It was going well, Tochi thought. The new Ensign seemed a bit more at ease than when he'd first entered Lt Zai's office and the laid-back approach to the conversation, seemingly, had stripped a majority of whatever apprehension away from the mountainous human.

"I haven't had a chance, yet, sir," Hebert had said in reply to the question of having been assigned quarters, "I wanted to come and make my introduction."

Zai nodded, running one hand over the console set into his desk and calling up an Ops feed in order to check on the man's billet.

"If I may, sir," Thomason continued, "I have a few questions before then."

"Absolutely," Tochi replied, "please, proceed."

"When and where would we find the scheduling for our shifts?"

"Typically," the Trill answered, "your duty shifts can be accessed from the ship's computer and, often, are posted in the Flight Control Office, which is adjacent to the Flight Ops center in shuttle bay 2. Having said that, though, I've got you scheduled at the CONN on Beta shift Sundays and Mondays, and Gamma shift on Wednesdays and Thursdays. If that works for you, Ensign, that will put you on the bridge for the first time, tomorrow, at 1500 hours."

"I see," Thomason said, obviously making a mental note of the Lieutenant's proposed schedule, "Am I to be given command shifts, or just helm?"

Ambitious, Tochi grinned, Good.

"You do have some command training, Mr Thomason," he answered, "and, with such a small crew aboard, yes, you will be expected to sit in the Big Chair, on occasion. Again, this is tentative, but, currently, I've got you slotted in to take the night-watch on Saturday nights. Between your rotations at CONN and your stint at command, that puts you at a total of five bridge shifts per week; your off days being Tuesdays and Fridays. Acceptable?"

"Understood," Thomason responded, "thank you. Lastly, I suppose, is what happens next? I've never been assigned to a Starship. Where do I go from this office?"

"Well," Tochi said, "since, Operations doesn't seem to have posted your billet, yet, I suppose your next step would be to check in with Ops and get your quarters assigned. Once you know where you'll be bunking, you can get your gear stowed and familiarize yourself with the ship.

I would say to go and introduce yourself to the rest of the Flight Control team, but, I've given most of them liberty aboard the Starbase, this evening. Senior Master Chief V'Lur, however, can likely be found in Flight Ops. The rest, we expect, will be back aboard before morning."

"Understood, sir," Hebert said, getting to his feet, "I'll head over to operations and find a room."

"Very good," Tochi said, also rising from his chair, "Let us know when you're settled in and," Lt Zai noticed, then, that Thomason's face seemed to indicate the masking of an unasked question. To that end, the Trill abandoned his initial statement and asked; "Something else on your mind, Ensign?"

"Well, sir," Hebert answered frankly, "it's just that I was wondering if it would be possible to get acquainted with Captain Drake. I've heard stories and would like to put a face with them."

"I'm sure the Captain is aboard," Tochi replied, "but we doubt that making introductions tonight would be the best idea. He's got a meeting at 0800 with the command staff of the Coronado and the delegates from the Kuldar and Rytain contingents, so he's likely preparing himself for that." Tochi came out from behind his desk, then, and, reaching up, clasped the big man on the shoulder, subtly turning him for the door. "You'll meet the Captain soon enough, Hebert, and, we're sure, you won't be disappointed when matching the face to the stories.

Right now, though, you've got as much on your plate as the Captain's got on his," the Trill XO continued, releasing the man's massive shoulder and walking with him, now, to the door, "Get yourself to Ops, get that bunk assignment, and then get yourself familiar with Peregrine. We're hoping you'll be with us a good long while, Ensign. Don't try to pack your entire tour into the first few hours aboard, hm?"

"Aye, sir," Thomason answered, somewhat sheepishly, "Thank you, again."

"Any time," Tochi nodded.

As the two flight controllers reached the door and it swept open in front of them, Hebert paused and said; "About the offer of fencing, sir; it'd be a pleasure to duel you. Perhaps, on one of our off shifts, we could find the time?"

"Absolutely," the XO grinned, ushering the big man out the door ahead of him, "I look forward to it."

"Good day, sir," Thomason said, then.

"Good evening, Ensign," Tochi returned, "and, again, welcome to the Peregrine."

