Subject: Haunted Highlands Q&A

The following has been copied and pasted from my former Land of Xenophobia Q&A Thread to inform PC Players how I plan to handle Combat as the Castle Keeper

I read a response from Tek in the Cirro Prologue that defines how I will be dealing with Combat and Dice Rolls etc.

I have both Dice and 2 sets of Card Decks that I will be using!

Fumble Deck is used when a 1 is rolled and as an example, when I was playing Castles & Crusades at the Tulsa DefCon7 last month my character made an Attack and rolled a 1, so I had to draw a Fumble Card and the result was I cut the ear of a teammate who was next to me in the battle!

Other Fumbles by players in that game resulted in one character missing his opponent and cutting his own foot and nearly taking himself out of the fight while bleeding!

There are Many Other Scenarios that make for an interesting Flavor!

As for the 2nd Deck, I will have to post a description in an Edit later as I am at the office early typing this info!

CRITICAL HIT DECK is the other Card Deck that I have the Choice of Using Depending Upon the Scenarios!

No Details to Share About the Critical Hit Deck other than it is an Option that I will Consider Using!

The FUMBLE DECK will Definitely Be Used as Frequently as Possible during the course of our adventure!

As the Castle Keeper ie DM/GM the players will state what they want to do and then I as the Castle Keeper ie DM/GM will do all the dice rolls and Card Deck Draws and then write up the description of what happened and the results!

The following is a Copy and Paste of what Tek replied to Cirro's question:

Tek
I use description and all that, and then at the very end of my post, list all of what happened (Wounds suffered, spells used, etc.) in a synopsis of the post. I most often don't include die numbers, as they tend to clutter up the post, in my opinion.

I'm sure you already know, but the major difference between Rules-based and Freeform is that in Rules based, the players state what they want to do, and the DM does ALL the dice rolls.

Hingatuli Hammer withdrew from his comrades at the first opportunity to spend time thanking his Dwarven war deity for guiding Hingatuli and his companions to victory.

He sensed a change transpiring deep within his soul as he petitioned Clangeddin Silverbeard for continued favor and guidance for the unknown battles that lay before him.

"Teach My Hands to War!"

"Grant Me the Strength and Courage to Overcome the Dark Forces of Evil that Taint this Land and Woods!"

"Equip Me with the Spells Needed to Expel these Forces of Darkness!"

C&C takes into account a different Experience Point advancement for the various Classes

Also the starting Gold varies from Class to Class

I reserved a Ranger for you tentatively over in the Fortress in the Fog recruitment section

Brianna had replied that she wants to have a Fighter in the Haunted Highlands C&C campaign

I am assuming that Dragon Mistress may want to have a Bard

Check over there for further details

Subject: Of Gods & Monsters

The title of the upcoming book is Of Gods & Monsters

Below is an explanation from the C&C website to whet your appetite regarding possible adventure scenarios!

Mythic epics are the driving force behind fantasy role playing games! Castles & Crusades is no exception. Here for the first time C&C branches out into the ether and brings you OF Gods & Monsters a book we guarantee you’ll want and use. Written by James M. Ward this book stands along side the Monsters & Treasure as a tremendous resource for adventure and fun.

James M. Ward returns to a subject he knows very well and delivering a plethora of information on hosts of gods, godlings, heroes and the magic that drives them. In Of Gods & Monsters Mr. Ward explores over 16 pantheons including Norse, Greek, Roman, American Indian, Aihrdian, Inzaen, demi-human pantheons and more. Beyond a simple recitation of deities, Of Gods & Monsters present playable incarnations of the gods in the guise of their own avatars. The deft and experienced hand of Mr. Ward explores spells, magic items, rituals and more.

Castle Keepers need not struggle with characters encountering all powerful deities, but rather they can use the avatars to spice up and drive adventures of the mythic and the divine. These avatars and designed to be playable version of the gods, but not the gods themselves. Complimented with mythic monsters and holy items Of Gods & Monsters is a must have for any serious CK.

But its not for the CK alone. Players find loads of information from hosts of new cleric and druid spells to rituals of the divine. Clerics, Druids, Paladins, Bards and all the characters benefit from Of Gods & Monsters.

Graced with a beautiful painting by Peter “20 Dollar” Bradley, lined with hordes of pictures of the gods themselves, Of Gods & Monsters is a perfect compliment to the ever growing C&C game system.

..... I was in the States from the end of January until May 12th when I flew back over here to the Philippines to attend to some things regarding an orphanage that we started in January before I went to the States.

Have had limited access to the internet while in the States and the AT&T Portable Internet Connection snafu has really messed things up for me!

