Subject: Entering the house

Gunther bowed to Norwell Graven as a sign of respect for his extended hospitality, then turned to his companions and nodded for them to accept the gracious invitation. Gunther and his companions entered the house and politely waited as Norwell introduced his family and ushered the companions to a waiting table.

After Gunther bowed respectfully to each family member and flashed his brilliant smile to each one, he softly declared, "Peace be to your house! It is such an honor to be invited to break bread with your family. My name is Gunther and these are my companions Oriel, Sentinel and Fandil."

The young Paladin paused respectfully to allow each of his companions to respond in their own particular way to their hosts.

As they waited for their food and drink Gunther studied the situation and felt a peace to proceed with his prayerful plan as a representative of the entire group. He even offered to share his honey with the Graven family.

"Friend Norwell, our group has assembled together from a variety of backgrounds and regions. We only recently met while resting in Hochoch and chose to travel together as a matter of safety and companionship in an unknown land."

Gunther paused once again to speak a blessing of thanks for the hospitality and the food and drink being set before the guests, allowing everyone to either agree or invoke their own particular deity for the hospitality bestowed upon them before proceeding.

"Some in our group are searching for suitable land to purchase with the hope of settling down and raising families in a good community."

Gunther paused again to allow his companions to either nod or respond in agreement.

"As for me," Gunther smiled broadly, "I too am looking for suitable land to build a small castle to someday raise a family of my own and to help provide my neighbors with suitable protection from any unforeseen danger that may find its way to our community."

The young Paladin focused on Norwell to discern what effect his words were having, his intent being to send a message to Norwell Graven that Gunther and his companions were ready to assist the farmer, his family and his neighbors if any danger was lurking nearby.

"We chose to come to Orlane because we heard from other travelers that the land here is some of the most beautiful and productive to behold ... and truly what we heard about this fertile land was but a shadow of its true bounty."

Gunther paused for a generous bite to eat and a drink of tea. He praised his hostess for some of the best tea he had ever tasted before calmly stating matter of factly:

"We also heard some wild tales that good farm property has been abandoned for seemingly no reason at all and about people in Orlane disappearing into thin air and mysteriously reappearing later. We also heard that some people just vanish, never to be seen again. My companions and I decided that what we heard was just rumors to scare people away from Orlane who might otherwise be interested in buying good property here. We think someone or a group of people just want to buy all this fertile land for themselves and are trying to scare strangers and investors away from Orlane so they can corner the market for their own greedy purposes."

Gunther took another bite and washed it down with the tea before finally adding:

"From the way your children and your neighbor ran inside your houses when we came peacefully walking along the road ... it would seem that something may not be quite right in this community. Is there anything we can do to help?"

Gunther waits for the response of his host.

Depending upon what Norwell Graven has to say the following questions are also asked by Gunther and his other 3 companions:

Gunther and his companions ask which inn is the best in town and which merchants or farmers can give the best price for their products?

Is there any property available for sale and who do we talk to about a fair price?

Is the town safe for strangers, who actually runs the town [both formally and informally] and who exactly can be trusted?

Is there any truth to the wild rumors of people disappearing?

How is the fishing in the lake and is there property available bordering the lake?

Have there been any cattle or livestock reported mutilated or missing?

Have there been any reports of homes being broken into or property damage?

What are Norwell's thoughts about these wild rumors and if people have indeed been disappearing when did this all begin happening?

Some general questions about any local temples, the "good old days in Orlane" and about the town in general?

Why are the fields and food so prosperous if indeed people are disappearing?

Does Norwell have any family or friends that he would like Gunther to visit to make sure they are safe and where's the best and safest place to get food, drink and rest?

Gunther also offers Norwell 5 gold and a promise of protection for his cooperation in answering the questions before the young Paladin and his companions graciously excuse themselves to reunite with Valerus Cain and the rest of the party to deliver their report.

Subject: Hey Trip First Timer Here

Hey Trip

This is my first time with the D&D gaming experience!

Might have read a few of the comics years ago!

Do not have any specific information about this particular module except for the hints you have dropped along the way!

This is proving to be more fun than I first expected when I signed on for the adventure!

I am looking forward to reading and watching the other groups during the adventure and then role playing as though Gunter does not know what is going on!

Although I do not know this module or any of the other modules for that matter, I will make some role playing hunches based on my background as a reader of books, watcher of movies and writer of some tales of my own!

Subject: Group #1 Nomad Consortium and SoulTaker

Feel free to speak up with your suggestions and comments!

From my understanding of Trip's rules we are the only ones who are allowed to make decisions about what to do here!

