Inhabited Cave

28th day of the 7th month: Pfier

While the fishmen stood there, watching Vidar, the Khord had a moment to look around.
The cave was enormous, but in the faint light and with help of his darkvision, he could perceive small side-caves and little crevices fenced with stalactites. Not too far from the puddle he lay in, he could hear more water dashing in soft ripples.

“Does anyone speak a word or a dialect maybe of the Common tongue?" he inquired, but no reaction came. Then, suddenly, the fishmen looked over their shoulder and back at Vidar. They had glanced at a section of the cave where a large body of water lay. Then they scattered into several directions.

The water started to rise, then opened up to reveal a huge fishlike head with three eyes. Tentacles split from the surface and started waving around angrily. It was too far to reach Vidar, but he could feel its presence pressing on him. The fishmen that had scattered reappeared from their hiding places. They walked straight at Vidar, this time with a vicious stare and claws ready.

The lady of the store looked at Elessarae and smirked.

“It’s a shame dear. Ten gold pieces will buy you a whole lot of things, but for these maps you’ll need a little more than that. Still, I will see if I can get my husband to make you a simple scroll with the major parts. Come back in an hour.”

Elessar and Comrade left the store and returned after said time. The Sylvari lady stood waiting for her, with a scroll in her hand. On it were the most important cities and towns of the Sylvari Empire, drawn hastily in ink. With a red pigmented juice, roads had been added, and the whole thing was covered with charcoal in dark and light intensity, indicating thick and lighter forest. It was not a work of art, but it wasn’t sloppy either. The lady of the store put a thin piece of cloth over the map and rolled it up. She explained the cloth could be removed once the map is completely dry.

Now Elessar had a map, and she was ready to continue her quest.

(OOC: You’re free to do other things in the hour that you had to wait.)

25th day of the 7th month: Pfier
9:13 pm

In the orange glow of the descending sun, a large bulky creature scurried through the trees. Its hulking mass was a dark silhouette between the trunks, and not hard to spot.
Lanelion had been waiting for this sight to pass. He saw the badger’s familiar form coming closer to the tree he was sitting in. He knew his task was to call out now, but he felt fearful of this creature. It had destroyed tree-homes before, and was capable of climbing. Therefore he slid down silently, and sprinted away.

Loda was sitting in the south east corner of the village. She felt certain that this was the place where the badger was going to strike. Her companions were scattered through the village, in hearing distance. Gothard was laying next to her, peering around theatrically.

Suddenly the village hunter Lanelion came running up to her from the bushes. He was panting heavily, and his face was pale as a corpse.

“It’s coming this way!” He grabbed Loda by the shoulders and shook her heavily. “It’s coming this way, I tell you!”

The Khord didn’t linger a second, and called out to her companions. Through the trees and bushes she could hear her call being echoed on, and one by one her allies gathered. Lanelion pointed them in the right direction.

They found a path of broken twigs and leaves where Lanelion had seen the creature. Malius’ keen sense of the woods and his tracking skills came in handy now, and they started following the tracks. Perhaps they would lead them to the badger’s lair.

Then suddenly the ranger’s leg sank into the ground to the knee. The ground before him burst open and a large, furry beast covered in a cloud of dirt erupted from a hole. It was the badger, but not the small cuddly version that was only a menace to insects and worms. This thing was wicked, with strong muscles, and strange growths of bone sprouting from its body. It was as big as a human, and its eyes saw only death. With full force, it threw itself upon Malius.
One claw thrust the ranger upon the hard forest floor while the other raked its nails over his face. They were all taken off guard, and the impact of the attack almost knocked Malius unconscious. The creature let out a terrifying shriek in defiance of the group.

(OOC: Of course I had to roll a critical on my surprise attack. Sorry Tann, Malius is now on about half of his HP, but you’re no longer pinned to the ground. You were all surprised, but assuming that you all had weapons ready, you’re now up for round one!)

I only have two posts in, plus something that could vaguely be called a plan.

If the main group wants to have at least some advantage, I need more than: We will explore the SE area. Of course, if that's how the plan is, it's fine by me.

There is the option of casting the alarm spell, Malius has one bonus 1st level spell, and he could choose to cast it. But it's only 20 foot radius, so the chance that a creature will walk through it is small. I need decisions by tomorrow, otherwise I'll make up my version of events.

It couldn't be possible. Elandor was practically jumping with glee. He was indeed talking to an enormous freaking bug! Who else in the history of kender had ever accomplished such an amazing feat of adventuring? This was even better than the explosive cow-burp-tale that uncle Riddlecracker used to resite around the fires.

