"If you wish to hear more about the spell, the manager can answer your questions, as he is the one who cast and continues to maintain the spell. He is inside the main office just outside the arena. You'll also find that your chamber to prepare in is on that side of the arena, as for time, you have until the sand in the hourglass falls."

Manalagna Hammer strokes his silver beard with his right hand as he ponders the appearance of the hourglass, then watches as Xira walks to her chamber, before nodding once more to the Charismatic Orc before making a beeline to the main office to confer with the arena manager.

Manalagna Hammer did not flinch nor show any signs of relief as the announcer replied,"There is a spell placed over the grounds of this arena that ensure that while unconsciousness is unavoidable, our battles never result in actual death. As for house rules, unfortunately the manager is in constant debate about such rules with all the competetors and so none ever get laid out. As such, besides the 'one on one' rule, anything goes."

The Dwarven Druid measured the announcer's words and weighed the possibilities of the various shades of truth spoken as to whether or not his life was in danger.

After a few fleeting moments he decided that his destiny lay far beyond the confines of this particular arena, so he would take the Charismatic Orc at his word of face value that this Sand Dance would be as it was presented ... providing an opportunity for Manalagna Hammer to test his mettle against his mysterious opponent.

He nods his understanding grimly.

"Why do you try to flatter me? There's the truth, and then there's the twisted truth, and you make it sound like I did more than I did."

The announcer's face goes a bit pale, then he whispers to Manalagna, "I've been trying to explain that to her for some time now; she just doesn't get it."

Manalagna Hammer bows once more.

His thoughts were upon the possibilities of twisted truth. Was there really a spell to stay the hand of death between the combatants?

He had come too far to back out now ... and the curiosity of why this woman seemed to go unchallenged by any other challengers for so long could only be assuaged by confronting her in the battle arena.

So Manalagna Hammer refused to be intimidated by the woman's words.

He stares long and hard at Xira.

Then turning to the Buffed Orc, Manalagna Hammer enquires, "Where do I prepare for this Sand Dance ... and how much time do I have to select my battle gear?"

Topic: New Forgotten Realms Game(just checking interest)
Subject: Just curious ...

..... because I started playing these D&D adventures on these boards a couple of months ago and all the adventures I have joined are DMed by different people.

A couple of them are first timer DMs so I have no problem with that aspect as I have to rely on the DM or someone else to help me create my character.

I chose to get into several games because I soon discovered that a few [sometimes many!] days pass before an update is posted and I was wanting to play on a consistent basis.

So when I find an interesting storyline and some players I have not gamed with in any other games [plus getting recruited to play in a couple adventures!] then I consider playing if I can get inspired by a particular character.

I live overseas [American working at a newspaper in Doha, Qatar] and in July and part of August I will be on vacation in the States.

The vacation may severly curtail any consistent posting for a few weeks, but hopefully I will be able to purchase some D&D books to help me with my role play on these boards when I return!

So anything that might pique my interest to play is what I am fishing for!

So I guess I should ask about any Class or Character limitations and what we are able to create for the first level?

Subject: What is a Name?

Rex eyed Septimus suspiciously as he cautiously approached the Mercenary, yet he paused long enough to allow him to speak concerning whatever matter was obviously weighing heavily upon him after Shaben's bizarre exit and his hasty conversation with the ship's captain.

“The captain has declined to take us to the Council. We are being taken to Athkatla as planned, and the silly twit has obviously refused to negotiate with me ... I was given a name apparently left by Shaben himself, although I no idea what it means, one Mr Corfsand ... I doubt it has any meaning to you?”

Rex calmly drew his whip back with a fluid motion [like a fly fisherman would cast his bait] and let loose with a lightning quick crack of the whip that would have sent a lesser man running for his life.

“Forgive me ... if I have interrupted your thoughts, or have angered you in any way. I seem to have that effect on people ... It seems that we have never met under more ... felicitous circumstances. If and when you wish, I would like speak of the time our paths once crossed, for it is a time that may affect you as well as I ... We have the time.”

Rex slowly coiled his whip and placed it back in its familiar place among the rest of his weapons. Perhaps it was time for a heart to heart talk. His family was resting comfortably, enjoying the fresh sea air, while a troubled man stood before the Mercenary, trying his best to be friendly to someone ... anyone ... after losing his friend Shaben ... so unexpectedly!

"What is a Name? mused Rex as he motioned for Septimus to accompany him to the back of the ship, beyond the catapult where the two could have a better view of the beautiful water as the ship made its way towards Athkatla.

"Take this Mr Corfsand for instance ... his name could even be CorkSand ... a bottle stopper in the sand ... a dirty man ... but most likely this name is but a disguise ... for I have found in my business ... that certain types of men ... and women ... are known to others by a name they wish ... those others to forget ... so this Corfsand ... if that is truly his name ... may very well be someone else from your past ... or mine ... who wishes to conceal his true identity from those he may have betrayed ... Do You Agree?"

