Subject: Finally watched episode 7 ...

..... after buying the First Season (from reading some of the earlier comments here) and getting caught up (since I have not read any of the Graphic Novels.

Zombie flicks are not my forte per se, but I do enjoy a good storyline and well written characterization.

That is what this series has going for it in my humble opinion. I really enjoy the character driven storyline.

[As a side note after my laptop was attacked last Saturday with Trojan Viruses and I just got it back on Thursday with new drivers etc and a different Virus Protection, this evening I clicked on one of the Walking Dead links and the Anti Virus Alarm was activated and the site Blocked because it was infected with Viruses!]

Anyway, I did watch the midseason finale on www.bluehost.com (which did not set off a Virus Alarm) and it does have all the episodes available from both seasons.

EDIT: the bluehost.com is Not the one I was at as it is showing my Web Hosting Provider is Bluehost.com [now it is not showing so maybe it was the link afterall] (the link I use is one where you only have 72 minutes to view the episode ... so a couple times I have had to go back and view an episode again to see the outcome because it had "timed out" after watching one episode and then another ... and I did not download the episode ... only played the episode).

I do not dislike Herschel because from his entire episode to episode characterization he was trying to do what is right from his understanding of the Bible.

He was a man of Faith whose Hope was slowly eroded away and he held to a slim chance that a cure for the 'Walkers' would be found and his second wife and stepchild and other friends would be restored ... and thus his previous way of life on the farm with family and friends.

The loss of his first wife (the mother of Maggie) was possibly too much to bear for the thought of losing his second wife ... which may be why he kept his hope alive by keeping the 'Walkers' in the barn and feeding them.

His heart to heart talk with Maggie and her telling him that a 'Walker' almost killed her (saved by Glenn an Asian ... and probably a Deep South attitude bordering on the KKK who Herschel may or may not have been a part of or at least sympathized with earlier in life ... mere speculation on my part here ... added to the irony and prepared us for the grim ending of the episode!)

We saw his Humanitarian side as they reached out to save the 'Walkers' from the bog and the terms that Rick would have to agree to for the group to stay on the farm.

The confrontation between Shane and Dale and that outcome setting the stage for the climax of this episode was a Great Piece of Characterization and Writing for the Storyline ... not to mention that when the chips were down it was Rick that had to pull the trigger on the girl ... and his responsibility for her becoming what she became will probably weigh heavily upon him in future episodes ... again more speculation on my part here!

I have read in posts elsewhere that many people are disappointed there are not enough zombies in each episode ... but it is the Character Driven Plot that has kept me following this series online and buying the dvd of the First Season!

It will be interesting to see how shattered Herschel becomes from this incident (mayhap a delerious old man in a rocking chair ... with his mind snapped ... who knows?)

I would like to see Maggie go off with the group ... as they probably will have to do now ... but she may have to stay behind and nurse her father now ... who saw his last shreds of hope for the restoration of family and friends Shattered in a few moments of time!

Looking forward to further episodes!

..... there are some kind of Patrols from Lasch along the Forest of Frie borders.

Not quite sure how you would get a message sent there since you are hired to guard the Caravan (?) ... and Fredrico may not take it too kindly if you suggested that you are willing to ride ahead to get help.

..... the previous page!

T_O brings up some valid points:

... thus would lead to a few other thoughts...

such as my movement being only 20ft/round( so slow...) however, unamoured it's doubled (yay monk abilities), which means I wouldn't slow the movement of the caravan...

The caravan will be moving forward at a walking pace and I am also ruling that since each character is a level 5 that somewhere in your back history each of you has dealt with night marches (ie sleepless nights) during some type of battle or forced march/travel.

I would think that Sir Cal would be leading Orion to give his horse a bit of a rest, but that is up to Sir Cal and Orion to work out on their own!

however it may be too early on to be that trusting... especially of an elf (sorry, can't rightly help that)... and, what with poison arrows behind us, without the protection of my armour....

This is a Great Plot Hook to force the Dwarf and Elf to overcome their uneasiness or basic racial mistrust of one another!

Again, each of you is level 5 and quite possibly have dealt with other races ... at least Toraad probably would have and has to get to know Danamar to gain some trust for his own peace of mind for future encounters!

You may want to keep wearing that armor until you get to Lasch ... just because you are a guard and Fredrico would expect his guards to remain properly armed and attired for the completion of the journey!

Subject: Another Consideration ...

..... is that Halfliings have Dusk Vision and that Fredrico would be confident that this ability of Drog and Seg Kargar are sufficient for any warnings of suspicious activity to the sides or behind the 3rd wagon they are driving, since it will be a much slower pace.

Actually, the truth of the matter is that Fredrico knows that this particular pair of Halflings have an uncanny ability to see in the dark up to 60 feet (Dark Vision) which is why he has them driving the last wagon.