Nyx shrugged at the woman's appraisal. "I stop in from time to time," he replied, "and they know me well enough, I suppose." He paused, here, sipped at his wine, and let his gaze flit around the room once more before returning his attentions to the woman. "Though, not as well as they should like to imagine, yes?"

He shifted in his shadows, then, taking another taste of his wine before relegating the goblet to the table. As he leaned forward to do so, his yellow eyes caught light from the hearth and flashed from the darkness in which he sat as they took the woman in. A faint, yet, razor sharp smile played on his lips.

"And, you, my cousin," the Mith'ganni continued as he studied her, "You are not a ‘regular' to this place, hm? What brings you here this evening I might wonder?"

...The mass dept head transfers were a bit unexpected, in general, so, if it were to play out as a "surprise" for any of the affected departments, it's perfectly acceptable. Entirely up to the individuals involved, though.

As the man-bear that was Ensign Thomason settled a bit stiffly onto the proffered chair, Tochi, too, retook his seat, albeit with a decidedly more relaxed posture than the Ensign was exhibiting.

"Yes, sir," Thomason answered in reply to Zai's initial query, "I've been at Starbase 118 awaiting transfer orders. Though I appreciate the amenities and life of the starbase, I'm ready to get out and do what I can for Starfleet."

Tochi nodded and offered a knowing smile at that. "And see more of the galaxy than just the Lonka Cluster," the Trill chuckled, "I understand. Tell me something about yourself, Mister Thomason."

"I'm a simple man, sir. I work out several times a day for several hours and I enjoy wrestling, though few deem me an opponent they'd like to tangle with." Hebert chuckled softly.

Tochi chuckled along with him; "We can't imagine why."

"I've recently taken up the art of fencing. I'm not much for a foil or épée, greatly preferring the power of a saber. Naturally, if I could, I'd just use a claymore, but I doubt that's allowed." Thomason laughed deeply.

"Likely not," Tochi agreed, "I'm something of a fencer, myself. Should time allow, we'll most definitely have to meet for a match or two.

Anyway," he said, gesturing for Hebert to continue, "please."

"I enjoy mental and physical challenges," the giant of a man went on, "I've run every simulation available to me for my position and I look forward to the challenges and demands this job brings, as well as, of course, serving under you, sir."

"You say that, now, Ensign," Tochi grinned playfully, "but wait until you've been with us a few months. Your opinion might change.

Have you checked in with Ops and been assigned quarters, yet?"

((Tag... answer determines where the convo goes.))

Subject: I'm calm... but if things go bad...

"Calm yourself, Talca," the Khord cleric, Hammerfoot said, "Lower your bow. I shall approach them and,"

"I don't know that that's wise, friend," Talca murmured, even as the cleric advanced toward the oncoming group, "nothing about this feels natural,"

"Talca," the woman he knew as Pepper, said, then, "I don't need nae magics to know...those folk are fishy. And not breaded, fried, with taters either."

Despite the unease he felt, the pathfinder allowed a grin at Pepper's quip. "You had to mention fish," the ranger shot back, "Now I'm thinking about supper, which only makes this weather all the worse."

Behind him, Aedan's dulcimer sent music into the air and the bard's voice with it in harmony,

A squirrel in the forest had lost his way
amid the oaks and the locust
he saw Mister Badger and asked him 'Say'
Which way's home? I just can't seem to focus...

"Appropriate," the ranger mumbled, shifting his position in the road to maintain a clear shot past Hammerfoot should such a thing become necessary...

" 'tiss this really a time for music friend Aedan?" Irel hissed as the tall fighter stepped forward to help pull Pepper from the mud.

,Talca couldn't help by sympathize with the woman's sentiment, just then. Typically, he immensely enjoyed the bard's playing and crooning - found it enchanting and even inspiring, at times - but, now, with this weather, the off-putting group of travelers ahead, and the priest of Kharox happily clumping toward them, Focus, Talca, he heard Meri's voice in his mind, never mind the song, Just focus, He nodded, taking his eyes from his chosen target only long enough to check the positions of his companions. His gaze slid back to his target, again, and, as he side stepped towards the edge of the road in order to get a clearer shot, began to sight the creature in.

"Undead! Undead! Undead!"

