Subject: Group 1 Gunther is not Oriel

It is in character for Gunther but not so for any other type of style and if I were role playing any other character other than a Paladin there would be an entirely different way I would approach this!

There is an outside chance [minutely slim but still an outside chance!] that Mayor Ormond could be among the recent missing as of the previous night, which would play to our advantage with this unorthodox approach I am using!

The way this plays out when Trip writes the response will either make Gunther look like a fool or a genius!

My preference is also that we know in advance of possible traps, but I suspect that sooner or later one or more groups will have to withstand a sneak attack from the Evil in Orlane!

Subject: Oriel ... There is a Method to My Madness ...

..... and your response here is indeed part of what the 17 year old Paladin is stirring!

For this particular scenario this is exactly what Gunther has done by design knowing full well that most of the people in Orlane worship the goddess of Agriculture as the farmer Norwell Graven has said.

This burly man may very well be a mere servant to Mayor Ormond and not actually be Mayor Ormond. Norwell did not say that Mayor Ormond was a male!

Burly man could be Mayor Ormond, could be a servant or may even well be the father of Mayor Ormond who could be a Female for that matter!

Motivation here is to disarm the skepticism and cautious fear displayed by the burly man and play upon the extreme respect for authority that Gunther employs to cut to the chase and get to the bottom line of the current problem!

Building a castle is part of what a Paladin will do with his money earned from bounty and discovering hidden treasures during the course of the adventure.

Although Gunther probably would build a castle somewhere else and not in Orlane during the course of this adventure, speaking of building a castle does convey the intent to offer protection and those who hear of this Dream/Intention can either dismiss it as humorous lunacy or as a serious plan of a young idealist.

In this particular case such a presentation may be received as a genuine offer to help someone in authority who will welcome the opportunity to allow well armed strangers to undertake the task of ridding Orlane of the mysterious happenings without trying to get the towns folk to do so.

Furthermore, if there is some type of secret society at work in Orlane and this burly man is involved in that secret society, then it gives the burly man the golden opportunity to direct us to a place where a trap is being laid to get rid of us, but plays right into our hands of what we as adventurers want to do in the first place!

Subject: Group #1 Greeting the burly man

Gunther stepped back two paces and graciously bowed to the burly man who had cautiously addressed the four adventurers.

“It is true sir that we are indeed young and heavily armed,” the young Paladin broadly smiled as he took a reverent step forward. “Me and my companions have journeyed from afar where the rumors abound that Orlane is mysteriously afflicted by the disappearance of its citizens. We are looking for land to one day settle and raise families. We thought such wild rumors were being spread to dissuade honest folks like ourselves from seeking to purchase farmland for our dreams of a bright future.”

Gunther ran the fingers of his right hand through his long hair before gesturing in the direction of his companions.

“My name is Gunther and these are my friends Oriel Blackmoon, Sentinel the Small and Fandil the Wise. We came to Orlane heavily armed in case all those wild rumors about innocent people disappearing were unfortunately all too real and not a wild tale spread by unscrupulous investors who seek to obtain all this rich farmland for themselves.”

Gunther smiled another kindly smile and continued his discourse as he had done with the farmer when they had first arrived in town.

“Norwell and Sarah Graven invited us in for tea and cheese and recommended we speak to Mayor Ormond about our intentions of seeking land. He even thought it quite funny that I am personally looking for land where I can build a castle and help protect my neighbors from any Evil that would try to plague the countryside where I choose to settle down and raise a family. But good Norwell laughed heartily when he told me that the ground of this rich farmland was too soft to bear the weight of the stones it would require to build such a castle of my dreams.”

Gunther rubbed the full beard covering his face and chuckled at the remembrance of Norwell Graven nearly choking on his tea in response to the young Paladin talking about building a castle.

“Norwell Graven said there was no use for a feudal Laird in these parts because the people here live their lives by their own set of rules and the only ruler in this land was Mayor Ormond.”

