Subject: sword? What sword...

"I've heard of the sword Iyaldar carried, though he himself never knew the full power of his weapon. It was a sword of Brilliant Energy; one of the rare blades blessed by Solanis himself, it is said. It goes by many names, and has traveled the world, changing hands whenever it chose. It is said to have a mind of its own, but that might just be legend."

He shrugged. "That is what I know of the sword. Are you interested in the water breathing potions?"

Hey guys,

I just got a message from Ayrn, saying that he will put this game on pause for at least a few months due to personal reasons.

Now I have a question for you: do we go seek another player, or will we continue with the five players we have now?

Please take into consideration:
1 - Vesper might still join (I count the chances 50-50 )
2 - An extra player also means more people to wait on
3 - An extra player means extra hands in combat
4 - An extra player might be fun (yeah, number three before number 4. :BGB )

Let me know what you think.

The druid suddenly eyed Driscoll with an investigating stare. "The sword? You mean the sword in my mosquitto story earlier? That was just a metafore, my good man."

(OOC: I've just rolled Sense Motive for the three of you, and only Isilimiri seems to believe he is not exactly being honest. )

That last remark was more a way of your DM to push you in some kind of direction.

And assuming you've asked the Druid why he hangs around the village and stuff: he replies that these lands are his home. He has been living there for a long time, watching over the sea-life, the ecosystems in the dunes, and the village in the way he thinks is best. He has pushed many adventurers away from meddling in the affairs of the village out of fear that they would simply kill the lizardmen and thus destroy everything. He would've stopped you from entering the well if he had been present at the time you went in.

Another guess you can make is that Cardista put him here so he can find the right people to end this problem.

Another guess could be that everything he is telling you is a lie.

And, assuming you've asked him the first question as well: he replies that Iyaldar the lizardwizard has a much more direct link to Gubulondil's conscious, being a high priest and all. Gubulondil isn't all knowing, but he knows much. The druid is not afraid to speak out loud because he follows the path of Cardista. He explains that part of Gubulondil is watching the village at all time. He also knows that many, many other parts are probably involved with other things like management of the currents and most likely a few other chaotic schemes.

I hope this helps a bit.

bonus points for Eol for following my lead.

I'm really glad we have so many people left from the previous game. I took a big part of my original post and altered it a bit. As you can see I left in the reference to Grothtorg, who was Wyrmsting's character at the time.

You must've seen a different movie.

No, I understand that opinions can differ. I loved it, and I would like to see it again sometime soon. I did think it offered a new whole. Yeah, everything has been done before, but that's basically with every movie that comes out. It's the combination of elements and how it is formed that totally intrigued me.
And you can say that they didn't keep a straight line by starting as a documentary and ending in regular story telling, but I myself liked how the two blended.

But I guess that's the thing. You never know how you're going to react to a movie. I recently recommended Monsters vs Aliens to somebody, and they didn't like it at all. But I was just in the right mood for that particular kind of movie. Moods matter.

"Not lightly at all." Blbaobabl replied. "Not only would you have to travel to the bottom of the sea, you would have to fight a God.
Although I have to say that the sword would bring you great benefits. Plus, I believe that if you would strike against him, this is the perfect time. He has been returning to infant form for decades, and will reach infant form sometime soon. If anybody would ever strike, now would be the time to do it.
Besides, I happen to have a few bottles with a Waterbreathing enchantment."

He glanced at them conspiratively (is that even a word, btw?), and added..
"But I'm encouraging you not to interfere. I'm neutral after all!"

"You could try, of course." Blbaobabl replied. "My reserves with that plan are mostly ethical though. Is it right to pray to a God because he will kill you if you don't? Even if you don't know that's the reason? But it's worth a try."

He paused.

"Still, how will we know if the spell has been lifted?"

(OOC: you guys have to understand that what I type in this conversation is Blbaobabl's concept of thought. It doesn't mean that he is correct, and you don't have to agree with his reasoning.)

the direction issue bothered me a bit too. Not too much though.

You can solve this problem by simply adding arrows that lead the reader in the right direction. If you orchestrate it like that, it's no longer confusing, it's artistic freedom.

