Subject: If you want to stay long term, then it can happen.............

As the story goes, from what I see, Cor and Ulthok are original characters. Both have had close calls but have come back. Cor went evil and Ulthok was killed. Now cor has been saved and Ulthok healed. So as long as we have a Cleric or such that can raise the dead you always have a chance.

The changing of character seems to have more to do with the writers and not the characters. Players lose interest or are not able to continue so their character is replaced. In my case I was lucky to take over Ulthok and keep him around.

I like this story and game, I'm hoping to be in it a long time. I've only scratched the surface of what Ulthok can do and who he is.

So don't give up before we've started, there is still a major war to win.

Subject: Short Introductions.........

Ulthok had no problem determining the direction Sirene was going, he just followed the smell. As three figures appeared from the gloom the enchantress released her spell and greeted the trio. “Fair be our meeting, for our hearts are light and our swords sheathed, we hold peace in our hands and its light guides us. My name is Sirène Talà Melete. Forgive my sudden appearance. It is not often you find friendly faces in the dark place of this world.”

A bedraggled but comely female Halfling emerged. “My name is Valene Beestinger, my companions and I have escaped from hill giants. I am afraid we may bring trouble to you, as they are most undoubtedly pursuing us.” She glanced back the direction they had come from. “I do not know how many may have followed.”

Releasing the will of spirit from his ring Ulthok appeared next to Sirene. “And I am Ulthok Rydenham , at your service." Sliding his pack off his back the mage opened it and withdrew some clean shirt, breeches and a belt. “My Lady.. if it pleases you, these may fit you. And if I may be so bold, allow me to remove the soil of your captivity?” With that mage utter the words of a simple cantrap of "clean" removing the grime and smell from the maiden.

From behind them the Cleric leader reacted to hearing of giants. "Giants ya say lass? Well now that is a happy coincidence for I am always looking for giants." Cor readied his axe, "If you will just stand aside I am sure that my sword swinging companions and I can deal with such things easy enough." Kenji, Maggot; would you care to join me in a little melee with said giants?" Looking to the others of the party he added, "Keep an eye on our new friends, who knows what trouble might pop up."

“Well it looks like we don’t rest, that Cleric might need a little help with those giants of yours Miss Beestringer, if you’ll excused me……. Oh there are weapons and such back there, choose what you need, we may need your help yet today.”

Smiling pleasantly Ulthok bowed and followed Cor.

Posts are good. This is an a well oiled group. It is still a bunch of ME's and not WE's. Remember the steps of team building. We are in "Storming". We still have to find out about each other, the real folks.

I've let out some clues about Roger, so we'll see where stuff goes.

I'd think we should offer up the items left in the bag of holding in game, that will make sence in the story. They can pick and then write what was chosen to match what Tann offered. Either Ulthok or Magget could speak up and make the offer, even Cor as a gesture to get more armed combatents to go after the giants. Ulthok might have some clothing the size to fit Valene. I'll check my character sheet. Although he isn't used to "dressing" females.

I'll get a little bit up tonight, got go dig the garden now.
Ulthok will appear close behind Sirene and introduce himself. Not sure if he'll follow Cor, but the Cleric may need a little magic backup.

Subject: The First....................

The party rode on in relative silence. The Khord that had talked with such bravado while nursing his tankard was now riding passively. The mage that had challenged him held her tongue. The air was filled with distrust. There was nothing that these had in common, they weren’t even from Drannon, why would the care, why hadn’t the towns people come out to protect a countryman. The idealistic young man felt he was understanding more why he had been sent. Could he use this group to help his mission?

After about an hour they approached the wagon Tal had left. There were several men rummaging through it. The men saw them and one called out, “Hold there! We found this first so this here is ours.”

Straightening in his saddle Roger placed a cold stare on the man, placing as much authority as he could in his voice he addressed the scavengers. “You may have found it, but it was never lost. This is sole possessions of a man who’s daughter was stolen by the Rokash. We have come looking for clues to aid us in our hunt for the girl. I would hope that the men of Drannon would remember their honor and not steal from the unfortunate.” Placing his hand on his sword he continued, “ In the name of the Emperor stand aside and let look for clues.”

Subject: Fly Now, Live Now........................

Sirene conveyed the scene of an undulating landscape, a vast expanse of crawling slimy gray flash eating slugs. Fighting through that throng would be a challenge and the small mage was glad he’d prepare an array attack spells. Ulthok was armed with Fire and Ice. Freezing and frying would be how he’d help cut a path , but with so many seeming mindless predators would they be over whelmed by the sheer numbers.

It was time they had to move, prepared to swing open the temple doors the party called to the Valar that it time for her make her run, setting events in motion. Even as Althena took her first step on to the stairs the massive building started to tremble and quake. A great rumbling and cracking sound from every corner rang out as the destruction spell Althena’s father had placed upon the temple raced through its walls. The rapid destruction surprised the party as great chunks fell about them. The assailing debris now hampered Althana run . When Sirene turn back to help, Ulthok would let her go alone. Seeing the enchantress changing form into a great bird the mage knew flight would be their best option to gather up the Valar and escape. As Sirene took to the air a small feather landed at Ulthoks feet, picking it up he smiled and cast Fly upon himself and followed the Elven maiden up off the floor. Ulthok was exhilarated by ease and grace of eagle and followed form as he kept close. This time his hunch proved better, he was there to help when a falling bolder struck Sirene and cause her to falter.

Once more in control the mighty eagle was able to snatch up Althena an speed its way to the temple doors where now a rest of the party was mounting a massive Red Dragon that burst open the doors to achieve their exit. Flying under Althena Ulthok supported her as climbed to the back of the eagle and there took a secure hold. The three swooped out the door and up into the air as the temple behind them imploded into a massive creator.