We are on our own!

I think basically we go in and be cordial and post for Trip on the An Evil in Orlane thread what we are doing and the questions we are trying to discreetly ask the farmer and his family!

Remember at the end of your role play when you wish to describe what you want to do for interaction for Trip to work with is to type in message to get the italics!

Example of what I am saying:

Gunther asks which inn is the best in town and which merchants or farmers can give the best price for their products. He also mentions that some of his companions are looking for land to purchase to settle down and raise families at sometime in the future. We have heard rumors that some of the lands in the area may be available because the farms have been abandoned. Heard some wild tales about people disappearing and then reappearing but some never being seen again. We just figure those are just rumors being spread by some people who want to buy up the land for themselves. Is there any property available for sale and who do we go talk to about a fair price?

That should get the italics!

What I am figuring is that we sort through all the questions that were posted earlier by everyone in the party before we separated and went to the house!

Then each of us can freely incorporate those previous questions in our italics messages for Trip to work with in his next posting!

At this point the four(4)of us are the only ones who can discuss among ourselves what to do!

***** Sentinel and Soultaker may have an advantage of gaining the trust of the children being a Halfling and a Gnome equipped with sleight of hand and parlor tricks to captivate the trust of the children and with their antics may be able to get some information from the children while Nomad and I are talking with the farmer and his wife Sarah, but of course both of you can also offer questions to the farmer and his wife as you freely choose!

Subject: Group 1 We Should Enter the House

I am for entering the house and having some tea and cheese!

Gives us an opportunity to ask our questions!

Also gives us an opportunity to spring a trap!

We already know there are 2 inns in town and we can glean some more information before we press on!

It is now about 8am Friday morning for me and I will not be able to do a writeup for An Evil in Orlane until late tonight after I get back home!

Usually in the movies there is someone or a family that gives the hero(s) some valuable information at the risk of their lives!

I am gambling that this is the situation here in the house!

Subject: Greeting the farmer

Gunther was honored that Valerus had chosen the young Paladin to speak to the worried-looking farmer in an attempt to allay the fears of Orlane’s obviously frightened populace, while quite possibly procuring some insight or information as to what had been transpiring in Orlane these past months.

Thoughtfully pausing a few moments to determine whether or not to leave most of his belongings with the adventurers staying behind with Valerus, the young Paladin recalled the advice of his maternal grandfather and decided to carry all his belongings with him in case all was not as it appeared to be.

If the appearance of a worried-looking farmer was merely an illusion to seduce the party into letting their guard down, then Gunther was best advised to keep his arsenal of weapons at hand in case of a sudden ambush.

There had been plenty of time to pray during the two day journey to Orlane and Gunther realized that he must position himself in front of the farmer in a direct line of sight with the barn so the young Paladin could utilize his gifting to discern evil within a 60' range.

Valerus had become the unofficial leader of the party during the journey as the Druid shared his wealth of wisdom with the adventurers regarding the balance of nature and the goodness inherent in all things. Gunther was content to let Valerus take the lead because it gave the young Paladin precious time to remain aloof from the group when it became necessary to seek guidance or became urgent for Gunther to commune in quiet prayer and meditation with his God. Gunther was well able to lead when necessary and now was such a time to do so.

Gunther shouldered his back pack, carrying his Medium Shield with his left arm/hand, while keeping his right hand free to extend a friendly greeting to the farmer with either a gesture of welcome or a firm handshake. His Broad Sword was near enough to easily pull from its sheathe for offensive protection should a sneak attack from hostiles come sudden and swift if all was not as it seemed with the farmer.

Valerus had chosen the Gnome named Fandil the Wise and the runt Halfling named Sentinel the Small to utilize their talents to help Gunther evaluate the situation along with the Human named Oriel Blackmoon. Perhaps the Gnome and Halfling would prove to be enough of a curiosity to the farmer that he would engage in a lengthy conversation.

Gunther was glad the Ranger was included. He nodded to the members of the party remaining behind, respectfully bowed to Valerus, then as the young Paladin turned to go greet the farmer he whispered to the Ranger, "Follow my lead!"

The young Paladin's athletically quick long strides swiftly closed the distance between himself and the farmer, while his 3 companions followed at a much slower pace to allow Gunther time to break the ice one on one with the farmer.

Gunther purposely positioned himself directly in front of the farmer with the barn directly behind the man, then greeted the farmer with his right arm raised and the palm of his hand facing the farmer in a universal sign of peace.

The young Paladin paused discreetly for the proper effect followed by a sincere bow, all the while looking directly into the farmer’s eyes for any hint of hidden malice.

