Subject: evil?

hehe... I'm not more evil then somebody sending a fullgrown horse into a crowd of people .

But really, if I wanted the group to split up, or characters to be removed from the game, I would've had the guards arrest Percy and however else in my update.

this is simply a rather difficult encounter, and something that you'll have to deal with if you have CN characters in your game. Sometimes their rashness goes the good way, in this case it goes bad.

But I must say that I am pleased with what is happening, and I like all the characters in play and how they act. Like Ayrn said: good characer development and interaction is part of our fun in roleplaying. I didn't mean to scare people off, and so I'm going to add here that things may not be as bad as they seem.

In any case, I'm just curious to see how things are going to develop from here.

Draven would not be attacked, since I ruled that Geim was the first one to set foot on the soiled ground, and therefore within reach of the tree. The tree does not seem preoccupied with Geim specifically though.

Though Geim is being grappled, his arms and legs are free. The entanglement is around his chest and there only. The ointment is in a glass vial... which can be thrown... but it could also break. I do have to remind you that you are being jerked around and it would not be easy to just drop the vial where you want.

Outside Courthouse
Stout Galius Square

~Positive Tide is normal
~Negative Tide is rising

The companions were about ready to leave Stout Galius Square, when Percifeer decided that a little crowd would not stop them from their just cause. Acting on impulse, as usual, Percy conjured up a horse, and sent it flying through the gathered citizens, tourists and other curious people. They parted like water before a rock, but not as smoothly, and the mount knocked over five people, one of them an old lady that broke her wrist and shoulder as she was flung against the pavement.

The horse continued its way up to the stairway, evading the carriage and its bewildered driver who did everything he could to control his horses. Then the horse suddenly disappeared from sight, right before it was to enter the building.

Yes, the crowd had parted, but when Percy walked through the clearing, fingers were pointed at her, and people started whispering. The whispers rose to a loud murmur and then the first shout came: “It was her! She sent that thing at us.”
“Yeah,” came an answer from the other side, “She killed that boy!”

It was then that Percy, and whoever followed her, reached the other side of the carriage. They found the crowd exchanging glances, eyes darting from each other to the sorceress to the body of a young boy, which lay still on the stairs of the courthouse. A man was crouched near the kid and wept silently, as guards came running from the open doorway.

(OOC: I’ll stop here, because I have no idea how you are all going to react to this.)

Alright, the final battle for this 'chapter' has begun. If you survive this, it will be the end of this part of the adventure, and there will be lots of rewards waiting for you on the other side of this fight. Act clever, work as a team and .. well .. don't die.

Good luck, my friends!

Alloryen Kingdom
East of Hith Elee
6th day of the 8th month: Temoth Ore
11:18 am

After a quick exchange of words, it was decided that Geim would be the one to rub the potion on the tree’s bark. But none of them believed it would be an easy task to do so, and they all agreed to accompany the Khordaldrum Loremaster on his way.

Elessarae would not let Wolf go without knowing more about what was ailing him. But the warrior didn’t speak any more. He gripped his sword tighter and stepped after the rest of the party. He didn’t as much as look at her, but it didn’t feel like she was neglected. For some reason she understood that he needed to focus on what was coming. It was strange how she could grasp what this man said without conversing. There was something familiar and wild about him, like she had seen him before.

Crossing the clearing was easy enough. They eyed their surroundings carefully, expecting an ambush from any direction. But nothing happened. It seemed too easy.

They reached the border of the spoiled ground without any trouble. There was a clear difference between the natural sands, and the area around the tree that was soaked with the foul substance dripping from its leaves and branches. About a twenty feet radius around the willow, the ground was darker, damp and a reddish brown. The grass and fallen leaves covering this part of the clearing were shrivelling, decomposing faster then normal.

Geim was the first to place a careful step onto the diseased ground, testing its firmness and finding it muddy but supportive enough to continue. But the feeling of relief lasted shortly, for as soon as Geim entered the polluted soil the willows branches shot into action. Like a whip they lashed out at the Runemaster, sending red fluid flying in a shower over the companions.
Thondrek had been ready for anything though. He had prepared a spell and now released it at the trees appendices. He hit one of them with a fiery stone that should’ve scorched it as it came, but the branch seemed unaffected, even by the heat of the projectile.

The vines shot at Geim unhindered, and struck him hard, but the Khord could be thankful for the harness protecting his body. Only one of the vines managed to get a hold of the him, and instantly wrapped itself around his chest and squeezed hard. Air was pushed from his lungs and a sharp pain went through the Runemaster’s body. Geim tried to pull back, but found he could not break free from the strong hold. (You’ve lost the grapple check).

