Subject: DROGO TULK Drogo Shares the Potions

Drogo Tulk was a fast learner as Wymon Whitefoot led him through the Thorn Hedge. He was surprised at how natural it was for him to walk his way through the Thorn barrier. He was greeted by the Halfling Canines who took to him as if he had always lived at The Halfling Community.

He was wanting to see Eva Whitefoot, but according to her father Wymon, the young Halfling Fighter would have to wait until Saturday to see her in person at The Betrothal Ceremony. That was just fine with Drogo, because he had plenty of reading to do and was required to spend time greeting and talking with the halflings who came to meet this Halfling of Legend in person.

The young Halfling Fighter receives a Rusty Tan Bag of Tricks from one of the emissaries of The Halfling Community. This small sack appears to be normal and empty of contents. However, anyone reaching into the bag feels a small fuzzy ball at the bottom.

If the ball is removed and tossed up to 20 feet away, it turns into an animal that serves the character that drew it from the bag for 10 minutes (or until slain or ordered back into the bag) at which point it disappears.

Any animals produced are always random and only 1 may exist at a time. Up to 10 animals can be drawn from the bag each week.

This particular Rusty Tan Bag of Tricks will produce either a Brown Grizzly Bear, a Wolf, a Boar or a Tiger. (Drogo keeps this bag for himself to use since it was a gift from a halfling emmisary!)

Drogo was quite impressed with this extraordinary gift that was unexpectedly provided by an emissary of The Halfling Community. From what Drogo had heard already, plus what Wymon Whitefoot confided to him as they passed through the Thorn Hedge, Drogo was glad to have some extra help to battle whatever evil would be encountered in The Barren Wood and The Black Tooth Ridge.

When he visited the Hafners (after the first opportunity that he was able to slip away from the curious halflings that came to visit with him after his meditation time in his Manual of Bodily Health) the young Halfling Fighter was surprised at how much these human healers knew about halflings.

He was quite surprised at their knowledge of The Halfling of Legend and the company of unlikely heroes that would defy a curse and fight against the unknown evils beyond the borders of Botkinburg. These humans were convinced that Drogo and his Crimson Crusaders Clan members were the ones foretold in the halfling prophecies and legends.

Drogo decided to test exactly how much the Hafners believed that he and his companions were the ones they thought they were. He boldly asked the Hafners for any additional healing items in exchange for his promise to fully investigate the surrounding areas in The Barren Wood and The Black Tooth Ridge to eliminate any and all evil creatures they discovered during their journey.

In addition, Drogo also promised to protect Botkinburg if the inhabitants were ever in danger while Drogo and his Crimson Crusaders Clan members were near enough to fight against any unknown evils that dared to invade the area.

The Hafners were quite pleased with Drogo's promise and said something about The Halfling of Legend would do such a thing whenever he arrived in Botkinburg, so Lars went into his storage area and brought back 8 Cure Serious Wounds Potions and 2 Cure Critical Wounds Potions.

Lars explained that each flask held enough of the potions for 2 doses and was quite pleased when Drogo mentioned that he would make sure that each of his companions received a flask of the Cure Serious Wounds to carry and use on either themselves or someone else when the need arose.

Drogo could not stay with the Hafners much longer than to receive the Potions and drink some herb tea and eat some berry snacks. He was needed back at The Halfling Community because his very presence was an encouragement to the halflings who had been preparing for battle against the unknown evil that was building its forces far beyond the borders of Botkinburg.

The young Halfling Fighter took the time to listen to the concerns of the halflings who visited him and he was very meticulous in asking them questions about what they knew was transpiring in The Barren Wood and along The Black Tooth Ridge.

Drogo assured them that he and his companions would do everything possible to protect Botkinburg and to eliminate whatever evil presence was lurking in The Barren Wood and The Black Tooth Ridge.

He was the first Crimson Crusader to share with his Clan members the information gathered from the halflings in Botkinburg and he made sure that each Crimson Crusader received a flask of the Cure Serious Wounds Potion.

Since he realized that Rhiannon the Monk was determined to wreak vengeance on those responsible for attacking the Ruby River Boat and upon whatever evil was responsible for the deaths of her Amazon Sisters, the young Halfling Fighter chose to give her the other flask containing the Cure Critical Wounds Potion, while he chose to keep the other one in his possession.

There was no telling who may need a healthy dose of the Cure Critical Wounds Potion and Drogo did not want to make a mistake as to who to entrust with the second flask, so he kept it in his possession for himself to use on whoever would need it most in the days ahead.

Drogo listened intently to each of his comrades as they informed each other about what they had learned and what had been given to each of them. Drogo was certain that all the Healing Items were being given to this War Party because there were dangers greater than anyone possibly realized.

When he heard about the weapons that were given, the young Halfling Fighter was more certain that they would be facing dangers untold and dangers unknown. They would have to use their gifts wisely, especially the Staff and Wands that only had 50 Charges!

They would have to be alert and on guard once they left Botkinburg, because there was no telling what evil awaited to destroy these Crimson Crusaders in The Barren Wood and The Black Tooth Ridge.

When Shayleigh shared the information about The Halfling of Legend and his unlikely band of heroes that she had deciphered from the parchment at The Chancel, the young Halfling Fighter became more convinced that he and his companions were the ones prophesied who would come to Botkinburg.

"I Am Who I Am and We Are Who We Are!" thought Drogo to himself.

Subject: BLUDDGRINN BluddGrinn Gathers Information

BluddGrinn enjoyed staying in The Halfling Community with Drogo and the others. Sometimes he would poke his head inside the burrows of the halflings who greeted him, but it merely reminded him of how he used to live under the foothills of the Aratock Mountains.

The young War Cleric vowed that he would do his best to help preserve the way of life of these halflings. He did not want any of them to experience the heartaches and sorrows of the losses that he himself had suffered those many years ago.

So BluddGrinn was all the more diligent to study his Tome of Leadership and Influence each morning until the early afternoon, before going to see Tirten Shodfoot as his daily routine had become over the past 4 days.

At first Tirten did not even want to speak with the young dwarf because of some misunderstandings between the Butcher and his own dwarf clan many long years ago, but when BluddGrinn mentioned that his mentor The Tinker told him to look up an old friend in Botkinburg, the countenance of Tirten changed dramatically!

When the Butcher realized that this was the apprentice that The Tinker had entrusted him to give the Staff of Power to, he readily agreed to drive the weapons wagon and journey with his Crimson Crusaders Clan to eradicate the evil emanating from The Black Tooth Ridge!

That very Staff of Power proved useful in gaining an audience with the wizard Aldadius Mastinfelderin, who confirmed to the young War Cleric that many unknown dangers were lurking about in The Barren Wood and The Black Tooth Ridge.

He advised BluddGrinn to use the 50 Charges in the Staff of Power wisely, also noting that whenever the charges were used up that the +2 Quarterstaff would prove to be quite useful in combating any UnDead that he and his Crimson Crusaders comrades may encounter.

Uncle Ferkin also proved to be a very informative source of information from his experience of battling Orcs, which BluddGrinn was enthusiastically drawing from the old soldier's experience, noting how the hated Orcs fought on the surface world, as he had only fought them underground.

BluddGrinn looked forward to battling Orcs on the surface world, be it in The Barren Wood or The Black Tooth Ridge, as long as the young War Cleric had plenty of opportunity to bloody his blades against his hated foes, promising to make them pay for the loss of Uncle Ferkin's arm!

But the young War Cleric chose to spend most of his free time eating choice meats with Tirten and drinking ale into the late evening, gleaning from the Butcher anything he could possibly use to become a better opponent against whatever evils were lurking upon the surface of The Realm of New Aenochia.

When he gathered with his Crimson Crusaders Clan on Friday night, he gladly received the potion of Cure Serious Wounds from Drogo Tulk of the Short Swords. He also took note of the prophecy parchment that Shayleigh had deciphered, as well as all of the ominous forebodings of unknown dangers seeming to lurk everywhere outside of Botkinburg!

Although there was news of Orcs drawing dangerously close to Botkinburg, there was no indication from the gathered information that that particular War Band of Orcs would actually dare draw too close to the town, what with the Emerald Crusaders on patrol and the Gold Crusaders defending the perimeters of what had now become “home” to the young War Cleric.

He was ready to defend Botkinburg at a moments notice, should there be even the slightest indication that the War Band of Orcs would draw near enough to threaten the safety of the inhabitants. If they did decide to attack the unsuspecting population, then BluddGrinn hoped it would be before they began their journey to The Black Tooth Ridge on Wednesday morning!

Later that night he spent some time down at the pond conversing with his deity Steel The Dwarven God of War, petitioning him to look favorably upon The Halfling Community and to do anything in his power to prevent any Orcs from spoiling The Betrothal Ceremony that was to take place between Drogo Tulk of the Short Shorts and his beloved Eva Whitefoot on the morrow!

Should any Orcs come within smelling range of Botkinburg, the young War Cleric was ready to face them alone if need be, to prevent them from spoiling his young Halfling Fighter friend's happiness!

Subject: CASTLE KEEPER Crimson Crusaders Share Information

Botkinburg 9pm
The Halfling Community
Friday, May 11, 30awd (After Winter Dark)

It had been an interesting 4 days for the 8 Crimson Crusaders as they gathered together in The Halfling Community to share information, to disclose what extra items they were given and distribute any items to their Clan mates that would be helpful for the overall good of the Crimson Crusaders Clan.

Brenys and Shayleigh had chosen to avail themselves to the hospitality of a room at The Bent Hook aka House of Sludge and to have their gold and future treasures stored at The Keep under the watchful eye of the Lady Marchessa Fabressa and her consort Gideon.

Drogo, BluddGrinn, Karvilo, Trossach, Tohmaz and Rhiannon had chosen the hospitality of the halflings in The Halfling Community to camp out under a large awning pitched near a large spring fed pond where they could go swimming or fishing if they choose to do so.

The Halfling Community is approximately 500 yards long and 500 yards wide, with burrows built into the opposite side of Bafler Hill or built underground. A Halfling Thorn Hedge seems to blend into the countryside, but when approached up close one discovers the thorn hedge is at least 10 feet thick and 10 feet high.

The thorns on all of the vines are extremely sharp and resistant to damage. Just touching the hedge can tear clothes or pull at armor so that one falls deeper into the hedge. Any patch of the hedge does 3d4 points of damage to one trying to chop their way through or pull their way out.

Unknown to those not familiar with the hedges is the fact that the lowest foot and a half of the hedge vines have no thorns. It is easy for halflings to move their way through such hedges.

The oldest of halfling towns have several layers of these hedges surrounding the town with only one opening in the hedges down the main road. The Halfling Community has found a way to construct a swinging gate that completely encloses the entrance if the inhabitants are threatened by an attack.

This particular Friday evening the gate is open and the 8 Crimson Crusaders are treated to a small feast of fruits and assorted beverages as they relate to each other what they have discovered the past 4 days:

The following is a brief synopsis for each PC Character from which information and magic items are provided for the good use of The Crimson Crusaders Clan members:

Drogo Tulk of the Short Swords

When they left The Swilling Swan that previous Monday evening, Wymon Whitefoot led the way and showed Drogo how to traverse The Thorn Hedge without hurting himself or damaging his equipment.

After opening the gate for the others to enter The Halfling Community, the inhabitants gathered to greet the 6 Crimson Crusaders and to get a close look at The Halfling of Legend and his unlikely companions.

Many breed Halfling Canines the size of ponies and they come in all colors, breeding them mainly for size and look. These creatures are wonderful with halfling children, but are fierce protectors of halfling lands. Their fur is very thick and rough allowing them to only take half damage from edged weapons.

Halfling Canines are totally immune to fire spells. Their fur carry a heavy load of moisture making them take half damage from normal fires. These Halfling Canines sniff the 5 Crimson Crusaders who accompany Drogo Tulk and are satisfied that his companions mean the halflings no harm!

Drogo spent most of his time under the awning to study his Manual of Bodily Health, usually between the hours of 6am and 2pm before allowing himself the luxury of meeting the various halflings who sought to speak with him.

He would spend time down by the pond dancing with his twin short swords in worship to his deity Preston Tallfellow. Many halflings were gathered to watch and afterwards he would talk with them about the various rumors of evil lurking in The Barren Wood and across The Hruesen River in and around The Black Tooth Ridge.

Drogo was able to visit with the Hafners long enough to learn that they knew much about the halfling lore from those who would come to their home for healing and herbs. They were convinced that according to the Legends they had heard that Drogo and his friends were the ones foretold in the various prophecies of halfling legends.

Most importantly, the Hafners recognized that Drogo and his Crimson Crusaders companions were the only ones up until this point in time who could possibly survive the rigors of The Black Tooth Ridge.

As a result of Drogo promising that he and his companions would risk their very lives to protect the inhabitants of Botkinburg, the Hafners gave him the following potions to help him and his companions to return to Botkinburg victorious and treasure laden:

8 Potions of Cure Serious Wounds and 2 Potions of Cure Critical Wounds. Each Potion Flask may be used twice.

Drogo keeps 1 Cure Serious Wounds for himself and gives 1 to each of his 7 comrades and he keeps 1 Cure Critical Wounds for himself and gives the other to Rhiannon the Monk.

BluddGrinn the Grim
BluddGrinn also studies his Tome of Leadership and Influence each day between 6am and 2pm in the company of Drogo either under the awning or down by the pond.

When the War Cleric meets with Tirten Shodfoot the Butcher, he is treated rather poorly since the Butcher was falsely accused by his clan in the Aneer'rafe Hills for theft, but quickly warms up to the War Cleric when BluddGrinn mentions his mentor The Tinker and their personal war against Orcs and other minions of The Horned One under the Aratock Mountains.

Tirten agrees to drive the Weapons Wagon and produces a Staff of Power that The Tinker told Tirten to conceal for safe keeping until his apprentice would one day find his way to Botkinburg.