Fredrico may or may not disclose this information, but Drog and Seg Kargar would be able to 'see' any Kobald archers once they were in range to unleash any arrows!

They have proven this ability a number of times during the journey to Sherrill and Fredrico may not be sharing this info merely because he has become so accustomed to this fact that it does not even cross his mind to explain his reasoning for not being too concerned about the safety of the last wagon should the guards be on foot.

So Another Consideration is if you 3 decide to keep pressing on towards Lasch, what possible order would be leading the wagons?

Fredrico will want his remaining guards to do just that, serve as guards even on foot and would rather the Dwarf and Elf be leading the procession with their sight abilities, comfortable that Drog and Seg Kargar have the rear under proper surveillance ... and quite possibly would want Sir Cal to ride alongside his wagon and Rextugenous to walk alongside the wagon driven by Lars.

This way there would be a line of communication established from front to back (Cal and Rex being on the left side of the wagon and able to converse with Fredrico and Lars respectively).

Subject: A Consideration ...

..... about pressing on is that Fredrico will probably ask the guards to proceed on foot for 2 reasons:

1. To lighten the load for the horses pulling each of the wagons.

2. The aforementioned Deep Vision and Twilight Vision abilities of the Dwarf and Elf.

I am ruling that since Danamar can see up to 2 miles in the daylight, that the Ranger/Druid has scouted the plains in all directions of the compass and determined that there are no visible threats in front, behind or to the sides of the wagon presently.

It would also make sense to me that it would be in character for the Druid/Ranger Elf to prefer getting closer to the comforts of the trees at the mention of the Forest of Frie.

Subject: Rextugenous only lost ...

..... one (1) Hit Point from the Shock Burst.

He is fine with moving on as the blast only left him an irritating pain in his chest where the full brunt of the blast hit him. (He could lay hands on himself to restore that Hit Point, but he may choose to wait longer depending upon what is decided about moving on?)

I mainly would prefer the decision to move on or to make camp a decision for the 3 of you to decide here (do not want my choice clouded by what I do or do not know what will happen with either choice).

However, I will say that Toraad (T_O) makes a great case for moving on, even at a slow pace.

Toraad does have Deep Vision which allows him to see up to 120 feet no matter how dark the night gets. Colors erode and he sees objects in many shades of gray.

Danamar has Twilight Vision which enables the elf to see up to a mile distance outside distinguishing color and detail.

Since Cal is a Half Elf with Human lineage he has no ability to see in the dark and is in the same boat as Rextugenous regarding Human night sight limitations.

Kobald Confusion
1:15pm on Tuesday
March 13, 212awd (After Winter Dark)

Kobalds seemed to be pouring out of the ground from every direction to the north of the wagons as Rextugenous unleashed a Lightning Bolt spell in the name of his deity Brigit.

Before the vermin could get into attacking range with their short bows and poisoned arrows, Rextugenous had made a desperate wave with his wand 'Wanda' to prevent the Kobalds from attacking and pursuing from behind.

Clinging on for dear life as the wagon bounced along the trail, the Paladin/Wizard/Bard aimed his wand as best as he could and let the bolt unleash with a prayer to Brigit on his lips.

A lightning bolt of bright crimson and yellow crackled through the air, striking the attacking Kobalds along a five foot path wide and hundred feet long, killing an unknown number of Kobalds in its wake as the wagon raced on with the Halflings Drog and Seg Kargar urging the horses onward.

Time seemed to stand still as the Dwarf Cleric Toraad uttered a prayer to his Dwarven God of War Steel, as he unleashed a Rock To Sand spell by grasping and pointing his Holy Symbol, as Fredrico urged the lead horses onward as fast as they could gallup!

A blast of undefinable energy ripped towards an outcropping of rock, a bit beyond the holes where the Kobalds were emerging as if they were one organism of rabid terror. The rock shattered into sand instantly as the vein of rock under the surface dissolved, causing the surface ground to collapse with dozens of terrified Kobalds vanishing beneath the surface of the sand cave-in.

Sir Calmindon mere moments before had spurred his horse Orion forward between the second and third wagons, as the Elf Danamar desperately held onto the wagon driven by Lars for dear life as he tried to focus his Holy Symbol to cast an Entangle spell.

The wagon was bouncing so badly along the rough trail that Danamar was unable to aim where he wanted the spell to go, but he was successful in entangling an undetermined number of Kobalds in a 50 foot radius to his far right as the wagon raced forward.

As the wagon raced past the Kobalds entangled in the rapidly growing vegetation, Danamar had a momentary glimpse of the ground at the far side of the Entangle spell begin to dissolve from view ... plus Calmindon spurring his steed Orion forward towards a small group of Kobalds between his spell and the wagons.