As if the sudden animation of the white willow wasn’t enough, the companions found themselves in the middle of a pandemonium of events. As soon as the tree came to life, Wolf had sunk to his knees clasping his head. The warrior screamed a low roar of pain that trembled louder than any Sylvari was capable of. It was a deep rumble of disturbance that seemed to come from the forest itself.

Aluwego, who had been silent since his recovery from the paralysis, screamed too, his voice flooded by Wolf’s agonizing cry. His gaze was pointed towards the bushes on the eastside of the clearing. Another lizard had appeared, similar to the one they had encountered earlier. In fact, it seemed a very familiar one, with traces of wounds that were closing up as it approached. It roared a silent challenge and slowly stepped onto the grass. In the corner of their eyes they could see a mirror image of the lizard approach from the west. There were two of them, and the newcomer seemed as eager for flesh as they knew the other one to be.

(OOC: So far you guys have not been affected by any form of silence yet, but the lizards are also 40 feet away. Let’s see how you deal with this situation.)

I just can't get over the fact that I never mentioned the doors to the courthouse are closed. I didn't.... because they aren't. People are walking in and out, and yes, it's busier than normal, but there's a free entry. A very big group of people has gathered outside the courthouse... on the stairway and the square... but I didn't say anything more

Oh well... , do you want to go in or not? I have Percifeer and Miran going in, Pio waiting hesitantly... who else?

well, the thing is, you guys don't know whether that would work or not. All you know is that it needs to be rubbed on. If other methods will work is a mystery. The question is: are you willing to take the risk of not rubbing?

Outside Courthouse

Llammoth bid the others to wait while she gathered what was going on that was so important that it drew a crowd so big.
An old woman with hair like spiderwebs and a skin as wrinkled as a stormy ocean seemed eager to talk, after her initial shock of talking to a half orc.

“Deary, you won’t believe what’s going on! There’s a family that discovered they have a right to a big part of the cattle in Drefast and its surrounding countryside. That’s a big deal you know. Lot’s of money involved!”

Another bystander, an old man as eager for gossip as the woman, joined in: “They found some kind of mistake in the Archives. It’s unheard of! They’s inside now, checking the paperwork, and people are awaiting the outcome. If they’s right, that means some people are not going to be happy!”

More people mingled in the conversation, and Llammoth learned that the Sebarter family was a rich family already, but that with this find, their wealth would double. It wasn’t often the Archives were wrong, so this error meant a great deal.

It's not as simple. As was already stated by somebody I think, the potion needs to be rubbed on the tree, not just poured on.

The tree is about 75 feet away from where you are standing, on the other side of a clearing. The trees surrounding it look sick and twisted, and the ground looks soggy/muddy, but not swampy. The ground is saturated with fluid, but HOW soggy it is exactly you cannot tell from here.

With an agreement to return to the docks later they continued their journey towards the courthouse. A little while later they arrived at Stout Galius Square, named after the former Emperor, where the courthouse was situated.

The building itself was a stone marvel, with exterior columns, high windows, balustrades and a long stairway which was now completely covered with people. A carriage with two black horses stood waiting at the bottom of the stairs, but the driver looked like he had been there some time. Commoners and tourists alike stood waiting and chatting vividly.

Something was going on that drew a bigger crowd than usual.

Wolf turned to Elessarae and only nodded, as if he responded to something else besides her question. Though the answer seemed unfitting, it drew a sense of appreciation and gratitude with it that struck deep in the heart of the bladesinger. It seemed sufficient and special, though Elessar had no idea why she would care so much for what this man thought of her.

His blue eyes seemed pale and distant, and when he spoke it was with a raspy voice, betraying the immensity of the suffering he was trying to hide.

"You are good people."

More would not come from his lips as he stared at the tree, and waited for the others to join them.

Alloryen Kingdom
East of Hith Elee
6th day of the 8th month: Temoth Ore
11:05 am

Loda now reached the reptile, and her axe was eager to taste the blood of this unnatural creature. She hit it square in the chest, under the muscled neck, and her face was instantly showered with blood as the scaled skin burst open. The lizard shrieked, but its agony was lost in the silence.
Gothard too dove in again, but the lizard lashed about so wildly that the wolf couldn’t get his jaws around any parts of it.

Quilanday was still staggering backwards until she rested against a tree. There she fumbled for her crossbow, but she couldn’t get it with one arm. Her shoulder was injured so badly that it hung limp on her side.

