Nah... not in the bad sense, anyhoo. A "prison of the heart" perhaps...

...better yet, an "unprison"! Yes, an unprison where one is completely free to be anything or anyone they choose to be... and the numbers don't matter because, in the end, ALL of the numbers are really just ones and zeros... and then there's jelly donuts, the space-time continuum, and randomosity!

As long as they're crawling up the wall and staying off of your legs, Bob-o, let 'em ride, man... let 'em ride.

Thanks all... I hated being gone but geez-o-lou is the 'Welcome home love fest' great or what?

In regards to the question as to whether I'd be stopping in more frequently - the answer is a definitive 'you bet yer bippy'. I hadn't planned on being away as long as I was, to be honest, but between work, recovering from surgery, and all the muss and fuss that go along with those sorts of things, I got kept out of the loop muuuuuch longer than I had ever imagined. However, now that I'm a permanent 'numbskull' (the neurectomy left me with absolutley no feeling in my scalp) and have adapted to that along with getting myself dug out of the mire at work, I should be able to manage more frequent visits... daily wouldn't be bad, eh?

Soooooo, anyway, my beloved Innmates, thanks again for the warm and enthusiastic welcome backs. I love all of ya tons and tons! You'll be seeing me around, I promise.

Whew! I think I finally escaped! Sorry it took me so long to get back folks... didn't want the evil 'Thems' to follow me back here and start wreaking havoc, you know. Sure, they get to have their way with you in real life, but we don't need that kind of stuff here in our own home, do we?

Nooooo, we don't.

Anyway... Hey there, kids! Uncle Eol's back! Let's all run with scissors to celebrate, shall we?

Topic: The Christmas Game!
Subject: Jingle, jingle!

1. Wrapping paper or gift bags? Either or… depends on the gift, really… some things are just not conducive to being wrapped so they get stuck in a bag.

2. Real tree or Artificial? Artificial... I miss the smell of a real tree, but not the poking, nor the needles on the floor.

3. When do you put up the tree? Weekend after Thanksgiving

4. When do you take the tree down? Whenever the wife tells me to… one year that didn’t happen until April… I’m pretty sure that my wife was either Santa or Mrs Claus in a past life (or will be in one yet to come).

5. Do you like eggnog? Oh yeah… cinnamony-nutmeggy goodness with a good wallop of rum or whiskey in it… what’s not to like?

6. Favorite gift received as a child? Oh wow! I was always partial to Legos buuuuuuuut I’d have to say the one gift that really flipped me out (because I really wanted it but didn’t dare ask for it due to expense) was this programmable futuristic tank thingy called Big Trak! That thing was fan-friggin-tabulous and was perfect for transporting and/or annihilating Star Wars action figures across the house, backyard, etc.

7. Hardest person(s) to buy for? My Dad… the man professes to never want anything… has everything he might need... etc

8. Easiest person to buy for? My daughters.

9. Do you have a nativity scene? A few actually… ranging from the ‘traditional’ to the ‘odd’

10. Mail or email Christmas cards? Since my wife is the HMFWIC of that department, I’m going to bet it’s snail mail, she’s kind of technophobic, bless her pea-pickin’ li’l heart.

11.Worst Christmas gift you ever received? Can’t say that I’ve got a category for that, really… How about everything I got during the Christmas of 1987? I had started boot camp on the 10th of November that year and, since boot for the good ol’ USMC is 13 weeks long, I didn’t get jack until after graduation. Yes, gang, in 1987 USMC stood for ‘U Suckers Missed Christmas’!

12. Favorite Christmas Movie? A Christmas Story (you’ll shoot your eye out kid!)

13. When do you start shopping for Christmas? A better question might be when do I stop? Finances and mental faculties being what they are I’ve gotten in the habit of buying Christmas presents whenever I might see something suitable and have the extra $$$ to do it.

14. Have you ever recycled a Christmas present? Yes.

15. Favorite thing to eat at Christmas? Whatcha got?

16. Lights on the tree? Don’t get me started on lights! We’ve got a 7 and a half foot tree, right? Seemed like, for a lot of years, I’d put string after string after everlovin’ string of twinklies on the thing only to have my wife say; “Well, honey, it’s pretty but I think it could use some more lights.” *sigh* Sooooo, one year, I put every string of lights I could find (including the ones for outside) on the tree… worked out to be in the neighborhood of 4,700 lights… the wife was finally satisfied… and airplanes started landing on my street…

17. Favorite Christmas song? Christmas Eve Sarajevo by the Trans Siberian Orchestra… actually, the entire Christmas Eve and Other Stories album. ROCK the Yuletide!!!!! If you want traditional, I’ll go with the Little Drummer Boy and We Three Kings.