"Good day my friend!"

Gunther chirped the greeting like a songbird. His bright and cheerful smile openly gleaming from behind the young Paladin's full beard like the morning sun shining through the trees.

"May I purchase some of your finest milk, cheese and fresh vegetables for my companions and myself?"

Gunther withdrew five gold coins from his hidden pouch and offered them to the farmer as his 3 companions drew near.

"Please allow me to introduce Oriel Blackmoon, Sentinel the Small and Fandil the Wise."

As Gunther's 3 companions introduce themselves, Gunther concentrates upon both the farmer and the barn to discern any possible evil with his gifting.

Depending upon the farmer's response to our initial greeting, we have a list of questions we wish to cautiously inquire of the farmer if he is open to freely converse with us.

Just stopped by to see what was posted here!

I am working on my entry and can work things out where Oriel can pose those questions after I have broken the ice!

That will give me the opportunity to concentrate on the farmer and the barn to determine whether or not an evil presence is close at hand and threatening the party!

Now that I know who is in the group approaching the farmer I can write something up to the point of greeting the farmer and I figure that from there Trip has to post the results of the initial greeting!

Whether amicable or hostile!

It will take me a while to write so I will check back here from time to time!

I am 7 hours ahead of EDST and Friday is a full day for me as I leave early in the morning to cover the hockey league and then go to the office and get back later tomorrow night before I can post anything!

The reason I am going ahead and writing this tonight is because I might not be able to do another writing on Friday night and may have to wait until Saturday night, so I want to get things rolling since I already know the Paladin is assigned to greet the farmer!

Takes me about an hour to walk home from here and gives me plenty of time to ponder what I will write!

After I get settled later I will write the opening move for Gunther to get things rolling and the rest of you can respond in whatever manner!

Trip usually makes a post sometime around midnight or later after I have gone to sleep!

His last post on the Orlane and Q&A threads was after I had gone to sleep!

I was delighted to see the game was underway this morning!

I will make sure I have something written so our DM can facilitate the responses!

When I get home from the office I will write a little something for the Orlane thread about asking the human Ranger and/or the human Druid to approach the farmer!

Greet a human without a circus of weird races [from the farmer's perspective!] accompanying me and I can train my 60' ability to discern evil on him [in case his human appearance is an illusion!] and in the direction of the barn [in case something is lurking inside!]

Am not able to take the time here at the office to write for the Orlane thread so will do it when I get home!

***** Just noticed Darque's post so I can incorporate the invitation for Sentinal [because of his stature!] to have a look around with probably Oriel [the human Ranger!] in case we spring an agressive attack right out of the gate!

Gunther is also curious about the suspicious structure in the NorthEast corner #21 building!

If things check out at farmhouse/barn #4 then I want to proceed to the left/North over the bridge to #25 where the wooded area would be West/to the left of building #25

Not sure about going all the way North to #24 on the road to the Farms, but would turn right/East at building #23 and follow the road around the lake past building #22 to #20 to #19 where I could meet up with whoever else to investigate #21 in the NorthEast Corner of the map!

Whoever wants to join me and who Darque would agree to have come with me are more than welcome to come with me to help me draw the evil out from hiding!

Topic: Duel II AD&D Thread
Subject: Gunther will greet the farmer at the barn on the left

Okay Guys & especially Trip

Need a little help here on when we go ahead and post our movements at An Evil in Orlane thread, but this is what Gunther will do!

Gunther will go greet the farmer at the barn with his weapons sheathed, but will be carrying his shield in case a surprise attack rushes from the barn or beyond.

Gunther will have his right hand free from holding a weapon so he can approach the farmer peacefully to either shake hands or raise his arm in a friendly greeting and when he positions himself in front of the farmer in direct line with the barn Gunther can utilize his 60' evil detection ability to scan the area.

If evil is detected Gunther can sound an alarm with his Elvish tongue to alert Kyuss Crimsonmoon the Elf Ranger who can quickly alert the others!

I think it is important that a human talk to the farmer to set him at ease and a conversation stating our interest to make possible investments in the area, plus our connection with the merchant who organized our party would also be in order to promote an appearance of good will.

We can leave the young lady to the house on the right free of any worry that we are tramping our way over to her house, because the farmer will obviously send word to his neighbors what the strangers are doing in town.

That is if he is truly just an ordinary farmer and not some illusion from an evil source!

Gunther has 2 younger brothers and a sister so he would obviously be inclined to set the farmer at ease with what appears to be his family in the house.

