the Heart of Darkness
Some Shady Back Alley

~Positive Tide is normal
~Negative Tide is rising

The doorman regarded Percy coolly, then bent forward so his head came to her level.

“Very good, lass. That’s right. Now for part two of the test….”

He pointed at the Khord without taking his eyes from Percy’s.

“…kill him.”

After a pause of several seconds he straightened his back and smiled lazily.
“Nah, I’m just kiddin. You can enter.”

He stepped aside, and a smoky, dark hallway opened up for them. As they entered, the doorman looked at all of them. When Ocyari passed the man, he gave her a friendly wink. It was unusual for a child to enter the Heart of Darkness, but apparently the doorman guessed her value.

From the dark hallway they entered a dusky room, filled with smoke that whisped through the common room like a mist. It was an extra filter to hide what sober eyes weren’t meant to see. A long bar stood on the left, with a thin and mousy girl tending drinks and conversation. The tables in the establishment were cramped together, and almost all were occupied with people hunching close together in secret conversations. Black rimmed features bunched in dark corners, whispering unlaw and murder. Secrets were laid bare and covered up again, and the urge of ever watchfulness pressed the air. However, there were several individuals at tables towards the end of the room that leaned back in their chairs comfortably and spectated the comings and goings while enjoying their drink.

When the group entered, many eyes shot up at them, resting on them for longer than was pleasant. Especially Pao found himself the target of daring stares from a table with four pale skinned humans, who displayed their long fangs in eager grins.
But the attention was taken from the group when a bearded man in black entered, pushed passed them and walked up to the bar. He let a small leather pouch bounce on the wooden counter with a metal clank and demanded beer in a jolly voice. He obviously had something to celebrate.

I figured I wasn't clear enough... yes... everybody died... but not really.

Everybody is now awake... all the characters, including Malius, and except Alyssia.

You feel bad, broken, bruised and other words that start with a B that mean that you're not healthy. Otherwise you're fine.

And magical items have been removed. And Chris, you can't use your healing belt if you can't reach it. That means that it has been taken from you, as well as your clasp.

there it is: the update.

Give a warm welcome to Wyrmstring, people. He'll replace Alyssia with another Khordaldrum. Hopefully you'll all get along.

I've edited the first page a bit to show the latests changes:

- I've added XP for the battle, you've still earned XP for this.
- I've added Wyrmstring's character in the place of Vidar, who was once played by Skari-dono, but never made it far. I wanted to hang on to Alyssia... maybe something funny will happen with her later in the adventure... maybe not.

The Chakran Mnts
15th day of the 8th month: Temoth Ore
9:12 pm

After Geim’s spell had taken effect, Malius knew this was the time to react. He felt his life slipping away from him, but found a fury inside himself that would not kneel to pain. Down came his longsword upon the goblin, followed quickly by his shorter blade. The ranger spun around one time and let both weapons hit once more. This frenzied attack would’ve earned respect from any enemy. Both attacks with his longsword hit home, though his shortsword needed a little more precision. The foe they faced was dangerously wounded now, and realized it too. Instead of a furious attack, the goblin held back, using his axe to deflect attacks directed at him, perhaps to save time until the other forces would arrive.

Loda and Gothard both launched an attack simultaneously, their minds linked by more than experience and equal hatred for Goblins. They were growing closer with every fight they survived. Unfortunately, the goblin was too focused on dodging attacks, and with a quick duck he evaded gothard’s jump and stepped aside and parried an attack from Loda’s axe before she could hit him in a nasty place.

Elessarae now realized that a big part of this goblin’s strength lay in its connection to the Greataxe it was wielding. With a sudden burst she jammed her longsword at the weapon’s handle, hoping to slam it out of the creature’s grasp. But in a reflex, the unholy warrior swung his blade at her, and she almost ran into a death-trap. She thanked the gods for her training and came to a sudden halt, like so many times before in Megilindar Nost, only to return with a well aimed hack of her own blade. The two weapons clashed, and for a brief moment there was a struggle. Then the goblin regained control over his axe, by pure strength alone.

Thondrek was hurrying with a spell. He knew there was little time to spare but he needed all the accuracy he could get for his next plan. Releasing his spell upon himself he kept facing the battle and the goblins behind him. He would have to make a quick sprint now to stay in front of them, but he could not move until the True Strike took full effect.