"Well met, Ksssh-the-Kakatoo. I'm sorry for intruding, but we were sent here by captain Hurger of El-Jalnine. The thing is, you've scared some people with your facetted eyes and your antennae. Perhaps you sneaked up on them, like you did me, you know. And they didn't mean any harm either."

He did his best to talk slowly, but the excitement was pushing him forward.

"Did you know that these buildings were not really meant for people to live in any more? They have a sentimental and historical value to the people of El-Jalnine. Perhaps it's better if you find another place to live?"

Subject: the tunnel, the plan, the map

Inhabited Cave
South-west Chakran Mtns.
28th day of the 7th month: Pfier
12:38 am

Vidar took a deep breath, exhaled, and took another, deep gulp of air. He knew that going down wasn’t going to be the hard part. But the tunnel had to go up eventually. He let himself glide into the water and for the last time filled his lungs with oxygen. Then the water engulfed him and the warrior moved head first towards the light. The hair of his beard wavered into his face, but as he struggled to gain speed, his vision cleared.
Before him stretched a dimly lit, underwater tunnel. He could now spot the light source, a rock on the tunnel’s bottom with fluorescent weed growing on it. He made his way towards the light, dragged down by the weight of his armor and shield.
The weed-covered stone lay a good 20 feet below the surface, but from there the tunnel went upwards again. Vidar pushed with his arms and legs against the pull of his armor. He still had plenty of air in his lungs, but he realized the way up would take a heavy toll. And he had told himself to go back while he still could.

As he swam deeper into the tunnel, he realized it was getting wider. Few seconds later he saw a light above him, though it was still far away. Now he could feel his lungs straining to keep the air inside. This was the moment he would have to go back. But since his goal was within reach, he was not going to give up. With a few heavy strokes he tried to go up to the surface, but his armor was now dragging hard on him. The farther he went, the heavier it became. His lungs burnt now, his muscles ached. Then, one of his hands grabbed air as it swung through the water. He had reached another cave. But he was exhausted, and slowly sank lower into the tunnel again.

Just when he thought he had reached an ending unworthy of a hero, he felt himself being pushed up. Vaguely, he could see the form of a scaled arm. Then he burst out of the water and crashed onto the rocky floor of another cave.

It was enormous. With watery eyes, he could see few torches lining a wall as long as a mountain. His vision was blocked by the legs of six fishmen, who stared at him emotionless.

Although not everyone in the group was too eager to aid the villagers, the adventurers agreed to help solve their problem. They were given the hut they had been brought into as base of operations. There was a small food supply there, and bottled wine and water, all for consumption and common use. A little inspection revealed ink and pressed leaves for writing, a small map of the town and, to Thondrek and Loda’s joy, a set of tools that could be used for brewing.

One of the town’s hunters came in and introduced himself as Nanelion. He informed them of the usual whereabouts of the badger. He pinpointed the locations of frequent sightings and indicated that it came closer into the town every night.

“Do you have any real plan yet?” He asked.

Ruan directed her towards Sillarion, and after that advised her to head for the Flower Castle, cross the river of Floating Flowers, and make for Flame Keep. After that it was over the River of Fairy Footprints and ultimately up to the Moonlit Tower.

With the directions caught in her memory, she drove Gharion and the young moonhorse, now named Comrade, towards the Aerie of the High King. There she would find a map-maker, for the town of Tinechur didn’t bare one.

Her trip was calm and the grounds well-known by now. It made her go faster, for she didn’t have to waste time finding the right way to go. In record time she arrived at Sillarion, its high towers impressing her once more. In the densest area of the city, still overgrown and a cultivated integration of the forest, she found a map-maker and bookseller. A big holy symbol hung above the door, portraying the opened book of Jusarin. A woman nodded her welcome from behind a desk, and inquired Elessar’s interests.

Moments later they were standing in an almost empty section of the store. Scroll-cases big and small hung horizontally from the ceiling, and maps of all sorts lined the wall. They were of the finest quality; well detailed and clear, their paper bound to endure the worst of weathers. The woman pulled on one of the scroll-cases with a special stick, and down rolled a small map of the Sylvari Empire. It listed the main towns, cities and towers, and displayed the common roads.

“I think this is what you’re looking for? It’s relatively cheap for a work of art. This would be an adventurer’s finest companion, accept of that moonhorse of yours, of course. I believe he’s interested in the gardening section of our literature department.” She added with a smile.

“The map is 130 gold pieces.”

But, we have a special item that might have your interest, and cover the rest of the expenses. It is an old holy symbol of Kith-Jora, said to be blessed with special powers. Lady Quilanday and her warrior friend were silent for a while. They exchanged glances and nodded at each other.