Gunther can always catch up with the rest of the group or agree to meet at a certain place after conversing with the farmer and my Paladin will respectfully decline staying for dinner so as not to be separated too far or too long from the rest of the party members!

What say ye comrades at arms and Darque?

Subject: Monitoring the Registration

Gunther returned to his seat and placed his Blowgun next to his Heavy Crossbow. The young man who had just turned 17 years of age looked to be much older. He stood 6’3”, weighed 170 lbs, sporting jet-black hair that freely cascaded beyond his shoulders when he did not have his locks tied back in a pony tail. His blue eyes protruded from rugged features honed by his years of training and he would be strikingly handsome with a shave and a proper haircut were he to so choose; especially with the appropriate clothing for one of his noble station that he inherited from the lineage of his forefathers. His boyish face was hidden by a full manly beard and his slender, athletic body was deeply tanned from his years of regular and disciplined training outdoors. His deep blue eyes at times glowed like twin sapphires.

The young Paladin checked his gear once again as various adventurers debated within their hearts and minds about joining the party to liberate Orlane from the unknown evil. His Chainmail armor was secure along with his Medium Shield that bore the crest of a golden eagle against a green background with a red lightning bolt held in its beak. His Broadsword and War Hammer thirsted for the taste of battle against evildoers. Their time would come soon enough from the sound of things.

Deathstalker II looked to be a mean fighter with that eerie Battle Axe and one who could be counted on to stand against the evil opposition when others would flee the scene of battle. Gunther gave a word of thanks to his God for this good fortune.

Gunther could sense that the High Elf known as Kitai the Mage was someone who would also be good to have in a struggle of good against evil. Another prayer of thanks was offered to his God as the young Paladin sat brooding and watching who else would make a move to commit to the adventure to Orlane.

A curious character walking with a spear to register for the party had the aura of being at one with nature while possessing the ability to tap into some great hidden power that would be his to command and wield in behalf of the good of the party. Gunther offered yet another prayer of thanks to his God.

The Halfling that scurried up to the table for the bag of Gold was not one that the young Paladin would have chosen for a companion in the coming battle against the forces of evil, but Gunther had learned long ago in his short life that his God was an expert at arranging circumstances utilizing the smallest and strangest of beings to solve the greatest of problems. By faith Gunther breathed another prayer of thanks to his God.

Yet another Halfling that seemed to have spent her time on the seedier side of the street announced her intentions to join the growing party to investigate the strange happenings in Orlane. Gunther took another step of faith in his prayer of thanksgiving to his God, but he also breathed his concern that the adventurers needed more than just thieves or scoundrels to liberate the village from whatever evil had befallen the farm folk.

A few moments later Gunther experienced a greater peace as the Elven Ranger he had greeted with his bag of figs had also approached the podium and registered for the party to liberate Orlane of whatever evil had befallen the village. A joyful praise of thanksgiving welled up within the young Paladin as he expressed his gratitude to his God.

That peace and joy would have to sustain the young Paladin for the moment as yet another Thief type made his way to collect the bag of Gold offered by Balarok Hallfar for any adventurer brave enough to investigate the mystery that had befallen the farming village of Orlane.

Gunther would need more guidance from his God and the young Paladin began to fervently pray to his God that men of strength and character would step forward to enhance the capabilities of the adventurers preparing to journey to Orlane.

Gunther renewed his resolve before his God to continue to quietly watch and pray as the remaining candidates took their time to make their decisions to either walk away or join the party, knowing that his years of training would soon be put to the test.

The young Paladin patiently waits for the opportunity to plan strategy with the company of adventurers once the roster has been determined from among the remaining characters in the room .....

Subject: Weapon arsenal for Gunther

Gunther was initially assigned a Broadsword, Warhammer and Heavy Crossbow [with 40 Heavy Quarrels!] by Trip!

I asked for a Battle Axe and a Blowgun [with 25 barbed darts!] to be added because of the back story I had developed for Gunther and the role playing!

Also have Chainmail Armor and a Medium Shield and Gunther is Ambidextrous, but usually holds the Medium Shield in his left hand while using a weapon in his right hand for battle!

During the march he will probably be carrying the Medium Shield along with the Broadsword for hacking purposes!

All these weapons are key elements for the motivation of Gunther as both a Paladin and an adventurer!

In fact, Gunther is NOT his given name, but the name he has taken as a key element at the very core of his motivation!

If Trip allows some breathing room the first night around the campfire before unleasing the Hordes of Hell against our company of adventurers, I will divulge these key elements so you will have a much better understanding about why Gunther has signed on for this particular adventure!
