I'm looking for 2 people who are willing to join a new group of adventurers who are destined to become The Monster Hunters Collective!!

Unfortunately, one of my players has dropped out, and YeOlde's loss is hard on all of us. Hopefully there are brave adventurers out there, who are able to join in on the fun with a character of their own.

The group has almost returned back to their hometown from their first encounter/adventure, and this is THE moment for new recruits to join in their cause.

Before you reply, read this:
The initial recruitment post.
The first post in this link is essential, since it holds mostly all the information on what kind of character I'm looking for. Read it carefully, and let me know if you're interested.

Subject: Shadow Wolf

After a short while, the group got back together at the creature’s nest. Ta’nil was eager to follow the beast and finish it, but the others were less hasty in their pursuit. They were all still pretty shaken from the sight of the monster pulling the skin back from its head, except for Geron and Traubon, who were pretty shaken from what happened after that. The old warrior was leaning heavily on his longsword and almost fell backwards from Aly’s frightful hug. He regained himself though, and comforted the young Cidal woman as best he could.

When everything had settled down a bit, they debated for a while, contemplating whether or not to return to the town, to stay in the forest and camp, or go after the beast right now. Eventually it became clear that the majority of the group was ready to return home before the night really claimed the forest. Geron was in a bit of a twist, since he was set on killing the beast, but also reasoned that they would have a much better chance of slaying it in daylight.

And so they retraced their steps and made their way back to the forest road. The darkness enhanced the sounds of the forest. The air was crisp and it eagerly carried sounds of bugs and creaking wood, warping them such that the adventurers tensed every time and expected the monstrous creature to jump out from the bushes that lined the road with every deer-nibbled leaf.

They could see the lights of Stone’s Hollow’s closest buildings in the distance when the sounds suddenly ceased. They had felt watched and jumpy while on the road, but now a new kind of terror struck them. This was not the kind of fear children felt when a nightmare haunted them. It was the kind that came with the realization that the nightmare was real, and coming for you.

Before them, blocking out some of the far off lights, a dark shadow stalked from the tree-line and positioned itself between the Monster Hunters and their destination. It limped a bit, but was otherwise silently stealthy as a cat. They recognized the monster they had been trying to find the whole day, though they could not discern any of its features in the cloudy night. And suddenly they understood where the description of ‘shadow wolf’ had come from. In the absence of light it seemed to hit the mark perfectly.

Slowly the creature approached, then suddenly launched itself at the group.

(OOC: Just when you think things quiet down, they suddenly drop themselves on you. You guys should be able to handle this thing. As it approaches, you can see it is still quite wounded, and for now we’ll assume that both Jethro and Ryan are part of the team.)

Update is in. Hope you guys will enjoy it.

Also: Ad did a spellcraft check: Glitch realizes the effect the creature had on the group was much like a wizard's Scare spell, but was itself not magical. It was superscary though.

I'm still wondering what to do with Ryan. I think he'll just leave the group and head for undetermined lands when you all get back to Stone's Hollow.

I'm with Ody. This will be your decision and it will be fine either way. This game has been fun so far, but with the recent developments, I can understand you ending it.

Besides, if you are thinking of another game, chances are that you are much more enthusiastic about that than continuing Rautenberg. And that's only logical and fine.

So, it's up to you.

We've hit a tiny speed bump, people. Loki quit, YeOlde can't post because of personal reasons and Admiral seems to also be in a tight spot at the moment. Real life happens, but how do we deal with it?

I'm going to PM Dragonblood again, and I'll approach Jing to inquire if she's still interested.

As far as the game goes right now, I'll be updating on Monday if possible. So far, nobody has reacted to Ayrn's suggestions. If no reactions come, I'll update the game as I see fit. So if you want to have any control in the outcome of my update, now's the time to speak/post.

Subject: answers

YeOlde has some health issues, I believe, and Loki is no longer a part of this game, since he resigned.