"It would seem that way." The druid responded. "But I think the Gods do not care so much for a handful of men. I'm afraid they look at the big picture rather than individual people. You and I care, but is Gubulondil evil because he is angry? Would we not kill a mosquittoe if it kept us awake all night? What would we do with the same mosquittoe if it took our favored weapon, hypothetically speaking of course."

"Now I don't say I agree with his choices. But I think the Gods chose indifference because it is not their place to interfere in something like this. They certainly don't interfere everytime a follower of Tyrannis kills an innocent man. They don't punish Garghas if one of his clerics spreads a new plague. Hardship can also be seen as an opportunity for us to show who we are, and make choices of our own."

I can't believe nobody commented anything on this website about the movie 'District 9' yet!!

I just finished watching it, and I can't remember the last time I saw something so incredibly original.

The story: Aliens have landed on earth, and are put behind fences, where they will live in slums called 'District 9'. They are outcasts, unwanted, violated and discriminated against, especially by the weapons industry, who see a profit in the alien technology. (In this movie it is shown clearly how wicked and cruel we humans can be towards others who are unlike us.)
This tale revolves around a man who is in charge of relocating the aliens to a new 'improved' district, which is nothing more than a modern concentration camp. Through a series of events he becomes an outcast himself and undergoes the same horrors as the aliens.

It would be a shame to tell you more.

This movie starts as a documentary but turns into a mix of sci-fi and action towards the end. It's filmed in a rough manner, not completely hand-held camera work, not entirely hollywood style either.
Be warned though, for there are plenty of blood, gore and shocking images in this movie. It is a science fiction film with horror elements, but nothing like Event Horizon or the Cell. It is a truly original, instant classic, if you ask me.

Go see it. Now!

"I can tell you that there is nothing you will find that you haven't already heard." the druid added.

"But you may be right. If Gubulondil was somehow absorbed by Cardista, or destroyed in any other way, this situation could be solved. But who would be mad enough to face a God?"

At the dawn of time,
the winds arrived,
and carried spores from Yonder.
Rock breathed and split,
then cradled seeds,
and sprang ideas of wonder.

From ‘The Musings of Hurond Trippledig, Captain of the Throne Guard. Recorded on one of many intoxicated nights with shots of Blue Fungid Beer

A Khordaldrum wedding is unlike any sort of celebration anywhere else on the Antarian Continent. It is a feast of many days, with continuous drinking of the deep ales the subterranean race brews. It is a marathon of fun and games, of singing the tales of the families and chanting the prayers of good luck, after which, of course, more ale is required in toasts.

Ah, toasting. Every member of each family seems to have something to add to whatever has been said already.
Advice passes.
Well-wishes too.
And in the quiet moment where everybody listens to the elders mumble their blessing, a unity is formed between strangers. After that, nothing is as it was. A family has expended, and a deal has been sealed. But never was pleasure mixed so well with business, as in the festivities of Khordaldrum matrimony.

Khordaldrum hardly ever marry out of love. Arrangements are made by families soon after a female Khord is born. The marriage of Kretarund Orehand and Befilda Shieldmaster was no exception. The Orehands and the Shieldmasters had planned this wedding since Befilda was a toddler. It was a great opportunity for both parties, since it would strengthen their positions as aspiring granite-distributors.
Kretarund and Befilda had met each other over the years, and had always known what was to happen. They rejoiced in it, for each appreciated the other very much. One could call it Love, but Khords are not quick to take that term in application.

The party was in full effect now. It was held at a special bar in the Warrens of Gunthras, where both families lived. The bar was a literal drinking hole at the base of the great Mushroom Forest, and founded by a Khordaldrum Druid who had died many ages ago. To enter ‘the Spores of Itanlok’, as the establishment was named, you had to descend into the earth, with a whirling staircase. It was like entering a rabbit’s nest, and the bar had every cosy aspect of such a place, including hay on the ground and the heavy smell of earth all around.
It was the second day into the wedding, and the official ceremony was already forgotten by most of the attendants. Kretarund and Befilda Orehand were sitting on a single big chair, taking in the festivities and whispering soft comments about the guests in each other’s ear over a mug of Dark Bellyfold.