But I was given another laptop while ministering in Albuquerque [as noted in my Xenophobia reply] so I will be typing up some scenario info over the course of the summer.

But I do need the new books that C&C are releasing over the next few months before I get the new adventure underway

There will probably be room for 5 PC characters in the new adventure and I am debating about running one or just concentrating on the NPCs etc

As for Oaks Heart, I have received a PM from ShadowDragon and I will try to get something written in the next few days regarding Hingatuli and his prayer for 2nd Level advancement

Subject: Another Campaign

Hey Nomad

Castles & Crusades has just released an updated Monsters and Treasures book and will be releasing the following over the course of the summer:

1. Updated Players Handbook

2. New Castle Keepers Guide

3. Of Gods and Men [at least I think that is the title]

The last one is filled with deities for all races and what they bequeath to their followers

Gods can become Avatars and walk among the PC characters and wreak some havok

I will need this one before I start another campaign

It will include American Indian deities and other civilizations plus deities for Gnomes, Halflings and all the races available in Castles & Crusades

I am examining some choices for beginning an new Adventure and since a friend of mine gave me a laptop while I was ministering in Albuquerque last month, I will be able to start typing and arranging some scenario notes

Hopefully by the end of September or in October I can get the new adventure underway

More role-play than what Xenophobia began with that really locked the PC players into a "forced" type of play

The new adventure will allow for PC choices affecting the direction of the Adventure moreso than the Castle Keeper herding the players along a pre-chosen path

I have skimmed over the information from the Adventure

ShadowDragon would you please PM me some info so I know what to do from here?

Again I remind you that all of my notes for this Adventure and regarding my PC Hingatuli Hammer were lost in the laptop freeze

I will be here a couple more weeks and hopefully I can at least make some contributions before returning to the States and then find somewhere to get online to continue participating in this Adventure with you guys!

Unfortunately this Adventure has come to a premature close due to the information stored for this game being lost when the AT&T internet plug toasted my laptop in February.

My apologies to All Players!

I plan on starting another C&C Campaign sometime later this year after some new products are released later this summer.

There are plenty of adjustments that I will be making as the Castle Keeper from what I learned during this Adventure and from some things I am currently reading.

Meanwhile, I am ministering in the Philippines [including getting an orphanage started] and only now over here have I been able to get to an internet connection where I can spend time visiting, catching up on things and typing in posts at the Red Dragon Inn.

In case you do not see the post I made in the Comings and Goings section about my "Laptop Toasted" here is my present status

I am currently in the Philippines and will Not be back in the States until the end of the first week of June

In February I had AT&T install an Internet Plug on my laptop which promptly froze my laptop

The laptop is still not working and AT&T basically said they were sorry about my laptop and that it had not happened to any of their other customers

So I am left without a laptop and no renumeration from AT&T for the inconvenience

All my Red Dragon Inn characters and plots and assorted info are now lost to me because of the toasting!

Anyway, I have skimmed the Q&A and will take a look at the Adventure entries to see how things have progressed during my absence

My apologies to all the GMs and Players for my vanishing from the Inn.

Last February after returning to the States I purchased an internet plug from AT&T for internet service and as soon as they installed it my laptop froze up.

Have been without use of the laptop since then and very little opportunity to get online.

Am currently in the Philippines and will come back to the States in June.

AT&T just told me they were sorry about my laptop and that nothing like that had ever happened before with any of their customers.

So all my Red Dragon Inn characters, plots, references etc have been lost along with the use of my laptop

Perhaps later this year I will start a new campaign with the Castles N Crusades format as I am waiting for some specific products to be released later this summer.

Long ways to go before getting settled over here!

Volkmar Vanara was lost in thought as he lost himself in the dancing flames of the fire as the ale warmed his bones.

He had noticed the atmosphere in the inn was not all that heart warming of a welcome, but the Khord Spiderguard had gotten used to that sort of scenario over the years.

The crackling sound of the logs shiftng in the fire hearth were slowly replaced by the sounds of a relentless pounding on the inn door.

If they want to come in why don't they just open the door?

The Khord was more than a bit annoyed by the sound interrupting his peaceful train of thought.

Suddenly the pounding shifted to the shutters!

Where's My Spear? That is No Weary Traveller seeking shelter from the night air!

Tuesday is the last time I will be at the internet cafe with my laptop, but I will only probably be able to copy and paste any updates that are posted by you players on Monday!

From these I will begin configuring and writing the next phase of what happens!

Which means I may or may not make any corrections to what I write once I get to the States.

Maybe next week I will find somewhere to plug in my laptop and either check for further comments or post what I have written as of what I have to go by on Monday!