The party now flow over the ravenous slugs that were dying in droves as the earth rented itself, caverns opening and the slug fell into the holes to be crushed by the shifting earth and stone. Ulthok concentrated on his flight as the glided over the forest, the small canyon and onto the ledge they had used for rest just days before. The Fly spell is a wondrous thing but Ulthok knew the danger lay in the time it would stay with him, it never acted the same way twice in a row.

They were safe or at least they were away from temple. Landing the party regroup and Ulthok lead them back into the tunnels from where they had come. A ways in they found the original path blocked; stone loosened the quake had cover it. But a fissure in the wall had opened not far from the collapse. The party had little choice so passed through into a new tunnel.

An uneventful yet tiring trek lead them to a large chamber where Cor deemed it was a proper place to stop and rest. The party took the Cleric direction, sitting about and engaging in idle conversation. After a time Maggot screwed up his face and said to Ulthok,"I since a smell of cooked meat and someone else not of us. Kinda like somethings but yet unlike anything." Then Sirene stood, “There are some people heading towards us,” she added soberly after Maggot had spoken. “Niamedris senses three people. He thinks they aren’t evil, but…” Sirène left the rest unspoken. They had all been fooled by Alasdair. “I’ll go ahead and check.” Paceing off to the darkness Sirene faded from view as she cast invisibility on herself.

Heaving a sign Ulthok looked off in the direction of the beautiful enchantress, “Oh there she goes again, last time we had intruders and I followed her I ended up like boiled soup. Oh well at least this time I can walk.” With that the mage stood following the direction the Elf had taken; winked a bit of will into his and vanished too.

Ooops, my bad, you're right about the spell progression.

What can we do to neutralize the bowman?

If all of our archers draw on their archer then we can tell them all to lower their weapons.

I still think the threat and bribe might work.

Low level (2nd level with maybe one 3rd lv mage character; only one spell caster, other than cleric). No magic items. You can pick our your type of armor (nothing higher than Chainmail) and one main weapon for free; you will get 100 gp ea. for miscellaneous equipment.

Well I don't see these folk as being willing to join us. Does our mage have a hold person spell to cast on the bowman?

I'll have Roger ask the mage quietly.

If we hold him and then we draw our bows and swords and order the rest to put down their arms, we can avoid killing them. I'll have Roger address them then. When he sits up straight and projects his voice there is a regal air to his manner.

He'll tell them of the owner's plight and that this is all that the man has left in life. He'll ask their names and offer them 25 gold each to return the weagon. They will be paid when the party returns and if they steal these goods they will be hunted down.

So what'cha think?

Well here's the list I sent Tann. I added the Scoll of Creation with the idea of sometime making a Ring of Free Action. I still have not found what the "Dragon Sight" does, but it sounded cool.

The draggers, Stars and whip just seem like thief weapons.

2 +3 Daggers
12 +1 Throwing Stars
Whip of Entanglement
Ring of Protection +2 (For the saving throw improvement)
Potion of Dragon Sight
Wand of Frost
Oil of Fiery Burning
3 diamonds
Scroll of Creation

I'm not really greedy, these are all just really cool.

The party honored their dead and each member treated moment in their own way. As these brave friends had served the group now the items left behind would continue to aid in the quest, only in new hands. Ulthok chose carefully those items that he could use the assist group. The thief had no greed to simply add to his treasures. As the group rested the mage took time to prepare spells may aid them as they would once more seek the sword.

After dually resting Ulthok lead the group back the upper chamber, this time seeking that area darken area where he free his brother.

With great care Ulthok searched the darkness and revealed what appeared to be the outline of hidden door. To him amazement instead remaining hidden the produced letters. MAET SACIREMA SYOBWOC SALLAD. The mage had not prepared to read magi, but luckily the Enchantress stepped forward and deciphered the letters. Sirene caused the letters to rearrange but they were still in a language they colud not understand.

Althena then voiced what was written for it was her native tongue, “Only the last of the Valar may open”. As the theif double check for traps Althena pushed the door and the long unvisited room was revealed. Moving to checkthe room Ulthok was halted with an abrupt “Ulthok STOP” . Althena took charge, “Everyone please move back, I feel the sword somehow within.”

Moving into the Althena found a body clutching the sword. “Oh Father” she murmured loud enough for all to hear “so this is where you came all those years ago, but why.”
The blade was gripped in her father’s hands, the red and black blade glowing and the green gem at the base of it’s hilt beating in rhythm as if that of a heart.
Here was what they had come for, died for and fought hard to reach.... The Steel Maiden.

Taking a deep breath she moved quickly reaching within her pack she bought forth a rune scribed sheath and magic enhanced wrappings. Wasting no time for fear of the evil of the sword now possibly released she grabbed it expecting a rush of evil to assail her, but instead she felt only a small portion of the evil contained within, her immunity real. Sheathed and wrapped she placed it upon her back and under her cloak much as Maggot had done with the former sword he had carried for so long.

When sword was secured Althena noticed a letter in the pocket of her fathers robe. Taking the note the party left the room closing the door. Moving away to read the letter the Valar was surprised to find it addressed to her. Although the message was personal there needed information she shared with the party. Time had outside the mountain had past faster than realized. Though they had seemingly been there a few days, those waiting for them had lived a year. Also they must leave quickly for the temple will start to crumble as the leave the chamber.

Hearing this Ulthok exclaimed, “ Even though we were not treated as guests, we should leave by the front door. Compared to these blasted roaches those slugs out there should not be such a challenge. Anyone got a salt shaker?”