“Look over there, me little pebble, it’s cousin Berodin. I hoped he would show up. There’s a family member to be proud of, ya know.”
“Oh, I’ve ‘eard of him alright. Important man in the church of Solanis, the light-God.”
“Right. Why he went that way and not the path of Lord Kharox is beyond me. We live underground, miners’ crusts! Oh, and there’s Uncle Grabrocks. Did y’see the enormous diamond ‘e gave us?”
“Pfff, it’s probably a fake. I’ll ask one of my Burrowfolk nephews about it. He’s a Gemhound. He’ll sniff the falseness right out of it.”

Kretarund gave Uncle Grabrocks a nice wave with his tankard of ale. He then turned back to his beloved.
“Hey, look! It’s Grothtorg! Let’s keep an eye on him. I’m want to ask him how he got that braid.”
“Yes, rocky-Bottoms,” Befilda said with less enthusiasm than her husband, “sure that will make a fine tale… oh, ‘ey, it’s that strange fella. ‘e got a crush on me when us was little. What was his name again… oh, that’s right: Baldorf. Always sneaked up on me without a sound.”
“He probably thought you smelled nice. I never thought he was that strang…. Oh you have to be kidding me! Did you invite ‘Loco’ Fungihammer to the party?!”
The groom had almost dropped his mug in astonishment.
Befilda followed his gaze and groaned. “Tyrannis’ Tits, I didn’t think ‘e would actually show up. You know ‘e saved some of me brothers? I couldn’t NOT invite him. Cost me quite a bit to track him down too. Let’s just hope ‘e will stay away from the beer.”
Kretarund laughed heartily at his wife’s remark. “We’re Khords. Of course he won’t stay away from the beer!”

To prove his claim he brought the Dark Bellyfold to his lips and dried it to the last drop. He flung the wooden mug to the ground and echoed a deep, satisfied burp over the heads of the crowd. Cheers went up and more than one reply sounded back at the couple. The bride and groom grinned at each other while Kretarund wiped the foam from his hair. It was a useless effort; after a full day of feasting, both their beards were saturated with all sorts of liquids already. By the same time tomorrow, they would be wringed out and the mix of ales would be caught in a jar, shaken and given to the crowd. Whoever would dare to drink it was said to be the next to marry. Everybody knew that the only thing one would get from it, was a certain gastric ulcer, but there were always guests bold or dumb enough to try.

The groom kissed his bride and went to the bar to order two new mugs of ale. As he walked through the crowd he was patted on the shoulder, jabbered at, and even hugged. The guests were truly letting go of their normally reserved social boundaries.
High spirited and slightly drowsy from the amount of fermented liquor, Kretarund grabbed hold of a familiar face and steamed a breathy “Hey there, haven’t seen you in a long time glad you could make it” into it.
The face, however, belonged to Jamdock Burrowfolk, who did not return the tipsy welcome. The gemhound stared at the groom with one bright eye (the other one had been replaced with a green emerald years ago).
“Sorry nephew, no time to chat. I caught me a scent… a possible trace. Leave me alone, and I’ll give ye my best-wishes later.”
Jamdock shrugged loose from Kretarund’s hold and disappeared in the crowd. Gemhounds were subterranean hunters, looking for fake or illegally marketed gems, and apparently the groom’s nephew was on the brink of discovering something. After a moment of disillusion at the unhappy meeting, Kretarund started to snort with incoherent laughter and made his way to the bar.

While waiting on his Farmboy’s Death ale, he looked around at the guests that were around. He noted a familiar face and old friend of the family, only at that point he couldn’t remember which family that was: Crulgrin Shadebeard.
“Hey Crully, old boy. How’re things over at the refinery? You still work there, right?”
He would’ve loved to listen to whatever Crulgrin had to say, but he got suddenly pulled away from the bar by a young girl in her mid-hundred’s and flung into a wild dance of Catch the Badger. More Khords joined in and soon the band of war-drum percussionists caught onto it. With the rhythm taking control of the crowd, even the most traditionally sober Khord could not help but tap his feet at the festivity dance. Kretarund and Befilda Orehand found each other in the middle of the crowd, and swirled, tapped, hopped and ducked with a rocky stiffness that graced the dance and the race that developed it.

