Manalagna Hammer surveyed the scene and gathered up his belongings ... including the newly acquired deadly weapon he had won in the arena!
Looking up in the sky he viewed the bizarre formation that had forced itself upon the world in which the Dwarf Druid wandered so far from home!
"Come To Me My Faithful Banatan ... For We Ride With The Wind This Night To Confront This Unknown Danger!"
In mere moments the Giant Eagle named Banatan answered the summons and together the Dwarf Druid and his Animal Companion set forth on a journey of possible no return!

I have been popping in and out the past few days after returning from the States!
Did not have internet access during my travels and since returning I have been swamped with some Real Life issues to resolve before going back to the office on Monday the 18th, so tonight is the first I have been able to start updating!
Oaks Heart and Lantan I have posted in tonight and I am trying to figure out what else I can still accomodate?
If you all think I should be dropped there is no hard feelings!

Subject: Feeble Attempt at Humor
"Looks like we missed our ride!"
Hingatuli Hammer grunted in amusement at his own feeble attempt to make a light hearted joke about missing the wagons and having to walk much further than expected.
"You Stay Close Now Muffin!"
Then with another feeble attempt at using humor to make light of the situation, but mostly to remind his companions to stay alert in case of unknown danger, he adds:
"This may turn out to be a blessing in disguise! What with all the unknown danger lurking in these woods ... not to mention that Hangman Tree traipsing off without so much as a backwards glance towards us ... we better catch up to the wagons in case they get ambushed by some other monstrosity!"
Hingatuli Hammer kneels down and wraps his arms around Muffin and whispers a command in the dog's ears ... then he arises after replacing his Battle Axe with a loaded Bolt in his Heavy Cross Bow ... just in case something unexpected happens out of range of his Battle Axe!
Muffin stays close to the Cleric ... but as commanded ... is sniffing the ground a few yards to the right of the wagon trail as Hingatuli Hammer continues to march with his eyes focused and alert for anything that seems amiss!

Subject: A Hastily Devised Plan
Septimus charges into the inn and the crowd swiftly parts and Sep continues forward towards the guy offering 2000 gold just for information about him.
"AH! The man of the hour!"
He exclaims as he, in the same move, dodges Sept's blade and (if Septimus has his pistol in his belt) takes that and points it at him. (If Sep isn't carrying his pistol then he draws a dagger from a wrist sheath, grabs Sep's collar and puts the dagger to his throat.)
He then exclaims out loud.
"There is a fine line between brave and stupid my friend, I believe I'll be taking him back with me then Lucious."
He seems to be talking to the guy dressed in the same uniform as Shaben. He then whispers to Septimus.
"My name is Mr. C, its all you need to know, I'm a friend of Shabens. Come with me and get your 'friend' to follow."
He then marches Septimus with the (knife or pistol) to the side of his neck but when he's out he leads Septimus through the streets at a fast pace up to a humble house in the government district.
"Supid ... Stupid ... Stupid ..."
Rex muttered to himself as he witnessed the proceedings and spat in disgust as Septimus was led away captive.
The Mercenary was about to approach the men and try to get a few gold coins by leading them on a wild goose chase for the elusive Septimus Sandalwood, but his dark-hearted friend had certainly made a mess of those plans!
Fortunately for the Mercenary and the newcomer Mot the Dwarf ... this Mr C was only privy to the knowledge of Septimus and Evani ... which would hopefully work to their advantage in a bold ... although hastily devised plan!
Rex the Reckless motioned for Mot to follow as the Mercenary cautiously tracked the progress of the captors as they forced Septimus into a humble house in the government district.
The Mercenary waited as long as he dared ... making sure enough time had elapsed so as not to arrive so obviously as if he had been shadowing his quarry!
When at last he could wait no longer ... Rex strode boldly to the front door and banged loudly until the door opened ... allowing the Mercenary to confidently announce:
"I am a newly arrived Mercenary ... and am at your service! My companion and I heard rumors at a local tavern ... from a loose lipped lout who gave us directions to this place ... that our talents could prove useful ... for the right price!"
Rex awaits a response and will act accordingly!