“Yes,” Ruan of Hyanda Nost said, “we’ve heard of wicked creatures popping up in the forest. It happens more frequent lately. Though we weren’t aware of the kind of owls you describe. I will warn my people of this foul tongue they possess.”
He left their table after bowing to both women.

Elessar’s fellow bladesinger suddenly slammed her fist on the table. Her anger sent plates wobbling and glasses were knocked over.

“This upsets me greatly. I will contact Meglindar Nost this very evening, and ask to be assigned the investigation into this matter. I will write Gyvontill as well, asking about your mission. We will have an answer in the morning.”

She left, and came back a good fifteen minutes later. The evening continued. Ruan also returned, and they enjoyed a tasty meal together, and some glasses of wine.

The next morning Elessarae woke up to a hard knocking on her door. It was Lady Quilanday, armoured and ready to leave Tinechur. She handed Elessar a small note, and told her that an eagle had dropped it off earlier. The lady herself had to leave, for she had been assigned with investigating the strange, twisted animals.
The note wasn’t very long. Only a few words had been hastily scribbled on the paper.

Continue quest. No report needed now. Make haste.

The ruins proved to be quite exciting to the little kender. He wondered what all had happened here, and how long these ruins had been left to crumble up. As he walked along the stone walls, he could almost imagine their vibrant days. He stayed close to the shadows, and ducked away like people were actually passing. He imagined the eyes of the desertfolk darting his way, moments after he went by. In his mind, a royally dressed man paced the long corridor, purses full of coin dangling loudly.

Then the walkway opened up, and the rest of the ruins were revealed. This was a truly amazing experience. It was like stepping into a forgotten civilization, like their encounter with the city of glass. Again his mind started taking him off to where people still walked the four halls and the ring of stone. He moved forward when suddenly he heard a noise behind him.
Gone were all the imagined people, gone were the sounds and smells. What remained was an insect creature, vaguely humanoid in shape. And it was looking straight at Elandor.

“Oh, hullo.” The kender stated. The creature’s eyes peered at him, studied him silently. Elandor thought it was pretty rude, but didn’t want to embarrass the thing. The creature probably didn’t know any better. Perhaps it was better to wait with confronting this insect-man, and comfort him first. By chance, Elandor was a master of pleasant conversation.

“This is a marvellous place, don’t you think so? Is it your home? I must say it is mightily impressing. I understand why you live here. But I’m wondering what you eat. I always heard that insects eat plants, but there aren’t a lot of plants in the desert. Or maybe you grow your own crops inside that building over there, to keep the sun from frying them during the day? You don’t say much do you? Perhaps you’re just shy. That’s alright. I would be shy if I had antennae on my head too. You never know what people think of you if you’re different, right? They always seem to underestimate you, or something. Anyway, I’m not underestimating you, if that’s what you’re thinking right now. Are you thinking that right now?”

The positive words that followed the elder’s plea for help brightened his face.

“Falloes be praised. We’ve prayed for able fighters to help us. We’re simple commoners, and do not fare on the fields of battle. Let me acquaint you with our hospitality.”

He led them through the village, which proved to be nothing big or exceptional. The architecture was pure Sylvarian though, and beautiful in its organic simplicity. The elder took them to one of the larger buildings, which was half buried in the ground. They descended a small stairway, and entered a room used for village councils, recreational activities and hosting guests. They were seated on a large table, and treated with fresh bread and water by some of the villagers.

The elder himself sat down with them, and started explaining what their problem was exactly.

“Five weeks ago, we heard a rumour of a terrible hare running rampage in a village only two days away on foot. Apparently the animal had been possessed by evil spirits of the woods, hungry for blood and grown in size. When three weeks ago, one of our children was found slashed, and…” he stopped for a second, gulping loudly.
“Well, we thought it was the hare that had found our village. But later that week, we sighted a badger, preying on our sheep. He was larger than anything we’ve ever seen.”

At that moment a Sylvari woman came in, her face covered partially by a veil of leafs. The elder looked up for a moment before continuing.

“Rovannya is one of the few who escaped the wrath of the creature. She swears its eyes glow in the dark. The homes at the outer rims of our village aren’t safe anymore. Some have been destroyed, others are no longer inhabitable. So far, the creature hasn’t dared enter the village centre yet, but soon it will cross that boundary too. Will you grant us peace and kill this devil? We will reward you with all we have.”

Although his words meant nothing to the fishman, pointing at the weapon on the wall got the creature in motion. Slowly, to show no hostility, it moved forward and slipped past Vidar. The bulbous eyes of the thing seemed to suck in the Khord’s face as it passed, and a sadness spread from them. Then it looked the other way.