Suddenly a loud explosion erupted from somewhere close to the bar, which made the ground shake and brought sand and dust misting from the ceiling. Heads turned, silence fell and everyone’s attention was on a Khord with a blackened face, who was holding what was left of two wooden mugs.
“My apologies,” he shied, then started laughing. They all knew who he was: Magnumopus Warpstone, one of the Servants of Fire and Stone; followers of Kharox that experimented in chemistry and ‘new weaponry’. A dangerous lot to be around. Apparently, he had been mixing different kinds of ale that did not fit together well.
Magnumopus looked around at the astonished faces of the Khords around him. They were as black as his own and equally unharmed. Still, he started brushing off the first person that came to hand: a wizard named Crellin Ironspark.
Kretarund and Befilda took a minute to stare at Crellin, who looked as if Kharox himself had randomly painted this little Khord in all the colours he could find. They shrugged, and dismissed the fact that he looked odd, blaming it on the amount of ale they had consumed.
The silence slowly faded. The band started playing and chatter restarted.

Kretarund and his bride started to meander back to their chair when they noted a deer on the dance floor. It was accompanied by a Khord they knew pretty well. Niaou’li Aniha was Befilda’s friend and one of the few female Khords to pursue the life of the druid. Niaou’li was the one who had suggested the use of ‘the Spores’ bar as a place to hold the celebration. They had been very pleased so far with the establishment and grinned widely at her.
“You know, Niaou’li,” Befilda started, “we’re so glad you’re here to feast with us.”
“But you really shouldn’t have brought that Sylvari …thing in here.” Finished Kretarund, pointing at the deer.
“Don’t mind him. He’s had a bit too much.” Befilda winked at her friend.
“Too much? This is our wedding! There is no ‘too much’ in a wedding. If I could I would get one of those tubes up my arm for an Ale pranstrusion or waddisitcalled, I would do it!”
Befilda dragged her husband away, and they found their chair laughing and stumbling.

“Bef,” Kretarund said, “this is the best wedding a Khord could wish for.”
And Befilda couldn’t agree more.

(OOC: this is the start of the game. You are all guests at this wedding and have been introduced. Vesper is the only one not in yet, because I don’t know if he’s still available. He has been PMed though. Good luck. I hope we’ll have fun together! )

"Ah, but here is the tricky part." the druid replied. "Cardista cannot do anything to stop Gubulondil, because he has the power to let go of his spell at all times. He has threatened Cardista to do so if she would interfere. But that is all I know. Perhaps there is more to it. Maybe not."

He turned to Tamuril then.

"People don't change their faith just like that. And the villagers cannot know about the danger. It is reasonable to assume that such information would be the final drop in their bucket of misery. They would leave. And I know that if the villagers leave, Gubulondil will let go of the tsunami the very instant they start packing. He won't let them go unpunished, even if it means the death of his followers."

Blbaobabl turned, and stepped back to the adventurers.

"Alright. If it will help you make up your mind, I guess there is no harm in giving you the big picture. You can make your decisions better if you know the facts of the matter."

From within his sleeve of starfish he drew a big white shell, and turned its curved side so they could see it was marked with the image of a high wave about to break.

"This is the symbol of Lady Cardista, the mother of the sea. It is said that long ago she was a passionate and proud Goddess, who danced and parted with the lands of men in a continuous struggle between love and hate. When at peace, she could be tranquil and serene. But raging storms of destructive waves sprang from her body on her angriest moments.

One day her fury was so big and wild that it became a being of its own, with long tendrils striking about itself so vigorously, they changed the flow of the ocean's waters. Thus, Gubulondil was born, God of the Current. Not many know of his existence these days, but he does still live and has dedicated followers, however few they are."

"Cardista had lost absolute reign over her waters, and now had to deal with this new diety. In an attempt to negotiate, she sent one of her avatars, who was captured by Gubulondil and forced to pray to him. The avatar escaped, and was found by a fisherman from this village. Gubulondil's anger was immeasurable, but he was not strong enough yet to do anything to avenge his beloved.”