..... so it looks like I will not get another update written by Tuesday!

Okay Gang:

The idea is to look at the Third Wave Map to get an idea of the locations of everyone including the opponents and then try to keep track by what has been posted.

Monks are All Dead and Fighters are All Spawn!

When you post what you intend to do in the Q&A it gives me a guideline for the writeup, but if no one posts in a week or 10 days I go ahead and write up the results!

Currently, if I do not hear from someone I will have your PC stand their ground defensively until in range to attack.

NOMAD the reviving aura of the Dark Arena Dome does NOT Affect the Wights!

Also, the Wights are so deadly that they have Killed or made Spawn of the Monks and Human Fighters!

Do not know when I will get online, so it may be a few days before I post again after arriving in the States!

That means sometime in February!

Wights are the most dangerous opponent yet as far as outright dying!

Bear with me through all this Hack and Slash because there will be plenty of room for role play once you get out of the Dark Arena!

There will be so many Kobalds to fight that I may have to update the Map once or twice before they are eliminated, but that is the only scenario that will warrant more than one Map!

At the end of the second post I have also noted each character highlighted in "Blue" and what your obvious options are given what has transpired during the first and second Combat Rounds!

Just have to write up what the South Enders do for their part of the Second Combat Round before proceeding to Combat Round Three!

I will Not Roll Initiative until After the South Enders have attacked the Wights for their turn in Combat Round Two!

By the way, I was just able to get an internet configuration for my laptop within the last hour!

Enjoy the Surprise!

North End
Can anyone truly describe the horror of the sight of your comrades fighting by your side one moment and then instantly being transformed into a lurid replica of the very enemy you are fighting?

Such was the case with Fighters Spawn #2 and #3 as they joined the Wights in attacking their former comrades!

Fighter #1 gasped in horrified unbelief as his former brother in arms attacked with its long deadly fingernails, claiming his life as Wight N1 struck in unison, draining and then transforming the Fighter into yet another Undead Spawn!

The Fighter stumbled as he tried to get away from the Spawn and Wight, but the transformation was rapid and swift and as he tried to get away he lost all semblance of his humanity and instinctively lashed out with his long misshapen claws at Fighter #5.

Fighter #5 fared no better as his life was drained by the attack, followed by Wight N2 stepping forward to deliver the final draining blow, before recreating the former Fighter into yet another Spawn!

Meanwhile, Spawn FS3 had previously begun circling behind Fighter #6 for a combined attack with Wight N3.

Some type of instinct told the Fighter that the Gnome Clerics were his only hope, but he only managed to run 5 feet before the transformation was complete; therefore, the now Undead Spawn instinctively slammed its metamorphosed deadly fingers into Fighter #7 to repeat the process!

Wight N4 lashed out with its long grotesque fingers at the wounded Fighter as he tried to run to the Clerics for help, draining and recreating the Fighter into the sixth Spawn!

This allowed Fighter #8 the opportunity to also run for his life, but the shock of seeing his comrade next to him transformed into a deadly facsimile of their enemies disoriented the Fighter just enough that he was unable to dodge the grotesque fingers as he also was slashed by his former brother in arms!

Fighter #8 panicked and instead of running towards the Clerics he ran around FS7 and made a beeline between FS3, FS6 and Wight N3 as fast as he could run with the remaining vitality left within him!

Traumatized by the transformations of his teammates and the sudden realization that he was the only Human Fighter left alive in the Dark Arena, the fear that overwhelmed his senses drove him to run directly into an unexpected confrontation with Wight E2 at the East End of the Dark Arena!

The sudden realization of his dire predicament and foolishly fear-driven choices were the last thoughts he had as a living being!

He instinctively struck the Wight with his Two-Handed Axe, but without any magical endowments the blade harmlessly glanced off the head of the grotesquerie that retaliated with the life draining transformation that recreated the former Fighter into another deadly Undead Spawn!

Thus the Dark Arena Consortium had their revenge upon the Human Fighters who had refused to follow their orders as the Dark Arena Spectators gasped in horror at what had so swiftly befallen their heroes!

Many thousands of pounds of Gold Coins were suddenly lost by those who had gambled upon the Human Fighters emerging from the Dark Arena as victors!

East End
Since the Monks have been eliminated and the 7 Fighters transformed into Spawn, the East End Wights begin marching towards the South Enders!

Wight E1 breaks ranks and moves 15 feet to an attack position in front of ThunnGarr the Mighy, but its long finger claws scrape harmlessly against the Large Shield of Bashing!