I've asked Dragonblood, since he's next on the waiting list. He will let me know if he's still interested.

As for your questions:

1: The only items you see lying in the nest without searching are the torn clothes of the latest victim, and a small pouch with 12 silver coins in it.

2: The fear effect was due to the fact that this monster pulled the freaking skin back from it's head. That's more than enough to make a normal villager faint. You guys did good in that you only fled.
(As a DM I add to that: it wasn't magical, but what would be the difference?)

Subject: Yes... that

Well, it's like Ayrn says: this is the part in the game where you would normally take a moment to converse with each other on what to do next.

So, if you don't know what to post concerning the fear part, post something about the return of your character, and what his/her intentions are at this moment in the game.

Please note that the fear effect is gone, and while your character may still be a bit frightful, it doesn't otherwise influence functions and abilities. While you all had a good scare (which is logical for commoners), this will be an event that shapes you to be less frightful the next time. This is Experience and experience makes you level in normal D&D games.

Hey Guys,

Loki has messaged me that he will not continue this game, as he didn't find it to his liking. That happens, and it sucks to lose a players so early.

I've PMed Dragonblood if he's still interested in playing.

I don't know if I'll be able to update tomorrow, since it's my mom's birthday. Update maybe as late as Thursday. Which gives you all time to post.

Also, I feel a bit bad for cutting the update short where I did, since it is kind of a sore spot to post to as a player. Let me know if you guys can't handle it, and I can update a bit further. I do need to know you guys' actions though.

Hope.

It's just a word.

But not in the mouth of Ab-rak Al-bomama. The head paladin of the U-stated Knights is preaching his message all over the land, and people are falling under his spell. He thinks he's using his growing power for the good of men, but is he really?

Behind the campaign lies a dark riddle, woven by the ancient sorcere George UU Shrubbery, but it's intricate and will take the most hopeless adventurers to solve it.

Next adventure: A Hill Giant's Moshpit

Hey People,

I've decided that for now I'm going to make Monday my official update day. I have time then, and it gives you all the time to get something in over the weekend.

Remember, if you can't make the deadline for whatever reason, let me know.

I PMed Loki, but haven't heard from him in a while. Anybody know what he's up to?

PS: I know that I asked a very difficult thing of you all. Describing your character overcome by a fear effect is hard. Not only because it involves involuntary retreat, but also because it is quite abstract in d&d terms. I'm curious to see what you all come up with.

Hammer! Good to see you've returned!

I saw that you were looking to revive Loco. I don't think 'I' have a place for another character right now, and I'm not starting any new games soon. Really sorry about that. Would've loved another shot at DMing the shroom-inspired Khord.

Hopefully you'll find room for him in another game? There are plenty starting up at the moment. Shouldn't be too hard to find something you like.

Anyway, glad you're back!

Subject: mother knows best

The beast growled defiantly as the members of the hunters’ party made up their minds about the best course of action.

Ryan reacted before any of them, surprising even the beast with his swift determination. Moving to a tactical position on the creature’s right flank, he let his rapier flash toward it. His aim was unfocused though, as the heat of the combat took him.

As Ryan missed his target, the creature took a step out of harm’s way, and arched its back. Then it suddenly snapped its head forward and let out a terrifying screech that sent shivers down the group’s spines. But the nightmarish sound was nothing compared to what happened to the beast itself. As it opened its jaws to screech, the skin of its head drew back completely, revealing the muscles and bones underneath. Yellow eyes peered at them from hollow sockets, and the members of the group knew they were taking their final breaths now. (Fear effect)

Fear took them over. This was not what they had signed up for. They were supposed to hunt a shadow wolf, not some monster coming from a madman’s fantasies. Out of the whole group, only Traubon and Geron were able to withstand the fearful presence of the creature, and Traubon still felt a weakness had overcome him.

Alyannah, Jethrow and Ta’nil ran away into the woods as fast as they could. Glitch and Ryan just stood there, frozen with horror.

