The Halfling Monks had succeeded in neutralizing the first row of Giant Ants, but their surviving opponents were now collectively enraged and proceeded to retaliate!

Fortunately for Monk #1 Ants 1 row 2, 2 row 2, 1 row 3, 2 row 3 and 3 row 3 were a bit slower than he was as he contorted his body and evaded their bites!

Monk #2 was not so fortunate as Ant 1 row 4 nipped his left ankle while Ant 2 row 4 managed to do some massive damage as he lost his balance and his foe tore a jagged gash in his left arm and shoulder!

Regaining his poise he was able to elude Ant 2 row 4 and block out the pain in the process!

Monk #3 eluded Ants 1 and 2 from row 5 and Monk #4 was totally ignored by any of his opponents!

Monk #5 also eluded Ants 3 and 5 from row 5, but Ant 4 row 5 bit his left forearm, dealing maximum damage!

Monk #6 suffered a minimum damage bite, but Ant 4 row 4 managed to rip a small tear in his right forearm as he dodged Ant 5 row 4 to set himself to counter attack his foes!

Ants 4 and 5 from row 3 were unable to bite Monk #7, but Monk #8 evaded Ant 4 row 3, only to suffer a rip in his left thigh from Ant 3 row 2 as Ant 5 row 2 bit his right arm with two thirds potential damage dealing!

Grabbing their Clubs and Hand Axes, the Halfling Monks set themselves to even the odds a bit better!

Monk #1 retaliated against Ant 1 row 3 and the combination of both weapons striking its head caused his foe to fall Unconscious to the Dark Arena sands!

The combination of blows by Monk #2 against Ant 1 row 4 caused his foe to wobble, but still had enough life remaining to remain standing in front of him defiantly!

Monk #3 had the same result against Ant 1 row 5, although his foe nearly lost consciousness!

Monk #4 did not do quite as well against Ant 3 row 5, but his foe staggered under the force of the blows!

Monk #5 did as well as his brother Monk #2 against Ant 4 row 5 as his fall wobbled, but stubbornly refused to fall to the Dark Arena sands!

Monk #6 succeeded in knocking Ant 5 row 4 Unconscious with Grievous Wounds with a deadly combination of Club and Hand Axe!

Ant 5 row 3 fell to the Dark Arena sands Unconscious with Grievous Wounds under the deadly combination of Club and Hand Axe to its front appendages! Monk #7 glared at his foe as it lay there twitching uncontrollably!

Monk #8 eliminated Ant 5 row 2 as both his Club and Hand Axe connected simultaneously on the head of his foe! The Unconscious Giant Ant would be dead in three rounds with Mortal Wounds!

There are 12 Giant Ants that have not suffered any damage whatsoever! Three others are twitching with new life! Four more are close to being rendered Unconscious!

Mushroom Forest
Warrens of Gunthras
Among the Mushrooms

Loco made his way around the mushrooms with a cautious nonchalance, looking for clues and studying his companions through the wisps of the mists that clouded his mind with the wavering colors of the mushrooms he had eaten that day!

There were times when the Cleric perceived things both real and imagined ... in a colorful kaleidoscopic sort of way ... experiencing sensations and imaginations ... that made the burden of his past heartbreaks ... and torments ... somewhat more bearable!

Distortions of the serious ... the bending ... and stretching ... of the comical ... assuaged his mind ... his emotions ... into a somewhat more bearable conception ... as Loco made his way through the sensations of society!

He was not so sure as to what had made him notice ... the Bat hanging from the hair of Ole ... but it provided him a focus ... between dreams ... and realities ... a point of reference ... for amusement ... bemusement ... and the chance to make a new friend ... for Loco knew the importance in the midst of conflicts ... battles ... or mystery ... of having trusted friends ... especially powerful ... and specialized ... friends!

Pointing nonchalantly to the Bat, Loco merely queried, "Does It Eat ... Much ... Mushrooms?"

Then the Cleric wandered away once again seemingly aimlessly ... crossing and re-crossing a colorful path of his own detecting design ... searching for clues as he made his way towards the elusive Crulgrin Shadebeard ... for a bit of colorful conversation ... for the Cleric had learned long ago ... the importance of having trusted friends ... in battle ... and while unravelling mushrooming mysteries!

Subject: Debriefing Dusk

"You spoke with the woman, Xira, as if you knew her," said Dusk when he and the dwarf were a little apart from the group and far from Xira. "What do you know of her?"

"I had the honor of battling Xira during the Elite Tournament at the Fonhinqann Gladiator Arena!"

"She nearly killed me with that Death Scythe!"