Subject: Reflections of a Cleric
Hingatuli Hammer called Muffin to his side and knelt down to scratch the dog's ears playfully, while firmly reassuring the animal that all was well and that Hingatuli was pleased with how the animal had reacted to the threat of the Hangman Tree.
He also gave Muffin a stern command to remain close by his side for the journey back to the wagon. As he knelt he wrapped his arms around the hound's neck and rubbed the right side of his face against the left side of the dog's face, allowing Muffin to lick the Cleric in a bond of affection that would ensure Hingatuli that Muffin could be counted upon to obey his future commands and come to the aid of himself and the party when danger arose again.
Then Hingatuli Hammer arose, scratching Muffin on the top of the head, while thoughtfully reflecting upon the vision he had received while in the wagon, before the morning's excitement had followed after the wagon wheel had broken.
He drank in the fresh air as the effects of the Hangman Tree mists became an almost forgotten memory, focusing his attention upon the vision he had received earlier in the day:
Suddenly his vision blurred and the sound of a war horn filled Hingatuli's skull as he saw a mass of decaying vegetation covering a steam filled dark hole in the bowels of a broken tree.
Words suddenly invaded Hingatuli's ears and skull, but there was no voice to the words:
"HINGATULI! Know that my eyes are upon you. I see your need and your cause is just. Seek ye this dark forbidden place. It will bring you understanding of what you are now up against. These dark times are just begining for you and your companions, DO NOT FALTER! I will give you the means to overcome if you have the wisdom to apply it. Prove yourself to me."
As Hingatuli Hammer's vision cleared his mind told him that 3 new spells had been received from his time spent in prayer and devotion to Clangeddin Silverbeard the Dwarven god of War much earlier that morning:
1.) magical stone
2.) Bless
3.) command
As Hingatuli Hammer pondered upon the vision and his unused spells, the Cleric wrestled with the fact that he had NOT done much this day to "Prove Himself to Clangeddin" as a worthy Cleric during the episode with the Hangman Tree.
However, Hingatuli took solace in the fact that a good warrior always takes notes of the strengths and weaknesses of those with whom he goes to battle with as companions in warfare!
This he had done well enough and plans for strategic action began formulating within himself as he reflected upon how his companions had fared against the Hangman Tree.
He also took further solace in the fact that a good warrior always acquaints himself with the tactics of the unknown enemies he may encounter, so he was now better prepared to take action against any new dangers whenever and wherever he and his companions were confronted in the not too distant future!
"Clangeddin I consecrate myself before you afresh and anew! Grant me the Boldness to Take Action and the Courage to Vanquish My Foes! Thank You for what you have allowed me to see this day!"
Hingatuli Hammer continues his prayers as he marches with his companions, keeping vigil to the right and to the left for any signs of danger or traces of the group being followed by any unseen friends or foes!
His Battle Axe is ready for action!

..... but some of the people I talked with made you guys on this site sound like sour grapes!
Met a Module Writer at the Tulsa Con who told me most of the people at the Red Dragon Inn griped about 3rd edition stuff when it first came out, but I have no references from that era to back up what I was told.
What I did purchase was Castles and Crusaders and when I get the time [just arrived back last night in Doha!]I will be figuring out how to incorporate it into my Xenophobia recruitment, or just abandon the project if the interested parties do not want to make the adjustments!

Hingatuli Hammer slowly nodded his head as the rhythm of the wagon coaxed him into a slumbering state, but with each bump along the trail Hingatuli would snap back to consciousness and focus upon the surroundings as he scratched the head of Muffin thoughtfully.
Suddenly his vision blurred and the sound of a war horn filled Hingatuli's skull as he saw a mass of decaying vegetation covering a steam filled dark hole in the bowels of a broken tree.
Words suddenly invaded Hingatuli's ears and skull, but there was no voice to the words:

Without a moment's hesitation Hingatuli Hammer boldly made his way in the direction where the two dogs had disappeared, determined to prove himself to his god of War and determined to Not Falter as the vision voice had decreed only mere moments before!

“I believe we are out numbered 5 to 1, all those 2 foot holes are filled with Kobolds, and there may be more that I do not see. Do we parley for the cows and silver? Or fight and trust we are not swarmed under by blue vermin?”
Manuhol the Monk was inspired by the spunk of his fellow monk named T'puuli. He was ready to fight alongside her ... even unto death against the blue vermin!
Leaning in closer for the entire group to hear his words ... without alerting the kobolds ... Manuhol the Monk simply replied:
"We came for the cows ... and additional silver ... would be most welcome ... but in case you have not noticed ... the tunnel we just came through ... is now filled ... with more kobolds ... which means we are surrounded now ... cut off from any avenue of escape!"
"If you choose to stand and fight ... then I am with you ... no matter what the odds ... but returning the cattle to the townsfolk ... is why we are here ... and we can live to fight ... another day!"

Rex the Reckless had silently made his way closer to his group of friends ... where he was able to both see ... and hear ... exactly what was transpiring.
Although his contract had been terminated ... by the unexpected exit of Shaben ... the Mercenary had come to a crossroads in his life ... where the only thing that mattered to him ... was doing the right thing ... for his Family!
Keeping company with Septimus ... and the Lady ... even unto death ... was what Rex decided was best ... for himself ... and ... for his Family ... along with this newcomer ... named Mot ... would make the journey ... more interestiing ... for Rex the Reckless!
His decision was sealed when the Lady fired her pistol into the yielding flesh of her former assailant ... and Rex found the reaction quite to his liking ... a bond of blood with the Lady that Rex would fight for her no matter where their path ... or destiny ... led them in the future!
Now was the time to make haste ... and ... if they were ever to survive the experience ... find a place ... a safe haven ... to solve the mysteries that were gripping their hearts ... like murderous maniacal fingers ... around their throats!
Stepping from the shadows of the secluded alley ... Rex the Reckless hissed a warning that reflected the echo of the gunshot wound that had slain the man in Lady Evani's grasp:
"Quickly My Friends ... We Must Find A Safe Haven ... Where We Can Establish A HeadQuarters ... Hidden In The Under Belly ... Of Our Enemies ... To Solve The Mystery ... Of This ... Corfsand ... And Why Shaben ... Chose The Path He Chose!"