The Staff of Power is a very potent magic item, with offensive and defensive abilities. It is topped with a glistening Ruby gem, its shaft straight and smooth. This Staff has 50 Charges with the following Powers and Charges:
Magic Missle (1 Charge)
Ray of Enfeeblement (1 Charge)
Continual Flame (1 Charge)
Levitate (1 Charge)
Lightning Bolt (1 Charge)
Fireball (1 Charge)
Cone of Cold (2 Charges)
Hold Monster (2 Charges)
Wall of Force (in a 10 foot diameter hemisphere around the caster only) (2 Charges)
Globe of Invulnerability (2 Charges)

The wielder of The Staff of Power gains a +2 to bonus to armor class and all saving throws. The staff is also a +2 Quarterstaff and its wielder may use it to smite opponents in melee combat. If 1 charge is expended during a melee attack (as a free action), the staff causes double damage for 1 round.

After all charges are used up from the staff, it remains a +2 Quarterstaff. BluddGrinn keeps this staff for himself as it is a gift from The Tinker for such a time as this!

BluddGrinn carries this Staff of Power with him to The Keep and has a good conversation with the wizard Aldadius Mastinfelderin, mainly because he is carrying the Staff of Power and also swaps Orc War Stories with Uncle Frekin.

But he spends most of his spare time at The Butcher Shoppe getting to know Tirten and his information about the evils lurking outside Botkinburg, while eating choice meat and drinking ale with this old friend of his mentor The Tinker.

Karvilo the Unseen
When the Elf Ranger enters The Halfling Community he is swarmed by halflings who are shouting that Karvilo is the one who rescued some halflings who were under attack by a band of Road Gnomes!

One of the cousins of the family that Karvilo rescued gives him a magic item that he had found in the ruins of an ancient healing temple, while on his way to Botkinburg to aid The Halfling Community from the threat of the unknown evil lurking beyond the borders of The Realm of New Aenochia.

Wand of Heal is a thin baton that contains a Level 6 Cleric Spell that wipes away disease and injury. It completely cures all point damage, all diseases, blindness, deafness and all temporary ability damage,.

It neutralizes poisons in the subject's system, so that no additional damage or effects are suffered. It nullifies a feeblemind spell. It cures mental disorders caused by nature, spell, or injury to the brain.

Heal does not remove negative levels, restore permanently drained levels, or restore permanently drained ability scores. If used against an undead creature, heal acts as its reverse, harm. Harm drains the target of all but 4 hit points and causes disease in the subject (see remove disease). If used against an undead creature, harm acts like heal.

This Wand of Heal has 50 Charges and each charge expended uses 1 spell one time. When this Wand runs out of Charges, it becomes a non-magical stick.

This Wand is 6 inches long, made of wood, with a tiny Ruby gem at its tip. Karvilo chooses to keep this Wand of Heal in his possession for use when other potions or spells are unavailable to heal himself or his Crimson Crusaders Clan mates!

Karvilo spends his time studying his Manual of Quickness of Action usually under the awning or down by the pond with his other comrades.

His curiosity was piqued by the house of Grunald Horfane that hung halfway in the water. Karvilo strikes up a friendship with Grunald, spending time with him on top of his house each late afternoon and evening talking about the orcs, goblins and other creatures that Grunald has seen lurking across the
Hruesen River under the shadow of The Black Tooth Ridge.

Wednesday night Grunald invites Karvilo into his house to meet the water nymph that comes up through a hole in his floor every night to talk with him. She is an extremely beautiful creature with green hair flowing over her naked breasts. Grunald has fallen in love with her!

She informs Karvilo that there are many dangers near the waters of the Hruesen River and to be on guard against the various creatures that lurk near the edge of the river. The water is not safe!

The water nymph is able to make the morning mists on the river from dissipating until late in the day. She also has hidden melodies in her voice that can lure victims to their doom in the water, but she takes a liking to Karvilo and warns him to watch out for the hidden dangers along the river!

Trossach the Barbarian
When Trossach enters The Halfling Community he is swarmed by little children who want to touch the Crimson Crusader who pulled the bleeding corpse from off the top of The Halfling of Legend. He is a hero to the halflings and they present him with a quiver full of 20 Slaying Arrows for aiding Drogo!

Slaying Arrows are +1 arrows that are magically attuned to a particular type or subtype of creature. These particular Arrows Slay Orcs! If one of these Slaying Arrows strike an Orc, the target must make a Constitution Save or Die Instantly! Trossach has the choice of sharing any of these Slaying Arrows with his Crimson Crusaders comrades, or using them himself, when they are fighting Orcs!

Trossach also spends his time under the awning or down by the pond reading his Manual of Quickness of Action during the same time his other 3 companions read theirs.

His visit with Uncle Ferkin at The Keep provides the Barbarian with valuable information as to how ruthless Orcs can be when attacking people or places they think are defenseless!

When he visits the Farrier Greden Merkmen, the Barbarian learns that Greden is actually the only surviving member of the River Wardens in this area. River Wardens are sworn to oppose the minions of The Horned One and Greden is convinced that the minions of The Horned One are gathering their forces somewhere in The Black Tooth Ridge!

He provides Trossach with some valuable information and warns the Barbarian that many dangers lurk along the banks and in the waters of The Hruesen River!

Greden is one of the few surviving River Wardens and is exploring the river bank on the Botkinburg side of the river while trapping and hunting. He remains aloof from the rest of the community, zealously guarding his true identity, lest the minions of The Horned One learn of his existence.

The River Wardens were supposedly all destroyed by the minions of The Horned One, because they are feared for their knowledge and abilities to defeat the minions of The Horned One.

After his third visit, Greden trusts Trossach and gives him a gift that he has been hiding until such a time as the unknown evils across the river could be confronted by either himself, his fellow River Wardens (who may be dead for all he knows!) or by a worthy hero who is brave enough to confront and destroy the minions of The Horned One!

+2 Oath Bow is a white +2 composite long bow that whispers “Swift defeat to my enemies!” when knocked and pulled. If the firer swears aloud to slay his target, the bow's whisper becomes the low shout “Swift death to those who have wronged me!”

Against such a sworn enemy the bow has a +5 enchantment bonus and arrows launched from it deal an additional 1d6 points of damage.

However, the bow is treated as a +1 weapon against all foes other than the sworn enemy. These bonuses and penalties last for 7 days or until the sworn enemy is slain or destroyed by the wielder of the Oath Bow, whichever comes first.

The Oath Bow may only have one sworn enemy at a time. Once the wielder swears to slay a target, he cannot make a new oath until he has slain that target or 7 days have passed.

Even if the wielder slays the sworn enemy on the same day that he makes the oath, he cannot activate the Oath Bows special power again until 24 hours have passed from the time he made the oath. (Trossach decides to keep the Oath Bow for himself because the River Warden trusted him enough to take him into his confidence and to give him the Oath Bow!)

Trossach finds little of value from the Woodsmen brothers as they are more apt to drink and want more than any fair share of treasures. They do tell the Barbarian while in their drunken stupor that it has become too dangerous in many parts of The Barren Wood and especially near Fromkin's Pass to go treasure hunting!

One of the halflings named Buckeye Shipp (Area 25) tells Trossach that south of Botkinburg in The Barren Wood near the wagon trail that leads to Fromkin's Pass that he spotted some strange signs in the woods while cutting and hauling wood:

“The Trees were bent back at the tops, as if something were looking through the high spots all about!” He fervently believes that a giant or something is about in The Barren Wood in the direction where these 8 Crimson Crusaders will be travelling to cross the river to The Black Tooth Ridge!

(Area 9) Edgar and Meekal tell Trossach, “There are more than just animals along that ridge, there are evil things a 'flittin' about now!”

(Area 10) Old Man Nestor tells Trossach that the signs along The Black Tooth Ridge indicate that the evils of The Horned One are gathering together as they once did long ago! He hears strange sounds carried on the wind late at night and puts food offerings on his porch for the fey (wood pixies) for his protection!

(Area 11) Trossach makes a call upon Aaron von Bedering, but the sheriff is no where to be found when the Barbarian looks for him! His helper Erhardt takes the Barbarian into his confidence as he tells Trossach that he is a member of a secretive order of woodsmen of holy lineage.

The Guardians of The Tree, a group devoted to hunting down and locating any remnants of The Horned One's agents. Erhardt came to Botkinburg months ago to investigate persistent rumors of an ancient and rising evil along The Black Tooth Ridge! He scouts about when he can get away from the sheriff to investigate the stolen cattle and pigs and other strange rumors about town.

As he walks about Botkinburg the Barbarian hears the following from passers by who are a bit afraid to engage the Half Orc in lengthy conversation:

“Daemons is out at nights … watch you feed 'em well laddie!”

“Thase a witch in the woods … and her familiars are here!”

“Eatin' them halflang foods 'eel get ya killed for shure!”

“Someone here is giving them Red Caps some information!”

“The Black Tooth Ridge is home to evil sorcerers … the living dead … and much worse!”

“There's more gold in The Black Tooth Ridge than in all the south kingdoms!”

“I fear there is more about than thieving … ancient evil I says!”

“I know one thing only … The Witch King is back again!”

Tohmaz the Shaman
Tohmaz enjoys the gardens and simple way of life of the halfling farmers, but chooses to rise early and go to (Area 4) The Oak Grove and Shrine to read his Tome of Leadership and Influence. (He is accompanied by Rhiannon the Monk that first day!)

Off the town square is a large and sloping hill upon the top of which is a tremendous oak. The ground about the base of the hill is well worn and dusty from many years of use during festivals and markets. The upper portion of the hill is covered in thick and verdant green grass and flowers, all year round, despite any weather. The oak is likewise festooned with bright green leaves year round.

The Great Oak is a holy place where many come to offer worship to the deities of the sun, moon and harvest. There is no cleric or druid which watches over the tree, but many travel to Botkinburg to worship here. The Great Oak is covered in many glyphs that have been seared into its bark. They were placed there by the servants of Mordius, the Lady of the Forests, many centuries ago when the tree acted as a receptacle for the deity's will.

Those who stop to worship or admire The Great Oak do not disturb the Shaman or the Monk during their meditations.

When he goes to The Keep the Shaman makes sure that the Lady Marchessa Fabressa is informed that Gisela Hafner asked him to come minister to Clement Botkin. The Hafners have already informed the Botkins that the Shaman has been invited to The Keep and he is expected. (Rhiannon is with him!)

Clement is too far gone for a Rain Dance due to the ravages of old age and a hard life in his younger years adventuring and protecting his namesake city!

The Shaman tries his best to comfort Clement and during a moment of marked improvement, Clement Botkin sits bolt upright in his bed, grips the Shaman's and Monk's arms, wildly proclaiming:

"The Minions of The Horned One Are Near! The Minions of The Horned One Are Near!"

Then Clement collapses upon his bed with a serene smile, content that he has delivered his message to someone who will do something about the unknown evil beyond the borders of Botkinburg! His health seems to have improved from the Shaman's attention.

Aldadius Mastinfelderin the wizard friend of Clement Botkin was near at hand to witness this tableau and thanks the Shaman and the Monk for attending to his long time friend.

They go to another quarters where Aldadius informs the duo that if anyone knows there is unknown evil from the minions of The Horned One near at hand, then it would be Clement Botkin, who spent his best years battling those dark agents of evil throughout The Barren Wood and The Black Tooth Ridge.

Aldadius gives Tohmaz a Pearl of Power that once per day on command enables the possessor to recall and cast again for a second time any 2 of his Level 2 Spells that he has already cast for that day! He does this because of the kindness shown to his friend Clement Botkin!

Uncle Ferkin (who lost his arm in battle with an orc) informs the Shaman that he would rather remain with only one arm as a reminder to others of the voracity and danger that orcs present in battle! He does however take a shine to Rhiannon and offers her a special gift (see Rhiannon the Monk for more info!)

As for Mertin von Stock (Area 15) he welcomes the good will of the Shaman to invoke a blessing upon his garden and milk cows, but will only say that he has a checkered past that his is not proud of and does not want to discuss it with the Shaman.

The Kellers (Area 16) welcome the Shaman to bless their milking cows and cheeses, confiding in the Shaman that the road to Ludensheim and other markets have become too dangerous for the family to travel alone to sell their wares. They are now reduced to hiring armed guards to escort them once every winter to Ludensheim when the roads are less travelled and evil creatures seem to hibernate!

(Area 5) The Tinker's Caravan at the base of the hill on the Oak Grove is used as the town market or gathering place for festivals. There are 3 wagons drawn up and several families of tinkers are here now. They travel far and wide through the region and collect and sell all manner of items.

Farank and Helda are newlyweds staying at The Bent Hook and Garfeld the Leader of the Caravan is quite concerned about the lovely young maiden who has disappeared. He informs the Shaman that for the past several months they have had to be escorted by Emerald Crusaders and other Swords for Hire as The Barren Wood is alive with unhealthy creatures and vagabond robbers or worse!

They have been attacked by robbers and lurking creatures in the shadows of the wood have been encountered and chased off by their armed escorts! They plan to stay here for the foreseeable future!

As for Lars and Gisela Hafner at The House of D'Amter, the Shaman is informed that any frog parts or bird parts or lizard parts or the parts of any other creatures are suitable for his purposes. They talk of many things pertaining to herbs and healing, but Lars does not give any more potions to the Shaman as he is content that what Drogo Tulk received is more than ample for their upcoming journey to The Black Tooth Ridge!

Rhiannon the Monk
As mentioned previously, the Monk accompanies Tohmaz the first day (see references under Tohmaz the Shaman for further details!) and studies her Manual of Gainful Exercise.

Uncle Ferkin informs her that he no longer has need of his Bracers of Deflection since he lost an arm battling an orc during an adventure with Clement Botkin! He lost his arm while saving Clement's life!

Bracers of Deflection double a Monk's innate bonus to dodge or deflect hurled items or weapons. Any character other than a Monk receives a +2 to armor class. This effect does not stack with worn armor. Rhiannon chooses to use these Bracers of Deflection for herself after what happened to her on the Ruby River Boat during the journey to Botkinburg!

Rhiannon spends her other days either in the company of the Shaman or down by the pond in The Halfling Community during the time she needs to read her Manual of Gainful Exercise (her choice of locations for study!).

While the Shaman makes his rounds, Rhiannon the Monk concentrates on surveying the perimeter of Botkinburg, learning what she can about its defenses by the Emerald and Gold Crusaders,

She discovers that most of them do not want to come anywhere near a Crimson Crusader, but her prowess with weapons and Amazon beauty draws a handful of them to answer her questions as she demonstrates her talents with weapons!