The creature halted at the puddle, where two of its kinsmen had disappeared, and pointed downwards.
In the light of the torch above the water, Vidar could see his own reflection and the warm glow from above. But as he looked deeper into the liquid, he saw another light, shining somewhere far below. This puddle was no superficial host of water, it was a tunnel that went farther than he could see. The light in the depth showed him that it made a curve.

The fishman pointed at the water again, and peered at Vidar. Would the Khord dare to enter?

(OOC: The fishman cannot tell you in any way how far the tunnel goes, or how deep it is. It doesn’t understand you enough, & most likely uses no measuring for distance.)

Confusion grabbed the elder’s smile and stomped it down hard. When the Khords had eagerly agreed on being his expected sell-swords, the Sylvarian had been ready to take them in and treat them with a warm welcome.
But now a dark human had stepped up and declared they were not the ones he took them for.

“So… so…” he stammered, “you were not sent by the farmers to help kill the badger?”

He looked at the Khords with a discouraged expression.
“But your… comrades here…. they seemed willing enough to help, right?”
The Syl truly was losing his composure.

“Please, I beg you. You carry weapons and scars of experience. Help us out. We cannot wait another week. Who knows when he’s going to appear next!”

Urvanial did have answers for the bladesinger, and as she rode Gharion home, she went over them in her head.

The druid had affirmed her supposition. He too thought the swarm of owls had been drawn to the tower as a result of the dead one Elessar had brought there. It was too obvious to be a mere coincidence. Perhaps it carried a smell or essence the owls could perceive from great distances. Now the feathered menaces were all dead, they would never know.
To her next question, Urvanial had put his hands on the young moonhorse, and closed his eyes. Seconds later he opened them again and shook his head, smiling slightly.

“You’ve found a stubborn little companion, lady Elessarae. He refuses to inform me of his name, but tells me he waits for his new guardian to give him one. He says in time, you’ll find him a name that suits you both.”

To her last question Urvanial told her that no wand could be recharged. She would have to buy a new one eventually.

The next day she mounted Gharion, packed, warm and fully revived. She followed the Rilma Duin all the way back to Tinechur, payed a visit to the local Inn, the ‘Pines Reaching”, where she stumbled into a familiar face. Lady Quilanday, this time not dressed up as an orc, sat in the common room exchanging heated whispers with a Sylvari man unknown to Elessar. As soon as the bladesinger entered, Quilanday stood up in surprise, and beckoned her to come over.

“Lady Elessarae Isiliri, what a surprise to see you here! Come sit with us. This is Ruan…” she indicated the man on the other side of the table, “high ranking officer at Hyanda Nost, in Alloryen.”

She lowered her voice a little so that only the two of them could understand what she said next: “I didn’t expect you here. Didn’t Gyvontill send you on a special mission? Are you returning already?”

(Lady Quilanday urges you to pursue your quest before returning to the Keep. She tells you Gyvontill will not be happy to see a new Bladesinger return without fulfilling what she was sent to do.

Kharolis Mountains
East base of the mountains
24th day of the 7th month: Pfier
9:17 pm

The fight was over, wounds were healed, conversations made. One by one the adventurers let themselves drown into the realm of Valdorn. The God of Dreams pestered them with twisted visions of the past evening: sickles piercing flesh, engulfing gusts of flame and old men turning into young demons with red eyes.

The next morning they got up early, though still weary from the evening before. Geimiedefher, Thondrek and Loda spent some time preparing their spells for the day (spell-lists please). This gave the rest of the group some time to discuss the route they would take. Malius listened with half an ear. He was working with his two ferrets. Though they were playful creatures who chose to be with him, he was trying to teach them some tricks. One day they would become more than simple companions, and he might need their aid.

When the sun was starting to peek over the tops of the Ela-Isthel trees, they were already on their way. The forest was peaceful in the morning chill. Birds sang of joyous times, the first squirrels opened their eyes and beams of light bathed everything in a golden glow. The woods seemed vibrant, pulsing with life, and the journey was a pleasant one so far. Two hours later they encountered a small stream. Its water flowed fresh and babbled like the laughter of a Sylvarian maiden. They were able to fill their skins with fresh liquid, or cool their heads.

Around midday they found the first hints at Sylvarian civilization. A flock of sheep was grazing in a clearing, under the fine tunes of a pan-piping shepherd. He greeted them by nodding his head from the other side of the clearing. Minutes later they stumbled upon what must be his home: a wooden hut between the trees, sheepskins drying on a rack, a Sylvari mother and two children engaged in a game of Snap the Beetle. They too nodded their heads at the strangers.