"Destroyed my original Flaming Scimitar!"

"I was allowed a limited use of my Spells!"

"Rules forbade me to summon a Familiar or Allies!"

"I sent a Bolt of Lightning against her and she avoided it with ease!"

"Then I tried a Flame Strike and she twisted away from it as easy as you please!"

"The crowd was hollering 'Black Scythe! Black Scythe' ... but Xira closed upon me with her Silver Scythe and shattered my Flaming Scimitar!"

"I thought I was a Goner! For a moment I just hung my head waiting for her to slay me! But with an unexpected flash of desperation I somehow unleashed a Heat Metal Spell to buy myself some time!"

"Then she touched me with her bandaged hand and the most sickening feeling began to overwhelm me ... followed by the slashing of her Silver Scythe that somehow imparted a blackness that tried to claim my soul ... but I desperately clung to consciousness and tried to impart a Cure Critical Wounds Spell to surprise Xira with an act of kindness!"

"But she stopped me from casting the Spell and I can still hear the venom of her disdainful words echoing in the canyons of my mind from time to time!"

"Fortunately the Heat Metal Spell caused her to drop the Silver Scythe ... but when she pulled out the Black Scythe ... it was so horrible!"

"Desperately I unleashed a Dispel Magic Spell against that horrific sight as her weapon threatened my very life ... but I do not quite remember what exactly happened ... all I know is that the Dispel Magic Spell failed ... and Xira was glowing White Hot from my Heat Metal Spell ... as that Black Scythe cut deep into my soul ... "

"... and somehow I clung to a very thin thread of my life force ... and Xira somehow fell to the sands ... and we were both spared to live to this day!"

"She nearly killed me with both her Scythe weapons!"

"Fortunately my combination of Spells were able to overcome her arrogance!"

"Thought she was going to die, but the healers were able to keep her from dying!"

"My reward was the bag of gold that I shared with you friend Dusk ... plus Xira gave me the choice of taking the Death Scythe ... or learning the tale of the weapon!"

"At the time ... it seemed best to take the weapon ... for all the good it did me!"

"I thought that taking the weapon would break its bond from Xira ... for she has held it for 13 years!"

"She also told me that the original owner looks just like her ... but that owner has probably made another Death Scythe!"

"The damage to Xira's mind ... and to her hands ... I though I might be able to spare her more pain ... and when she first arrived here ... I thought at first she was that original owner ... but there is no mistaking the cold venom of disdain that spits from the words of her mouth when she chooses to speak to anyone!"

"Now with this Linsemptus problem ... it seemed like the inevitable destiny ... and the bond of weapon and warrior ... was best suited for Xira to wield the Death Scythe against our enemies ... and pray she never turns that Dark Blade against any of us!"

With that lengthy explanation out of the way, it seemed as though a great weight had lifted from Manalagna Hammer, plus it made the uncomfortable ride somewhat more bearable for the Druid Dwarf as the time of telling his tale had made the ride seem to pass more quickly!

Manalagna just stared blankly at Dusk, realizing the enormity of the burden, plus the freshly deepened wounds of the Death Scythe had robbed the Druid of precious abilities!

He focused on the ride ahead and drew upon the restorative power that had been granted him and the others, but it was not enough to renew his former abilities!

Manalagna Hammer is robbed of precious abilities as he remains at 11 Strength and Dexterity; recovers his Constitution and Wisdom to 17 and 18 each; but at the expense of only recovering his Intelligence and Charisma to 9 respectively!

The West End Gnome Clerics stood their ground as the Giant Worker Ants methodically resumed their plan of attack without deviation!

Ants 1 and 2 from row 2 were unable to bite Cleric #1 as he jumped away from them and Ant 1 from row 3 also missed as the Cleric jumped to his right, but Ant 2 from row 3 timed its attack in a harmonious rhythm attuned to the anticipated movement of the Cleric with a successful near perfect damage dealing bite that sunk into his right leg!

Cleric #2 was unable to elude Ants 1 and 2 from row 4 as they both inflicted near perfect damage dealing bites on both of his legs!

Ant 1 from row 5 mysteriously stopped in its tracks as the Cleric stared at this foe as he tried to hobble to a safer location! For some unknown reason the Ant just stood still as if in a trance! [This Ant will not be able to attack until Combat Round 6 as a result of a Fumble!]

But while the Cleric smiled at his unexpected good fortune, Ant 3 from row 4 took full advantage as it attacked from the Right Side and sunk its mandibles with the full force of its damage dealing ability into the Cleric’s right arm!

