Subject: Manuhol the Monk

Somewhere in a secluded place on the outskirts of town, one Manuhol the Monk was holding a one-sided conversation with Chronepsis [god of time] concerning Seifu ...

"Chronepsis ... oh 'Watcher of Time' ... did you witness the demise of Seifu ... did his dragon statue melt ... or crumble ... before your unblinking eyes ... or did it merely fade away ... into nothingness ... on that infamous ... ignoble day ... when ..."

The piercing screams of a woman cut through the air like a hot knife through butter ... disrupting the prayerful meditation of Manuhol the Monk ...

... who then calmly arises and purposefully follows the echoes of her wails ... for you see ... Faith seldom ever gets in a hurry!

Subject: About Your GreatSword

As Manalagna Hammer made his way to his appointed time of battle, he pondered about whether or not he had made the right choices about what he had brought with him to confront Xira ... and what he had chosen to leave behind in the Battle Chamber.

He wondered if his two Throwing Axes would have been a wise choice to use to parry against the Scythes of Xira ... but they were secure in their appropriate place in the Exotic Riding Saddle with his Faithful Mount Takas.

And what about those 10 ShortSpears ... would they have proven useful this day? But again ... they too were secure with Takas.

There was no use thinking about the usefulness of the 5 Quivers of Javelins that held 6 Javelins each ... for they too were in their proper place ... also with Takas.

Manalagna Hammer had chosen to leave his Druid Vestments, Healers Belt, Holy and Mistletoe, his Wand of Cure Light Wounds, his Spell Component Pouch and his Healers Kit with the rest of his possessions in the care of the young ... but trustworthy ... attendant.

His most difficult decision was the choice of weapon to bring with him ... and which one to leave in the Battle Chamber with the rest of his possessions.

After some deep thought ... and soul searching ... Manalagna Hammer had decided to leave his +1 Mouldering QuarterStaff with his Druid Vestments and his other belongings ... choosing to bring his trusty +1 Flaming Scimitar that activated whenever the Dwarven Druid either whispered ... or shouted ... "Flamer!"

He wore his Rhino Hide plus his Ring of Sustenance ... and carried his Caster's Shield [currently having Cure Light Wounds on it] on his left arm ... with his Amulet of Natural Armour +2 secured in its proper place to provide the maximum protection!

The Dwarven Druid strode confidently to the Battle Arena ... satisfied that what he had brought with him from the Battle Chamber would suffice ... but there was yet the possibility of one more item to use ... depending upon the state of mind of its possesser!

When Manalagna Hammer had located the Charismatic ... and Buffish ... Orc Announcer ... Manalagna Hammer strode boldly up to him and declared, "Greetings Ken! May I Use Your GreatSword To Battle Xira?"

Manalagna Hammer began sorting his belongings and choosing what he would take with him to the arena.

At least Tenarr had been truthful regarding the nature [or unnatural as it were!] of what the Dwarven Druid would be up against.

"First off, she seldom hits her opponent; it's the opponent's weapons she always hits, at least once. Quite a few challengers have stormed back here after a fight with her, quite angry that their weapon has been cleaved in half. A few even asked me to fix it, but I haven't learned to fix weapons; I can only try to make a few."

He had also noted from the attendant that the fighting style of Xira was bizarre and that if Manalagna Hammer valued his life he would do his best to avoid contact with her killing blow!

Manalagna chose his weapon and fighting gear and left the remainder in good faith that Tenarr would watch and keep his gear from disappearing. No matter what happened during the Sand Dance.

"That's another thing that everyone who's fought her was muttering about. Something about how she just touches you with one of her hands and you feel sick."

"Then I had best not let her touch me!"

"Of course, I'm not supposed to be telling you this. It's against arena protocol, so if you could forget that it came from my mouth, that'd be good; there's no need to get me fired."

"No need for you to worry about that ... lad ... your secret is safe with me!

Manalagna Hammer appreciated the friendly warning and information that Tenarr was providing him ... especially about the two scythe weapons Xira would carry on the battlefield and her intent to kill her opponents!

"As long as she's using the first scythe, you're OK. As soon as she uses that scythe that's over her shoulder... I suggest you don't let her hit you with that, because with that scythe she always goes for the kill, and even Fahinn has a harder time stopping that blade from finishing its opponent."