Geimiedefher knew that waiting was not an option. He ran towards Loda and was ready to cure her wounds with Kharox’s blessing, but while he ran towards the goblin in a divertive maneuver he saw the creature grin. Before Geim had reached Loda, the goblin raised his axe high, and let it come down upon the grassy plane with a stunning force. The evil runes on the blade seemed to fall from the weapon, dropping red-hot onto the ground like embers from a smithy’s blast. But when they came down they exploded in a force that was not fire, but forged from pure death. The earth and grass beneath the blow were sent flying through the battlefield. Malius grasped his chest and fell down with staring eyes. Loda and Gothard both collapsed under the invisible blow of force. Elessarae, who had been closest to the goblin sank to her knees, and then face-forward into the upturned earth. Geim was almost knocked backwards, but remained standing. He saw his comrades fall dead around the goblin and stared at it in disbelief. The spell that the cleric had been readying was now best used on himself, for he too felt as if his belly had been split open and his head had been punctured with nails.
Only Thondrek stood far enough from the battlefield to not be affected, but he too saw in horror how the fight had suddenly turned ugly, how amidst his fallen companions the unholy goblin warrior stood screaming up to the heavens.

And then the goblins were all over them. Geim and Thondrek were too late to retreat (initiative wise), and could only try to stop the hordes from swarming them. Many goblins fell around them, the two Khordaldrum brethren. They fought with a might worthy of annotation in the tomes of the Grand Library. But eventually they tired, and the many cuts and bruises were too much for them to take. When a few orcs joined in the fight, they were lost, and everything turned dark.

Sore and broken they all opened their eyes. It was still night, or night again, and they found themselves in a metal cage. There hands were bound by thick ropes, their eyes blurry with pain. Beyond the bars of the cage, the night was only broken by a big fire that danced somewhere behind a sea of tents.
Around the cage stood more tents, barrels, and racks with weapons and shields. Dark shadows moved everywhere around them, and grunts and harsh laughter reverberated damply through the fields; they were in the goblin encampment. The cage they were sitting or lying in had wooden wheels, and only a single door with an intricate lock. On every corner of the cage stood a goblin sentinel, weathered and alert. But aside from the goblins, they were not alone in the cage. There were two others, one a Khordaldrum male, the other a strange humanoid with leathery wings and brown hair. The Khord was awake, but the other lay distorted and broken in a corner.

(OOC: You’ve been captured, and I don’t think I need to add that you guys don’t have any of your equipment, except armor, which the goblins didn’t bother taking off.)

well, it also has to do with his swim-suit. We saw something about it on msn-video.com. It's a new design that streamlines the body more, and is quite expensive. It's very possible that over the next years other countries will buy those designs and maybe even improve them. The race could be all open again.

But yes, 7 medals does reek of drug-use. It's just too freaking much for such a young dude. But you never know. Maybe it's the suit... maybe the guy already has an anatomical benefit that we don't know about. Maybe his technique is just better. It's too bad we have to wonder if sportsmen/women use drugs... that shouldn't be a question at all.

Miran did not answer the man immediately. Instead, he turned to his companions and sought their consult before making up his mind. Percifeer, however, was already trying to solve the test as it was. Her owl had been resting atop one of the gutters attached to the roofs overhead. Now it flew up, and descended just enough to get a clear picture of the group that stood talking a few yards away from the orphans. But it did not recognize any of the traits its master was asking for, and it sent a negative answer back before halting on a chimney.
But the companions could’ve gotten this answer for themselves. Although the other group was talking, the only one showing prolonged teeth was the Half-Orc, but they were tusks, not the blood-eager canines of a vampire.

Not responding to Miran’s indications, Percy continued with a detect magic spell. She concentrated, then opened her eyes.
There was definitely magic being used, though only faint or moderate in strength. There was a total of seven different magical aura’s among the group, and another, stronger aura came from the doorman, who was taking everything in with an understanding look. Each of the ‘occasional bystanders’ had a magical weapon, and there was one more item in the pocket of one of the humans. The doorman’s clothes seemed to be magical, and a strong aura came from a ring on his right hand, and from something behind his back which Percy could not see.

All in all interesting information, but it did not help them very much. It was Pao who came with another idea, and though it did not include arcane magic, it was one that could possibly bring them into the tavern. He prayed to Lysora, the Sacred Mother, for her aid in this. Surely the patron of Healing would understand the reasons one of her Children wanted to enter a tavern as shady as the Heart of Darkness?

And indeed, when Pao completed his casting he perceived the notion of an undead’s presence. After a bit more concentration he focus his feeling and perceived a strong aura of unlife around the Khordaldrum. This was not a foe to underestimate, and as Pao concentrated more, he realized the Khord wasn’t the only undead in the area. Although the only one in the group, several other aura’s reached the Cleric’s perception from within the tavern, and from the houses surrounding it. They were too faint to locate precisely, but the notification was enough to tell Pao that a follower of Lysora better watch his step.