Geimiedefher had noticed that his spells would not work here, but that wouldn’t stop the Runemaster. He pushed past Loda and aimed for the same area, hoping for a final blow. The creature’s hide proved tougher than appearances could betray, for Geim’s axe bounced off the scales harmlessly.

Thondrek shrugged off the unusual shock of sudden battle. It was unlike him to hesitate. With a rush, perhaps heightened by shame, he darted forward and jabbed his guisarme into the monster’s flank. Its tip went into the creature’s flesh deeply. The lizard stumbled sideways from pain and bloodloss.

Elessarae called out to all the good gods mentally, but they would not answer. Was it that they could not hear her, or was this another test? It was frustrating to find she couldn’t keep true to her vow. Sylvaria needed her!

Who was frustrated as well was Draven. He wanted so badly to join in the bloodletting, but instead of giving in to rage, the warrior tried to find an inner peace, and felt his muscles relax. Very soon he would be able to move again.

Wolf regained his composure after the wild swing with his sword. Again he raised the blade, and this time aimed better. When it came down, it was with precision, but the creature moved about too frantically to give it a good hit.

The monstrous lizard was crazed now, enraged by pain and frustration. It lashed out with its talons to the closest enemies, which were Loda and Geim. It raked both Khords straight across the chest in a wild jump. Its talons dug deep and it pushed off against the two stout heroes. Then the lizard ran straight into the bushes and put a big distance between itself and its enemies.

In the mean time, Alyssia had been moving backwards, testing the limits of the silence that hung as a cloud over the battle. She almost scared herself when she stepped on a twig that snapped sharply and clear. Quickly she cast her spell and released three bolts of energy from her fingers.

Malius also kept a close eye on the creature as it sprinted away. He let his arrow fly and sent it into the bushes.
It was never clear what finally killed the creature, Alyssia’s magic missiles or Malius’ arrow, but the heavy waving of bushes was suddenly calmed. The companions discovered that sound slowly returned to their area, but found themselves with a new problem; Draven and Elessarae were still paralyzed. The dark warrior slowly came to life again shortly after the monster was killed, but Elessarae took an agonizing minute before recovering from the stony hold.

A little later they were back on their way, following Wolf and his unknown guidelines. As the sun was crawling higher into the sky, the sylvari warrior slowed down gradually. He would not reply to any questions to why he was slowing down, but seemed determined to find their destination.

And then they found it, on the edge of an open place in the forest: a willow with long branches reaching to the ground. It was white as snow, but there were deep red lines running over it vertically, like veins too close to the surface. A red puss oozed from the branches and dripped onto the ground and into the soil. It was an abomination of a tree, a diseased centre of destruction, for its neighbouring trees were already limp and black, drained of life.

Goddfrey’s Bakery
East Hillside Path
6 days left

~Positive Tide is normal
~Negative Tide is rising

The companions had to continue their quest; as good as it was to see Goddfrey and his fine business. They decided the Courthouse was next on their list, and grabbed a bread each.
When they opened up the door to the store part of the bakery, they noted Goddfrey talking to a man with a powdered face. The man was wearing a white curly wig and was clothed in blue velvet and gold.

“So we’re clear then? You deliver the pastries to the Courthouse on Thirkday at eight. Councillor Quortez will be very generous if his guests are pleased.”

The man gave them a disgusted look as the group passed by, but Goddfrey waved and smiled.

And then they were back on the streets. The fastest way to the Courthouse was to go back to Rogue-valley Square, and head towards the first Thunder River Bridge. It was an average day, and the streets were busy with merchants, travellers, guards and the occasional herald that shouted the news from little stages:

~Extra book market tomorrow at the Jusarin Cathedral. Funds to go to a new lead-painted window.~

~Two drunk men found dead in southern harbours. The word ‘vampire’ is whispered.~

~Sebarter Family claims ownership of large part of Drefast cattle stock. Archives will be checked.~

~Former captain of the guard Leroy Stocking returns with his band. Will be playing in The Crooked Whisk at midnight.~

They travelled fast, and reached the first Thunder River Bridge after half an hour. At that point they were half way to the Courthouse. The two bridges that crossed the wild waters were two wonders of architecture, and the pride of Drefast. From the balustrades they had a marvellous view of the docks, where ships were unloading and the smell of fish was strong. It was Pio that noted something that made him look again. There, on the west shore, north of the bridge and close to the water was a sign. A sign with an arrow, and letters that read: ‘Freemen’s Way’.

You can see the results of that in the common room: Rdinn Youtube thread, somewhere low. I'm making a new one as we speak (read/type), because I think we should do better.

Keep up the good work, Swan!
