds. Turning she caught sight of another army working its way southeast through the city. ORCS! It seemed they were in the middle of a battle over the ruins.

Zara few down and warned each of the others to fall back then she went to Moraglin.

"Well?"

"It's a portal, It seems to be working sort of and she tosses a rock through it and it disappears, "but sometime it doesn't work."

"We are going to need it and fast we are in the middle of two armies," said Zara.

"Yes, but where does it go?"

"Be ready,"

Dae looks to her half sister worriedly. "Zara?"

The next moment Zara flew through the portal and was gone.

Moments later she returned. "It's a one way thing, but it is open grasslands and trees and mountains, so it is far better to be there than here."

"Zara, the magic dimmed as you went through, it is now less powered than before."

"Then you all need to go now, Oko, then Dae and Moraglin. If we have to Moraglin and I can feed it some power."

"What if the Orcs or Trogs stumble on this and come through?" Dae asked worriedly.

"They won't I am taken the pole with me, now go."

Oko gave Zara a funny look and then rode through, and the portal dimmed more. Dae went to one pillar and Zara the other and transferred some power to the portal stones for Moraglin to fly through. Zara stood by the pole and waved Dae to go. Meanwhile the Trogs found their ways about the walls of force Moraglin had set and were now entering the open area.

"Go," yelled Zara as she enlarged and as a good sized dragon she pulled on the pillar to loosen it.

Somewhere else Oko, then Daeand Moraglin came out into a undulating grassy valley, and it was daylight. There were mountains to one side and the land seemed to slope down towards a river course the banks of which could be discerned from between the trees that lined it.

At Dae's urging they moved away from where they exited and waited. Agonizing minutes later, for Dae at least, a pillar appeared and was set on the ground.

"I'm here," said Zara. Why don’t I go up and have a look around while I am still invisible.

"Zara." Dae said a bit irked, "you failed to mention daylilght."

"It wasn't important at the time." replied Zara.

"So where is home."

Being invisible she could not point. "Do you see that tall oak close to the river, that way."

Sometime later Zara returned and deposited a deer by them. Then back into an elven looking teen and reported. “Nothing for 50 miles in any direction, but there is a small almost smokeless campfire over that rise and down in some trees by the river. There are some nice looking horses grazing in the meadow close by." In Zara disconnect way of speaking on many subjects at once she went on. “I do not think it would be a good idea to butcher the deer down there though there are trees to hang it in. Oko, can you dress the deer here, I change back and hold it up for you to do it, and save me the heart and liver."

That is what she does and Oko quickly dressed the deer. An hour later they are ready to go, the quarters of the deer packed in a bag of holding and the heart and liver given to Zara. Now to ride over the knoll about a 1/2 mile off and then down to the river where Zara said there were people, well as soon as Zara turned back into herself and mount they would ride there.

Tamuril looked to the sea Druid as Cole misread a number of points.

"Sir," she said in common so all here would understand. "We had heard both sides what we most wish to know is if anything can be done for both sides. You say do not take sides and I believe I can truthfully say we lean neither one way of the other now, but the Deity is question, who was robbed of his priestess has also unbalanced what was and is. So we still seek an answer in hopes that all can be righted."

Topic: ... forth from the Garden...
Subject: Rowena

Rowena was up early and washed and dressed quickly, she seemed not to need as much sleep as her father and Maria the house keeper. She had a couple of thing to do before her father had morning drill practice. She ran to Pedro De Silva’s stable and climbed the fence and whistled. Her father’s warhorse came trotting across the corral and the two of them shared an apple she had brought from the house. She jumped over and the mare’s back and rode her round the corral, guiding her only with her knees. After she dismounted she brushed off the hairs sticking to the inside of her pant legs and climbed back over the fence to race to the bakery just as it opened.

There she bought a loaf of hot bread and then she raced back home to have it on the table before breakfast. It was a common sight to see Rowena running through the village commons, she always seemed to be in a hurry to be somewhere else. Most of the villagers thought her a bit odd, wearing male attire and not having made friends since her father moved here a few years ago. Unlike the village girls about her age, she was lean and tall. But then she was only 13, so she would fill out later. Because she was not full figured she did not attract the attention of the teenage boys, and because she held herself away from the boy crazed girls of her age she had few friends.

Maria, the old woman who lived and worked for her father, was up cooking breakfast. Rowena set the bread in a basket on the table and then sneaked over behind plump Maria and grabbed a couple of pieces of bacon. Maria’s wooden spoon was fast, but not fast enough to connect with Rowena’s hand.

“Ow” she cried as she flipped the hot bacon from hand to hand. She raced out of the house with her prize and fanned it about until she could take quick bits of it.