Indeed, I forgot about that one

Since I ended my last update with the fact that he still looks ready to take on anything you want to throw at him, I'll rule that you're using the dimension hop. Unless he dies before that. We do have 4 attacks in one round from Malius coming up, who has favored enemy (goblinoid). Ouch!

Ok... maybe I should've specified more clearly... or maybe YOU should've, Sui... exactly where your owl was. You have to remember that this is an online game, and I can't keep track of every single detail, as much as I am trying to do that. I will withdraw my last post, since it doesn't apply, and will post a new one, once you specify how close exactly your owl gets, and what it is exactly you want it to do. Do you expect it to designate which one is the vampire? Percifeer can see the targeted group just as much as the owl, and there are no fangs sticking out of any of the mouths. Once I know precisely what the owl is supposed to do, I will react with an answer that is suitable. You do realize that this test is not taken lightly, I hope. And Sib is right: you're only level 4. Don't expect the rest of the world to be of lower level than you. If you really think that, than you're going to face some serious trouble inside this tavern.

ONE thing that I really want you to remember though: don't insult me. You saying that I'm making rules and things up as we go is an insult to my integrity. I'm running this game for entertainment, but it is RULES based, and I'm not making these rules, they were made for us. I hope from now on you'll be able to keep your dumb remarks to yourself, otherwise I will not continue. I didn't come here to get insulted for my efforts to provide a good game.

And if you're angry over the rate of success Percy has with her attempts, maybe you should look at her actions, and reconsider the impulsive self-confidence that she uses and replace it with more logic. And if you're arguing against that by saying that such is not her character, than you have no right to be angry at all.

I apologize for my harshness, but I don't take lightly to this kind of remarks.

Yes, Chris... that was not clear to me. That might work, IF you can make the attack alright.
But I just realized something. I don't think you have any Dimension Hops left, since you used a bunch of them with the rocks on the goblins. We never specified how many you used, but I would say it is assumable that you saved one of your four 2nd level spells, and you used that one to get on the wyvern.

In other words... you will have to come up with another plan. Dimension Hop doesn't go on endlessly.

And about the Axe: yes, it has a wooden handle.

I must be tired... but I don't understand what you're saying. You are going to drop down the next round? You're willing to take the fall damage a second time? It would still be about 30 feet to the underlying path, after your dimension hop.

"Very well then." the man stated evenly. For the first time since the door had opened he shifted his weight. A big arm came up and pointed at the group of people that was standing a few yards away from the entrance. There were three Humans, one Khordaldrum (dwarf), one Sylvari and one Half-Orc standing, conversing among each other or hanging against the walls listening.

"See them? One of them is a vampire. If you can tell me which one, without approaching or talking to them, you can enter. But you get only one chance, and only one of you can answer."

"Is it going to be you?" He asked Miran.

Geim can definitely make it to the 'main combat' and heal somebody in a single round.

As for the protection... that's a good question. Perhaps I would allow a Spellcraft check... but it would be a really high DC. You have to remember though, that using a skill like that takes up either a move or a standard action, in both cases you cannot heal anymore.

So it's your decision: healing, or spellcraft.

The door-man eyed Ocyari for a moment, but dismissed her accepting call. He didn't say anything to her, because the others seemed hesitant to let the child participate anyway. Instead, he turned his attention to Miran, who remained courteous. A very smart move.

"So you're interested in the Dark Powers test, right? I'm afraid I can't say much until you've made the choice, but I can give you a hint. You won't need your weapons, or even come close to your target with that one."

And with a wide grin he added: "And no, I won't be that target, or the test. I'll be your judge for tonight.
Now... what do you choose. If you're just going to stand here I'm going to close the door again. I'm hearing complaints that there is too much smoke escaping the building."

tactical skills would definately be a good addition.

Bardic knowledge will give you information about goblins, and that you're most likely facing an unholy warrior, or paladin. In goblin society, these warriors have a higher status than the average brute, and are trained to be champions of whatever god they worship. Perhaps playing to his vanity and godliness would help?

that is a very nice comment, Dragon M, but I'm sorry to inform you that this is not how it works. You come up with ways to kill your opponents yourself. I roll for this kind of information, if you have a skill or feat that would give you this kind of information.
If I help you in this situation, the next time you get a riddle, you'll roll int to see if your character solves it. The whole point in the game is that you get through tough situations and that you and your characters learn from them, right?