Geron had seen more battles before this one though, and he felt a lot better. He looked at the fleeing hunters for a second and grunted. But it was not out of pain this time. Aly had done her best to cure the bleeding of his wound and had dressed it later with herbs. At the moment, he didn’t feel any pain at all. He felt ready for a fight. With his longsword in hand once more, he felt ready for anything.
He approached the monster steadily, sword and dagger at a ready. He wasn’t fast, but determination compensated the lack of speed. The monster WAS fast however, and darted aside just as his blades swooped down.

Traubon knew what had to be done. He levelled his halberd and charged in. His feet pounded hard on the forest floor, and he gained momentum as he approached. Still, he was used to wooden tree-stumps, and those didn’t move. The creature instinctively tried to jump aside, and barely made it before the poled axe could penetrate its hide. The Khord cut off some pieces of fur, but otherwise did no damage.

Glitch had been staring in shock, but now realized he had legs. Turning, he decided to use them and ran as fast as possible into the opposite direction. Ryan caught the Brath’s movement and realized he was standing awfully close to the battle he didn’t want to be. He also ran.

The monster now had a target to pick, and decided on Traubon, who was trying to get his halberd around to face the creature again. As the Khord wrestled with his weapon, the beast pounced on him and sank its teeth in his shoulder. The jaws sank deep and hard, and the sensation of pain was instantaneous hell. Bones splintered underneath his old armor, and Traubon screamed.

Geron was the only one left to help him, as the rest of the group had all sprinted in fear. The old adventurer wasted no time and let his longsword come down on the monster with all his might. It slashed a bloody gash into the creature’s flank, and Geron yanked it loose as the monster howled in pain. Geron heaved for air, his old bones and muscles burning with the effort of wielding his sword. He was not yet healed fully, and he was feeling the strain of battle already.

Traubon clutched his halberd with both arms. The pain was terrible, blinding almost, but if he gave up now, all was lost. So, again, he targeted the monster, and let his weapon come down. The blade struck home this time, making the monster howl in pain some more.

Taking no more chances against these men with their biting weapons, the monster fled from its nest with full speed. Geron looked after it, too weary to go after it.

(OOC: In 1 to 3 rounds, everybody loses the fear effect and can return to the nest. The monster is gone, but is not yet defeated. Traubon took a critical hit, and lost half his HP. He will need some healing. Geron is catching his breath, but not more hurt than he was before the battle.)

They had only just started going through the entrance hall of the castle, when they were disrupted by a man shouting in German. Luke immediately aligned his gun with the man’s movement as he came down the stairs. But the man proved unarmed as far as they could see, and a bit clumsy in his haste. As the man fell, Brutal moved to get a better view of the direction the man had come from.

Luke himself paced over to the man, and grabbed his arm. The captain wasn’t a very strong man, but tried to haul the middle aged German to his feet. He guessed this man was a doctor of some sorts by his dress, and might prove a valuable asset in learning the lay out of the castle.

He got the man into a chair near the resting Doc quite roughly, hoping to shake some of the fear from him. He glanced occasionally to the stairway, and kept his gun ready as he pointed his finger at the lab-rat.

“Sergeant Romo, search this man please.”

As the Sarge went at it, he started his interrogation.

“You’re one lucky canary, mister, to run into us. We can give you some protection, if you can give us some answers. First of all, what was your job here?”

(OOC: Luke wants to know a whole lot more than that, but it’s a start. He’ll ask about the layout of the castle, where the library is, where they can find either Captain Metzger or the Head Scientist, after clarifying whether or not he’s the latter himself, and what the man knows about destroying the creatures and the portal that has been created.)

Subject: The mother

The creature’s trail started off as quite obvious. Broken twigs where it had jumped through bushes, scratched moss where it had pounded its paws, upturned soil where it had first seen the rabbit and tried to pounce on it; these signs were very clear. They brought them a whole fifty yards further. Then the trail dropped dead, as Ta’nil was no experienced tracker. Aly took over and though she had claimed not to be a tracker, she could sift the details of the forest a bit finer than her Sylvari companion.