18. Travel at Christmas or stay home? Stay home! Although, I’d dearly love to spend Christmas at the cabin one year… blankets of snow… a fire on the hearth… Ahhhhhh

19. Can you name all of Santa's reindeer? Didn’t Santa already name them?

20. Angel on the tree top or a star? A really loverly angel… looks a lot like my wife, actually.

21. Open the presents Christmas Eve or morning? Christmas Eve at Gramma’s house. Christmas morning at ours.

22. Most annoying thing about this time of the year? Money and mall madness.

23. Favorite ornament theme or color? It’s a historical hodgepodge as far as theme and color goes on our tree. We’ve had a long standing tradition of each family member buying/making an ornament before the tree goes up each year and, as you can imagine, after a few centuries, the tree is quite full of memories like “baby’s first Christmas 1987”, “Our First House”, etc, etc… Don’t try to define it, just gaze upon it in awe.

24. Favorite for Christmas dinner? Prime Rib!!!! Yummmmmmmmyyyyyyyyyy!!!!!

25. What do you want for Christmas this year? Serenity.

Subject: The hunt continues...

His gaze tracked from the night-shrouded view of the prairie beyond the train’s window and, for perhaps the hundredth time today, Crowkiller’s glittering, wolf-like eyes traced a slow, scrutinizing circuit around the interior of the car and the humans with whom he shared the space. As his eyes encountered each of them he paused for an instant, nostrils flaring as he scented the air, sampling the essence that exuded from one before allowing his senses to move on and investigate the next. The nervous ones drew his attention first…

The woman across the aisle with red-dyed hair was perhaps the most on edge. Her anxiety was almost a palpable thing and, at first glance and despite the essence gathered about her, Crowkiller had nearly categorized her as a rabbit, scared and skittish and bolting madly ahead of the wolf in a desperate but futile attempt to escape her fate. As he had watched her in the hours they had spent in this car, though, he had come to sense a bit of the predator in her, as well. Not easily stirred to the hunt, perhaps, and certainly hesitant to make the kill but there was a bit of Wolf in her, regardless, and, he sensed, who or whatever was hunting her was likely in for a nasty surprise when… if… they caught her.

The man towards the back, busily clacking away at his laptop, also had struck Bas as more than just a little uneasy. The man’s insistent, frenetic keystrokes, punctuated by regular, apprehensive surveys of his surroundings for the duration of the trip had set Crowkiller’s nerves on edge more than once… What are you runnin’ from, little rabbit?… but he’d managed to restrain himself, so far, leaving the man alone to bang away on the machine unmolested. If the irritating clickity-click-click didn’t end soon, though... No… you won’t… you can’t…

A low growl rumbled in his chest as he recalled the Nomad code he had, in recent years, sworn to live by. Suppressing the sound as best he could, he forced his gaze away from the man and on to the curious little creature closer to the front of the car. The ghost of a smile played on his lips as he, again, noticed the image of a rabbit on the left side of her too big hoody… Prey, his instincts growled again, meat! All of them! …despite the embroidered bunny, though, Bas didn’t get the same sense from this one as he had the first two. This one hadn’t given off any sense of angst, no scent of fear or trepidation clinging to her, and, aside from the sleeping woman across from her, the tiny blonde thing seemed to be the calmest spirit in the car. There was an odd tang to her essence, though… a strangeness that, try as he might, Crowkiller found difficult to define. He sniffed the air again, inviting more of the girl’s peculiar scent to filter in, deliberated it a moment longer, then chuffed softly and let his scrutiny of the little one pass.