"Mani?!" Vengador's booming warning had caused Talca to bring his bow to full draw, then, and to lift his aim from the lead creature's chest to it's head. "Are you certain, cleric," he asked, now intently focused on his own breathing and aim, Please say you are not,

"Calm yourself, Laddie! I'm sure they're just travelers," Hammerfoot called back to his brother cleric. That reassurance uttered, though, Talca noticed that the Khord priest hadn't entirely dismissed the possibility of Vengador's warning. The cleric of Kharox, ever hopeful as he was, called out again to the other group, offering assistance but, now, did so from a more prepared posture.

"If I was feelin' poorly and out in weather like this," Talca heard Pepper say, "I'd be the same... wait... they be comin' from Crandel? Ye think the whole lot of 'em be sick in that city?"

Kith-jora's blessings, I hope not, Talca thought, still prepared to loose an arrow over Hammerfoot's shoulder. That plea to the god of nature, as hopeful and sincere as it had been, did little to ease the knot in the ranger's stomach, though, for seemingly, Kith-jora had forsaken this place, or been driven from it,

"I'll stand ready," he heard Rae say.

As she hefted her shield and moved forward, Talca offered a faint nod; "Carefully, selenelle ..."

((OOC: I think that catches me up, , Talca is playing the ever-cautious, ever-vigilant overwatch role, at the moment, Staying at range and keeping the foremost target in the other group in the proverbial cross-hairs. At the first sign of things getting ugly - THWIP! ))

Given the composition of our party, and the personalities of each member, I don't know that our merry band would have a true leader. We've got such an eclectic mix, here, that I almost envision a very democratic dynamic having developed.

That said, Talca would only consider himself a "leader" where choosing the best and/or safest path for his companions was concerned and, of course, guiding them along said path. To that end, I figure he's usually "running point" in our marching formations but, in combat situations, will remain at range, if possible, and let someone else "lead" the combat operations.

Stardate 2365.02.07
USS Peregrine; XO's Office - 1900

In the past hour or so, Lt Zai had done little other than review any information he could find on the Kuldar and Raytian people. He had, of course, enjoyed a late supper of steamed chall'a and Vulcan spice tea, but, even while eating, he had poured over those files and, when his mind had taken in all he thought it could take on the subject, he had turned to reviewing files concerning the USS Coronado, more specifically, her pretentious commanding officer, Captain Jacobs. He had just immersed himself in the toffee-nosed man's dossier when, rather than the three-note chip of the door chime, his attention was drawn to the door by a heavy thud,

What the frill was that?

Snatched from his study of Jacobs' profile, Tochi arched a brow, skeptically regarding the door for an instant before saying; "It's open." The door slid open, then, and whatever light might have tried to enter the office from the corridor was blotted out by the massive frame of the man that stood on the other side.

((OOC: Assuming Thomason enters and does the whole "Ensign Thomason reporting for duty" thing, here.))

What the frill is that?!?! Tochi blinked as the huge man stepped in and introduced himself as Ensign Thomason. We have never seen a human that big! We're gonna need a bigger boat,

Once the initial shock at Thomason's immense proportions had passed, Lt Zai noted that the man's imposing size was more than countered by the nervous set of his features as he stood at attention on the other side of the desk. "At ease, Ensign," Tochi smiled, getting to his feet and extending a hand across the desk, "Welcome to the Peregrine."

((OOC: Assuming a handshake without having my arm inadvertently torn off and such,))

"Please," Zai said, gesturing to the chair in front of his desk, "have a seat.

I understand this is your first tour aboard a starship, Mister Thomason. You just graduated the Academy a few months ago, correct?

Nyx felt the eyes upon him, How could he not, with the place being as quiet and still as he'd seen it in quite some time? Of all the eyes that had ever been trained on him in this place, though, the ones he felt on him now were, different, new, and, as such, could only be attributed to one such soul in the tiny establishment, at the time. Nursing a long sip from his own goblet, Nyx's moon-eyed gaze ticked towards the dark-haired eleven woman he had noted sitting by the hearth when he entered. He watched her over the rim of his cup for a moment, yellow eyes glittering as they caught the light of the dancing flames that topped his table and that, and the spices in the wine soaking his tongue as he took in the woman's somewhat bemused smirk and the ease of her posture.