Subject: Arena Rules?

Fonhinqann
Gladiataor Arena
Six Hours before Twilight

Manalagna Hammer was a bit suspicious of Xira's bandaged hands and her overall bleak appearance.

Could those very hands within the bandages be her weapons of choice and the reasons for her arena success?

The Dwarven Druid politely extricated himself from the friendly grip of the Charismatic Orc and faced Xira, politely bowing as he said, "I salute your arena prowess ... oh Champion of Champions ... the Mighty Xira ... I am but a stranger in a much stranger land. The world where I come from revels in the granduers of arena combat. The loss of life is common in those arenas, but immortality is granted to those who graduate from the ranks of the arena gladiators! I have forsaken all that glory and promise to make a new life and destiny here. What ... pray tell ... are the arena rules in this place ... and is this a battle to the death ... or do we spare one another's lives?"

Manalagna Hammer listened intently to the announcer as the roar of the crowd drowned out his own bold introduction. The Charismatic Orc had placed such an emphasis on the words "... expensive for the contender, and that’s why few people challenge her these days ... I suggest you don't use any really expensive weapons." ... that Manalagna Hammer got the chillingly distinct impression that were he to lose this battle that he would forfeit his weapons and belongings to this ..."Xira, the defending champion!"

"So Then ... to the Victor Belongs the Spoils?"

Manalagna Hammer paused long enough for another possible roar of the crowd to die down and for the Buff Orc to respond in some Charismatic fashion to the Dwarven Druid's boldly stated question.

He also pondered upon the declaration from the Buff Orc that "... you cannot summon any allies ... this is a one on one battle." and realized with a wry grin that Takas would have to sit out this Sand Dance, as Manalagna Hammer liked to refer to the Arena Battles when he was dueling on the arena sands of Alastari, before his veteran manager Hammer had deposited him upon this world by utilizing one of his Elven Orbs of Transport that had opened the Time/Space/Dimensional Realm corridors a few years past to convey Manalagna to this particular world.

Too bad that Hammer did not allow Manalagna Hammer to keep one of the veteran manager's Elven Orbs of Transport for himself, as this seemed to be a situation where one of those EOTs would have come in quite handy!

Manalagna Hammer conveyed a silent message to his faithful and trustworthy Takas to refrain from joining the battle. This Xira was only to be Dwarf Bait for this particular Sand Dance! Takas would have to be content to wait for a future battle!

The Dwarven Druid did not flinch as he raised his head to look full in the face of the Buff Orc and with a competitive defiance against the odds that seemed to be stacked against the diminutive challenger boldly questioned, "What Is My Reward for Defeating Your Defending Champion ... This Xira?"

Fonhinqann
Gladiator Arena
Six hours before Twilight

"Now, for those of you that have not had the chance, if you wish to enter the Elite Tournament, then come forth onto the battlefield now!"

Manalagna Hammer of Clan Hammer did not hesitate to answer the challenge!

The 5'5" 150lb Dwarf made his way through the crowd with all the excitement and anticipation that a 50-year-young Dwarf could muster. The sunlight shone majestically from his long silver hair and silver beard, but there was no mistaking the competitiveness than shone even more brightly from his Blazing Red Eyes.

Manalagna Hammer was uncertain whether or not there were any "House Rules" regarding the use of one's own weapons and armor in an arena challenge such as the announced Elite Tournament, because he had only arrived at the Gladiator Arena after the preliminary rounds of the previous tournament were well underway.

Being of the Neutral Good Alignment and Belief in the Laws of Nature, Manalagna Hammer merely saw this as an opportunity to utilize and exercise the Striking style of gladiatorial combat that he had been trained to fight with those long years ago in the distant arenas of Alastari, from whence he had been transported along the corridors of the Time/Space/Dimensional Realms to this land by his veteran manager Hammer, to fulfill an undisclosed purpose of prophesied destiny of resisting and fighting an unknown evil that would someday threaten the lives of all who lived in this realm.

He merely answered the challenge from the Charismatic Orc in the Loin Cloth as he himself had been dressed for battle during his journey: wearing his Rhino Hide, carrying his Caster Shield upon his left arm, holstering his Flaming Scimitar on his left side and walking forward with determined purpose with his Moldering QuarterStaff gripped confidently in his right hand ... boldly declaring when the Charismatic Orc finally recognized the odd looking Dwarven Druid as a participant in the Elite Tournament and thus asking him to state his name and where he was from, for all to hear and to cheer or to jeer:

"My name is Manalagna Hammer of Clan Hammer. I come from a land far away known as Alastari. A place I may never see again, because I have come to fight against a coming evil that threatens to destroy this world."