"I would suspect as much from Xira ... and Fahinn does seem to look a bit worse for wear ... so I will try to remember your secrets during the heat of battle ... for which I will reward you for your honesty ... when I return!"

Manalagna Hammer made his final selections and hands Tenarr the 4sp that remains to his name as a tip for the tips!

"These are the last four pieces of silver that I have in my possession ... guard my gear ... and I will make it worth your while when I collect my winnings!"

Manalagna Hammer excuses himself as he makes his way to the arena to have a final word with Ken before the Sand Dance with Xira begins!

Subject: The Village

Rex leaned forward and gazed at the beauty of the sea as he listened to the melancholy tale spun by Septimus, both hands gripping the railing as the mesmerizing waves began to take his gaze inward along the many faceted corridors of his memories.

"Yes ... the pocketbook has vanished over the horizon ... but there are other pocketbooks willing to empty for the services of a Mercenary such as me ... and I have no where in particular to go ... and no where in particular to return ... and you dear Septimus ... are a troubled man ... seeking trouble ... even as more trouble seeks for you ... and where there is trouble ... there are pocketbooks willing to empty ...

"Not that I am seeking your harm ... nor that I am looking for a bounty on your head ... whether dead ... or alive ... for I hold you no malice ... for if I did ... you would have been left to bleed on the deck of the ship ... or to be swallowed up in the abyss of death ... lying upon your bed in your cabin these past days ...

"Had I borne you any ill will ... even a smidgen ... you would not have left my cabin alive ... for your arrogance of putting your sword to my throat ... was forgiven before you stood upright from your seat ...

"So I am not journeying with you ... and the lady ... to claim a price on either of your heads ... but I choose to right a wrong ... for where we shall go ... there are surely wrongs ... to be righted ... and the price ... of the pocketbooks ... will have no bearing on such deeds ...

"There once was a place known only as The Village ... where a young Paladin in training ... had a lovely family he was raising ... a beautiful ... and devoted ... wife ... a son ... and a daughter ... all young in their youthful prime ... who encouraged the young Paladin in training ... to do his part ... to relieve suffering ... to right wrongs ... for his young wife knew ... she must share her love ... her husband ... with those in need ... of his special talents ...

"So the young Paladin in training journeyed to a coastal town ... you should remember it well ... dear Septimus ... that had fallen under the rule of a ... shall we say ... harsh and intemperate rogue ... where the populace cried out for deliverance ... and adventurers roamed ... to answer their cries of despair ...

"Perhaps you remember the night it happened ... at the Tavern ... known as ... Der Gylde ... where you had come to ply your trade ... and invited a young Paladin in training ... to sit at the table with you ... and dine ...

"His name ... at that time ... was merely called ... Reginald DuRex ... who found in you a kindred spirit ... of sorts ... you and he ... laughed ... and cried ... and spoke of better things ... as you ate ... and drank ... into the night ...

"You went your separate ways ... found lodging for the night ... but early in the dawning ... there were sounds of a terrible fight ... this Reginald DuRex ... as he was known ... answered the cries of fright ... from a group of townspeople ... who had been beset upon ... by rogues in the morning light ...

"There was another ... who flashed his blade ... and leapt to their aid ... you dear Septimus ... you ...

"Though outnumbered ... you answered their call ... and your blade ... made many fall ...

"But there were others ... stalking and lurking ... who were about to spring upon you in surprise ... when there in the glory ... of that morning sunrise ... that young Paladin in training ... one Reginald DuRex ... sought to even the odds ...

"There was great celebration that day ... and far into the night ... as both you ... Septimus ... and the young Paladin in training ... one Reginald DuRex ... were toasted ... and heralded ... for delivering that coastal town ... from the clutches ... of the evil ... that had strangled the decency ... from those imprisoned within ...

"One day stretched to two ... then to three ... and on to four ... the townsfolk brought their riches ... piling them on the floor ...

"The young Paladin ... now had what he needed ... to build a castle ... for his family of four ... and you ... dear Septimus ... had more than enough ... to raise an army ... for your personal war ...