Gunther looked the burly man square in the eyes and smiled broadly and bowed slightly without breaking eye contact.

“But Norwell Graven did admit that people have indeed been disappearing without explanation these past few months and he welcomed any help we could give!”

Gunther loosed his Medium Shield and laid it between himself and the burly man.

“I serve the True and Living God who gives authority to whosoever He chooses. I came with my friends to personally honor the authority in this town and to ask permission of Mayor Ormond for his blessing as the God appointed authority here to investigate what Evil may have encroached itself upon the good people of Orlane.”

Gunther made a swift and unexpected motion that suddenly freed his Broad Sword from the protective sheathe as the young Paladin laid the Broad Sword across his Medium Shield. Taking a short step backward, Gunther bowed reverently with a secret confidence that his God and the sturdy bow of Oriel Blackmoon would protect the young Paladin from any unexpected hostility while Gunther feigned the appearance of being vulnerable to any sudden attack from any quarter.

“Norwell Graven spoke of a people in Orlane who live by their own rules. I wish to truly understand the rules that your community has chosen to live by. For all I have seen is a people who are ruled by Fear and hide themselves when peace loving strangers such as ourselves come seeking land to build a better future for ourselves and the dreams that motivate young men to build an inheritance for their future heirs.”

Gunther stepped forward and knelt on his right knee with his left leg bent forward to balance himself as he extended his arms forward with the palms of his hands facing up in a non-threatening manner. Then the young Paladin looked the burly man square in the face with a wide grin from ear to ear as he made a slow outward motion with his arms still extended.

“We each carry a map of the town of Orlane and have come to ask Mayor Ormond to identify the buildings and homes where innocent people have mysteriously disappeared. I would also ask for the honorable Mayor Ormond to please identify any hidden caves or structures not pictured on the map that may help us solve this mystery and put a stop to the Evil plague that has befallen the good people of Orlane. I also have another question I would ask the good Mayor Ormond to answer regarding a couple of markings on my map that have aroused my curiosity!”

Still kneeling with his arms graciously extended, Gunther smiled broadly once more as he asked, “Will you help us with our quest kind sir?”

Gunther remains kneeling as he lowers his arms in a reverent bow while keeping his alert eyes fixed upon the burly man. The young Paladin is prepared to swiftly grab his War Hammer with his left hand and his Battle Axe with his right hand at the slightest sign of hostility. Otherwise, Gunther will collect his Broad Sword and his Medium Shield in a non threatening manner in response to a friendly reaction by the burly man, especially if they are invited inside the palatial house of Mayor Ormond.

Subject: Group #1 Knocking at the door is now posted

Okay Guys!

After writing the back story while the group was walking along the East Road, Gunther has now knocked at the door of Mayor Ormond's house!

It is up to the 3 of you to post something at An Evil in Orlane to give Trip some info to include in his follow up post message!

Subject: Group #1 Knocking at the door

Gunther withdrew his map to take mental notes of the actual surroundings as depicted on the crude map as they walked along the East Road, carefully shielding the map from the light rain with his Medium Shield as he attempted to make friendly conversation with the Ranger named Oriel.

“My mother was a Ranger,” spoke the young Paladin after deciding he had peace in his heart to disclose some personal information with his companions in adventure. “Her father was a Fighter and my father and his father were both Fighters.”

Gunther walked on for a few minutes, thoughtfully remembering why he was on this quest, before continuing his story.

“We come from a noble lineage of nobility-warriors, but our names are not important and my own is hidden in case our enemies still have agents searching for any surviving heirs.”

Gunther took a deep breath, exhaling slowly before continuing.

“My mother and her father were in many battles alongside my father and his father before they fell in love and were married. When she became pregnant with me she gave up the warrior life to raise me as a warrior.”

“When I was 3 years old my father and his father died on a fateful quest. My mother’s father was spared the same fate by the healing power of a Paladin.”

Gunther swallowed hard and fought back against the wetness in his eyes.

“He spent his life training me to avenge the deaths of my forefathers against the Evil and Dark Forces of Disorder! He always told me about the valiant battles that he and his comrades who fought by his side waged against those Dark Forces.”

Gunther checked his map again as they passed some buildings and made some mental notes before continuing his tale.

“He told me secret stories about his Dwarve friend named Grunter who wielded a Battle Axe and grunted every time he swung his weapon in the heat of battle. My mother used to laugh her wonderful laugh every time I begged her father to tell me about ‘Gunther! Gunther! Gunther!’ because I was unable to pronounce the Dwarve’s name.”

The young Paladin broke into a wide grin at the remembrance of those happy times during those early years of intense training.

“They never told me about what happened to my mother’s mother or my father’s mother. They always turned their faces away from me when I asked about them. I grew up knowing something terrible had happened. No one had to tell me.”

Gunther gripped the handle of his Broad Sword as he declared, “My quest is to break the curse of death that has befallen the lineage of my forefathers. My true name is hidden from those who were responsible for the deaths of my father and his father.”

The young Paladin looked Oriel in the eye as they approached Mayor Ormond’s palatial home on the lake.

“I adopted the name Gunther to honor the memory of the warrior Dwarve named Grunter during my quest to avenge the deaths of my forefathers against the Evil and Dark Forces of Disorder! I suspect those Dark Forces are at work here in Orlane! It is an honor to have you three with me on this adventure!”

Gunther tucked his map inside his tunic as he surveyed the property belonging to Mayor Ormond. Satisfied that no one was outside, the young Paladin spoke a quick prayer to his God, held his holy symbol in his right hand and gave it a reverent kiss, then walked boldly to the door and knocked with a determined, but polite authority, then waited for an answer.

Gunther prepares to speak a polite greeting on behalf of himself and his companions to whoever answers the door. He will mention in passing that the farmer Norwell Graven advised the group to speak to Mayor Ormond regarding any farmland available for anyone interested in settling in Orlane with the hopes of raising a family. The young Paladin will graciously enter the house without hesitation if invited inside and will say as he enters, “Peace be to this house!”

Subject: Group #1 Gunther will post in a couple hours or so

Hey Guys!

It will take me a couple hours to get my post at An Evil in Orlane. Will be working on a newspaper article about Opening Day in baseball while listening to a game over the internet while I type my Orlane post and take notes!

Am usually at the local hockey league tonight, but with Opening Day today I am at my computer to listen to the Detroit Tigers on Opening Day in Michigan!

I will only be posting what Gunther says or does, so it is up to Oriel, Sentinel and Fandil to write a post also so Trip knows what to script for our group!

Thanks for the pointers/reminders guys!

Subject: Group #1 Questions for Trip

Hey Trip

Couple of quick questions you might be able to answer before you go to work today!

Question #1 is Since Group #1 basically needs to knock on the door at Mayor Ormond's house to get some questions answered, will you be waiting on all the groups #0 - #4 to post before you make another entry at An Evil in Orlane or will you go ahead and update one or more groups as the info comes in?

Specifically my question is whether or not you can go ahead and post the results at An Evil in Orlane regarding anyone answering the door so we can proceed with the meat of the message as to what we are actually doing there? [Without having to wait for the posts from the other groups?]

Question #2 is Our Group #1 has the donkey and the flat cart. Would you please clarify just what exactly we are carrying on the cart please?

Thank You!

Subject: Group #1 at Mayor's House

Okay guys!

I plan to write a post tonight before Trip gets home with a little bit of info in a conversation with Oriel and our other two friends Sentinel and Fandil will probably be listening to the discourse from the wagon.

Gunther will probably go ahead and knock on the door!

Probably post some other info regarding greetings etc.

My plan is to get the Mayor to identify the buildings on our maps and especially to find out if there are any hidden caves of note not on the map!

We all have to post at An Evil in Orlane for Trip to know what we are all doing, so whatever we plan on doing needs to be sorted out here as well as posted at the game thread for Trip to include in his writing!

