Subject: Brewing a Jerky Stew

My Fair Lady had become a fair nightmare as far as cooking for the captain and the crew was concerned.

BrewStirr Hammer had found it to be a simple enough task to be hired aboard the My Fair Lady as one of the two cooks employed for the adventure cruise.

The Dwarf had become accustomed to the usual jokes about "Stirring the Brew" that his name elicited among the company of men and assorted rogues.

His fiery red eyes did not betray his true feelings as the 4'11" 140lb 45 year old Dwarf went about his business in the ship's kitchen along with his Halfling cooking partner that fate had seemingly thrown them together in a mercilessly humorous fashion.

They had long since run out of the proper seasonings and the jerky was subjected to the boiling waters mixed with vinegar and ale and whatever the two "short-order cooks" were able to blend in the pot. Occasionally they had the good fortune of snagging a fish or a clump of seawood to flavor the jerky stew, but BrewStirr had refused to add any of his own flavorful possessions to make the stew more palatable.

His long dark brown hair was pulled back so as not to accidently fall into the stew pot and his long darker brown blackish beard contained the sweat of his labor which seemed to miraculously prevent the sweat of his brow from contaminating the contents of the brewing pot.

Being 45 years young, BrewStirr Hammer had just become of age as an adult, but he had enough smarts to conceal his abilities as a Wizard/Evoker from not only the captain and his crew, but from the Halfling as well.

He could have creatively used his spell casting abilities to enrich the flavor and nutrition of the jerky stew in some manner, but he chose to remain merely a "short-order cook" who was but another face among the masses of adventure seekers and soldiers of fortune who desired to make a great or small fortune among the Elves.

Nonetheless, BrewStirr Hammer was doing his best to provide a decent and tasty meal, especially with the Halfling providing a challenge every now and then with the choice of flotsam and jetsam that he tried to add to the jerky stew.

I am running out of time to further respond tonight as I have a couple more adventures to respond to!

Bear with me and probably on Monday I will PM some particulars so you have some idea of what you are working with before the ship reaches port wherever we are going!

The Mercenary had been expecting the inevitability of this intrusion, but such action was to be expected when Septimus was involved in the situation.

Although inwardly annoyed at the timing of his intrusion, the Mercenary chose to let the recovering man enter.

“I wish to thank you, though perhaps you would have it otherwise”, Septimus murmured quietly, with a curt little nod in the Mercenary's direction.

“If it was not for your healing prowess I would almost certainly have died”. He smiled at the absurdity in that statement. “Not that that would not have solved quite a few things in the eyes of society. Wars, crimes." He shrugged. “You do know the risks involved with aiding fugitives from the law, my anonymous friend?” He finally made eye contact, his gaze twinkling with sardonic humour and curiosity.

“You are one of us now, are you not?”

He bowed very slightly.

“Captain Septimus Sandalwood, at your service, sir”, he introduced himself softly.

“For what it is worth, I am quite glad to be alive”.

The Mercenary glared at his uninvited guest and put a finger to his lips as he looked in the direction of his weapons in the hammock and whispered, "My family is asleep ... but you may remain if you do not disturb their slumber!"

He motioned Septimus to join him at a small table over in the opposite corner of the cabin where two sturdy wooden chairs sat opposite one another.

The Mercenary took his preferred seat and nonchalantly rolled a cigarette, lit it and began smoking with deliberate drags, refusing to offer Septimus the same pleasure.

He did, however, bring forth one of the bottles that the ship's captain and the kitchen crew had so graciously bestowed upon the Mercenary to enjoy with his meals.

"This ain't sippin' whiskey," whispered the Mercenary as he pulled the cork out of the fresh bottle with his teeth and took a long drink himself before offering the bottle to Septimus, "but rum seems to be the only strong drink available on this voyage!"

The Mercenary took another long puff on his cigarette and blew the smoke in the direction of Septimus, but slightly above his head and not directly in his face.

"I know who you are Captain Septimus Sandalwood," the Mercenary responded matter of factly as he placed his pistol on the table in a non-threatening manner, "and you need not be alarmed by The PeaceKeeper here! She just wants a closer look is all."

Then leaning forward the Mercenary raised his voice a bit louder [but still not loud enough to wake his slumbering family] and snarled, "You must have forgotten me Septimus ... my name is Rex ... Rex the Reckless!"

Am leaving for the hockey tournament in a couple of hours after I finish here at the office, then am at hockey all day Friday and again on Saturday!

Sunday is my day off and I will probably not post again in Lantan until Sunday!

Not enough time to devote to gaming until at least late Saturday night, but will not post in Lantan until Sunday!

A man has to sleep sometime!

By the way, I floated the storyline past Throwing Spiders in a PM for her approval before writing and posting!

Will be too busy the next couple of days with covering the ice hockey tournament, so hopefully everyone can proceed without my posting again until Sunday!

MOD EDIT: deleted the repeats of this message

DOUBLE MOD EDIT: fixed the bolding issues in your game post too!

Subject: Over the Topaz Bridge and into the Green Maw

Ashlands, Slith Sagonissra
Dephosi, The Topaz Bridge
Febre, Morning

“We are coming up on the district of the Green Maw… Be at the ready.”

Draygo'Solarr dropped back a pace or two to confer with Cyrus as the four guardsmen tightened their grip on their weapons, senses straining for any indication of unseen observers or the slightest hint of hidden danger.

"We be far enough away from the prying ears of the enemies of my adopted father," the young Golden Dragon Shaman spoke in a friendly, but subdued tone, "and these be loyal guardsmen who have protected me in recent years from my own foolishness among the Skoarn."

Draygo'Solarr did not need to hear the question voiced by his newfound comrade in quest. He could feel it when he had bowed comically to the guardsmen when they had first entered the room earlier in the day.

"We play a game for the hidden listeners," explained Draygo'Solarr matter of factly as he drew abreast of Cyrus and matched the young adventurer stride for stride as he quietly surveyed the surroundings and the body language of his faithful guardsmen. "I play the part of the Elven buffoon and my guardsmen play the part of the displeased Skoarn who disdain the very thought of having to escort me wherever I choose or am ordered by my adopted father to go."

"The game we play is a tragi-comedy of sorts," the young Golden Dragon Shaman continued with a laugh. "Theirs is the tragedy of being saddled with such a pampered Elven whelp and the comedy is my buffoonery and how my guardsmen must react to it all with nothing more than a straight face."

"But out of the reach of prying eyes and ears we are all equals," explains Draygo'Solarr as he follows the lead of the guardsmen leading the party, while swiftly checking the body language of the other three in the disguised battle formation. "I would gladly give my life for theirs as they would gladly surrender their lives for mine ... or yours friend Cyrus!"

"But the truth of the matter is simply this," concludes Draygo'Solarr as he looks directly at his friend Cyrus for added emphasis, "My guardsmen will not allow either my life ... or yours ... to be forfeit this day ... or any other day! So if you fall into the company of the accursed Green Dragon Shamans, simply tell them that you were being banished to the Black Tar Lakes along with the Elven buffoon as punishment for questioning the validity of the authority of the Golden Dragon Shamans who hold sway over the political arena of all the assembled Skoarn! You may find such explanation reason enough for the Green Ones to spare your life for their own sordid purpose!"

Draygo'Solarr is acting outwardly nonchalant as the party proceeds, but inwardly is preparing himself for a defensive reaction should the party be attacked or challenged by anyone or anything in their path.
