I'd say the rumble, dust and debris from the ground collapse has already put them on alert. If they weren't the door guards they most likely would have come up to see if food was available. So there isn't any surprise to anything as I see it.

Subject: Zap and Chop..........
We haven't heard from Tann yet for ideas or possible actions.
Maybe these thing don't see well in the dark. If we knock out the light and sneak up on them Lum and Rhys could get within 20 feet. They glow so we can see they.
Rhys zaps the chain lightening and then Lum goes in with the Great Axe. Mairead could then sneak around the edge to the doors and get behind them while the battle rages.
I'm not too worried right now about being quiet in battle, we got to take them out to move on.
Would like to know what Tomiki can do to help.
Any thoughts?

Subject: Defencive Too.....
Spells tp protect your partners can be good too. Lending aid or making others stronger are good actions. Spells like Wall of Force put a barrier between you and the enemy.
So just review what your character can do to help out.
If the creatures are weakened then maybe Lum can hack them up with his axe before they hurt him too much.

Subject: So It Begins...........
Lum leads the party down the stair. "This don't look like a natural cave, it be made by someone. That be good,could be good stuff here." Traveling down about 30 yard the big Orc raises his arm to signal stop and quiet. Below he sees an open area lit by a beacon. Another set of stair are on the other side of the area with set of doors, but they seem protected by two large creatures.
"Hmmm," he whispered. " Looks like a good find..see the doors, but them are protected by them big bugs,,Don't know much of them only them are hard to kill,..them got poison bite in front and fire shoot from rear." Lum looked the party, "We need to get through those doors,you got any ideas besides go down and chop them up?"

I will get a post up about us on the stairs and what we see.
I have Lum tell what he knows of the Bugs. Then the rest can pass along the information in game before we reach the bottom and have to face the bugs. We call state what we CAN do and then we can do another round of posts as to what we will do.

Subject: We Don't Know what We Don't Know.......
As players we can share information but our characters can't act on it unless it is shared in game between characters. To discuss and plan is one thing but doing stuff must be in game.
Say one character is going to cast a fireball. They had better let the party know so they can prepare or take cover. The party could get caught it the fire. The players might discuss it ahead of time to see if it is a good idea and remind the caster player to have the caster character inform the party.
In our game our characters know more about each other than the players do right now. They have been together for a year so abilities and spells are known and could be suggested. As players we don't have each others character sheets so we don't know what each of us can do.
So our Spirit girl casting something from her big stick is new the players but Lum has likely seen her do something with before.
So in game Lum might only say,"Hmm..them tough to kill."
Talking is a free action.

Well Lum would have to get in close to do damage. Chop and run. Stay away from the fangs but chop it hard.
Lum couldn't remember anything additional just that they are hard to kill.
Making a cave in on them might cover the door too. Did the other make any rolls for for more information?
Our Rogue could try to sneak up behind one, hope it doesn't fart fire.
So who is going to be the brains of this group?

I think I heard you say you had pulled a double shift? I can imagine that you must be very tired." The last bit was said so softly that, to his tired and dazed mind, it might just sound like a hypnotic suggestion; lulling him into a deeper desire to get some sleep as soon as possible.
"Maybe you should retire," Miraan suggested, "we will have plenty of opportunity to talk further. I mean it isn't a very large ship after all." She grinned a little at the last part and waited for him to make his decision.
"You are an astute observer; a good quality in the medical field. Yes I guess I've been on the go since Alpha shift two days ago...... When our assignment changed my schedule went out the hatch. I am glad you allowed me to make up for the silliness of the mustache. And as you said I will have to take me turn in sick bay for an exam. So you just may get to see more of me...", John laughed as he could see the twinkle in Miraan's eye. Then with a mischievous smirk. "Thank you for a pleasant time and I hope we can see more of each other... now I guess I'd better get to my quarters before I start snoring here."
Rising John took Miraan's hand, bowed politely,"Miraan,until next time."
He then left smiling, thinking of the possibilities.

You said the bug were made to be weapons.
Who developed them?
If they were weapons then at one time they were able to be controlled, would we know about that and how?
Do we know if they feed on living things?
Would we know what they feed on?
Are there webs around?
Can we see any other tunnels or cave areas where there might be more of these or where we could take cover?
Do they only direct the fire in a line behind them?
Do they have mandibles that can grab and draw one in or hold a victim for the bite?

USS Peregrine; Deck 5, "The Aerie," - 0745
"Don't worry John," she said as she reached across and laid her hand atop his to calm him, "Your pet name for Chief Cook is safe with me." After a long moment she removed her hand and went back to nibbling at her fruit and cheese.
Even as tired as he was John enjoying the attention. Miraan's hand lingering on has was a clear signal that she not afraid of men.
"I think I will like it hear aboard the Peregrine," she went on, "and with all the new transfers, including a new Chief Medical officer, we will be quite busy in Medical I think over the next week or so. The Doctor has ordered checkups on all the ship's crew in order to update the records." She paused and her eyes sparkled again as a small smile came to her lips.
"Perhaps I will be 'seeing' a lot more of you soon, John," She said referring to the physical exam no doubt.
John broke into hardy laugh, "Oh be careful what you wish for,.." With that john took another sip.
"But, on to other things," She continued, "Tell me how long you have served aboard and have you seen any battles while you have been stationed aboard the Peregrine?"
"I've been on board for nine months. I had been on my first assignment for nearly four years in Security and there had been a bit of intrigue there. It was on a much larger ship and I had a lot of opportunity to learn. Star Fleet seems to have some kind means to their plan and I must have been up for rotation. I had requested to a Tactical position for my next assignment. The Peregrine had got called to action here due pirates raiding in the shipping lanes. It sort of sounded like something out an adventure novel. There was an opening for a ACTO here and I got it. Now some folks may think being assigned to smaller ship is somehow demeaning, but this is a great opportunity. There is as much work here as a Constitution Class just few folks to do it. ,but I'm wandering again. What had sound like an adventure fighting pirates turned out to be a pretty dull tour. I guess they heard how formidable a Scout Class really is so they moved on." The Brandy was starting to mellow John and barely was able to stifle a yawn. After another warming sip, "If we are lucky it will stay quiet,.could give all of us more time get to know each other,.have you ever been to Earth?"