The sea druid paused for a second, then the tone of his voice changed slightly.

“You see, Gubulondil is a creature of eternity. But unlike the other Gods he has a lifecycle. He grows older and more powerful, but then slowly returns to an infant stage. At the moment Cardista’s avatar was rescued by the fisherman, he was still gaining strength and power. He waited and grew, and after centuries he could finally unleash his wrath upon the village. He sent his magic across the ocean to form a destructive tsunami that would surely wipe the village from the face of Antaron.

But in the mean time, Iyaldar the mage had learned of the God’s schemes. He cast his magics upon himself and the heads of two powerful families. He changed their bodies and his own, to deceive Gubulondil, and started praying to the God of the Current in a hollow rock not far from the village’s coastline. Now Gubulondil was too proud to sacrifice his own followers in his rage, for the tsunami would’ve surely killed them too. Instead, he wove a web to ensnare his own magic. But the strength of the web is linked to the existence of his disciples. Should the manlizards die, the tsunami will be unleashed, and everything here will be gone.”

“Now you may understand why I chose not to take sides in this matter. There is no way out of this.”

The sea-Druid blinked at Driscoll’s remark, then jerked his head in a sudden shake, and blinked again. Then laughter flowed from his tongue in a awkward little waves.

“I’m sorry to disappoint you, sir. But I am no God of any kind.”
Then, more serious, he continued.
“My lady is Cardista, and her waters are neutral. To follow her ways I keep from picking sides. Now I know the situation is unfair for both parties here, but what hangs above the heads of the villagers should either side get the upper hand, is much worse. This is why Iyaladar made his sacrifice so long ago. He knew taking on the source was madness, and chose a path in the middle.”

(OOC: Sorry Ayrn, you can’t be right all the time. Nice try though. It could’ve just been that way. Don't discard the opportunity to have a chat with this guy though.)

Subject: there he is

There were more details to the chalk drawings then the adventurers noted before. However, there were several returning themes that caught Driscoll’s eye. First there was the sea, of course. But on many of the drawings a giant wave could be seen amongst smaller of its kind. Another returning aspect was a jelly fish with many tentacles that waved and swirled like the ocean itself. A third was a vortex that twirled out in opposing directions, with boats following its streams.

Iyaldar eyed them curiously as they examined the drawings. But his attention increased when Tamuril asked about the missing sword. He cocked his head and replied: “That sssword isss a very powerful instrument, with a will of itsss own. It wasss lost in the centuries we’ve lived down hhhere. Disappeared into the depthsss, I’m afraid.”

After a short goodbye, they headed back into the tunnel, where they conducted a plan of action. They were ready to solve this puzzle, whatever it would take. First on their list was an investigation of the items found in Iyaldar’s tower. Second was finding the peculiar sea druid.
But fate had different plans for them, for when they ascended the well, they were met by a lone figure. It was the sea druid, Blbaobabl, in his strange attire and the waterfall running from his scalp like hair in the wind.

“I have told you before, and I will tell you again: if the sea hasn’t interfered with the problems of the village yet, than why should you? Sometimes staying in between sides is best for everyone. And you HAVE chosen a side, haven’t you?”

Drakar has also been around. Hopefully he'll be able to join us after all.

It's been a few days since my last update. I was hoping to complete this adventure some time soon, and with the rate things were going lately that was likely to happen. This silence doesn't really help though. If you guys don't know what to do, at least move out of the lizards' lair. Indecision doesn't get us anywhere.

Hey guys,

I'm normally not one to interfere like his, but I would like to help you out a bit with some answers:

1 ) the potion of life is nothing more than a healing potion (CLW). That won't do any good, IF you were able to locate where the remains of the woman are.

4 ) the other lizardmen are offspring of the old family feudies (or however you want to call them). As you observe it now, they are all living very peacefully and quite happily.

5 ) good question. You could try to give HIM a braincramp?

Hope this is somewhat helpful.

Anyway... update is in. You guys have to figure out what to do with all the information you've been given, and what your next action will be.

And I updated the map of the lizards' lair:
