If it makes sense then I don't have problem with Pops staying to watch Destiny. He can practice his cooking and have some nice chilli and noddles ready for your return.(Skyline Chilli)

Remember that a ship is refered to as She, so Ivy's mutterings don't have to mean a person. A captain loves his ship. Remember how the crew felt when Roc took so much damage in the rescue of the fiddle.

Well we still won't want to leave Destiny unmanned. Too easy for her to be boarded if this is a trap of some sort.

Well we can make the leap of faith and leave Ivy in command. I was just thinking our readers might enjoy the background.

In Roc we had Ma as the NPC and it was assumed she had the skills to not only pilot the shuttle but also Roc in a pinch. She was known as a scrappy fighter with her pink shotgun so she could defend the Roc when the crew was out.

Now we have a 16 year old as the NPC and it hasn't been established she could handle Destiny in a pinch or defend her from intruders.

This is why I was alluding to keeping several folks on board. Doc is a fighter that can actively defend Destiny and Alex could swing destiny in close to pickup the shuttle in an emergancy or perform anti boarding manuvers.

How about a little background to fill the gaps some. Her shyness would belay the idea that she can take down some street toughs with her flying hands and feet or shot the eye out of a vulture going after a puppuy from 50 yards with a hand gun.

Thank you so much. I'd say the shuttle's stats should be saved on the charater sheet with the ships. You have already done that, I haven't looked yet. Maybe Brom can color the picture and make the shuttle black to match Destiny.

Ok Brom, it will be Wyatt's call to attempt to board.

Your final choice of boarding party but my thought is Wyatt, Wolf and either Pops or Fox.

Wyatt and Wolf are firer power.

Fox or Pops should be able to get around and locks, sensors or systems.

This could be a chance for Fox to shine, but Pops may be needed for the old systems.

I don't think the Doc is needed unless we can sense some life over there. Ivy may press to send medical help.

Subject: Shuttle.......

Alacrity, have you put together any info on the shuttle that is in Destiny?

Just basics like how many seats, range, stuff that might limit what it can do in case we decide to shuttle over.

I don't remember us ever using it in the other story. I don't remember if there was one on Destiny or if we have had to had to find one and modify it to work on Destiny.

There were standard stats on the firefly shuttles. Maybe we just found one of them.

Jonah had taken to preparing the meals. The lack of funds had made the choice of food stock pretty slim. It had been a few years since he’d had to scrape by. Now he’d had buy what he could get and that was mostly beans and food paste. Spices were scarce but he found a few, now he was just trying to be creative. Although they hadn’t got rich he and his crew of the Nora Lee had been able to be comfortable. The three of them would take their turn in the galley. Seems like often as not Nathan would jump in and take Jonah’s turn, said he wanted try out a new thing he’d found on the Cortex.

Now Jonah was just mixing things up, it wasn’t that hard. The crew didn’t complain, much. But he could tell thing weren’t always a delight. Tonight’s spicy western oriental bean stew was meant to be a stick to your ribs meal. It turned out more of a lump in your belly. Well if anyone felt like they could do better he was more than happy to hand them the spoon. Jonah knew that no one wanted the kitchen responsibility so he’d just keep on putting the best he could on the table, besides they had themselves a real Doctor on board if they felt too queezie . Maybe he’d try to find some of them items Nathan said were on the Cortex.

Just as he was finishing wiping down the counter Wyatt's voice came over the boats com, "We got ourselves an unknown some three thousand klicks ahead and in path. I'd appreciate everyone gettin' situation for whatever Gorram shinanigans are 'bout t' go down."

"Shinanigans...shinanigan, we ain't got time for no shinanigan,"Jonah grumbled out. Hanging the towel to dry the older man made his way to the lift. Jonah had liked this convenience, he was getting a too stiff to be climbing stairs all the time. The doors opened and he strolled into the command area. As he entered he saw Wyatt standing near the pilot. The new pilot concentrated on the sensors, Jonah had noticed they seemed a bit different than standard and perhaps more sensitive, but they were still working out the details. “Bingo." confirmed Alex. " Got something cap’n. There is a power signal, but it is very faint. Not much there. And whatever it is – its metal and kinda big, at least compared to us. Maybe 2x the size of Destiny.” He sighed, he hated not knowing. “That’s it. I’m checking every sensor we have, but until we get closer, maybe even visual range, I don’t think I can say much more. Right now, we are on a course to intercept. Let me know if that should change.”

"I don't like it none," Wyatt mutters. "Xiâoxin. We've been running on too much good luck t' not have it blow back in our faces. Take us int' visual range but be ready on the throttle."

"Capt'n..we need to be real careful....we don't need any delays or distractions. If you don't find any signs of life , we ain't got time for another salvage." About then he saw Ivy looking worried. She seemed to be repeating something. “Something is out there.” Ivy's faint voice filters in. “Something that needs help.”

That stopped Jonah cold. "We still need to be very careful."

Subject: More Questions.....

Before the party ended their time with the Kings Ulthok felt they needed more information on the option the go to the enemy lands. “My lords, we are given two options but we have little information on the journey to the origin forge. To head south and the cross the waters are there maps and guide information of what we could expect to encounter. Is there information on the evil lands? Are there secret approaches your spies have used that would aid us in that choice? Are there known dangers to avoid? Are there any magical or mighty items we could have to aid in our defense and journey? Allanan, you say you won’t go to the Dwarven forge but would you travel with us to the evil lands?” As the party member most likely to be in front as they traveled, searching out dangers and traps Ulthok wanted to be as prepared and aware as he could be. One way or the other the Halfling felt this would be their last journey, death stalked them and failure doomed them. He had no thoughts of a peaceful tomorrow, the only thing was now and the task at hand.

Subject: Pops POV....

Jonas had cast his lot in with Wyatt and Wolf. With his ship Nora Lee gone all he had left to sell off was the remains of his business. Those remaining funds, after settling with Nathan and Elam's kin, was enough to buy a third ownership in the craft they had salvaged. The years he had spent in R&D came in handy as they needed to find replacement parts. The ship was unique and parts were not common to other crafts. But with Wolf’s ability to machine and rebuild what Jonas found they usually worked, if Wolf would listen. There were times when the two of them would go at hammer and tong. Wolf usually insisting he knew what to do and that the “Old man “should back off. Then Jonah telling Wolf that he’d forgotten more than Wolf would ever know.

In the beginning Wolf had said, “Pops, I’m doing it my way.” and when the part blew Jonah would smile and say, “Well at least you’re learning how to make replacements parts.” But in the end the two worked through it and they got the ship performing.

Wyatt had found an abandoned registration and he submitted it as the class “modified”, hoping no one would look too close. When it was accepted the three of them christened the ship “Destiny”. It had been one of the names listed on the paper they had found and it just felt right. The ship had a personality and every so often a wispy mist would appear, it seemed to have the form of woman. Both Wyatt and Wolf had eventually mentioned they’d seem the lady of the ship. Jonah guess they had their own feeling about her. To Jonah she would make him think back to Nora Lee and maybe she was here with him again.

It was now time to find a crew and some work. Although Jonah had captained and piloted his own ship for ten years, it was mostly near the core planets and mostly just people that needed a pilot. Cargo transporting would take them away from easy access to medical facilities so adding a “Doc” made sense. Wyatt felt a third able bodied crewman was needed. And as he put it they should have “varied” skills and someone who help Jonah with the systems.

Wyatt had taken Jonah along when they met with potential crew, Jonah appreciated that Wyatt respected him and his opinion. As Wyatt's "First" he would have to be able to work with the crew and they with him, so it was good that all knew where they stood. The choice of pilot and medic sat well with Jonah, but the tech fella seemed a bit twitchy and put off that he had joined Wyatt for the talks. He seemed to be full of himself too. Jonah figured Wyatt felt too because he only committed to a trial period of the first run and the fella didn't want then to know his name; only wanted the others to call him as his handle “Fox”.

When they had finished Pops grinned at the fella, can call me Jonah. I’ll be interested in seeing how you handle our systems.” Jonah saw Wyatt raise an eyebrow knowingly.

A bit later Wyatt had received a message and they traveled to Rhamba. The captain left on personal business. When he returned he brought a new a crew member, Ivy. Pops had looked at Wyatt with a raised eyebrow when he announced she was joining the crew. Jonah wasn’t used to having kids around so when they were introduced he may have come across a bit gruff. When they to got him he said,"Miss Sanders, I'm Mr. Hicks." Wolf blurted, "Mr. Hicks?... Pops what 'cha doing?" Jonah turned to the mechanic, "Son you earned the right and permission to use that." Jonah caught "Fox's" eye as he turned back to Ivy. "Miss Sanders there's a room up on the top deck next to mine you can use. That way you'll be close to Capt'n Wyatt if you need anything." Jonah could see a bit of puzzlement on Ivy's face; she may not have been use to being addressed formally and treated as an equal. This came from a stranger old enough to be her grandfather.

(Alacrity can add any dialog for Ivy if he wishes.)

They now needed a job. Jonah figured the years of easy transport were over but he still had some contacts. Between that and the job boards word got out they looking for a run. Not much came their way and Wyatt let it be known they weren’t too picky about where they would go or what they would haul. Jonah was a bit concerned but he could live with “questionable”. Jonah hoped that his reputation and the fact that Destiny was an unknown ship helped land their first job. It wasn’t much but it was a start. Finally a local Named Molly Malone took a chance on them. First impressions are everything, so they had to nail this delivery, no matter what.

It says that Ivy is sixteen and it seemed odd that girl that old would start call the men in the crew "Uncle". I could see Wyatt as uncle from being a framily friend but has Ivy built trust in the rest of the crew this soon to be that familure?

Anyway Jonah is being a bit formal but addressing Ivy with respect and treating her as equal. Though not posted it is guessed that Wyatt has talked to her about pulling her weight.

Seeing that folks seem to take exception to Jonah's beans maybe she'd like to learn to cook.

Subject: What if.........

Ulthok listened to the proposal of the Dwarvs to carry the sword to their forge and there destroy it. Their forces would accompany them for protection and help. Powerful magic was assumed to be needed to enhance the forge to do the task. Allanan said he would not accompany them there to supply that magic but would instead provide scrolls of magic to be read and thereby provided the enhancement.

To Ulthok’s mind to course to the Dwarven forge though through relatively safer lands would be a great challenge. The one that had created the sword now seemed to rise again and would not stop pursuing them until it was again in his hands. Also as word spread that the sword was found there would be others who desiring its power would also pursue. Though unlikely these forces would unite they would constantly harass the party until they were worn down. And even if they arrived with the sword it was still to be seen if the forge could be made equal to the task.

The other option was to continue as they had originally planned. Take the sword to the forge where it was created and there use those forces to destroy it. Never had it been implied that additional means would be needed to complete the task; only that they or at least one would survive to reach the forge fires and cast the sword into wince it came. The same competing forces would still pursue them; but he who made the sword would wait for them to deliver it to him. His thoughts would be more to their safe arrival, to then dispose of them and claim his prize.

It also occurred to the mage that if their one call for help would be most useful in the heart the enemy’s stronghold. Because if the stories were true the sword was created with help of Loki’s hand. His magic was tied to both the sword and the creator. It seemed to Ulthok that the one that threw down Loki would fear his rise if his minion regained the sword’s strength and power. That because the Dragon goddess was also a creation of Loki she could not destroy the sword, but she could and would help, if only to secure her own dominion.

Ulthok felt his thoughts needed conveyed to the party so that their questions to the Kings would bear fruit for travels to the core of the enemy. “My lords, if you will allow me a moment with my friend. “ The Halfling gathered the party around him and in whispered tones (more in case the goddess was listening so they wouldn’t break their word) explained his thoughts and concerns. When they had done he said to them, “My vote would be to continue as we had begun, go to when the sword made.”

(Out of character: Others can post their whispered thought s, I’d say that after the discussion Cor again take the lead with questions on what would happen if the party chose the original plan.)

Subject: Slowly He Turned......

Got the first post up. It is still flowing like cold heavy weight motor oil but at least it is flowing. I hope to do some other fill too. I've some thoughts to go along with the getting of the job and Pops acting as "The Face". If no one objects I planned to have him cash in a bit on his time with the Nora Lee as a "reliable" delivery source. Being that Alacrity already said we got the job I can't mess it up too much.

Alacrity is help me rebuild my character sheet, I am awful at that. He pointed out I had too much conflict in my choices. Things should be cleared up soon.

The crew does not know anything about Jonah's history beyond a short time before he lost his job as Senior R&D Quality Engineer. That is all ten plus years before the war. There may be a bit more personal story behind the name of his transport Nora Lee. But for now when asked he just says it was a nice sounding name.

Subject: Destiny Calls........

Jonah had his paperwork in hand and was rounding up the passengers assigned to him. With the wat over he’d been able to make some money doing pick and delivery of POWs being released and returned to the some of the core planets. They’d docked the Nora Lee to the Victorious. Jonah had left Nathen and Elum to prepare while he reported in to collect his passengers.

Johan had come to the holding room where two men waited. A tall muscular bald guy paced like a caged animal and slightly older fellow with dark hair and a slight oriental just stood there calmly resigned to the events. Unfolding the passage documents he was about to address the men when alarms starts clanging, the ship shook with the sounds of missile hits. Explosions followed. People running.  An alliance guard came to the door and opened it quickly “To the life pods!” He said firmly, “Now! Quick quick quick! We are under attack!” Jonah starred as the boat rocked from the impacts. He couldn’t seem to get moving but he knew he needed to get to the Nora Lee. Another explosion rocked, that was it the three men ran into the gangway. Jonah headed down the way but the Nora Lee was at the aft end and he could see ahead the passage was blocked with debris. Jonah could only hope Nathen would not wait for him and cut her loose.

The three of them made it into a life pod; it seals itself and launches. They watch as they spiral away from the burning ship. Small ships black and diamond shaped ships fly past, launching more missiles. The “Victorious” breaks up into pieces. Jonah’s knees buckle as he sees his freighter is attached to it.

The big guy found a basic tools kit and a manual for Blue Sun Life Pods XL3’s.  He quickly discovered they were in a Blue Sun Life Pod XL6. “These aren’t going to help.” Jonah looked at him,”Don’t worry these were made from the same basic model.” He immediately starts opening panels and looking around, “Gonna kill the beacon. Don’t want them xxx homing in on it.” Turning Johan, “Pops can you fly this thing and get us the h*** out here?”

The big guys words brought his attention back, “It Johan, not Pops”, the big guy just shrugged.

Steeling himself, he went to the flight controls and found they were locked out. “I can figure out how to get these working.” The big guy looked at him raising an eyebrow, “Ok Pops ….and you can call me Wolf”.

The other man looked up, “I’m Wyatt since we do not have a lot of fuel, we should drift for a time and then use the thrusters judiciously to try to get to a shipping area where we could reactivate the beacon.”

The men talked over the next several days, Jonah told them about Nora Lee. He told them of the events and how he’d got her from his former employer. He told them of his time serving both sides during the war as a diplomatic courier and that he was neutral. Wolf seemed to get a kick out keep calling him Pops and after a while Jonah stopped objecting, after all he was old to be his Pops.

After 5 days, they got a ping on the proximity detector. Something was out there.

Wyatt made the decision to activate the beacon and take your chances. But nothing happened. Jonah moved the pod around and soon found the ship. It was a derelict floating in space. Looked like a transport but it was painted black and very stylish. There were no signs of life on the ship and no power signatures – it seemed completely dead.

The Life pod was not going to last forever but the ship was dead in the black. Jonah wanted to stay with the pod, Wolf wanted to try the ship. Wyatt again made the final decision to see if they could get in to the ship and see what was salvageable.

The cargo bay had to be manually opened through an outer hatch which Wolf did via the EVA suit. Once inside, Wyatt and Pops took the two HD suits and explored the ship, short distances at first. The cargo bay looked like it had been through a battle. It did not take long to realize that someone had lined the walls of the Bay with claymore mines and then there were all set off. Not much left inside.

The ship had no dead aboard, but there was definitely a battle here before. Most of the ship was shot up from within, or destroyed by an explosive force. The only places intact were the cockpit and engineering. You found another HD EVA suit and more oxygen tanks in a locker. Fenris checked the engines and found to his surprise that they were operational. There was some damage, enough to stop them but he could at least it spinning.

The ship was like nothing Jonah had worked on during his years in R&D, but...well he just felt he knew more... something… he he noticed things.

The Speed Gauge went to 13. Most transports can reach a hard burn of 6, maybe 7.

The ship’s wiring had been hand rolled with anti-magnetic tape. Every sign piece of wiring.

There was a backup fusion battery that drew power from the engine. It was basic put in to restart the ship and life support if ever hit by an EMP attack.

The Pulse beacon had seven setting (Seven different call numbers spots). Pulse beacons are only made to hold one. However all the numbers in the array were wiped clean.

So he fixed the ship as best he could, keep life support and heat to the cockpit and engine room only. It was tight, but not as tight the life pods.  Jonah watched Wyatt take charge and he knew this was the new captain of this ship. He knew he could trust him and when he slipped and called Pops Jonah just smiled and nodded. Johan knew he’d settle up proper with Nathen and Elum’s kin, but this was his new ship and his new crew.

Subject: A little back story...Ulthok, Valene and Peri....

Leaving the carnage behind Ulthok and Valene made their way down the hall to the rooms. The moon shining bright through the window as the two entered Ulthok’s room. Valene lay the sleeping Peri gently on the bed then removed her backpack. Ulthok closed the curtains darkening the room. Pausing he smiled as he stood and listen the soft rhythmic breathing of the small Fairie Dragon. He could sense the peacefulness of whatever dreams Peri may have been having.

Valene wiped out the metal pie pan that Peri used as her bed. The Halfling took one her silk scarves and laid it in the pan. Gently lifting Peri she placed her in the small round bed. Peri stirred slightly, sniffed the scent of Valene on the silk and seemed to purr contentedly.

Ulthok watched from the window, these were the two creatures that owned his heart and were now the closest thing he had to family. He crossed the and place a kiss on Valene’s cheek, “I am off to the kitchen, our little girl there will be in need of nourishment when she awakes and it has been a while since I have made her an apple pie… You should get some rest too. Perhaps I will order a bath sent up.” Valene giggled, “If you hurry perhaps the water will still be warm when you return.”

When Ulthok entered the kitchen the head cook and her girls had seemed to be waiting on him. “Master Ulthok we heard of what happened to Peri, ours hearts were broken for she was a joy to have sneaking in for treat when you were here before. “ They looked at him with anticipation, “Ah..well with the help of strong Fey magic I am happy to say she has been recovered and is resting. I have come to prepare her favorite apple pie for when she awakes.” The kitchen crew nearly danced with joy, “Oh Sir let us prepare it for you, we so missed her and it would our honor and pleasure.” The Halfling looked up at them and bowed graciously, “She would truly enjoy that…you are so much better at baking that then I..yes please do.…Looking around, “ Would it be too late to have hot bath delivered to Lady Valene’s room? This ordeal has been wearing on her and bit luxury would be so nice for her mind and body.”

“ Ah.. good sir there is a measure hot water available and I will have it and tub delivered immediately, you set yourself there at the table and my girls will fetch you some ale and a morsel of food while things are made ready.” With a smile and a wink.” I’ll prepare a small basket that you can deliver so the Lady may also enjoy a bit of wine and cheese as she soaks.”

Ulthok lifted himself onto the chair and there quickly was delivered a flagon of prime ale and a plate of sliced cheese, meat and bread. It was only then that he realized just how hungry he was. Finishing the ale, and a decent portion of the platter, a covered basket was brought to the table. “There you go good sure the Lady is well served…I placed a small vial of lavender in there too for the bath water, it should aid in comforting and relaxing her mind and spirit.” As the kitchen girls giggled the cook shooed then back to their chores.

Climbing down Ulthok took the basket, bowed slightly and headed to Valene’s room. As he passed the serving men one stopped, “Master Ulthok..Lady Valene has us place the bath in your room. She said she want to keep watch on the little fairie dragon….have a pleasant evening sir.” The men discreetly returned to the other chores.

Knocking lightly before he entered Ulthok opened the door a bit and slipped into the room. Candles had been lit giving a warm glow to the room. Valene had just slid into the tub. A light steam rose from water as she lay there, eyes closed, and sighed. Ulthok placed the basket on small table he’d moved next to the tub. Opening it he found the vial and poured fragrant oil into the water. The sweet floral aroma caressed the fair Halfling maid. Valene breathed deeply, her breasts rising to the water’s surface as she arched her neck.

Next was the wine, a fine red liquid that he poured into a crystal glass. Leaning over the edge of the bath

he handed it to Valene, “For the Lady, compliments of the chef. As Valene reached for the glass Ulthok smile as he gazed at her form in the clear water. It had seem to be ages since they spent time together.

Returning to the basket he remove the plate of cheese and cut it in thin slices. Drawing chair to the tub he sat himself next to her shoulder and proceeded to feed the morsels to the lady. Valene moaned with delight. There for the rest of the evening they enjoyed the simple pleasures.

There were stories among the staff that later, when the pie was delivered outside the room, that laughing and splashing could be heard coming from the room.

I like the way Alacrity took stuff from the old Destiny and rolled it in the new. Part of the old story the mechanic Grace was very twichy and she warpped all the wiring after we had been hit by anEMP attack. She also lined the ship with the claymores to stop anyone from taking the ship. Good memories. But that has nothing to do with us now.