The newly transformed FS8 moves 30 feet ahead to a position next to Wight E1 and is prepared to attack the Giant Dwarf on the next Combat Round, while Wight E2 moves 30 feet in a straight line to a position 10 feet to the right of ThunnGarr and 30 feet in front of Shandra!

Wight E3 moves to a position 15 feet behind E2, while E4 moves 10 feet behind E3 that almost draws it into striking distance of ThunnGarr the Mighty!

South End
Wight S4 moves 5 feet to the left side of ThunnGarr while S3 moves 15 feet to the diagonal bottom left of the Giant Dwarf, but their simultaneous attack is nullified as their finger claws rake harmlessly along the Large Shield of Bashing that ThunnGarr manages to swing back against them in a desperate defensive maneuver!

Meanwhile, Wight S1 moves 5 feet in front of the Fuzzy Wolverine while S2 moves 10 feet to the right side of the magical protector of Bumble Brew!

However, the Fuzzy Wolverine manages to miraculously twist and dodge its body in such a manner that the Wights are unable to strike him with their deadly draining finger claws!

West End
Realizing that this is indeed a desperate situation that they are facing, the Gnome Clerics spring into action to try to herd the remaining Wights close enough to the South Enders in hopes that the remaining gladiators will be able to destroy their opponents!

The West End Wights that have been turned by Cleric #7 flee another 30 feet towards the East End and Cleric #7 is mindful that if he comes within 10 feet of the Undead that he has turned, then the spell will be broken; otherwise, 8 more Combat Rounds remain before the fleeing Wights are able to recover and go on the offensive!

Therefore, Cleric #7 jogs 60 feet to the South End to a position 75 feet directly in front of Ullrich and just out of range 15 feet NorthWest of fleeing Wight W4.

His strategy is to get close enough to the East End Wights to turn them away from the South Enders!

Cleric #4 runs his maximum 120 feet to a position 30 feet directly behind FS2 at the North End of the Dark Arena!

His strategy is to turn as many offensively active Wights and Spawn towards the South Enders as possible!

Cleric #6 follows the same strategy by running 90 feet to a position 25 feet directly behind FS7 at the North End of the Dark Arena!

Finally, Cleric #8 decides to charge the advancing South End Wights!

He jogs 45 feet to a position next to the left of Wight S1 and unleashes a Turn Undead spell that has the maximum effect of turning 6 Extraordinary Undead opponents!

Wights S1, S2, S3, E1 and FS8 flee 30 feet towards the East End of the Dark Arena!

Wight S4 is blocked by ThunnGarr; therefore, it merely cowers without moving!

Note from the Castle Keeper
Wights that are Fleeing or Cowering are unable to counter attack any gladiators until 10 Combat Rounds have expired; therefore, Amberlyn is now able to advance 15 feet and hack Wight S2 with her magically enhanced Feathered Sword Long Sword without being in danger!

ThunnGarr is able to turn his back on Wight S4 as it cowers and throw his Dwarven Thrower War Hammer at one of the still advancing Wights!

Sir Yder may now charge Wight S1 or S2 and strike with his magically enhanced Dragon Slayer Long Sword without any possible counter attacks from any of the advancing Wights as they are currently out of range!

Ullrich is still able to fire 3 Arrows at any of the Wights within range of his magically enhanced Oath Bow!

Wight E2 is still within attacking range of Shandra and Ariane if either or both decide to charge S2 or S3 and attack with their Staff of the Woodlands [used as a magically enhanced QuarterStaff] or Holy Avenger Long Sword respectively!

They could charge Wight E2 in a combined effort with the Giant Dwarf, but E3 is also in attack range if the Wights get the Initiative!

Of course, if the Gladiators get the Initiative next Combat Round then Cleric #7 will be able to turn those Wights!

Cunning Fox could either charge S1 or S2 with his Staff of the Woodlands brandished like a magically enhanced QuarterStaff or he could unleash another 3 charge blast from his Ring of the Ram against either foe without moving since it has a 50 foot maximum range!

Also, keep in mind that the North End Wights and Spawn are advancing and may possibly be Fleeing to the South End from any Turn Undead spells by the 2 Clerics behind them at the North End of the Dark Arena!

Bumble Brew and Ollie Gory will select the best targets with their respective Staffs!

Arrowhawk and Unicorn will continue to attack Wight S4 that is currently cowering next to ThunnGarr since he is blocking its pathway for fleeing!

Please Post Your Decisions for T1-CR2 in the Q&A along with possible choices of action for CR3 if the gladiators gain the Initiative!

That would allow me to advance the storyline Wave 3 sequence a bit more quickly if I have the time to configure and post before boarding another plane!

Thank You!