Gunther will also rely on Oriel to help devise a plan of attack, meaning what direction to take after the Mayor's house and his input as a Ranger as to how to position ourselves!

Also need Sentinel and Fandil to input their assessment of the situation!

Thanks for the admonitions!

I will concentrate at just settling in and enjoying the game!

*** Adding an Edit

Just a couple things for clarification and then I will hold my peace.

The donkey and cart placement thing came as a result of something mentioned by Nomad/Oriel from my group.

Then when it was posted by Nomad asking if Hammer would be typing a post for Group #1 and Trip also stated in a later post that Hammer was the spokesperson for Group #1, I apparently got the wrong impression about what I was supposed to do.

So I went ahead and posted what each member of our group was doing. Since Sentinel was mentioned by Oriel to be in the cart I assumed that Fandil his new Gnome friend would be in the cart as well.

Trip please explain what you mean when you say a certain person is the spokesman for a certain group?

Secondly, my post about how to use the italics was in answer to the question from Nomad, one of my group members, so I should have posted his name in the answer originally [but will follow Trip's admonition to refrain from posting!]

Finally, I addressed the group as a whole [everyone who was gathered near the farmer's house!] asking about where everyone was to meet later at the inns, but there was no concrete response.

Since our group has already posted that we are on our way along the East Road, then we will decide among the 4 of us what to do after the adventure unfolds because from my understanding of the guidelines, none of the other players are allowed to make suggestions about what we are to do later since we are no longer with the group!

I SINCERELY APOLOGIZE Publicly if I have offended anyone who is currently playing and have spoiled their enjoyment of the game thus far, or if I have offended Trip by my previous posts!

It was not my intention to take over the game or dominate the posts! Was just trying to lend some clarity and have apparently muddied the waters!

My Apologies to All Players!

Subject: Remember the Guideline

Trip mentioned that when we are split into groups and separated from one another that we can only address the members of our immediate group in the Q&A Thread, which means the following:

DeathStalker is by himself so he cannot address anyone on the Q&A to make suggestions, express opinions or give warnings!

When Group #1 separates from the combined group of #1 + #2 + #3 then Gunther, Oriel, Sentinel and Fandil can only address messages and opinions in the Q&A to each other!

The only exception from what I understand is addressing questions to Trip!

When we post at An Evil in Orlane or on the Q&A it is obvious that everyone can read all the posts, but when our characters are posting over at An Evil in Orlane we have to post as though our characters know nothing about what is transpiring with the other separated groups!

Like how Nomad posted over at An Evil in Orlane and made his comments about what his character thought about DeathStalker leaving the group and going off on his own. Oriel has no idea what DeathStalker is currently doing, but he does express his thoughts to himself about what he thinks of the situation!

If a plan was not posted specifically at An Evil in Orlane regarding which inn(s) to go to at the end of the day, then those suggestions opportunities are now obsolete as far as Group #1 is concerned as we are already walking along the East Road to Mayor Ormond's house!

Subject: How to make paragraphs in italics

When you are posting at An Evil in Orlane and you want to make one or more paragraphs in italics you do the following:

At the beginning of the paragraph right next to the first letter of the first word [without a space in between!] you type the following:

At the end of the paragraph or the last paragraph you again type the following right next to the last letter of the last word or punctuation mark [without a space in between] you type the same thing:

Example of a simple sentence in italics is:

This is the way it is done!

Took me a while to figure it out thanks to Wretch and a lot of patience when he was chatting me through the procedure!

you type an arrow pointing to the left <

then you type in a lower case i

then you type in an arrow pointing to the right >

you do this at the beginning of the paragraph and at the end of the paragraph, hopefully this explanation shows because when I typed it out it did not show up in the message!

Subject: Gunther on the move ... Group #1

Precious time was slipping away and even more precious daylight was burning. Gunther waited for a reply to his questions, but the long agonizing moments were becoming almost too great to bear. He watched as the rest of the group seemingly argued among themselves as to a specific course of action.