No one has a clue regarding the origins of the mysterious Black Lightning Bolts on the bolts and arrows that have claimed the lives of Gold, Emerald and Crimson Crusaders!

The Red Cap Goblins are becoming more bold in their raids upon Botkinburg, numerous creatures have been heard and seen lurking about and traces of Orc War Bands have been found throughout The Barren Wood and are showing signs of drawing dangerously close to Botkinburg!

Brenys the Rogue
Brenys chooses to go to The Bent Hook with Shayleigh to stay in a room, but does go with the Bard to The Chancel to study her Tome of Leadership and Influence.

She is not much interested in studying or deciphering other parchments once she has studied for 8 hours each day, so she walks around town and gleans much of the same information from the Gold and Emerald Crusaders as Rhiannon has done.

Brenys shares a private room with Shayleigh, but she delights in pulling pranks on a dwarf assassin named Gurdin who is also staying at the House of Sludge. She switches his full mug for an empty mug and even hides some of his mason tools when he is not looking.

Uther Shoder is a knight staying at The Bent Hook who becomes quite taken with Brenys. He is from a barony to the south and after being rebuffed by Volkmar Botkin, is seeking some stout hearted adventurers to help him wrest away his inheritance and lands from an uncle who he claims has illegally taken possession of what is rightfully his. He travels with 2 retainers who guard him in his room.

Uther gives Brenys a Stone of Alarm as a token of his affections. This is a stone cube that when given a command word, affixes itself to any object. If that object is touched thereafter by anyone who does not first speak the same command word, the stone emits a piercing screech for 1 hour that can be heard up to a quarter mile away (assuming no intervening barriers). She keeps this for her own use!

Brenys does find favor with Mertin von Stock as she curiously investigates the rumors that he has some type of dark secret. Mertin takes her into his confidence and tells her that he used to be a notorious highwayman when he was a young man, but left that life behind when he journeyed to Botkinburg about 15 years ago and met his wife, who died after giving birth to their second child.

Mertin teaches Brenys a few tricks of the trade as one rogue to another, then gives her a Ring of Evasion from his secret stash of stolen goods! This platinum ring continually grants the wearer the ability to avoid damage by dodging.

The wearer must make a dexterity save whenever attacked. If the save is failed, the wearer takes half damage, a successful save results in no damage at all. Brenys keeps this ring for her personal use!

Mertin informs Brenys that too much evil is afoot these days in The Barren Wood and across The Hruesen River and lurking in the crags and crevices of The Black Tooth Ridge. He gives her the ring for her safety because she reminds him of his dead wife!

Shayleigh the Bard
Shayleigh the Bard enjoys singing and reciting poetry at The Bent Hook aka House of Sludge in the evenings after studying her Manual of Quickness of Action at The Chancel and then casually looking at any parchments she may want to try to decipher.

Malinamous a human wizard who a few months ago decided that it was too dangerous to explore The Barren Wood or The Black Tooth Ridge by himself, has become quite taken with Shayleigh. He rooms at The House of Sludge and gives her a Wand of Chain Lightning to aid her in her quest as a Crimson Crusader about to explore the unknown of The Black Tooth Ridge!

Bolts of lightning spring from this 50 Charge 6 inch wooden wand, striking a target and then arcing to other targets within 50 feet of the prime target. The bolt deals 1d6 points of damage per caster level on the primary target.

After the bolt strikes, the lightning can arc to as many secondary targets as the caster has levels. The secondary bolts each strike one target and deal half as many dice of damage as the primary (rounded down). All subjects can attempt dexterity saving throws for half damage.

The character chooses the secondary targets, but they must all be within 50 feet of the primary target, and no target can be struck more than once. The character can choose to affect fewer secondary targets than the maximum.

This wand uses 1 Charge per action and becomes a non-magical stick once it has been used 50 times! Shayleigh decides to keep the Ruby tipped wand for her own use!

Shayleigh also uses her charms to learn from the Gold Crusaders that many unexplainable dangers are lurking about in The Barren Wood and across the river in the shadow of The Black Tooth Ridge!

She also discovers some interesting information from a parchment that she deciphers at The Chancel that very Friday afternoon:

The Halfling of Legend is no ordinary halfling. Taller than the average halfling he is known to be a Tall Fellow Halfling that has developed Dark Vision to a distance of 30 feet. Otherwise he is identical to other average halflings.

There is a curious birth mark above his heart and his parentage is unknown. He will arrive in the northern territories of a New Realm at a time when a great unknown evil once again seeks to enslave the populace south of its borders.

He will be in the company of an unlikely band of heroes who have abilities and talents far beyond his own. They will be the ones to turn the tide against this unknown evil. The Halfling of Legend is merely the sign of their coming!

One Not Touched by Bolts or Arrows!

One Who Hates Orcs!

One Who Shoots Fire From His Bow!

One Who Carries a Glowing Blade!

One Who Heals!

One Who Seeks Vengeance!

One Who Inspires War Poems!

One Halfling Who Fights Beside Them!

One Prankster Who Aids Them!

One Dwarf Who Wars Before Them!

One Half Orc Who Protects Them!

One Elf Who Walks Unseen Among Them!

One Healer Who Serves Them!

One Warrior Who Uses Magic Helps Them!

One War Poet Who Inspires Them!

This Tall Fellow will do what he must to protect his betrothed, by journeying with this odd assortment of battle companions, who choose to join themselves together as a Clan of Curse Defiers!

The 8 Crimson Crusaders share the information they have gathered and pledge to use the items they have been given to help each other eradicate any evil they encounter!

As they show each other what they have found for the good of the Clan; the Ranger, the Rogue, the Barbarian, the Monk and the Bard sense a transformation beginning to take place deep within them!

Karvilo the Ranger will become a Level 4 Ranger on Tuesday, May 15.
[Upon reaching Level 4 Karvilo will have 44 Hit Points instead of 33 Hit Points!]

Brenys the Rogue will become a Level 5 Rogue on Saturday, May 19.
At 5th level, a back attack deals triple damage.

[Upon reaching Level 5 Brenys will have 40 Hit Points instead of 32 Hit Points!]

Trossach the Barbarian will become a Level 4 Barbarian on Tuesday, May 15.
WHIRLWIND ATTACK: At 4th level, a barbarian’s combat sense and athleticism merge in a fearsome and deadly ability. With this ability, the barbarian can combat multiple enemies surrounding him. The barbarian must announce use of the ability before attacking and he cannot retreat before using it.

The whirlwind attack is usable only once per combat encounter and replaces their normal combat action. When used, the barbarian gains an attack roll against two opponents as long as those enemies are within 5 feet or less of the barbarian and possess no more than one-half of the barbarian’s hit dice. For example, two second level fighters attempt to jump a barbarian in an alley; the barbarian may make a whirlwind attack, gaining one attack against each of the fighters.

The number of foes subject to the whirlwind attack increases as the barbarian rises in levels. At 6th level the barbarian can attack up to 3 opponents, and at 10th level a barbarian can attack 4 opponents. The ability does not progress beyond 10th level.

[Upon reaching Level 4 Trossach will have 60 Hit Points instead of 45 Hit Points!]

CORRECTION: Rhiannon the Monk will become a Level 4 Monk on Tuesday, May 15
[Upon reaching Level 4 Rhiannon will have 60 Hit Points instead of 45 Hit Points!]

Shayleigh the Bard will become a Level 4 Bard on Tuesday, May 15
FASCINATE: At 4th level, a bard gains the ability to place a single creature into a trance. The creature to be fascinated must be able to see and hear the bard, and the bard must also see the creature. The creature must be able to pay attention to the bard. The distraction of a nearby combat or other danger will prevent the ability from working. The bard can use song or poetics to produce the intended effect on the creature, through music, poetry, chanting, speech, whistling, playing an instrument or any combination of the above, as long as some verbal performance is included.

Bards can use this ability three times per day, and can maintain the effect for a number of rounds equal to their level. When a bard uses this ability, the target makes a charisma saving throw to resist the bard’s spellsong. If the saving throw fails, the creature sits quietly and listens to the bard for up to the full duration of the effect. While using this ability, a bard must concentrate, as if casting or maintaining a
spell. While fascinated, the target is treated as if prone and also suffers a -4 penalty to all saving throws and a -5 to armor class.

If the creature’s saving throw succeeds, the bard cannot attempt to fascinate that creature again for 24 hours. Any threat that is obvious to the fascinated creature, such as the casting of a spell, drawing of a sword or aiming of a weapon automatically breaks the effect. As the bard rises in levels, the power of the fascination increases as well, allowing the bard to further influence the listener through suggestion. These specialized uses of the fascinate ability can only be performed on creatures who are under the influence of the bard’s fascinate ability.

At 5th level, a bard may attempt a charm person on a fascinated creature. At 8th level, a bard may
attempt to implant a suggestion into a fascinated creature. At 12th level, a bard may attempt antipathy/ sympathy on a fascinated creature. At 18th level, a bard may attempt a mass suggestion on fascinated creatures. In each case, the creature receives a saving throw to attempt to resist the spellsong.

As the bard gains experience, the number of creatures that can be affected by the fascination, or one of its specialized uses, increases. The number of creatures is equal to two fewer than the level of the bard. For example, a 4th level bard can fascinate 2 creatures, a 6th level bard can fascinate 4 creatures, and a 12th level bard can fascinate 10 creatures.

[Upon reaching Level 4 Shayleigh will have 44 Hit Points instead of 33 Hit Points!]

Subject: DROGO TULK Drogo Receives His Halfling Gift

"But you did not come here for small talk ... pardon the pun ... or to hear tales of The Black Tooth Ridge ... or rumors of the arrival of The Halfling of Legend and his companions!

Aside from drinking the First Berry Wine of the season ... You all have come to receive your gift from the populace of The Halfling Community!

All I will say in regards to our earlier meeting at The House of Sludge ... is that the unknown evil threats to our Halfling Community are quite real ... not imagined ... nor are they simply tales to scare our little children ... or to keep our adults from straying too far into The Barren Wood ... or to prevent them from exploring for treasure in The Black Tooth Ridge!"

Drogo Tulk of the Short Swords became a little more at ease as he enjoyed his tankard of First Berry Wine in the company of his Crimson Crusaders Clan and the curious halflings and humans who were seated outside The Swilling Swan.

At least they had not hammered him with questions about being The Halfling of Legend, nor had the halflings embarrassed the young Halfling Fighter in front of his comrades. He had become a bit uncomfortable being in the spotlight and being referred to as The Halfling of Legend, but Wymon Whitefoot had apparently spoken to the halflings to refrain from such conversation presently.

The important point was receiving their gift from The Halfling Community. Such talk of The Halfling of Legend would come soon enough when Drogo would leave The Swilling Swan to be introduced to the folk in The Halfling Community.

At least he was able to enjoy his tankard of First Berry Wine without being put on the spot for the moment, while Wymon Whitefoot emphasized that the dangers of unknown evil beyond the borders of Botkinburg were real and not imagined.

Drogo took solace in the fact that his Crimson Crusaders Clan members were well able to confront such evils with their own combined special abilities. He had never heard any talk of how The Halfling of Legend would defeat those unknown evil foes single handedly with his own abilities.

The young Halfling Fighter was well prepared to do so on his own, but he took heart that he was one of 8 Crimson Crusaders who were vastly different from the Crimson Crusaders who had been slain before they had arrived in Botkinburg.

Drogo planned to blend his abilities with the abilities of his Crimson Crusaders Clan members. He did not have an ego that needed to stand out from the others. He was content to provide his comrades with the needed support of his twin blades, or some well placed arrows or bolts in the heat of battle.

"We have reports from some of our newly arrived halfling emissaries that indisputable evidence of a war band of orcs has drawn dangerously close to our community!

However ... I am sure that the roving bands of Emerald Crusaders will engage them before they can become a dangerous threat to Botkinburg ... plus we have some Gold Crusaders also patrolling the borders of Botkinburg as we speak to ensure the safety of our community!"

As soon as Drogo heard those words he felt a tingling in his heart to go forth and fight against this evil that was drawing so dangerously close to his beloved Eva Whitefoot. The young Halfling Fighter was certain that BloodGrinn would fight them by himself if he caught their scent in the wind.

"I Hate Orcs!" shouted the War Cleric as he slammed his tankard of First Berry Wine on the table as he recalled the distant memories of his battles against his hated foes underneath the Aratock Mountains.

"Orcs!

I Can Smell The Evil Of The Orcs!

I Can Taste The Evil Of The Orcs!

I Want To Fight Orcs!

Let Them Dare To Come Near To Botkinburg!

They Will All Die!

I Promise We Will Eliminate These Orcs If They Are Foolish Enough To Come Here!"

BluddGrinn fairly spat these words out of his mouth as he thought upon how long it had been since he had actually killed an orc in battle.

"It Has Been Too Long Since I Killed An Orc!

Much Too Long Since I Have Faced My Hated Foes In Battle!"

Drogo fairly beamed at this unexpectedly expected outburst from the young War Cleric. At least Drogo was assured that BluddGrinn would not hesitate to engage these reported orcs in the heat of battle!

In fact, truth be told, the young Halfling Fighter realized that BluddGrinn would find any excuse now to go exploring The Barren Wood to fight orcs, before his Crimson Crusaders Clan was able to make all their preparations for exploring The Black Tooth Ridge and ridding the area of unknown evil that was certain to be lurking in the shadows of those eerie crags and fissures!

Then when the halfling maiden poured BluddGrinn another drink of First Berry Wine and told him how much she appreciated his vow to protect her and The Halfling Community from any invading orcs, the response from the War Cleric convinced Drogo that the two of them would soon be bloodying their blades against any orcs foolish enough to draw too near to Botkinburg!

"What is important for the 8 of you Crimson Crusaders … is that our community has come into the rare possession of a collection of rings to aid us in preparation for the coming war against the unknown evil beyond our borders!

From that collection we have 8 Rings of Sustenance that we are freely giving to The Halfling of Legend and the unlikely assortment of heroes that company with him ... to help each member of this Crimson Crusaders Clan to confront the dangers that are threatening our community!

This is our way of saying 'Thank You' for answering the Call for Crusaders sent out by the Empress Pryzmira ... and for your courage to defy the Curse of the Crimson Crusaders ... to help our families!

