Subject: Cracking the Whip

Rex was not too surprised by this sudden turn of events. He had lived the life of a mercenary long enough to experience the joys and sorrows of receiving his payments ... and of sometimes being denied his payments due to unforeseen circumstances.

However, this was an intriguing new chapter in the ways of how promised payments for his services would find a way to stall, delay or disappear altogether.

At least Shaben had boarded the ship willingly and Rex the Reckless chose to respect that decision, even if it meant the promised gold would never be seen as a result.

What bolstered the Mercenary's confidence was the experience of how things always seemed to work themselves out over a period of time. Payments denied or delayed always seemed to give way to circumstances and opportunities that multiplied the lost gold back to Rex the Reckless over the long term.

No matter how bizzare this situation, the Mercenary was confident that the outcome of receiving even more gold for his services elsewhere was the inevitable conclusion to this day's unforeseen events.

His contemplative reverie was broken by the solemn words of Septimus who was obviously subdued and broken by this event:

“Our leader Shaben is no longer able to guide us and although it is a disadvantage, we can not allow it to cripple us. There is a much greater occurrence that prohibits petty feelings of guilt, and it our duty to warn the Council of it.

“The war in Lantan will soon spread throughout its provinces. We have all suffered losses, and cannot allow others to do the same.

“We, my friends, are about to undertake something that no one will ever thank us for. If I have lived as a dog, I would die as a man."

Rex noted that Septimus had deliberately conveyed his sentence to the Mercenary and nodded his agreement, choosing to remain aloof from the broken warrior and the seething lady who had taken her silent grief to the crows nest with the obvious indication she wished to be undisturbed as she dealt with her emotions alone and away.

Rex withdrew his Whip and fondled the handle thoughtfully as he looked out to the open sea and back again as Septimus approached the ship's captain and exchanged his sullen sorrow to that of a man of action:

“We seek the Council, I believe. Judging by our situation, we have no other course of action."

Rex played out the full length of the coil of his Whip and with a masterful flick of his wrist cracked the Whip with a series of repetitive motions as his way of adding the needed emphasis that prudent haste was the wisest course of action for the captain to take in response to Septimus' declaration to the ship's captain.

Rex continues to crack the Whip in no particular rhythm as he paces about the deck seemingly lost in thought as he begins to formulate a plan of action for himself based upon his past experiences; always mindful of the fact that somewhere down the road he will seek to locate the whereabouts of Shaben, if for no other reason than to establish closure before the Mercenary takes his final nap!

Subject: Well now ...

..... after re-reading your post you asked a question about where to start and introduced yourself, then you grabbed a rag and started in on the dishes and at the end of your post you directed a question specifically to "the non-dwarf" so that would probably explain why BrewStirr Hammer has not responded directly to you!

That an because I was quite tired last night after walking home in the desert heat and had another story to post for another PBM game that had to be Emailed last night, but I did make sure that I posted at Under The Sea before writing the other story!

Sunday is my day off and depending upon the other posts my dwarf will probably get around to saying something to you guys!

BrewStirr Hammer certainly was not one that was unaccustomed to hard work and seemingly impossible tasks.

His fiery red eyes surveyed the countless piles of algae infested bowls and dishes as he rolled up his sleeves and began scrubbing the eating ware as best as he could with the meager supplies available.

The Dwarf chose to lead by example when it came to doing the dirty work of cleaning the uncleanable and he did so without grumbling or griping or complaining.

Instead, he kept both his eyes and ears open to evaluate the abilities and motivations of his three companions in regards to the mundane tasks at hand, knowing full well that should he find himself teamed with these adventurers at some point in the future [while facing unknown dangers and hostile attackers] that the way they handled themselves while tackling the dishes revealed what type of character and ability they would offer during a situation where one's life may depend upon how his teammates handled adversity no matter what form it may take.

BrewStirr Hammer kept to himself as best he could under the circumstances and all that anyone really knew about the Dwarf was that he seemed to be some kind of lackey that had been chosen by the Hammer Clan to investigate the reports of the Elven Treasures and had been charged with the responsibility of determining the possibility to negotiate certain trade rights with the Elves [were the rumors to prove to be true].

The Dwarf had taken extreme precautions to prevent anyone from realizing his true prowess, although he was sorely tempted more than once to utilize his special abilities to change the condition of the bowls and dishes that seemed to be almost magically disposed to resist a good cleaning.

One thing that BrewStirr Hammer had concluded from observing the various adventurers on board ship these many days at sea ... was that he could do much worse for having any kind of reliable teammates ... were he to find himself travelling anywhere with these three oddly assorted adventurers who found themselves scrubbing the unscrubbable.

Panon Panaw was relieved that Ash had found another lady to speak with and share a room. He was more accustomed to working alone and had felt a bit of a strain and pressure to entertain his lady guest as she got acclimated to her surroundings at Needlemire's.

The time flow had ebbed and change was in the air as the Flame Finger introduced himself and invited Panon Panaw to share a room.

Panon really had no choice in the matter and the Flame Finger was not only an interesting person, but the convergence of time made it evident that this one would soon prove to be a valuable friend and ally before the journey to deliver the oppressed had been fulfilled.

The Flame Finger was as talkative as Panon was quiet and as the Flame Finger studied his spell book, the Mercenary Cleric readied himself for a good night's sleep.

He was courteous in listening to the talkative one, but when pressed for an answer to the disappearance of the beggars, Panon Panaw merely replied:

"Time Will Tell ... my friend ... Time Will Tell ..."

Rex admired the lady as she confronted the Elven woman. She had spunk and the Mercenary always found spunk attractive.

Attracting pistol shots, attracting arrows, attracting crossbow bolts, attracting swords or attracting spell casting just to name a few.

This was a time to continue observation, a time to study what appeared to be an enemy and a time to refrain from making the wrong move and ending the journey before it had begun.

"Hush now family," whispered the Mercenary as his weapons silently cried out to draw blood, "there will be plenty of time for that before I take my last nap."

Subject: A Family Outing

Rex the Reckless awoke from his rum-induced slumber and decided that it was time for the family to get out from the cabin and get some fresh sea air.

He gathered them together to himself one by one as he donned his studded leather armor and spiked light shield.

Every family member had their place as the Mercenary secreted his Dagger and Pistol, donned his Spiked Gauntlet, holstered his Throwing Axe, and with a precision born of many hours of practice, Rex the Reckless outfitted himself with his Battle Axe, Spiked Chain, Great Club and Whip for a period of exercise on the deck of the ship where Septimus would be able to take note of the weaponry and perhaps curtail his attitude of superiority towards the Mercenary.

Rex also had his trusty Repeating Heavy Cross Bow slung across his back with his 3 remaining quivers of bolts. He knew the ship would be landing somewhere soon and the Mercenary needed to get himself back into a semblance of fighting shape, or at least be able to carry all his weapons as was his custom when needful.

As Rex began his journey topside, suddenly the ship lurched to a sudden stop, causing the Mercenary to momentarily lose his balance before he recovered and raced for the stairs.

In mere moments Rex the Reckless and his family were witness to the strange ship and mysterious Elf that was in the process of taking his employer Shaben to parts unknown.

Rex cautiously but boldly and determinedly made his way to the upper deck where he could view the proceedings from the partial shelter of the catapult.

Once in position, his ears burned as the Elf gave her warning and Shaben seemed to voluntarily board the mysterious vessel under the power of his own volition.

Rex had learned long ago that even a Mercenary must know when to refrain from drawing a weapon or sword and when to silently observe to weigh all options before deciding upon a course of action.