"Reginald DuRex ... and you ... dear Septimus ... parted as friends ... after another week ... the young Paladin in training ... was going back to his home ... and family ... while you ... dear Septimus ... were to travel another road ... dark ... and bleak ...

"So it was ... that Reginald DuRex ... declined to partake ... of your personal war ... but chose instead ... to build a castle ... for his lovely family ... of four ...

"So back to The Village he journeyed ... with great hope in his heart ... but what was there to greet him ... forever changed his heart ...

"From the smoldering ruins ... that he saw from afar ... lay the ashes of his loved ones ... that cut a deep ... and lasting ... scar ...

"Reginald DuRex read a note ... that was tacked to the oaken door ... held in place by a bloodied dagger ... written in the blood ... of his innocent family ... who were ... no more ...

"The note read ... 'Let this be a lesson to all who aid a marked man' ... and from that moment ... forward ... Reginald DuRex ... ran ... and ran ... and ran ...

"He became a Berserker Paladin ... avenging the blood of those he lost ... no matter what the obstacle ... no matter ... what the cost ...

"He chose the life of a Mercenary ... and for a price ... exacted vengeance ... upon those ... who dispensed fear ...

"Now he stands before you ... in all his battle gear ... now known as ... Rex the Reckless ... to join you ... in your battle ... whether it takes us ... far ... or near ...

Manalagna Hammer was impressed with the interior of the Gladiator Chamber B as he began to place his belongings on the table to decide what to take with him to confront Xira.

As Tenarr stood by to assist, Manalagna asked, "What can you tell me about Xira ... what are her strengths ... her weaknesses ... and do you have any suggestions as to what type of strategy I should use against her?"

Manalagna Hammer politely excused himself and proceeded to the battle chamber on the western end of the arena.

The Dwarven Druid promises himself that if there is any way he can use his own powers to help Xira ... and ease the obvious pain borne for untold years by Fahinn Wencor ... then he will gladly do so ... no matter what the outcome of his Sand Dance with Xira.

He begins to ponder which items from his battle gear that he will use to battle Xira as he approaches the chamber.

Manalagna Hammer was pleased to know that his 4sp would at least have the company of 500 golden crowns ... even if he were to lose to this mysterious champion Xira.

He then apologizes for not properly introducing himself and politely asking the Elderly Cleric Manager's name. He now asks the Cleric Manager to forgive this oversight that he has made in his enthusiasm to enquire about the upcoming Sand Dance.

He also asks the name of the Charismatic Orc announcer, so he can properly address him when he meets Xira in the arena.

Finally he concludes, "Thank you for your kindness and patience in answering my naieve questions sir! Now if you would be so kind as to direct me to my battle chamber so I can prepare to entertain the masses ... and prove myself a worthy opponent against your champion Xira!"

"But one last question if I may ... would Xira be your daughter?"

Manalagna Hammer was certain that the Cleric Manager was telling the truth about the reward and spells, but he still had some questions to ask the kind-faced man.

[Attention DM: the following questions are asked in sequence with appropriate polite pauses for the Cleric Manager to answer]

"What can you tell me ... or are willing to tell me ... about this gift that Xira offers?"

"Thank You! I Understand Completely! Now what can you tell me ... or are willing to tell me ... about Xira's hands ... and why they are wrapped in bandages?"

"I See! Now what type of reward ... if any ... do I receive if Xira defeats me in the arena ... not that I intend to let her win just to gain a reward from anyone!"

"Yes ... I Understand Your Position! Are there any battle rules in the arena I need to be aware of ... and what battle gear am I allowed to employ in this Sand Dance?"

"Good afternoon, how may I help you?"

The elderly man with the kind look was not exactly what Manalagna Hammer had been expecting ... but then again ... given the Orc and Xira ... Manalagna really had no idea what to expect at this point.

"I have accepted the challenge to fight your champion Xira ... your announcer told me that my reward for victory ... was a special gift from Xira ... and two thousand golden crowns ... from you sir!"

He waits politely for a response and adds, "I was also informed that a spell over this arena ... apparently created and maintained by you sir ... will spare both your champion Xira ... and myself ... the indignity of dying in battle ... is this true?"