This pearl ring continually provides its wearer with life sustaining nourishment. The ring also refreshes the body and mind, so that its wearer needs only sleep 2 hours per day to gain the benefit of 8 hours of sleep.

The ring must be worn for a full week before it begins to work. If it is removed, the owner must wear it for another week to reattune it to himself.

So if you will be so kind as to accept this gift from our community ... and put the ring on the finger of your choice ... it will adjust itself to your finger and begin to attune itself to your mind and body ... and should be fully functional by next Monday!"

Drogo Tulk involuntarily cringed at the mention of The Halfling of Legend, but he knew in his heart of hearts that it was the way of Wymon Whitefoot and The Halfling Community to announce to this new Clan of Crimson Crusaders that they were confident that they were the chosen vessels to eradicate the borders of The Realm of New Aenochia from the encroaching unknown evils threatening Botkinburg!

The young Halfling Fighter graciously accepted his pearl Ring of Sustenance and placed it on the ring finger of his right hand, marveling at how the ring adapted itself to his finger, blending into his very skin without a hint of interfering with the grip of his sword hand.

Then turning to his Crimson Crusader War Cleric comrade, Drogo Tulk of the Short Shorts declared:

"You and I will Hunt Orcs Soon Enough Friend BluddGrinn!

You Will Not Be Facing Your Hated Foes Alone!"

BluddGrinn fairly spat these words out of his mouth as he thought upon how long it had been since he had actually killed an orc in battle.

"It Has Been Too Long Since I Killed An Orc!

Much Too Long Since I Have Faced My Hated Foes In Battle!"

BluddGrinn toyed playfully with the Ruby hued Prayer Bead as he quaffed the contents of his tankard.
He grimaced and looked at his Crimson Crusaders Clan, pondering in his own thoughts whether or not any or all would be as enthusiastic to battle his hated foes as the War Cleric was in expressing his desire to battle and eliminate any and all orcs that were foolish enough to draw too near to Botkinburg!

Gripping the edges of his Tome of Leadership and Influence that the young priest Maik Felder had presented to the War Cleric, BluddGrinn dismissed any negative thoughts that would cause him to doubt the voracity of his Crimson Crusader Clan when confronted with his hated foes.

The lure of locating hidden gold and other treasure began to resurface in BluddGrinn's thoughts as a lovely halfling maiden refilled his tankard with First Berry Wine. She leaned forward as she poured his drink and thanked the War Cleric for vowing to protect her and those in Botkinburg from any possible threat from orcs or any other evil thing that may try to harm them!

BluddGrinn the Grim looked the halfling maiden in the eye and assured her once more:

"I Hate Orcs!

I Hate Goblins!

I Hate UnDead Foes Of All Kinds!

I Hate The Minions Of The Horned One!

Any Evil Thing Lurking About That Would Try To Harm You Will Be Slain!"

BluddGrinn raised his tankard as a personal seal of his vow, then became serenely quiet as he focused upon what was being said by Wymon Whitefoot to the 8 Crimson Crusaders:

This pearl ring continually provides its wearer with life sustaining nourishment. The ring also refreshes the body and mind, so that its wearer needs only sleep 2 hours per day to gain the benefit of 8 hours of sleep.

The young War Cleric readily accepted his new Ring of Sustenance and placed it upon his left thumb. He was amazed at the way the enchanted ring seemed to wrap itself around his thumb, almost becoming a part of his skin, promising not to hinder his grip on his battle blade.

"Thank You For This Ring!

This Gift Should Serve Me Well In Battle!"

Topic: The Crimson Crusaders
Subject: CASTLE KEEPER Crimson Crusaders at The Swilling Swan

Botkinburg 4pm
The Swilling Swan
Monday, May 7, 30awd (After Winter Dark)

The Swilling Swan is a small brew house and bar built into the side of Bafler Hill. It is almost exclusively frequented by the halflings in Botkinburg as it is built only to accommodate people of their size. However, some of the humans do gather outside at several tables to partake of the good halfling wines the brew master concocts.

This is usually a jovial place as the owner, Megarin Paracook does this for fun rather than for a living. Having some experience at a winery, when Megarin arrived, he immediately started gathering local berries and set about making wines.

All his wines are seasonal and he often runs short as he does not collect enough ingredients to make enough wine to last the season. When he does have the wine though, he sells it very cheaply and offers it for parties, gatherings and other social occasions.

Megarin lives nearby with a large family of 9. They spend much of the year tending their crops and raising sheep. Two of Megarin's children, Namel and Mose, are adventerous sorts and have traveled far and wide in The Barren Wood.

They have also been to Fromkin's Pass which is the location of the only remaining bridge that crosses over The Hruesen River to the escarpment above The Black Tooth Ridge. It was so solidly built in ages past that it has withstood the ravages of man, nature and time.

As the 8 Crimson Crusaders walk up to a table to be seated outside The Swilling Swan, they can clearly hear Namel (wearing a short sword, sling and leather armor) and Mose (wearing 2 daggers, a short bow, leather armor and carrying thieves tools) boasting about having crossed over this bridge many times.

According to Namel and Mose: "It is a blocky utilitarian bridge, broad enough for 2 wagons to pass abreast. Along both sides are low stone rails. The stone is worn smooth from uncountable thousands of footsteps and wagon wheel grooves, from years of wear, scar the center of the bridge.

Statues once adorned each corner of the bridge. All but one have long since been destroyed. At the east end of the bridge is a broken and cracked statue of a large predatory bird perched atop a helmet. The giant beak and malicious eyes are stretched to the heavens as if looking for direction.

The bridge connects with a time worn, paved path on the ridge line side. This is Fromkin's Pass. The path is broad and wide and created in such a manner as to allow wagon traffic and so angles up the ridge in several switchbacks.

At each turn in the path is a small, stone, one roomed building which once housed soldiers of The Horned One. As the path nears the summit of the ridge, the top of a large crumbling tower can be seen – Fromkin's Aerie as it is locally known.

This ruined tower once had a wall and several buildings surrounding it, though all have fallen into rubble now. The tower itself has only a little of the internal and external structure left. It is entirely hollow and one section of it is completely collapsed revealing gutted and burned insides.

Except for the upper floor of the tower, only a few old and rotted beams remain. Nearly half of the uppermost floor remains while a portion of the staircase clings precariously to the wall of the tower. The ground about the tower is littered with small carcases and bones and the decayed remains of animals.

Nothing lives in or around the tower except some stirges. The stirges sometimes bring back small game for the young to suck on and the bones drop from the nest above to collect at the base of the tower.

The stirges nest in the decayed walls and rubble of the upper reaches of the tower. There are 15 stirges nesting in the tower, though at any given time 3-12 of them are gone. All of the nests are located on the wall while the remaining floor is used as a feeding area.

There are several animal carcases here as well as a kobold carcase. Unless really hungry the stirges do not attack prey as large as a human. However, should a halfling, gnome or dwarf make themselves easy targets or stand out alone, the stirges may consider them prey.

Should anyone attempt to climb the tower or threaten the stirges nesting area, they do attack. But we do not think these Crimson Crusaders seated together over here are much interested in battling stirges, as there are plenty of other mysterious crags and crevices to investigate all along the ridge."

The first berry wine of the season is brought to the 8 Crimson Crusaders in tankards as curious halflings and humans crane their necks to catch a glimpse of the legendary group that has finally arrived in Botkinburg as was spoken in prophecies aforetime.

Namel and Mose have silently removed themselves from the spotlight as Wymon Whitefoot steps forward to greet the 8 Crimson Crusaders. He reiterates the invitation to come to The Halfling Community on the other side of Bafler Hill to find hospitable accommodations and to entrust their 100 Gold Coins and any found treasures in the months following into the safekeeping of trusted halflings inside The Halfling Community.

So if you will be so kind as to accept this gift from our community ... and put the ring on the finger of your choice ... it will adjust itself to your finger and begin to attune itself to your mind and body ... and should be fully functional by next Monday!"

The 8 Crimson Crusaders receive their rings and place them upon the finger of their own personal choice, before settling in for some more First Berry Wine and the tunes of a halfling bard, providing soothing music to go along with their further conversations with Wymon Whitefoot that confirm their suspicions that Volkmar and the sheriff were either avoiding or trying to cover up the dangers to the inhabitants of Botkinburg!

While Wymon Whitefoot confirms what they have heard from the priests and the Hafners, each Crimson Crusader becomes aware of a strange sensation occurring deep within their souls and bodies!

Each Crimson Crusader is experiencing the beginning of the enhancement of their particular class abilities! Plus undergoing a positive change in each of their abilities to withstand the negative affects of damage inflicted upon them in any way shape or form!

Drogo Tulk the Fighter will become a Level 4 Fighter on Monday, May 14.

COMBAT DOMINANCE: At 4th level, the fighter gains an extra attack with any weapon when fighting opponents with 1 hit die or less. In order to use this ability, the fighter must direct all attacks in a combat round against opponents that meet these criteria.

The fighter can split the available attacks among qualified opponents as desired. This ability improves as
the fighter progresses in levels. The fighter gains an additional attack for every four levels gained after 4th level. So, at 8th level, the fighter is allowed a total of three attacks, and at 12th level, the fighter gains four attacks against these opponents.

[Upon reaching Level 4 Drogo will have 52 Hit Points instead of 39 Hit Points!]

Karvilo the Ranger will become a Level 3 Ranger on Thursday, May 10.

COMBAT MARAUDER: Rangers possess an extraordinary ability to combat their most common foes, humanoids and giants, due to intense training and study of their enemy’s fighting techniques. When fighting humanoids (bugbears, gnolls, goblins, hobgoblins, kobolds, orcs and the like) or giants (giants, ogres and the like), a ranger inflicts extra damage. This damage bonus is +1 at 1st level, with an additional +1 gained at every level beyond first. For example, a 5th level ranger would inflict an additional 5 hp of damage for each successful hit against a humanoid or giant. The use of this ability is dependent upon the armor worn. Wearing armors other than those allowed reduces the ranger’s mobility and swiftness of arm such that he cannot effectively use this ability.

TRACK (Wisdom): The ranger can successfully track any creature in a wilderness setting that leaves a discernable trace. They can also determine characteristics about the creature being tracked. With a successful wisdom check, a ranger can find and follow a creature’s tracks or trail for 5 hours. The ranger can also hide tracks at the same level of ability. When tracking or hiding tracks from humanoids or giants, a ranger receives a +2 bonus to the attribute check. The Castle Keeper may apply bonuses or
penalties for varying conditions, such as the length of time elapsed since the tracks were made, weather conditions, the number of creatures tracked and whether the tracked creature moved through water or a secret door. A successful track check may also impart information about the creature(s) being tracked.

Once a trail is found, a track check can determine the general number and type of creatures being tracked. The number of creatures tracked should be disclosed to the player by using one of the following categories: individuals (1-6), band (6-30), troop (20-100), or army (100+), and also one from the following categories: beast, fey, giant, humanoid, plant, vermin, or other (aberration, construct,
dragon, elemental, magical beast, ooze, outsider, shapechanger, or undead).

For many creatures, the ranger can not identify its exact type; only that it is a creature of such nature until some experience has been gained tracking it. A ranger can identify specific animal tracks with no effort. After having tracked a particular type of creature several times, the ranger can later identify its tracks. At 5th level, a ranger can identify the specific type of creature(s) being tracked if belonging to one of the following categories and with which the ranger has had some interaction: beast, fey, giant, humanoid, plant or vermin.

At 3rd level, a ranger can ascertain distinguishing characteristics about the creatures tracked, such as whether they are wounded, exhausted, carrying heavy objects or wearing certain armor. The ranger might even be able to determine if a spell caster is in the group being tracked. The marks or characteristics determined are limited only by the Castle Keeper’s imagination and desire to provide or enhance story elements during game play.

[Upon reaching Level 3 Karvilo will have 33 Hit Points instead of 22 Hit Points!]

Brenys the Rogue will become a Level 4 Rogue on Monday, May 14.

SNEAK ATTACK: At 4th level, a rogue has learned to adapt back attack skills to more general situations. When an opponent or victim is aware of the rogue, but unsuspecting of an attack, a rogue can use the sneak attack ability. For example, a rogue could be having a conversation with a potential victim while hiding a poisoned stiletto up his sleeve, intending to strike once a piece of vital information is learned. Or, a rogue could be perched in the shadows of a tree, waiting for the perfect opportunity
to fire a crossbow.

Unlike the back attack, sneak attack situations do not necessarily require a previously successful hide or move silently check, although the Castle Keeper could require success in one or both,
depending upon the circumstances if necessary. The opponent is not allowed to roll for initiative until the round following the attack.

A rogue making a sneak attack gains a +2 bonus to hit and a +4 bonus to damage. Ranged weapons can be used for sneak attacks if the target is within 30 feet. A rogue cannot aim with deadly accuracy from beyond that range. A sneak attack cannot be combined with back attack.

This ability is affected by wearing armor not on the rogue armor list.

[Upon reaching Level 4 Brenys will have 32 Hit Points instead of 24 Hit Points!]

Trossach the Barbarian will become a Level 3 Barbarian on Thursday, May 10.

INTIMIDATE: Barbarians offer an imposing display of ferocious raw power. They instinctively realize that victory lies in the wine-besotted, soft demeanors of their foe and that brute force works best when
combined with overwhelming terror.

Barbarians are able to project themselves as this brutal, terrifying force. Whether through sheer force of will, or savage decorum, a barbarian is able to strike fear into and intimidate his opponents. Any creature of equal or lesser hit dice of the barbarian whom fails a charisma check suffers -2 to all rolls, including but not limited to initiative, attack, damage and attribute checks. This ability takes effect as soon as the barbarian uses the ability, and it has 15 foot radius area of effect.

At 1st level, a barbarian can intimidate one creature. The number of creatures increases with level as follows: up to 2 creatures at 3rd level, up to 4 creatures at 6th level, up to 8 creatures at 10th level, and up to 16 creatures at 15th level.

[Upon reaching Level 3 Trossach will have 45 Hit Points instead of 30 Hit Points!]

Rhiannon the Monk will become a Level 3 Monk on Thursday, May 10. She will also become a Level 4 Monk on Monday, May 14

IRON BODY: A monk’s training and bodily control creates a hardiness and toughness that makes the monk more resistant than normal to harmful toxins and diseases, and to effects that control, paralyze, or kill.