He did not see what happened next as he had to concentrate upon keeping his balance on the wagon seat as Lars urged the horses to maintain their pace with the lead wagon driven like a madman by his brother Fredrico.

Sir Calmindon pointed his lance and breathed a prayer to his deity as a rainbow of colors emanated from the end of his lance towards a small group of bewildered Kobalds. The Color Spray cone struck the foremost 5 Kobalds with blindness ... they staggered around for a few moments as their comrades fled for their lives ... then disappeared beneath the crumbling earth beneath their feet ... as Orion reared up on his hind hooves with a warning whinny snort.

Calmindon had been intent upon charging forward with his sword to cut a swathe into the swarming attackers, but he sheathed his sword and let Orion respond to the imminent danger confronting both horse and rider.

Kobalds were fleeing in various directions northward, having lost their taste for blood ... a surprising result of the unexpected onslaught from the wagon caravan that the vermin had mistakenly judged to be helpless prey by their superior numbers.

Now the Kobalds were disappearing beneath the surface as the ground gave way to the repercussions of the spell that Toraad had unleashed in the name of his Dwarven War God Steel.

Sir Calmindon managed to guide his steed between the second and third wagons, urging Orion to close the gap on the lead wagon as the caravan left a wake of unexpected carnage behind them.

The wagons drew ever nearer to the hills that both Toraad and Danamar had viewed as suspicious possibilities for a surprise attack, but their previous thoughts of an attack from those hills seemed to be unwarranted as their wagons sped between the hills unmolested and unhindered.

Rextugenous was bracing himself on the back of the wagon, watching the Kobalds disappear beneath the crumbling surface ... thanking his goddess Brigit that the Kobalds had been unable to get into range to launch any more poisoned arrows ... as one lone sentry had been able to do before the 4 Avengers had sprung into action with their collective spells.

As the wagon was skillfully guided between the hills by Drog and Seg Kargar, their horses keeping pace with the other two wagons, a pair of sinister red eyes watched the progress of the caravan as they passed close by his place of seclusion.

Fuming from the carnage left in the wake of the fleeing caravan, the lone figure waited until the final wagon had passed his place of concealment, before running to a nearby rise to shout an epithet at the guard standing at the back of the rear wagon:

"Me Sligrat ... Me Make You Pay!"

Then with a swift motion the Kobald Shaman unleashed a Sound Burst spell that struck Rextugenous in the chest, almost as quickly as the Thunderclap echoed throughout the surrounding hillside.

Although not stunned by the sudden attack, Rextugenous fell backward inside the Treasure Wagon as the Kobald Shaman named Sligrat made his escape, undetected by any of the others guarding the wagon caravan, as the drivers sought to control their horses that had reacted to the sudden sound.

Two or three miles further along the trail the hills gave way to more flat plains. Fredrico and Lars pulled hard on the reins of their horses ... with Drog and Seg Kargar following suit ... as they inspected the tell tale signs of Goblin Raiders mixed with horse tracks.

Fredrico ordered the young maidens to distribute some fruit and nuts to everyone as they inspected the tracks. Danamar confirmed that the Goblin Raiders had indeed left the trail to Lasch and herded the horses across the plains to the south southwest.

Rextugenous dismissed his chest injury as a minor inconvenience as he rubbed the sore spot thoughtfully, listening to Fredrico and Lars as they decided to move the wagon caravan along at a much slower pace.

Since the Goblin Raiders were no longer directly in front of them, the brothers insisted (without any argument from anyone) that the horses deserved a few apples and a leisurely walk as a reward for outdistancing the attacking Kobalds.

Therefore the party resumed their journey at a slow crawl without any signs of trouble until the sun began its slow descent to the horizon line before the long fingers of dusk began claiming the land.

Fredrico called another halt to the procession and after a whispered debate with his brother Lars, he turned his attention to the 4 guards and posed the following question:

"We be about 20 miles away from the city of Lasch ... which means maybe 10 miles or less from the Forest of Frie ... So what say ye my stout hearted guards ... Do we make camp here ... or do we press on towards Lasch for a few miles more?"

Okay Gang. Decision Time! Talk it over in the QnA and then make your Posts in the Game Thread based upon what has transpired this day with the Kobalds, the Goblin Raiders trail information and the question just posed to you by Fredrico your employer!

Brokkrok has one (1) Ever Burning Torch that either he can carry or he would be willing to pass to his Khord brother which would free him to carry his Longsword and possibly a Flask of Holy Water and be able to Turn UnDead if necessary?

By my post he was the last one to go down the stairs, but that does not necessarily mean that he remains the last in line.

Checking the left door makes sense.

Opening all 3 is a bit of a gamble, but I do not think it would be wise to leave the church to get other supplies.

Just let Almerin roll the dice and set the order and enter to the left (or wherever we decide to go!)