His blades thirsted to avenge the deaths of his father and his father’s father against the evil that tried to supplant the good in the land, but the young Paladin had long ago tempered himself with the disciplines necessary to accomplish his personal goals while possessing a lifestyle of obedience to serving the True and Living God.

Gunther took several more steps and prayed to his God, asking forgiveness for his impatience and to lead, guide and direct his way to make the best choices to accomplish his goals of fighting against the Evil in the land that opposed the forces of Good.

The young Paladin recalled the words of advice that his maternal grandfather had given him countless times during his years of training: “Not every battle is won by the strength of your sword. Many battles are won by the strength of your brain!”

This was such a time to rely on the strength of his brain. Gunther would follow the road East to Mayor Ormond’s house on the lake. Using the strength of his brain was vital to asking Mayor Ormond to identify the key locations on the map that Gunther and his companions were each carrying. A warrior is well prepared before entering a battle and knowing which buildings on the map represented where the people had disappeared and what exactly each building on the map represented was a vital key to be prepared for any battle that was inevitable to embroil the adventurers at a moments notice.

Besides the locations already noted on the map, Mayor Ormond would certainly be privy to any knowledge of anything not drawn on the map that may provide hidden clues to the mysterious forces at work in the surrounding area of Orlane.

Gunther walked a bit further and turned to see if anyone would follow his lead. He noticed that Kyuss, Haiden, Stings and Valerus had banded together again and were pointing to the others that they would head North.

It was obvious that Aelbric, Doogan, Katai and Elkin were regrouping and discussing some type of strategy among themselves. Hopefully that strategy would include finding their absent companion Garrus who had obviously grown impatient with the proceedings at the farm and struck out on his own to quench his thirst for adventure.

Gunther did not fault the actions of DeathStalker to want to do something instead of standing around and waiting, he only questioned the wisdom of such action in going off alone at the present time when there was so little known about the town and the fear that was obviously gripping the people of Orlane.

Finally Gunther noticed that Sentinel was climbing back down the tree to join Oriel and Fandil, but what were they doing now?

Gunther was doing a slow burn inside as he realized that his companions were bringing the donkey and wagon with them to join the young Paladin on the way to Mayor Orland’s house. Gunther was inclined to make a rapid beeline to Mayor Ormond’s house, but seeing the donkey and wagon being coaxed along by Oriel made Gunther slowly realize the wisdom of his God in arranging the circumstances to give them the appearance of a group of strangers who were in Orlane looking for possible land to purchase and at some point in the future to settle and raise families.

After offering another prayer of consecration and thanksgiving to his God, the young Paladin started walking along the East road at a much slower pace, allowing his companions with the donkey and wagon to overtake him and accompany Gunther to Mayor Ormond’s house on the lake.

Gunther and Group 1 will make their way to Mayor Ormond’s house as quickly as traveling with a donkey and wagon will allow. They will take note of the buildings and surrounding area as they make their way to their destination. Just as people looking for land and homes to buy would do, although they continue to their destination as quickly as possible given the circumstances of the donkey and wagon.

They will be courteous to anyone they meet and mention they have business with Mayor Ormond and politely ask if they are heading in the right direction. If pressed about their business, the group will be as polite as possible and mention asking about available land to possibly purchase to settle and raise families, but the group want to meet the person who is governing the town before making a final decision on purchasing any land.

Gunther is especially relying on Oriel to be ready in case of any unexpected or unprovoked attack and he is especially relying upon Sentinel and Fandil to take note of everything they see for later discussion when planning a course of action, plus utilizing their special talents in case of an ambush.

*** Sentinel and Fandil hide in the wagon to secretly watch all proceedings on each side of the wagon while Oriel and Gunther walk on either side of the donkey where they can discuss strategy and be ready for any attacks.***

Finally, in case his question about which inn to go after meeting with Mayor Ormond has gone unanswered before resuming his walk down the East road, Gunther and company will just make a decision about accommodations for the night dependent upon what transpires at Mayor Ormond’s house.