At 1st level, the character gains a +1 bonus to saving throws versus disease, poison, paralysis, polymorph, petrification and death attack. The bonus increases to +2 at 3rd level, +3 at 6th level, +4 at 10th level, and +5 at 15th level.

IRON FISTS: Beginning at 3rd level, a monk has begun to master his martial ability to such an extent that his unarmed attacks strike as if dealt by a magic weapon. Thus, the monk can strike and damage creatures hit only by magic weapons.

At 3rd level, the monk’s unarmed attack is equal a +1 magic weapon. This ability improves as the monk rises in levels as follows: +2 at 5th, +3 at 8th, +4 at 12th and +5 at 17th. Note, the ability does not confer any actual bonus to hit and damage.

SLOW FALL: At 4th level, a monk’s body control allows him to slow his fall if within 10 feet of a vertical surface. By using the wall or surface, the monk breaks his fall and takes less damage than normal. The damage is reduced as if the fall were 20 feet shorter than it actually is.

As the monk progresses in levels, the damage reduction increases as follows: 25 feet at 6th level, 30 feet at 9th level, 35 feet at 13th level, and 40 feet at 18th level.

At Level 4 His Spell Casting Ability will increase to include 1 more level 1 spell and 1 more level 2 spell.

Tohmaz the Shaman will become a Level 3 Shaman on Thursday, May 10. He will also become a Level 4 Shaman on Monday, May 14

WOODLAND STRIDE: At 3rd level, druids gain the ability to move through natural thorns, briars, overgrown areas and similar terrain at normal speed and without suffering damage or other impairment. When doing so, druids leave no trail in the natural surroundings and cannot be tracked. However, thorns, briars and overgrown areas that are enchanted or magically manipulated to impede motion still affect druids.

At Level 3 His Spell Casting Ability will increase to include 1 level 2 spell, 1 bonus level 2 spell plus 1 Level 2 Special American Indian Spell.

At Level 4 His Spell Casting Ability will increase to include 1 more level 1 spell and 1 more level 2 spell.

You Still Have Time to do some Back Posting reflections on what has transpired thus far in our adventure.

Hopefully by Tuesday December 21 (Real Life Time) I will post what each PC Character has learned from the people they have talked with in Botkinburg the past 4 days (Tuesday May 8 thru Friday May 11).

You have until Friday December 17 (Real Life Time) to either send me a PM Message or post in the QnA to let me know what Areas of the Botkinburg Map your PC Character would like to explore for possible information to help in the exploration of The Black Tooth Ridge

..... in case you did not notice over in The Crimson Crusaders posts ... I have posted The Crimson Crusaders at the House of D'Amter ... plus BluddGrinn and Drogo after they receive their gifts from the Hafners!

This gift explains why we must remain in Botkinburg for 8 days and begin our journey on day 9 towards The Black Tooth Ridge!

I do realize that the Christmas season is occupying most everyone's time and attention.

Before I leave Ghana I want this adventure to have progressed far enough to get things rolling, so I am planning to go ahead and just assign where every PC Character goes, stays and stores their Gold and Treasure.

From what I have observed, the 5 men will be staying at The Halfling Community, so I am planning to have the 3 women stay at the House of Sludge.

This is so the women can bond a bit and also keep a restraint upon the Rogue from trying to rob everybody blind while staying there! I know the Monk Rhiannon might prefer to stay outside in The Halfling Community, but she also wants to find out who has attacked her and it would seem to be a good place to sort out some rumors!

Karvilo wants to visit the old man on top of the house falling into the river, Tohmaz has been asked to visit The Keep to help Clement Botkin and BluddGrinn wants to go there also as posted.

BluddGrinn will also be visiting the dwarf Butcher and our Barbarian friend (Nomad D2)did mention in one of his posts about wanting to check out the Farrier.

Drogo will be up to his neck in Halflings, but he will find time to get away and visit the Hafners again at The House of D'Amter.

If there is any particular place your character wants to go, then please speak up by Friday because I will be typing the results over the weekend.

I am planning to send the Bard and possibly the Rogue back to The Chancel to read some more script, or at least attempt to read some more.

By the way, everyone will be at Level 3 by the end of The Swilling Swan segment and the others who have already leveled up will quite possibly hit Level 4 (Rogue may end up a Level 5 before leaving Botkinburg!) by the time all the goodies are distributed from what you encounter during your stay in Botkinburg!

Subject: DROGO TULK Drogo Receives His Healing Bead

After an appropriate time of small talk, allowing Lars Hafner enough time to weigh the character and intent of the 8 Crimson Crusaders, he instructed his wife Gisela to bring the gift they had prepared for each of the Crimson Crusaders Clan members.

”Our gift to The Halfling of Legend and his unlikely band of heroes who company with him is A Single Prayer Bead that can cast one of the following 3 spells per day:

Cure Serious Wounds, Remove Blindness/Deafness or Remove Disease.

What is so special about this rare Prayer Bead is that any of these spells on a given day may only be used on yourself ... not for another.

Ironically ... each of these beads has a unique Ruby hue ... fitting for a Clan of 8 Crimson Crusaders who will openly defy the rumored Curse of the Crimson Crusaders!

You must secret your very own Prayer Bead on your person ... however you choose ... for it will take a full 8 days for your particular Prayer Bead to attune itself to harmonize with your spirit, soul and body.

This knowledge should fully answer your unspoken question as to why the Lady Marchess Fabressa informed you upon your arrival that you were to prepare yourselves to depart from Botkinburg in 9 days!

From what I have beheld of the dead, dying and wounded Gold, Emerald and Crimson Crusaders who have been brought to us over the past several months ... You Will Most Likely Have A Personal Need For Using These Prayer Beads! There Are UnKnown Dangers Lurking About The Black Tooth Ridge!”

All we ask for payment ... is that should any or all of you Crimson Crusaders be able to find your way back to Botkinburg ... Please Bring Us Some Rare Herbs … Animal Parts ... Or Similar Items!

I Would Especially Like to Have a Feather of an Oslen Owl ... a Rare Species of Fowl that Lived in The Barren Wood ... Ages Ago!”

Lars and Gisela smiled pleasantly as they handed each of the 8 Crimson Crusaders their own personal Ruby hued Prayer Bead.

Drogo Tulk of the Short Swords was a bit caught off guard that Lars Hafner and his wife Gisela would so matter-of-factly refer to him as The Halfling of Legend. These were humans, albeit human healers, who were openly referring to him by the same title that the halflings from here to the Sword Studio of Preston Tallfellow had been conferring upon him during his travels.

He wondered a bit about how his Crimson Crusaders Clan members were reacting to such information, but Drogo kept these thoughts to himself. It was more important to the Halfling Fighter that he do his part to battle against the evils they would soon be encountering.

Drogo would lead the charge against any and all opposition if that is what it would take to help defend and protect his comrades, but he was certain that if any orcs made the mistake of getting anywhere near the Crimson Crusaders Clan, that it would be the War Cleric who would be leading the charge!

As the Prayer Beads were offered to each Crimson Crusader, Drogo Tulk opened his hand to freely receive the gift that was freely given. He was certain that their lives may depend upon these beads before they ever returned to Botkinburg.

Drogo bowed and thanked the Hafners for their precious gift, making a mental note to himself that if he were able to free himself from the various members of The Halfling Community who would be certain to hound the Halfling Fighter about his being The Halfling of Legend, that he would return to The House of D'Amter to speak more freely with Lars and Gisela about their knowledge of this legend.

The Halfling Fighter looked around at the rest of the members of his Crimson Crusaders Clan and noted how they readily accepted their gift, sensing that each one knew the irony of receiving a Ruby hued Prayer Bead for their own personal healing, whenever the time would surely come to use it.

Drogo watched BluddGrinn toy with his personal Prayer Bead and noticed that the War Cleric was playing with his beard as if he were trying to decide where to place the Prayer Bead. It would certainly work for The Grim One, but Drogo needed to decide where the appropriate place on his person would be for the Prayer Bead to attune itself to his spirit, soul and body.

He did not have a beard, so that was out of the question. He could place it in his hair as a braid much like the War Cleric seemed to be deciding to do, but Drogo was not quite comfortable with the idea of wearing his personal Prayer Bead in his hair.

After much thought Drogo Tulk of the Short Swords decided that he would ask Eva Whitefoot to make him a bracelet suitable for wearing on his left wrist that would hold the Ruby hued Prayer Bead safe and secure where he could see it and call upon its healing power in time of need.

Drogo was satisfied with himself that he had made the right decision for himself in regards to wearing the Ruby hued Prayer Bead. He listened with interest as Gisela made her request to the Shaman to visit Clement Botkin and was a bit amused as BluddGrinn declared his intentions to talk to the wizard and the uncle who lost an arm to the War Cleric's most hated type of foe.

Soon it was time to leave and Drogo Tulk of the Short Swords began to inwardly brace himself for the reception that he was sure to receive from The Halfling Community, in regards to their conviction that the Halfling Fighter was The Halfling of Legend foretold of in prophecies; who would company with a band of unlikely heroes to confront the unknown evil threatening their way of life in Botkinburg.

Subject: BLUDDGRINN BluddGrinn at the Healers House

Clement Botkin defended this town when it was known as Stoneway. His Knights and Soldiers protected all who would come here to live. Later the town was renamed in his honor ... Botkinburg!

Through his wisdom and strength Clement Botkin kept folk safe here for many years. But time passed and has robbed dear Clement of both his wits ... and his son ... who died at the hands of orcs ... while exploring the unknown recesses of The Black Tooth Ridge!

His grandson Volkmar has taken charge of The Keep in his dead father's stead ... and Clement is now too old and feeble of mind and body ... moaning in pain and eating soup.

BluddGrinn the Grim thoughtfully fingered his Tome of Leadership and Influence that the young priest Maik Felder had presented to the War Cleric, as he remembered countless memories of Orcs trying to take his life on numerous occasions, plus the slayings of family and friends.

"I Hate Orcs!" muttered the War Cleric out loud as distant memories of his battles underneath the Aratock Mountains came flooding back to his consciousness as he tried in vain to suppress those tormenting memories of the losses of family members and friends.

Volkmar's attitude has angered Clement's longtime ally and friend, Aldadius Mastinfelderin, a wizard of some repute. Perhaps one of you could go to The Keep to speak with Aldadius?

Volkmar has an Uncle named Frekin ... who lost an arm long ago in battle with an orc ... who is now in charge of the soldiery at The Keep. Now he could tell you a thing or two about fighting orcs!

"Orcs!

I Can Smell The Evil Of The Orcs!

I Can Taste The Evil Of The Orcs!"

BluddGrinn fairly spat the words out of his mouth as he thought upon Volkmar's father dying at the hands of orcs somewhere in the confines of The Black Tooth Ridge and how his Uncle Frekin must have battled valiantly against the orc that cost him his arm.

"I Do Not Care Much For Volkmar!

But I Will Go To The Keep To Trade Orc War Stories With His Uncle!

Those Who Fight Orcs Are My Comrades For Life!

Perhaps While I Am At The Keep I May Speak With This Wizard Aldadius?

A Wizard Angered By Volkmar Is Certainly Worth Talking To!"

BluddGrinn toyed playfully with the Ruby hued Prayer Bead as he considered talking to the Wizard Aldadius and Uncle Frekin. It would be most gratifying to hear what either of them had to say about the things that Volkmar had spoken of earlier that afternoon, regarding his opinion of what was actually transpiring in The Barren Wood and The Black Tooth Ridge.

Smiling to himself, the War Cleric decided that he would have this Ruby hued Prayer Bead braided into his beard for safe keeping. The Tinker would have been glad to know that the people of Botkinburg were so gracious to provide such items to help these Crimson Crusaders battle against the taint of evil that was threatening to swarm upon the unsuspecting populace of The Realm of New Aenochia.

Gripping the edges of his Tome of Leadership and Influence that the young priest Maik Felder had presented to the War Cleric, BluddGrinn pushed those dark musings from his immediate attention as he made himself think of more pleasant things with which to immediately to occupy his thoughts.

The lure of locating hidden gold and other treasure began to resurface in BluddGrinn's thoughts. Nothing like going to war against the unknown evil for the lure of gold and unknown treasure!

"I Hate Orcs!

I Hate Goblins!

I Hate UnDead Foes Of All Kinds!

I Hate The Minions Of The Horned One!

But I Love Locating Gold And Battling Any Foe Who Gets In My Way Of Finding And Claiming Lost Treasure!

Should I Find Any Items Of Interest To The House Of D'Amter During My Questing ... I Shall Be Sure To Bring Them To You Friend Lars!

Thank You For This Fine Prayer Bead ... It Should Serve Me Well Against Orcs ... And Other Vermin ... Where Ever They Be Lurking!"

Previously at The House of Sludge
Tohmaz the Shaman had taken his cue from BluddGrinn the War Cleric to address the dignitaries and request a vast list of supplies to feed and provide adequate provisions for his newly found Clan of Crimson Crusaders, plus his own personal items for defending his Clan.

This Shaman would fight for his Clan, but his main focus was to make sure there was provisions aplenty for each individual Crimson Crusader, as well as the entire Clan. He awaited a response, nodded to his Clan and resumed his meal.

The Lady Marchessa Fabressa responded quickly without even batting an eye: "The Empress Pryzmira will be pleased to hear that such a gallant Clan of Crimson Crusaders are preparing for a war against the evils emanating from beyond the borders of The Realm of New Aenochia.

All these items will be granted over the next few days, plus whatever your companions may need for their personal use during your journey will be added as they submit their requests!

I am quite sure that your surprise gifts from The Chancel, The House of D'Amter and The Swilling Swan will be put to good use once you gain an understanding of their importance!"

Botkinburg 2:30pm
The House of D'Amter
Monday, May 7, 30awd (After Winter Dark)

Hermannus had instructed his assistant priest Maik Felder to escort the Crimson Crusaders Clan to The House of D'Amter (Area 6), which was a short walk between the Keller's Farm (Area 16) and the Farrier (Area 12) to a large single story wood framed house with an attached barn located just north of The House of Sludge (Area 1) and a bit east of a family of halfling woodsmen (Area 25) the Shipps.