They retraced the steps of the monstrous cub as it zigzagged through the forest, seemingly at random, walking one behind the other, with Geron in the back.
The old adventurer was slowly falling behind, though he would refuse any help. He grunted an apology and fastened his pace once more.

It was late in the afternoon when they took a short break. They had lost the monster’s trail long ago, and were now trying to comb the forest as thoroughly and schematically as they could. As Geron sat down, they noted a large dark spot on the back of his shirt. Apparently the wound he had received when he was attacked by the creature, two days ago, had opened again, and was now steadily leaking blood.

(OOC: If any of you can heal him, he will be very kind and thankful. If none of you can, he’ll continue the journey regardless.)

When the sun was already lower in the sky, and the trees were casting large shadows on the forest ground, Glitch almost tripped over something that protruded from the low underbrush. It was Geron’s longsword. Sand and dry grass clung to the weapon on dried blood. But most of the blood was on the hilt, rather than on the blade.
Geron took his weapon and started cleaning it with an old rag from his backpack. He suddenly halted and peered intently beyond the bushes where they had found the sword. They followed his gaze.

Beyond the bushes lay a patch of bright green star-moss. It gleamed in the last rays of sunlight, but the sparkles were gone in a few spots. Several torn pieces of clothing lay there, and a large, smearing stain of blood was drawn northward, colouring the moss scarlet red. Somebody had died a horrible death, and his corpse had been hauled from this place wile the blood still flowed.
None of them needed any kind of tracking skills to follow this trail.

A minute later they could hear the creature. It was gnawing on something in the way a pig sounds when he’s emptying his through. It was a terrible sound in the woodland tranquillity, with bones splintering and low snarls of satisfaction.
They rounded a patch of bushes and saw the monster.

It had made a nest next to a fallen pine. It was not more than a hollow in the tree’s body of branches and needles, with old leaves and moss mixed with upturned earth as a base. The creature looked similar to the younger version they had encountered earlier that day, but it was a lot bigger. It lay there, curled into the hollow and was gnawing on a shinbone, with half the muscle of the calf hanging from the corner of its jaws. Around it lay the spoils of its victims; the items they carried which the creature hadn’t cared for.

Suddenly it stopped, and sniffed the air. Then it looked straight at the gaping group and got up with a threatening raspy growl.

(OOC: battle is up once more. State your intentions like the last battle, and we’ll see if you guys can take this one as quickly.)

Subject: getting back inside

His plan had seemed to work. The stone creatures were much less of a menace once they were forced to fly in one by one. Still, one managed to get to the Doc, and for an agonizing heartbeat Luke thought: “I wasn’t able to save them all.”
Luckily, the rest of the team retaliated quickly. His eyes widened at the item which Greta used to set the creatures on fire. He made a note to ask her about that device later.
When they finally thought themselves the victor, one of the things just popped up out of nowhere. It was greeted with an equally instant burst of bullets. Brutal once more proved to be a much needed asset of their team.

While people tended to the Doc, Luke could only keep watch, with his gun ready. His mind kept racing: It came out of nowhere! It came out of nowhere! How the hell are we supposed to fight things that just come out of nowhere!
But beyond the almost panicking mindflow came a calm tactician’s point of view. A coping mechanism perhaps. When Romo joined his side he was looking at the entrance to the castle intently.

“Your orders, sir?”

Without taking his eyes of the entrance, gun still ready, Luke answered:

“We’ll get the Doc inside. Place him in one of the chairs while we search the room for useful materials. He needs all the rest we can give him right now. God, those wounds were deep.”

Once they were inside his intentions were to look for anything that would help their quest. He also wanted to take a better look at the room’s layout before deciding which way they would go. And he definitely remembered his desire to ask the lady about that handheld flamethrower.