Maria finally called them to breakfast and Rowena washed quickly and joined her Father and Maria at the table. She gave the grace and then hurriedly ate the meal of eggs, bacon, fruit, and yesterdays bread toasted with cheese.

Breakfast ended and Johan rose to walk to the drilling field Rowena followed in his wake. After her father moved into the sally she donned padding and took up a wooden sword and shield to begin practice, not that her father wanted her to practice, but as he was busy drilling she would follow his instructions and go through all the sword movements that her father taught to the militia and to the Town Undaunted, she worked on swordsmanship until her father finished the session.

Sweating and damp, Rowena left the drill field and headed for the river, there was a nice quiet and secluded spot where she could bathe. Most of the girls her age had big breasts and wide hips and the boys drooled after them. One of the reasons she stuck to male attire. She washed her clothes at the same time and let them dry on the bushes. It was noon when she redressed and headed back to get something for lunch.

She usually went around the main area of town to get home but today she cut through because she was hungry. As she came to a corner she heard the sounds of yipping and the raucous noise of boys’ voices. They were holding down a young dog and tying sticks to its tail, ready to let it go. They never got to. Rowena dove into their middle and grabbed the pup in her arms. They tried to hit her, but using her feet and body she blocked some of the blows and then got some good kicks off before kicking her way free. They gave chase and Rowena knew to run, and like a deer she bounded off cutting thought alleys with them on her heals. They were getting close when she spied a sanctuary, Master Diaz’s wine shop

“Sorry Sir,” she murmured and looked back outside and the boys were getting closer. Master Diaz was a good friend of her father’s, they loved to chat an play chest in the evening at the tavern. He walked to the doorway and glared at the boys. “You young troublemakers get home before I report you to the Watch.” Rowena left after the boys disappeared. “Strange child,” Master Diaz muttered and went back into his shop.

Ok, life in Gefahr was not very exciting and the townspeople seemed to like it that way, but for Rowena who was always wanting to….well go place and see things it was boring. Many days she would sneak away and lay on a grassy knoll not far from home, or sometimes up a tree laying out on a branch, looked up into the sky and dream of different places and people.

Rowena, had untied the sticks and was soothing the dog by the time she got home. Maria was outside peeling potatoes.

“Oh no, not another homeless animal?”

Rowena gave her a rueful smile and said nothing. She went and got it a bowl of water and a hunk of bread for now. She had always felt an affinity to animals and they seemed to like her. She watched the dog lap the water and hungrily eat the bread. Maria just shook her head, Rowena was a strange little girl, not grown up physically but in other ways older that her years. “Rowena, please pick me out some tomatoes,” Maria call out as Rowena went off to her garden.

The garden was her sanctuary, the earliest memories she had of her mother were being with her as she tended her flowers and vegetables in a garden she had grown wherever they were living. Now Rowena tended the garden, she weeded and watered singing a little song that her mother sang when working with the plants. Like her mother she talked to her plants using their names as her mother had taught Rowena in her strange language. Rowena’s garden was a riot of colorful flowers and bountiful vegetables. The surplus they sold or traded for things they needed.

After dinner Rowena went to the cupboard and took out a wooden case and opened it to reveal her mother’s lap harp. It was a beautiful piece of workmanship that someone had spent hours carving trees and vines and hidden about them were animals. A few peered out from behind a bush a bird flew between the trees, there was a deer, a howling wolf, an owl, and others. When she was smaller her mother would have her search for all the hidden animals. Rowena rubbed a finger over the tiny field mouse she had found after her mother had died. Her mother’s harp and her garden became Rowena’s refuge as she grieved.

She began to play the music and songs her mother had taught her, songs with words no one understood, but just the sound of the harp and the Rowena’s clear rich voice made up for the fact that no one understood the words. As she played the young dog came over and laid down at her feet, the two household cat were old enough to ignore him and also found places to snuggle up against Rowena, each on their own side on the chair where she sat and played.

Afterward her father went to the tavern for socializing, Rowena was left to herself and Old Maria went off to bed. She put the harp away and took out her father’s longsword. She went outside and began to do her sword practice with a real sword. Early that day she had tied up bundles of straw and weeds she had pulled from the garden, these were the enemy which she slashed and pierced with quick, well time movements. She knew it was not the same as fighting a real enemy who would be dodging and striking back, but……the day would come when she could realize her dream of becoming a warrior. Why was it only boys became heroes in the stories.

When her keen hearing detected footsteps on the cobbled path to their house she raced back inside to put the sword away after giving it a quick wipe with her tunic. She silent footed it up the stairs to the loft that was her bedroom and slipped out of her clothes and into bed.