Maik Felder freely spoke about the imminent dangers lurking about in The Barren Wood and The Black Tooth Ridge. He genuinely was concerned about the safety of the townspeople of Botkinburg and expressed his gratefulness to the 8 Crimson Crusaders for answering the Call for Crusaders from the Empress Pryzmira in defiance of the rumored Curse of the Crimson Crusaders.

As they approached The House of D'Amter, a large white mastiff dog began barking, alerting his masters that company was approaching. They could see a small smokehouse located in the back yard, along with several milk cows.

Above the front door they noticed a lintel with a carving of an owl and an inscription on it: 'With my hands, I bring life.'

Before anyone could knock on the door, an older man wearing padded armor and carrying a war hammer, stooped and bent with a long white beard and skin wrinkled and cracked with age, invited the newcomers to enter his humble abode. Maik had already informed them that this was a cleric who had devoted his entire life to healing and had never laid his hand upon anyone in violence. He did not intend to do so now, no matter what danger was threatening Botkinburg from The Barren Wood or The Black Tooth Ridge.

Maik introduced the Crimson Crusaders Clan to Lars and Gisela Hafner, devotees to a deity of healing and curing, then excused himself once he felt the new recruits were comfortable enough to be left alone with their new host and hostess, politely bowing and saying as he walked out the door:

"You may feel free to come back to The Chancel any time during your stay in Botkinburg. If you have any more questions or would like to come to pray or to meditate, then the door to The Chancel is always open to any of you Crimson Crusaders."

Once Maik had left them alone, Lars' wife Gisela offered the 8 Crimson Crusaders some herb tea and delicious roots and berries for a healthy snack. Gisela is an accomplished herbalist and knows much about curing the ill and wounded, who helps Lars with his duties.

Although their healing services are free to all who seek their aid, the Hafners are usually awarded some type of compensation such as food or herbs or a service for their labor of love to the community.

After an appropriate time of small talk, allowing Lars Hafner enough time to weigh the character and intent of the 8 Crimson Crusaders, he instructed his wife Gisela to bring the gift they had prepared for each of the Crimson Crusaders Clan members.

"Our gift to The Halfling of Legend and his unlikely band of heroes who company with him is A Single Prayer Bead that can cast one of the following 3 spells per day:

Lars and Gisela smiled pleasantly as they handed each of the 8 Crimson Crusaders their own personal Ruby hued Prayer Bead. Then his wife Gisela asked a Special Favor as she poured more tea:

"Good Shaman ... If You Find the Time ... Would You Please Go to The Keep ... To See If You Can Ease the Pain of Clement Botkin?

Clement Botkin defended this town when it was known as Stoneway. His Knights and Soldiers protected all who would come here to live. Later the town was renamed in his honor ... Botkinburg!

Through his wisdom and strength Clement Botkin kept folk safe here for many years. But time passed and has robbed dear Clement of both his wits ... and his son ... who died at the hands of orcs ... while exploring the unknown recesses of The Black Tooth Ridge!

Your Coins and Treasures will also be well guarded and quite safe in The Halfling Community ... if you would rather your valuables be stored there!

Speaking of the Halflings ... You should probably prepare yourselves to journey on over to The Swilling Swan ... for your third gift of the day!"

Lars and Gisela engage the Crimson Crusaders Clan in a bit of more pleasant conversation as they walk their guests outside to point them in the direction of The Swilling Swan (Area 20) which is not very far away for the 8 Crimson Crusaders to walk by themselves.

They also make it plain to their departing guests that they are free to stop by anytime while they are in Botkinburg to drink more herb tea and eat some healthy snacks.

NOTE FROM THE CASTLE KEEPER
Please be sure to post at the QnA what Areas your PC Character will be exploring to talk to the people in Botkinburg, if you have not already done so or contacted me personally.

I also need to know if your PC Character will be staying at The Bent Hook or in The Halfling Community?

Also where your PC Character intends to have his or her Gold Coins and Treasures stored during the course of this adventure?

You Still Have Time to do some Back Posting reflections on what has occured thus far upon your arrival in Botkinburg.

In a few days I will post what transpires at The Swilling Swan.

Gandalf the Smooth already informed me that he plans to send his Ranger Karvilo the Unseen to visit Grunalf Horfane

Area 18. Fisherman
The house of Grunald Horfane hangs halfway into the water. He has a boat attached to his windowsill and spends most of his time on his front porch, the only part still out of the water. The house was built some time ago on the side of a steep hill on the banks of the Hruesen River. Over time it has slowly slid halfway into the water. Oblivious to the eventual collapse of his house, Grunald continues living here, often fishing from atop his roof.

Area 1. The Bent Hook or Ortolf's House of Sludge
The Bent Hook, locally known as Ortolf's House of Sludge, is the only tavern in Botkinburg owned (but not operated) by Ortolf Heimpel. His sons and daughters, their spouses and children manage the establishment while Ortolf entertains guests and townspeople as he consumes ale and mutton.

The Bent Hook serves as the community's gathering place and Town Hall. The main building is a large, square two story establishment with a stone facing on the lower floor and wooden plank facing for the upper floor.

The roof is made of red slate and steeply pitched to accommodate heavy snows during winter and has a cluster of chimneys and heating pipes poking out of it. The rear of the Bent Hook has a single floored wood planked rear attachment that houses the kitchen and storerooms. Behind the tavern is a large yard, enclosed by a stout stone wall and fence, with a barn and stables at one end and the Heimpel's house at the other.

The door to the common room is almost always open. The room is spacious though the paneling of the interior is so darkly stained from years of collected smoke and grime that it is dark and, without the glow of friendly fires, lanterns or candles, can be brooding or oppressive.

Aside from the large table in the center of the room, there are many other tables and chairs of all shapes and sizes haphazardly scattered about the room and two large stone faced fireplaces at either end of the room. A staircase leads up to the second floor of the establishment while two large oaken doors open on to the brewery and the kitchen beyond.

The second floor is a series of rooms for let. The largest is a common room where several coppers gives one a place to sleep on the floor for the evening. There are 6 other rooms for let at 1sp at night, each essentially the same. These rooms contain four large oak beds that nearly fill up the entire space, a single table and one trunk. A bucket, towel and pan of water is provided for guests to relieve or refresh themselves during the night and are set outside the door to be disposed of by one of the servers.

The Bent Hook is also known as Ortolf's House of Sludge, due to the dark brown, near black brew officially called Kaiseren Bock or the Kings Brew. Its dark and vicious nature eventually became known as River Sludge or just Sludge.

The food served consists mainly of the take from the river which is served fried, broiled, boiled, stewed, grilled and even raw. Meats like cattle and poultry are more expensive. Locally grown vegetables such as potatoes, carrots, spinach, cabbage and legume such as pinto beans, lima beans and red beans augment those meals.

A full meal costs as little as 1sp. Soups and breads are cheaper while more elaborate meals can cost 1gp. The beer is cheap, costing 5cp a tankard.

The common room is almost full and a few guests are staying at The Bent Hook and talk of the strange happenings on the outskirts of town are often exaggerated, although goblin raiders and other more horrid creatures have been seen stealing cattle and pigs.

Some people as well as the Gold and Emerald Crusaders have gone missing in the past few months and there is talk of the return of the Wood Witch who haunts the area with her evil magics deep in The Barren Wood.

The Curse of the Crimson Crusaders is foremost in everyone's minds of late and the people fear that the curse will come upon them if the Crimson Crusaders remain in town for much more than 2 or 3 weeks at a time, but conversely the people are convinced that a blessing upon them will be invoked if they aid or help any Crimson Crusader at any time.

Area 2. The Keep
The Keep is an impressive large square tower with a bartizan (turret for defense) at each corner of the roof. The tower is made entirely of stone and has three floors and a cellar beneath it. It is about 50 feet tall at the roof's peak.

The Botkin family banner, purple over red with eagle claws, tops the keep and is visible for miles around. There is one entry to the Keep on its west side and facing the river. The large oaken doors to the Keep have a smaller inset door that is usually open and guarded by several men-at-arms.

The Keep houses the Botkin family and all their retainers, including Volkmar Botkin and his grandfather Clement. The Lady Marchessa Fabressa and her retainers, including her consort Gideon when he is in Botkinburg, are guests at The Keep because of the social and political importance of entertaining one of the highest ranking emissaries of the Empress Pryzmira.

Area 3. The Chancel
This is a temple where the many gods, whom the locals worships, are paid homage to. It is a large wooden structure with several floors and two tall, thin towers rising from its center. Most of the inhabitants have helped construct one portion or another of this temple, and the town considers it, collectively, their own. The Chancel is overseen by Hermannus Tersteeg and his followers.

Area 4. The Oak Grove and Shrine

Area 5. Tinker's Caravan
The area at the base of the hill on the Oak Grove is used as the town market or gathering place for festivals. There are 3 wagons drawn up and several families of tinkers are here now. They travel far and wide through the region and collect and sell all manner of items.

Area 6. House of D'Amter
This is the home of Lars and Gisela Haffner, devotees to the deity of healing and curing. They live in a large single story wood framed house with an attached barn. Above the front door is a lintel with a carving of an owl and an inscription on it, 'With my hands, I bring life.' A small smokehouse is located in their backyard along with several milk cows. Their dog, a large white mastiff, lingers in front of the house and barks loudly when anyone approaches.

Area 7. Butcher
Tirten Shodfoot is the only dwarf of permanent residence in Botkinburg. Long ostracized from his kin in the Aneer'rafe Hills for theft, he came to Botkinburg to avoid contact with other dwarves. In this, he has been fairly successful. He took up butchery. He is of very ill temperament, treating other dwarves especially poorly but performs his tasks dutifully and with great professionalism yet with grumbles and complaints all the while.

Area 8. Two Story Farmhouse
This is the home of the Schuler's. Fritz and his wife Lisa live here with their 6 children, all of whom are under the age of 15. Fritz has a large two story, wood framed house and barn. The family lives on the upper floor with the lower floor acting as a barn. Fritz is an affable person but his wife is more like a shrew, constantly complaining about Fritz's laziness.

Area 9. Farm House
A dairy farmer lives here. He and his only son spend much time hunting for food while the wife spends most of her time tending to the few cows they have.

Area 10. Old Man Nester's
Nester is one of the few remaining inhabitants of Botkinburg who can remember when the town was first being settled. He is in his late 90s and usually sits on the front porch of his house whittling away at a stick. He is still spry enough to tend his chickens and gather some food but mostly his neighbors care for him, insuring he is well fed and has enough fire wood during the winter. If Nester is not on his front porch or in his house, he is likely at the Chancel praying, resting or chatting with Hermannus or at the Bent Hook drinking Sludge.

Area 11. Sheriff
This is the office of the sheriff and jail. It is a small wooden structure with several cells along its backside. The current sheriff, Aaron von Bedering spends most of the day here but lives on the outskirts of the town.

Area 12. Farrier
Greden Merkmen hunts the entire range of the Hruesen River looking for beaver, fox or other animals whose hide brings a fair value in Ludensheim or Botkinburg. He is a quiet man and keeps to himself and as such, has earned the distrust of his neighbors and fellow townspeople.

Area 13. Blacksmith
Darmek Veldenman is a general purpose blacksmith and not highly trained in weapons making or armor repair. He can do general repairs on weapons and armor. He is also capable of making all manner of other goods commonly found in farming communities though.

Area 14. Woodsmen
This rambling house and series of sheds belong to 6 brothers who are carpenters and woodsmen. They are a jovial lot who drink too much and work too little. None of them farm and only exchange firewood, cut wood and services for food or other needs. They are often found at Ortolf's House of Sludge drinking long into the evening.

Area 15. Farmer
This family spends most of their time working the garden in the rear of their house and tending several milk cows. They have been here for several generations. The father is not fond of strangers and tries not to have dealings with them. His son and daughter both work in The Keep as cooks part of each day.

The head of the household, Mertin von Stock, is rumored to have a secret past as he is getting on in years and occasionally hints at his secret past. His wife died after the birth of their second child.

Area 16. Farmer
This narrow two story building is home to a friendly and affable family of 10. Well fed, the Keller's have several dozen dairy cows. Much of their time is spent milking the cows and preparing cheeses which they sell locally and send to markets in larger cities once every 3 months. Lately the roads have become unsafe and journeys often postponed or abandoned.

Area 17. Fisher
This fisherman lives with his 2 surviving daughters. He rarely fishes and spends most of his time at the bar drinking away his daughters' catch. The daughters, Gisella and Nina, are very familiar with the river and truly dislike their father.

Area 18.

Area 19. Boat Ramp
This was once a wooden bridge, whose remnants jut out into the river about 15 feet. Many of the fishermen gather here in the morning and afternoon before and after fishing. They discuss the days catch, mend nets and sell fish.

Bafler Hill, The Halfling Quarter
Area 20. The Swilling Swan

Megarin lives nearby with a large family of 9. They spend much of the year tending their crops and raising sheep.

Area 21. Carpenter
This is the home of the halfling Befren Needlemire, a carpenter by trade and farmer by necessity.

Area 22. Farmer
Edward Hale raises a few cattle but mostly tends to a large variety of crops in an expansive garden. He has a family of 8 and lives in a two story wood framed farmhouse. Part of the first floor is reserved for a barn.

Area 23. Fisher
This halfling family lives in a small burrow located on top of the hill. Their home is warm and cozy, filled with old furniture and many rugs and carpets. Mrs. Mar Eldon runs the household. Her husband drowned in the river some years ago, a happenstance she talks about constantly, particularly at The Swilling Swan where she spends a good deal of time tipping back mugs of brew.

Area 24. Farmer
Another of the halfling farm families in town and an exception to the general industriousness of that community. This man, Barstow Frizzyfoot, has many children and a large wife whom he calls “BT” but Barstow has never revealed what the initials stand for, though he is often found in The Swilling Swan drinking brew and laughing to himself, all the while muttering “BT” over and over again.

Area 25. Farmer
This family of halfling woodsmen, the Shipps, live in a one story building near the other burrows. They spend much of their time in the woods cutting and hauling wood. They also have a sawmill near their house where they cut and prepare wood for sale and make barrels and boxes as well as furniture and other objects.

Area 26. The Gold Crusaders Barracks
Recently built barracks located in the northwest area of town next to the Hruesen River that holds up to 100 Gold Crusaders who are commissioned to protect Botkinburg. Groups of various sizes are daily and nightly patrolling the north, east, west and south borders of the town and have been sent across the river to the Black Tooth Ridge areas on occasion, as well as into the Barren Wood. Most of the weapons and armor that have been shipped on the 3 river boats are stored and distributed from these barracks.

Area 27. The Halfling Community
A rather new community on the west side of Baffler Hill and below ground, protected by a hedge of thorns 10 feet high and 10 feet thick where most of the halflings have been gathering and preparing for an expected war against the taint encroaching the land from the Black Tooth Ridge and beyond. No one really knows how well fortified this community has become, as Wymon Whitefoot has sent messengers to gather weapons, a few magic items and recruit halfling fighters for the expected war.

Botkinburg 2pm
The Chancel
Monday, May 7, 30awd (After Winter Dark)

Drogo Tulk of the Short Swords stepped forward and bowed to the War Cleric, then offered his solemn pledge of service no matter what dangers the 8 Crimson Crusaders would face in the near future:

"I Swear Upon These Twin Short Swords That Serve To Worship My Deity Preston Tallfellow ... And I Solemnly Swear Upon My Love For Eva Whitefoot ... That I Will Do Battle Against Any And All Of Your Hated Foes ... And Help You Bring Back All The Gold And Hidden Treasure That We Can Possibly Carry ... In Defense Of The People Of Botkinburg ... And The Realm Of New Aenochia ... I Will Fight With All My Might And Strength Alongsid... My Crimson Crusaders Clan!"

The Halfling Fighter had fairly shouted his pledge to BluddGrinn the Grim, his intention being for one and all of his Crimson Crusaders Clan members to know his heart and determination, that in spite of his size Drogo would stand far taller in the face of unknown danger than any may think possible!

Drogo Tulk of the Short Swords was feeling a bit light headed as he sat back down on a bench to listen to his Crimson Crusaders Clan members react and discuss the revelations in the parchment scripts that Brenys and Shayleigh had deciphered.

Something strange was happening on the inside of him, something that he had not experienced in quite a long time! He was experiencing the beginning of an enhancement of his Fighter abilities; plus he was slowly undergoing a positive change in his ability to withstand the negative affects of damage inflicted upon him in any way, shape or form.

In 3 days Drogo Tulk of the Short Swords would be totally transformed into a Level 3 Fighter!

[Upon reaching Level 3 Drogo will have 39 Hit Points instead of 26 Hit Points!]

Subject: DROGO TULK Drogo Understands the Danger

"We priests have seen roving bands of goblins wearing Red Skull Caps lurking across The Hruesen River. We have also seen glimpses of other more ominous creatures lurking about the river bank.

Farmers have definitely been plagued with the mysterious loss of their cattle and that Ogre named Kruggle has been sighted numerous times stealing pigs and fighting with those Red Caps.

I am also convinced that those missing maidens were abducted against their will. They did not run off with any handsome treasure seekers! They were kidnapped by some unknown menace and carried off into the dark confines of The Black Tooth Ridge! Fishermen have also vanished from time to time.

The Curse of the Crimson Crusaders has been perpetuated so that other adventurers will sign on with the Gold Crusaders to help protect the borders of Botkinburg, or sign on with the Emerald Crusaders to protect Botkinburg from the mysterious evils emanating from the depths of The Barren Wood.

Both the Gold and Emerald Crusaders have been killed on both sides of the river. Gideon, the amorous consort of the Lady Marchessa Fabressa, decided that the Emerald Crusaders were to patrol The Barren Wood and the Gold Crusaders were to protect Botkinburg to the north, south, east and west.

I think most of those Gold Crusaders have lost their lives fighting some unknown evil across the river in the hidden recesses of The Black Tooth Ridge, rather than disappearing to seek hidden treasures for themselves. Volkmar and the sheriff keep saying they have abandoned their posts to seek treasures.

It has also been said that the Emerald Crusaders are encountering some unknown assailants deep in The Barren Wood. Emerald Crusaders have also been disappearing and some of the survivors have reported that bolts and arrows bearing the Black Lightning insignias on their shafts have been found numerous times with evidence of a surprise attack here and there in The Barren Wood.

Again it is Volkmar and the sheriff who spread the news that the Emerald Crusaders are deserting their posts to hunt hidden treasure in The Barren Wood and the regions beyond the borders of The Realm of New Aenochia.

It must be obvious to the 8 of you Crimson Crusaders that Volkmar and the sheriff have completely ignored what happened to you and the other river boats last night when all 3 river boats were suddenly attacked by the bolts and arrows sporting the Black Lightning insignias.

But the Lady Marchessa Fabressa, Wymon Whitefoot and myself chose to refrain from arguing this point with Volkmar and the sheriff, because we understand that the unknown threats are most real, rather than imagined.

Years ago, I fought some hideous creatures roaming around The Barren Wood and The Black Tooth Ridge, but nowadays I must leave such things to younger and better equipped adventurers, such as you 8 Crimson Crusaders.

The Halfling Community has been expecting a group of unlikely heroes in the company of what they call The Halfling of Legend, but I will let you find that out for yourselves when you meet some of them over at The Swilling Swan later today.

This much I will say, we are also convinced that you 8 Crimson Crusaders are far different from those previous ranks of Crimson Crusaders, so we temple priests have a particular gift for each of you that I have been guarding until such an unlikely group of heroes would ever venture to Botkinburg."

Drogo Tulk of the Short Swords was glad to hear the ring of truth in his tone of voice as Hermannus contradicted the reports the 8 Crimson Crusaders had received from Volkmar Botkin and the sheriff.

What the veteran priest had to say to them made more sense to the young Halfling Fighter than what he had heard explained at The House of Sludge. The threat of the goblin raiders known as the Red Caps made much more sense to Drogo, especially in the light of the message that Eva Whitefoot had sent to her cousin months ago at the Sword Studio of Preston Tallfellow.

The priest having witnessed with his own eyes mysterious creatures across the river and the Ogre named Kruggle reportedly stealing pigs and fighting the Red Caps in plain view of various town folk was all that Drogo needed to hear to know that the dangers were quite real outside Botkinburg.

What the priest had to say about the missing maidens confirmed to Drogo's heart of hearts that the evil dangers in the shadow of The Black Tooth Ridge and deep within The Barren Wood could no longer be ignored. Fisherman going missing over a period of time was reason enough for alarm and motivation enough to prepare for battle against the unknown evils encroaching upon the borders of The Realm.

Perpetuating the Curse of the Crimson Crusaders also made sense to Drogo Tulk of the Short Swords. Especially since Botkinburg was a prime target for invading armies seeking to sweep down across the lands of New Aenochia to the south and west. It was imperative that troops of adventurers be recruited to stand against the unknown evils and protect the northern borders of The Realm of New Aenochia.

The most overwhelming evidence of a great threat was the bolts and arrows marked with the Black Lighning Bolt insignias. Volkmar and the sheriff had completely ignored the fact that the 3 river boats had been attacked the night before. Now this priest was truthfully speaking that the Gold and Emerald Crusaders were losing their lives at a far greater rate than anyone seemed to be acknowledging, shifting the focus upon this so-called Curse of the Crimson Crusaders!

It was understandable why the Lady Marchessa Fabressa, Wymon Whitefoot and this Chancel Priest had held their tongues while Volkmar and the sheriff pontificated their ignorance about the real dangers surrounding Botkinburg from both The Barren Wood and The Black Tooth Ridge.

What really caught Drogo's attention was the fact that this priest Hermannus had fought a multitude of hideous creatures years ago, both in The Barren Wood and The Black Tooth Ridge, but was now relying upon much younger adventurers to venture forth and confront the evils stalking the land.

If there had been numerous hideous creatures to fight years ago, then how many more had multiplied in the ranks of the minions of The Horned One since that time?

More remarkable was the fact that this Hermannus also believed the tales of The Halfling of Legend and that he had made preparations for such a day as when a group of unlikely heroes in the company of a Halfling Fighter would find their way to Botkinburg.

Such a revelation as this from a human who had fought the evil minions of The Horned One that were lurking outside Botkinburg years ago, flooded Drogo Tulk's mind and emotions with a Greater Understanding of the Dangers building up beyond the borders of Botkinburg in recent weeks!

"Before you leave to receive your gift at the House of D'Amter, there are a couple of parchments that you may find of interest before embarking upon your quest. They have been in my possession for a number of years, but they obviously date back to the early years of the Winter Dark.

I have been searching scrolls and parchments in my private study to determine the fate of Botkinburg and the surrounding borders of The Realm of New Aenochia; however, no satisfactory insight or answers have been forthcoming from my efforts. Perhaps you 8 Crimson Crusaders will be able to discover something in your investigation of The Black Tooth Ridge that may shed further light upon my seeking?"

Drogo thumbed through the pages of his newly given gift from The Chancel priests, a Manual of Bodily Health, that Drogo knew in his heart of hearts would be invaluable in helping him to confront the evils lurking beyond the borders of Botkinburg. He would begin reading this book on the morrow and be diligent to finish it within 6 days!

Now the revelations brought forth from the parchments deciphered by Brenys and Shayleigh made it plainer than plain the unknown dangers were possibly quite worse than any of the 8 Crimson Crusaders had imagined. Except for maybe the War Cleric. BluddGrinn certainly knew the possible dangers!

BluddGrinn merely nodded to Shayleigh Bran and turned towards his other Crimson Crusader comrades who seemed to be awaiting a response from the young War Cleric.

"I Hate Orcs!

I Hate Goblins!

I Hate UnDead Foes Of All Kinds!

I Hate The Minions Of The Horned One!

But I Love Locating Gold And Battling Any Foe Who Gets In My Way Of Finding And Claiming Lost Treasure!"

Drogo Tulk had heard more than enough to realize and understand the gravity of the dangers that were now threatening the inhabitants of Botkinburg from deep within The Barren Wood and especially from across The Hruesen River in the hidden crags and crevices of The Black Tooth Ridge!

The Halfling Fighter was glad that BluddGrinn the Grim was stout hearted and eager to confront whatever unknown evil dangers came between the adventurers and any lost gold and hidden treasure!

I Will Fight With All My Might And Strength Alongside My Crimson Crusaders Clan!"

Subject: BLUDDGRINN BluddGrinn Responds to the Parchments

Yan the Ruling Priest of Light soon discovered the minions of The Horned One were tunneling underneath the Aratock Mountain range to carry their destruction to the southern lands.

Orcs, goblins and other despicable vermin threatened to overrun the lands that were once fertile with vitality. Only Yan the Ruling Priest of Light was powerful enough to raise an army to confront them.

BluddGrinn the Grim thoughtfully fingered his Tome of Leadership and Influence that the young priest Maik Felder had presented to the War Cleric, as Brenys deciphered the script of the parchment that Hermannus had presented to the young Bard.

"I Hate Orcs!" muttered the War Cleric out loud as distant memories of his battles underneath the Aratock Mountains came flooding back to his consciousness as Brenys continued deciphering the script written on the parchment.

Because the influence of Yan was so far reaching, an army was raised to prevent the minions of The Horned One from pushing further into the territories ruled by Yan It was Yan himself who led the army against the minions of The Horned One, but they were never seen or heard from again.

Fortunately the free lands of Yan remained free from the minions of The Horned One. A small price to pay for the disappearance of our ruler Yan and his followers!

"Orcs!

I Can Smell The Evil Of The Orcs!

I Can Taste The Evil Of The Orcs!"

BluddGrinn fairly spat the words out of his mouth as Brenys concluded her deciphering of the parchment script. The parchment seemed to be tainted with the very evil of Orcs as Brenys deciphered the script. It spoke of the origins of BluddGrinn's grim beginnings under the Aratock Mountains.

Gripping the edges of his Tome of Leadership and Influence that the young priest Maik Felder had presented to the War Cleric, BluddGrinn pushed those dark memories from his immediate attention as Shayleigh the Bard stepped forward to decipher the script of the parchment presented to her.

Shayleigh stepped forward and made the comment that her parchment would be of especial interest to the War Cleric and quite possibly all 8 Crimson Crusaders as she began to decipher the second script:

During the long years of The Winter Dark Wars one lone secret shrine to Steel the Dwarven God of War stood in opposition to the minions of The Horned One where none else existed.

For close to 500 years the Steel Shrine of the Dwarven God of War stood in hidden opposition to The Horned One from somewhere within the seclusion of The Black Tooth Ridge.

Waging a relentless war against the minions of The Horned One, this secluded Steel Shrine was a haven for War Clerics to lead the various Dwarf Clans into battle against orcs, goblins and a variety of other vermin serving The Horned One.

The spies of The Horned One finally located the secluded secret Steel Shrine and waged their own war against the War Clerics and their Dwarf Clan followers. For a period of 10 years the Dwarf Shrine was under siege by the macabre minions of The Horned One, until the ranks of the War Clerics were slowly decimated without reinforcements, cut off from other Dwarf Clans, who must also be under seige.

After the last War Cleric led a group of followers to counter attack the minions of The Horned One, an ancient holy artifact appeared in our sacred temple. Steel's Axe mysteriously appeared on one of the altars of Steel's Shrine, but no one here is able to lift it.

This plea is being sent forth by one of our most trusted miner couriers, in hopes that another War Cleric may be found who will heed our summons and locate the remnants of our sacred temple, to help rid this land of the taint of evil brought upon us by the vile minions of The Horned One.

Shayleigh turned to face BluddGrinn with her own grim visage, informing the War Cleric that as best as she could determine from the parchment, that the plea may have been sent out long before the War Cleric had been born.

She also informed BluddGrinn that she could find no clues as to the whereabouts of the secret location of the Steel Shrine that had been under seige.

BluddGrinn weighed the words of Shayleigh as she deciphered the script of the parchment that had been presented to her by Hermannus. He wished he had been there to fight for his kinsmen. But he had been born too late to be able to receive such a message while they yet drew breath against their enemy.

If he had only been there to wield the holy artifact. The Tinker had told him of such things appearing to the War Clerics who were found worthy to wield the weapons that Steel himself carried into battle in behalf of the Dwarf Clans over the past centuries.

But neither The Tinker nor BluddGrinn had ever beheld such a holy artifact to hold in their own hands. The Tinker may have seen Steel in battle a time or two, but there were many things that the elderly War Cleric had not chosen to discuss with the young War Cleric.