After a long instant of contemplation, the Mith'ganni moved the cup from his lips and held the thing aloft in something of a silent acknowledgement of the woman and, in a voice that was something akin to a whisper uttered through a mouthful of grave dirt, said; "Quel undome, arwen en amin.* A quiet night for quiet company, yes?"

The nearer they got to Crandel, the more that the Sylvari pathfinder called Talca felt ill at ease with the weather and, as his discomfiture grew, the distance he typically kept ahead of his comrades dwindled and dwindled some more.

Wrong, he thought, his fingers absently caressing the nock of the arrow he had set to his bowstring as he gazed into the drizzling mist ahead, Simply unnatural,

It wasn't the first time he'd had that thought in the course of these last days, of course, but, this time, it was much stronger than any of the others. Strong enough, in fact, that the ranger had stopped his advance scouting and lowered himself to a crouch in the midst of the path in order to let his companions close the gap between him and them. His sharp-eyed gaze flitted back and forth, now, between his compatriots - who were slowly drawing nearer at his rear - and a new group of travelers who had appeared some distance ahead, moving at a shuffling pace toward them, on the very path they were travelling.

"They walk strangely," he heard the Shield-Maiden of Falloes murmur as he, himself, squinted into the misty rain ahead, and studied the approaching group, "Perhaps an illness has pressed it's advantage with the advent of this fog? Though, for it to be so quick is peculiar."

Perceptive as ever, Talca thought, lifting his bow, now, and adding a bit of tension to the string as he drew back a bit, and sighted the lead member of the approaching group along the shaft of his arrow. The other group was, yet, at a distance where even his eyesight wasn't enough to verify a valid threat, but, his years in the wild, coupled with the peculiarity of the weather had him, perhaps, overly cautious. Much like that weather, the shambling aspect of the "mirror group" set an unpleasant, prickling sensation in the nape of his neck and a certain unease knotted his stomach. When his own party was within ten feet or so of his position, he eased the tension from his bow string long enough to hold up a hand, hopefully signaling his companions to stop or, at least, slow.

"I do not care for the looks of this, melloneamin," he stated, matter-of-factly, when he was sure they were within earshot, "This weather bothers me, yet, these seem to pay it no mind." He settled into a shooting posture, once more, drawing back the string of his bow and sighting along the arrow, again. "What say those of you with access to magic," he queried, settling his aim on the head of the foremost of the oncoming group, "is my concern unwarranted or, perhaps, should we abandon this trail and wait for these others to pass?"

((OOC: Fluff, really, but Talca's not liking this approaching group, is it weather playing with his perceptions? Is it Rae's unease? *shrug* Let me know, Yay, game!!! ))

",So everything is in order, then," Lt Zai asked, his eyes skimming the faces that had gathered around the small conference table, "We don't need to take on anything from the Starbase before we ship out with the Coronado?"

"Nothing but the new personnel, sir," Master Chief V'Lur affirmed with a faint nod of his head, "All auxiliary craft are functioning within optimum parameters, our store of at the ready components is at capacity, and, according to Engineering, the replication lab is fully capable of producing anything we may need in the duration."

"Good," Tochi nodded, his gaze dropping back to the PADD he held in one hand,

"Lieutenant?"

Zai grinned faintly and looked up, once more, from the PADD; his gaze now framing Petty Officer Owen, who was sitting there, tiny hand raised in the air as if she were in school; "Megan?"

"Not ta be forward, sir," she prefaced, her hand lowering now that Zai had acknowledged her, "but does this new helmsman comin' aboard mean I'll be losin' shifts at CONN?"

"No," Tochi smiled reassuringly, "it doesn't. All it means is that we'll have an extra body from Flight Control on the rotation and TAC and Ops can have their people back. We'll definitely still need you to pick up those shifts, Petty Officer."

Megan's own smile was kindled from the tentative sort to one of joyous relief. "Just wonderin'," she chirped, "Thank you, sir."

Still smiling, Tochi nodded and moved on; "Chief V'Lur; you've elected to stay aboard and monitor Flight Operations during our brief layover, I see?"

"I have," the Vulcan confirmed.

"And, I have volunteered to maintain a bridge presence, if need be," Ensign P'Tammah added, drawing a dismissive wave of the hand from Zai.

"No need, Vaela," Tochi said, flicking a glance at the Andorian woman, "you're long overdue for some time off-ship, regardless of how short the layover. Besides, I get the feeling our new helmsman will be making an appearance, before long, and looking to get settled before we ship out. I'll stay aboard and maintain a bridge presence as needed; you go and enjoy some free-time,"

P'Tammah nodded and smiled; "As you say, Lieutenant. Thank you."

Tochi returned the nod and, at the same time, rose from the table. "Well," he said, already moving for the door, himself, "What are you all waiting for?" The door to the Flight Control Office whooshed open and the Trill made a ‘hurry along' gesture to his people, as it did. "Go on! Go! Have fun!

If any of you need us before 0800 tomorrow, I'll be in my office or my quarters, most likely; but, do try not to need us, hm?"

((OOC: Okay, following the FC team's departure, Tochi will go to his office and will likely be found there, on the bridge, or somewhere between the two places until 2000 hrs (8:00 p.m.). After 2000, he'll be in his quarters.))

...but, technology-wise, the "original Enterprise" would be no match for the modern-day Saber class, either. Starship phaser arrays are, in the "current time," 10+ generations ahead of those on the Constitution class where output and modulation thresholds are concerned... shield technology has, similarly, advanced substantially since the Kirk-era. *Shrugs*

And, I don't think "Earth lasers" were specified, anywhere, so, in my mind, anyway, who's to say that a Kuldar laser cannon isn't equivalent to the Constitution class' phaser banks? As I said, it's totally up to Olan where the final effect of their tech lies, in the end, but I'd venture to guess that a little imagination and free-thinking on the part of the TAC/SEC department players wouldn't be frowned upon... Get that geek on and hybridize the NX and Constitution class tech to find a middle-ground as you see fit. If, by some chance, it seems to be over or under powered as you present it, I'm sure someone will let you know and appropriate edits can be made.

... that the Kuldar capabilities/armaments would be slightly more advanced that the NX series, actually. I remember reading that they were something like a century behind current Starfleet/Federation technology but, even at that, it would put them a century or so ahead of what might have been available on the NX ships.

Olan's call in the end, of course, just musing based on what I've gathered so far.

Topic: The Bleeding Lute - Come on in and Play!
Subject: A beginning... or an end?

The shadows lengthened outside the Bleeding Lute, as the sun began to set, and, as dusk gathered about the inn, deepened. When the last and faintest of the Day Star's rays withdrew from the land and the darkness outside the place was pierced only by recently lit torches and lanterns, those shadows passed across The Bleeding Lute's threshold and, in the wake of their passing, left behind a lone Mith'ganni. He lingered in the doorway a moment, his moon-yellow eyes slowly skimming the entirety of the common room as the light from candle and lantern tried in vain to lick the recently bloomed night from the dark attire in which the Twilight Elf was enshrouded. The penumbra seemed to cling to him as if it were part of him, or he a part of it. All the light seemed capable of, where this one was concerned, was to make his alabaster skin seem all the paler for it's touch; to glint from the threads which comprised the intricate, constellation embroidered on the breast of the curious, padded coat he wore; and, occasionally, gather in those lunar-hued eyes, where it reflected back on the room, perhaps a bit colder.

As those eyes completed their initial sweep of the nigh on empty room, the faintest ghost of a smile played on the Mith'ganni's lips and, then, he was in motion, whispering across the floor toward a table in the far back corner of the place. Once there, he sank into the seat at it's back, pinched out the flame that danced atop the candle on the table and, then, reclined into the shadows, awaiting the arrival of the wispy blonde, Sarah. He didn't wait long, as the nervous little woman had, upon the Mith'ganni's arrival, poured a wooden goblet full of the spiced wine that he favored, and was a scarce half minute behind him. She approached the table nervously, but didn't dare hesitate, and sat the goblet on the table. The shadows whispered something to her, then, a pale hand slithered forth from them, pushing two silver coins ahead of it.

"T-thank ye, sir," Sarah said from behind an all too uncertain smile. She took the silvers from the table only after the shadows on the other side had reclaimed the hand and, along with it, the goblet of wine; then, she backed away from the table - much more quickly than she had approached it - and returned to her work.