Cleric #3 was bitten on his left shin by Ant 2 from row 5 with a third of its damage dealing ability, but was able to elude Ant 3 from row 5 as he jumped out of harms way!

The remaining Giant Ants continued to ignore Clerics #4, #5 and #6 as they pressed their attacks against Clerics #7 and #8, who both avoided their foes with apparent ease!

Armed with a Club, Cleric #1 ignored the pain in his leg as he instinctively swung with two-thirds damage dealing force as his weapon slammed into Ant 1 from row 3, weakening his advancing foe!

Cleric #2 was only able to inflict the minimum damage dealing ability against Ant 2 from row 4 as his Club bounced off an appendage with a painful glancing blow!

Ant 3 from row 5 suffered only a third of the damage dealing ability from Cleric #3 as he swung his Club into the Giant Ant’s face!

In an effort to assist his Copper Cavern brother, Cleric #4 chose to swing his Club unhindered against the left side of Ant 3 from row 5 with surprisingly maximum damage dealing ability!

This Ant wobbled under the force of the blow! But managed to remain conscious!

Choosing to fire another Arrow against Ant 5 from row 1, Cleric #5 benefitted from not being attacked as his Arrow nearly scored maximum damage dealing ability!

This Ant was the first to become Unconscious with Grievous Wounds from a Cleric!

But almost immediately it began twitching as new life was somehow seeking to revive its inert body!

Armed with their Clubs, Clerics #6 and #7 simultaneously struck the top of the heads of Ant 4 row 5 and Ant 4 row 4 with maximum damage dealing force!

Swinging his Club at Ant 3 from row 3 that stood directly in front of Cleric #8, the semi-satisfying sound of half the damage dealing potential inflicted upon the face of the Giant Ant sparked the slim hope that the Clerics would somehow survive the peril of the Giant Ants!

10 of the Giant Ants attacking the Clerics have not suffered any damage! Only 1 Giant Ant is Unconscious with Grievous Wounds! But it has begun twitching!

ThunnGarr was more fortunate this time as three of the Giant Ants among those surrounding the Giant Dwarf [2 row 4, 5 row 2 and 3 row 2] lay twitcing in the Dark Arena sands, but unable to arise and strike!

More importantly, Ants 1 row 4, 3 row 3 and 4 row 2 missed ThunnGarr completely, while his Shield of Bashing barely withstood the attack of Ant 3 row 4, but Ant 4 row 4 on his right side managed to sink a deep bite into his unprotected right leg for near maximum damage!

ThunnGarr merely grunted as he shook the attacker from his leg while surveying the sands of battle to see how his teammates were faring.

Off in the distance to his left he saw Bumble Brew staring down at Ant 1 row 3 that lay twitching in the Dark Arena sands. She was safe for the moment as an unexpected newcomer in the form of a Wolverine was clinging to the back of Ant 1 row 2 as it tried to shake the Wolverine off to no avail and was unable to bite the clinging creature!

The Giant Dwarf swiftly realized that Cunning Fox and Sir Yder were in no immediate danger as Ant 1 row 5 lay twitcing in the Dark Arena sands in front of the Knight; while Ullrich managed to avoid the bite of Ant 2 row 3 as Ant 2 row 2 lay between Sir Yder and Ullrich also mysteriously twitching in the Dark Arena sands!

ThunnGarr then looked to his far right and beheld Ariane the Paladin withstand the lunging bite of Ant 5 row 4 as its mandibles were unable to penetrate her armor!

She seemed oblivious to the fact in the heat of battle that Ant 4 row 3 had totally missed her as it tried to maneuver itself for a tasty bite!

Amberlyn stood her ground confident in The Light as Ant 2 row 5 broke through her defenses to launch a vicious attack against her, but her Armor proved to be more than ample to keep the Knight of The Light from harm!

Shandra proved to be too much of a moving target for Ant 3 row 5 as it completely missed the Monk, but Ant 4 row 5 managed to nip her left leg with a third of its potential damage dealing ability!

The Monk drew more inspiration from The Light as she determined which Ant to counter attack to make her opponents pay for her few drops of blood that dotted the Dark Arena sands!

As the Giant Dwarf turned his gaze back to his immediate opponents that surrounded him, ThunnGarr the Mighty noticed Ants 1, 2 and 3 from row 1 twitching with new life!

However, Ants 4 and 5 from row 1 were beyond reviving!

Shandra lost 2hp and has 10 remaining, while ThunnGarr lost 5hp and has 46 remaining!

Choose Your Counter Attacks and Remember the Twitching Ants and the Warning from Ollie Gory!