Another hour went by. They spotted more homes, some built in the trees, some on the ground, some halfway in the bottom of the forest. Right when they thought they were passing into a less inhabited part of the woods, a Sylvari man of middle age stood before them. He was dressed in common clothes and bore a staff topped with a full vine curled in a circle and a dark stone in the middle. Those familiar with Sylvari traditions realized he was a village elder, appointed ruler of a small population of Syls. His expression was one of humbleness, but with a hint of eager anticipation in it.

“You must be the sell-swords that come to deal with our problem? The human farmers said you guys wouldn’t be here in a week! My gratitude for making haste.”

for Vidar and Elessarae. I have to go to the store now. When I come back I'll do the main group. Perhaps by then Valimar and Vesper have posted? Fat chance...

Inhabited Cave
South-west Chakran Mtns.
28th day of the 7th month: Pfier
12:37 am

Large bulbous eyes looked at Vidar in submission. Everything in the fishman’s posture hinted at complete harmlessness. But the Khord would not be fooled. For all he knew, this creature was reading to jump him.
He interrogated the humanoid, about their reasons to attack him, but the creature did not respond. He requested to know the whereabouts of the ones that escaped, but he got no answer. He threatened the fishman, but to no avail. The thing just stared at him dumbfounded.
When he was through with his threatening, the fishman opened its thick lips and let out a stream of gurgles and syllables that sounded like a stream of water. It was nothing the Khord could understand, but then a gesture came. The fisman pointed at the wall.

Following its direction Vidar noticed writings and drawings on the wall. Apparently the fishmen had used their spare time to put some of their most present ideas and experiences to image. With a thick clay, lines were made into letters of an unknown alphabet. Images of fishmen on land and in the water were scattered over the rocks. A big fishlike creature with tentacles and three eyes returned several times.
And then, in the middle of this random artistry, was the drawing of a scroll. And on that scroll stood a series of martial weapons: two swords, a dagger, a halberd, a hammer, and a very peculiar axe.

(OOC: If you want to interrogate the fishman more, you can, but he will not react in any other way than with expressions of fear.)

Londelirinen Kingdom
Aerie of the High King
Urvanial’s tower
26th day of the 7th month: Pfier
1:26 pm

While the young moonhorse nudged its nose into her arms, Elessar took out her wand of healing. She had used many of its charges already. How long would it last her, if she kept tumbling from one fight into another? It seemed like as soon as she was allowed into the order of the bladesingers, trouble had found her. Or perhaps it was only now that she found the strength to see what was wrong in the woods?

She put the wand against her ribs and let its healing magic flow. The wounds and scratches closed, but pulsed still. She now felt numbed, as if she had stayed awake for several days in a row. But it was an improvement of how she had been. With the moonhorse’s aid, she got up and climbed the ladder.

The next floor was covered in feathers, chunks of molten flesh and nails. The room looked like a fire had exploded and destroyed everything within reach. The walls were black and smudged with blood and gore. Still, next to the window lay the plant Urvanial had been tending to earlier. It was intact, unharmed by the flames like the druid himself.
Elessar sped to the Syl. Her wand was ready in an instant, but it took several charges before the man could stand on his feet without aid. His face was still pale, his clothes torn. The bladesinger looked at herself, and realized she too was showing more skin than she normally would.

“We will find ourselves some new clothes and some refreshments.” Urvanial spoke. “I am very grateful for your aid, Lady Bladesinger. I can feel that we’ve freed the forest of a heavy burden, now the owls are dead. Though I must add that we are nowhere near cleansing it completely. I must urge you to take great care, when you ride again.”

Together they descended the tower once more, supported by Kher, the shovel wielding assistant and Telliri, whose wounds had been partially healed by the Khord. In a nearby building they had the opportunity to bath, and Elessar was given some new clothes; a more luxurious version of what she had been wearing. During a short meal they had the opportunity to talk about what had happened. Urvanial was convinced that the majority of the demonic owls had been destroyed now. He urged Elessar to move on with her quest, and keep her eyes open at any time for attacks from these strange creatures.

(OOC: The druid also slips you a pouch with coins (15 GP) as a token of appreciation, and a potion of Cat's Grace. You are free to leave where you want, visit parents or continue with Elessar's quest.)

Subject: alright

We'll be waiting for your post, though if it's not there on Saturday afternoon (my afternoon, sooner than yours) I'll update, and Malius will just spend his time checking on his two ferrets. Is that ok? I don't want to rush you, but I also want to keep my saturday schedule since it seems to be working well so far.

And Val, is that your idea of humor? Posting in a different colour when we just discuss that? Anyways... post, since Jozan posted already, and it involves Draven.