Instead, it was in the art of war that The Tinker had spent most of his time disciplining his young charge. BluddGrinn was thankful for those times with his mentor. The young War Cleric had become most familiar with the weapons of war that The Tinker taught him to use in various ways. BluddGrinn would be able to rely on his training, rather than the dream of a holy artifact he may never see in his lifetime or during the duress of battle against his hated foes or worse!

The young War Cleric studied the grim features of Shayleigh Bran as she stared him in the face, noting that she seemed to be holding something back from him. Perhaps she had her own thoughts of where this lost Steel Shrine was located, but BluddGrinn decided that there would be plenty of time in the days ahead for Shayleigh Bran to share her thoughts with the young War Cleric, if she chose to do so.

He could not allow himself the luxury of exploring The Black Tooth Ridge merely to locate a Steel Shrine that had apparently fallen to the minions of The Horned One long before BluddGrinn had been born into the family of a dwarf miner and his wife. His parents had died by the vicious blades of orcs while defending their young son BluddGrinn from the same fate!

There was a duty to be performed and BluddGrinn was determined to do as the Lady Marchessa Fabressa had asked the 8 Crimson Crusaders to do. Penetrate the unknown crags and crevices of The Black Tooth Ridge and exterminate with extreme prejudice any and all evil vermin they encountered.

Not to mention locating the Ogre named Kruggle and trying to persuade him to fight against the Red Caps to defend Botkinburg from further raids, at the expense of countless pigs to feed the hungry Ogre, or exterminating Kruggle for the safety of Botkinburg if the Ogre could not be persuaded.

BluddGrinn had not decided which of those choices were more appealing, but the young War Cleric was certain that his blades would be bloodied enough in the not too distant future, judging from the taint of evil wafting in the wind from The Black Tooth Ridge.

The lure of locating hidden gold and other treasure did captivate BluddGrinn's thoughts. Nothing like going to war against the unknown evil for the lure of gold and unknown treasure!

Perhaps locating those hidden treasures would lead the 8 Crimson Crusaders to locate the lost Steel Shrine? There was bound to be hordes of treasure to be found in the ruins of an old Steel Shrine!

Subject: CASTLE KEEPER Crimson Crusaders at The Chancel

Botkinburg 1pm
The Chancel
Monday, May 7, 30awd (After Winter Dark)

After excusing themselves to go attend to other daily business, each of the dignitaries went their separate ways, leaving Hermannus Tersteeg to escort the 8 Crimson Crusaders to The Chancel.

It was a short walk to The Chancel, not very conducive to the type of conversation that the adventurers were wont to engage the plump, bearded, middle aged priest to ply him further with the questions that had arisen while they dined at the House of Sludge.

Hermannus waved to the Kellers as the family of 10 were milking the dozens of dairy cows that helped supply Botkinburg with dairy products and fine cheeses. Hermannus explained that the family had cut back on their exporting to other cities, due to the dark rumors and strange circumstances that had befallen the inhabitants of Botkinburg, but he would explain no further until they were safely inside The Chancel and away from anyone who might overhear his unpopular remarks.

As the large wooden structure came into view, complete with several floors and 2 tall thin towers, the senior priest explained that all the townsfolk had helped to construct the temple, so it was a place of worship for any and all deities the individual towns people chose to worship.

Once inside, Hermannus apologized for not having a whole lot of time to spend entertaining the 8 Crimson Crusaders, mainly because they were also expected to go to The House of D'Amter and to The Swilling Swan after receiving their special gift from The Chancel priests to help defend Botkinburg.

However, he did take the time to address the questions raised at The House of Sludge. He explained that the townspeople were indeed free to roam about The Barren Wood as well as The Hruesen River. They were also free to explore The Black Tooth Ridge and hunt for treasure if they chose to do so.

But the further assessment of Volkmar Botkin was brought under severe criticism by the veteran priest. He was quick to point out that most of the towns folk would come to The Chancel to pray and petition their deities for protection. Some of the farmers even left offerings for The Fey who were known to live in The Barren Wood.

"We priests have seen roving bands of goblins wearing Red Skull Caps lurking across The Hruesen River. We have also seen glimpses of other more ominous creatures lurking about the river bank.

Hermannus declared all these things to the 8 Crimson Crusaders in a large worship hall filled with benches and mats. There were no decorations to speak of other than the semi elaborate candles and candle holders spread around the perimeter of the room. Simple trappings for simple folk.

Moments later Hermannus called for his assistant priests to bring their gifts to the 8 Crimson Crusaders. There was a sound of footsteps from upstairs and Hermannus disappeared for a few minutes to bring what he too had to offer as assistance to the selected Crimson Crusaders.

Introductions with the 3 young priests were swift, but courteous, as Dionijs (wearing a scale shirt, shield, mace and spear); Bertis (wearing padded armor, shield and mace) and Maik Felder (wearing ringmail, large shield and footman's flail) presented a gift to each of 2 of the Crimson Crusaders.

Dionijs presented Karvilo and Trossach each with a Manual of Quickness of Action; Bertis presented Tohmaz and Rhiannon with a Tome of Leadership and Influence and a Manual of Gainful Exercise respectively.

Maik Felder presented Drogo Tulk and BluddGrinn a Manual of Bodily Health and a Tome of Leadership and Influence respectively; while Hermannus presented Brenys and Shayleigh a Tome of Leadership and Influence and a Manual of Quickness of Action respectively.

The 4 priests explain that each of the Tomes or Manuals will enhance a particular ability after the book has been read over a total period of 48 hours during a minimum of 6 days. Each of the priests advises the particular recipients to spend the first 8 hours of their day for the next 6 days beginning on Tuesday, May 8 reading their particular book to enhance themselves, giving them 2 days to adjust to their new enhancements before leaving Botkinburg to investigate the unknown in The Black Tooth Ridge.

The 3 young priests also verify to each of their 2 charges that the things Hermannus has spoken to them about the mysterious goings on across the river in the shadows of The Black Tooth Ridge and deep within the recesses of The Barren Wood are more real than they are imagined in spite of what others in Botkinburg would claim.

Hermannus hands a small parchment to Brenys for her to decipher the script and another comparable parchment to Shayleigh for her to do the same. First the Rogue and then the Bard decipher the scripts for all to hear:

Brenys
Yan the Ruling Priest of Light soon discovered the minions of The Horned One were tunneling underneath the Aratock Mountain range to carry their destruction to the southern lands.

Orcs, goblins and other despicable vermin threatened to overrun the lands that were once fertile with vitality. Only Yan the Ruling Priest of Light was powerful enough to raise an army to confront them.

This same Yan who discovered that a full year followed a 360 degree circle consisting of 360 days, equating to 30 days each month for 12 full months or a complete 360 degree circle.

Janrulla-Yan, Februlla-Yan, Marchulla-Yan, Apprulla-Yan, Mayulla-Yan, Junulla-Yan, Jululla-Yan, Augulla-Yan, Septembrulla-Yan, Octobrulla-Yan, Novembrulla-Yan and Decembrulla-Yan were the 30 days of each month of Yan during the 360 degree cycle of a year.

Yan also determined the cycles of the moon fell upon the same days of each month as follows: Full Moon days 5-9; 3 Quarter Moon days 10-14; Half Moon days 15-19; 1 Quarter Moon days 20-24; Half Moon days 25-29 and 3 Quarter Moon days 30-4 by his royal decree.

This was the earliest account that any of the 8 Crimson Crusaders had ever heard for explaining the 30 days of the 12 months of January, February, March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October, November and December as they were now known in The Realm of New Aenochia.

BluddGrinn the Grim found this account of a tunnel underneath the Aratock Mountains especially noteworthy, for he had spent much of his young life battling those minions of The Horned One in the catacombs beneath those very mountains.

Shayleigh stepped forward and made the comment that her parchment would be of especial interest to the War Cleric and quite possibly all 8 Crimson Crusaders as she began to decipher the second script:

Shayleigh

For a period of 10 years the Dwarf Shrine was under seige by the macabre minions of The Horned One, until the ranks of the War Clerics were slowly decimated without reinforcements, cut off from other Dwarf Clans, who must also be under seige.

But the Bard was almost certain in her own heart that the secluded Steel Shrine was hidden somewhere in the confines of The Black Tooth Ridge, not far from Botkinburg in relation to the Aratock Mountains much further away, at a strategic location where the now dead War Clerics had an advantage to wage war against the minions of The Horned One, in an effort to siphon away their forces that threatened to tunnel their way underneath the Aratock Mountains for a secret invasion into the lands to the south.

These ancient parchments were proof enough to the 8 Crimson Crusaders that a very real menace was still stalking both the surface above and the hidden crevices and fissures beneath The Black Tooth Ridge.

Topic: The Crimson Crusaders
Subject: BLUDDGRINN BluddGrinn and the Shaman

While the seven other Crusaders were still gathered Tohmas stretched out his arm and addressed them.

“Thank you, for allowing me to aide you, I had come on the crusade to help restore the lands that have been defiled by the dark creatures that drove out my ancestors.

I believed I would never have a clan to serve and would only try to do the will of my Goddess to heal her lands and creatures.

As you have come together to help each other I now believe I see the truth of my Training.

When a member of my people chooses the way of the Shaman they are taught to lead, but not to command.

We are not battle commanders, but loyal followers that hold up those around us.
We are taught to help calm the chaos so that the way can be followed.
We are taught to advise, to heal, to comfort, to provide and to defend our clan.
We are taught to do this with the joy in our heart that comes from unselfish service.

So if you shall have me, I pledge myself to this clan of eight.

BluddGrinn was glad to hear the Shaman Tohmaz speak up about the 8 Crimson Crusaders bonding together as a clan. It was a good thing to belong to a group that was more than a group. Family is important, whether it be by blood or choice or unexpected circumstances.

The War Cleric had a history of his family being torn from him. First his parents, then his children and his wife. Over the years he grew close to his comrades while fighting the orcs and other minions of The Horned One underneath the Aratock Mountains.

Some of those comrades had died and others had gone their separate ways to either fight another foe, defend another people, or they had merely tired of the wars and battles and longed to find a place of solitude and peace where they could once again mine the earth for her precious treasures.

BluddGrinn the Grim had chosen to continue fighting and pressing deeper into the underground caverns beneath the Aratock Mountains. He had nothing or no one to live for, except the memories of what could have been, so he chose to fight on so that others could return to the foothills and resume their way of life as it had been long years before the great battles.

The Tinker had become the closest to family that BluddGrinn could call his own, providing him a much needed father figure and someone to teach him the ways of war in worship to Steel the Dwarven God of War. BluddGrinn knew in his heart of hearts that if The Tinker had not come into his life when he did, then he would not have survived much longer as he had become more reckless in his pursuit of the minions of The Horned One deep beneath the Aratock Mountains.

Now he was without The Tinker, knowing that his mentor had chosen to live out the rest of his days in peace and solitude, to find his final resting place in some secluded cavern deep beneath the Aratock Mountains. His mentor did not want BluddGrinn to spend his time taking care of an old dwarf who was slowly dying, but rather would have the young War Cleric find a group of people on the surface world to fight alongside and rid the surface world of the taint of The Horned One that was slowly but surely stretching its influence towards The Realm of New Aenochia.

The Tinker had spent considerable time teaching and instructing BluddGrinn by various examples from his own life the merits of fighting alongside others not of his own race and origins. The young War Cleric would have to find his own way upon the surface world, because his experiences deep underground would prove to be invaluable to those who Steel would lead him to join with.

Forming a new clan was now a welcome thought to BluddGrinn. The Halfling Fighter Drogo Tulk was good company and obvious to the War Cleric that his twin short swords would prove to be a valuable asset when carrying the battle against the minions of The Horned One into the crags and crevices of The Black Tooth Ridge and wherever else this company of 8 Crimson Crusaders would be led to go.

The Elf Ranger, Karvilo the Unseen, would also be a valuable ally as would the Half Orc Barbarian Trossach. BluddGrinn was certain that the Monk would prove to be a warrior of great merit and he would make sure that she was protected from further harm if at all possible.

The Rogue Brenys would also prove to be a valuable asset with the passage of time. The adversities of war would see to that and BluddGrinn had already witnessed first hand that she had a knack for being able to survive the unexpected bolts and arrows fired from unseen assailants.

The Bard Shayleigh had a charisma about her that could prove to be an invaluable leadership quality. The young War Cleric was still not certain about how much experience she had in battle, but he was a good judge of potential talent and she possessed talents that could inspire this new clan of Crimson Crusaders to rise above the circumstances and defeat any foe they could possibly face along The Black Tooth Ridge or anywhere else they were to journey to rid the evil taint from the borders of The Realm.

BluddGrinn was not eager to assert himself as a battle leader of this clan, but he would do his part to lead by example and confront any foe the 8 Crimson Crusaders would possibly face in battle, no matter where the conflict against the evil taint would take them.

This Shaman Tohmaz had asserted his leadership qualities, then quite unexpectedly announced that he too was but a follower in matters of war and battle. Support troops of Quality were a Necessity against the type of opposition the 8 Crimson Crusaders were certain to confront in and around The Black Tooth Ridge, but BluddGrinn had also considered himself to be a support warrior.

BluddGrinn the Grim was hoping that his assessment of Shayleigh Bran was true, according to what he had heard of her songs and orations during the journey up river. He was almost counting on his own instincts that she would prove to be a true Battle Bard once the 8 Crimson Crusaders were swallowed up in the shadows of The Black Tooth Ridge.

The important thing was not so much as who would lead this new clan of Crimson Crusaders, but how they would guard each other and fight for each other, no matter what impossible odds they may face or what type of foes challenged these Crimson Crusaders as they explored the lands beyond Botkinburg.

"Well Spoken Shaman!

I Am Honored You Would Have Me In Your Clan!

BluddGrinn Will Serve This Clan In Any Capacity!

I Will Gladly Fight For This Clan!

You Crimson Crusaders Are My Family Now!"

BluddGrinn the Grim felt a bit awkward trying to express himself, but he was certain that in the days ahead he would have ample opportunity to show each Crimson Crusader exactly how he felt on the inside, by his outward actions in battle and discovering gold treasure that was sure to be hidden in the dark and foreboding recesses of The Black Tooth Ridge!