The sleeping woman and her husband, then; quietest, so far, of the spirits on this train. Both rippled with power ¬¬ as did the others, here, of course – but, unlike the rest, no signs of that power seemed to manifest in them beyond the wispy auras. None of the conflict that had heightened the spoor of the red-haired woman, or the apprehensiveness that had betrayed the clean-shaven man, or even the quirky, disconnected ripples that emanated from the tiny blonde. Had it not been for those auras, though, Bas would have questioned if the Moon Gods had set him on the proper path, at all. He hadn’t questioned their guidance when this hunt had started, nor did he question it when the trail led him to the city where he had caught this train – the same city where he had left a handful of gang members’ corpses twitching in their own juices a day before – but, after he had sold his motorcycle in order to get the money for a ticket, leaving him with nothing but what he carried now, and boarded the train to find himself in the company of this group, he couldn’t help but wonder if the Old Ones were testing him somehow… or sending him to his end for past transgressions…

"We apologize for any inconvenience; however, we will have to delay our departure due to some temporary maintenance. We hope to depart in ten minutes, at 11 o'clock pm at the very latest. We thank you for your understanding."

The PA snatched Crowkiller’s attentions from the couple and the arrival of the woman in a conductor’s uniform prompted another low rumbling in his chest, accompanied by the flaring of nostrils and a curious cocking of his head to one side. As she spoke, opening the black folder that she carried under one arm and explaining its purpose, Bas folded his arms across his chest and turned his eyes back to the view beyond the train’s window… And here we are, he thought, even as the man in the back finally tore his fingers away from his computer and moved eagerly forward to sign his name, the scent is found, again, and the hunt resumes.

The woman and her husband signed next, finally showing a bit, albeit a very faint bit, of trepidation as they did so. Their signatures were followed, after a moment, by the strange, little one – even in signing her name, this one was more than peculiar, and the act took much longer than Bas thought it ought to.

“Bring it here, I’ll sign.”

He flicked a sidelong glance at the red-haired woman across the aisle and watched out of the corner of his eye as she, too, took the pen and scrawled her name on the contract presented by the conductor. When the sound of the pen lifting from the paper reached his ears, one of the Indian’s hands disappeared into the long, fringed duster that he wore and re-emerged and instant later wrapped around the hilt of a long, heavy bladed knife. As the conductor reclaimed the folder from the red-haired woman and turned his way, he pressed the sharpened edge of the blade to the palm of his right hand, coaxing a thin, red line of blood from beneath the skin.

“True name,” the conductor reminded him softly, opening the folder to present him with the contract.

The Indian offered a near imperceptible nod and, without looking at the woman, clenched his cut hand into a fist over the gold-trimmed document and squeezed a few droplets of his blood onto the last unsigned line. He watched the blood scroll fluidly across the line to spell out ‘Sungmanitou tanka nagin’ then become illegible and disappear into the page. Only then did he lift his green-gold eyes to the woman, nodding faintly to indicate that he was finished. As the knife was returned to wherever he had sheathed it beneath the leather of his coat, Crowkiller’s gaze turned back to the night-cloaked vista outside. He wondered what this place might have to do with the hunt as much as he wondered about these five others who would share this part of it with him.

((OOC: just a few minor liberties taken, here, with the conductor's actions, etc.. Edits as necessary. ))

I think I mentioned to Reralae that Crowkiller was basically a character I resurrected from an 'ages ago Shadowrun campaign/storyline', yes? Well, aside from the obvious shift in campaign setting, I figure 'Bas' still looks much the same as he did back in those days... that said; you can get a pretty good idea of Crowkiller's appearance right here. Did that back in '99 I believe... pen and ink + markers + a trippy little photoshoped background.. old school.

Once I clear the groggy from my brain, I'll endeavour to get a post out there.

It’s the little blue dudes!

Methinks you’ve been slipping backstage in the space-time continuum, boss… let’s see if I can explain this properly.

Think of the passage of Time as the progression of an endless train of boxcars, with each car representing one minute of ‘linear time’… got that pictured? Okay, now, take a look at that train and you’ll notice that, between each of the boxcars/minutes is an empty space (or void if you prefer) occupied by nothing but a small link that keeps one minute connected to the ones that precede and/or follow it, right? Right. Now, if you will, imagine that every minute in history is essentially a separate world, which must be built, maintained, and torn down once the world finishes with it.

All of this time maintenance is performed by a bunch of faceless blue dudes who, while we ‘mortals’ are stuck in that limbo between minutes, are busy tearing down the world in the boxcar that we just left and rebuilding it in the next boxcar in the train (with sight modifications, of course). Now, tearing down the world and replacing everything in it with exact duplicates isn’t an easy job by any means… even when you’ve got a huuuuuge team of freaky blue guys doing all the work… and getting it all done in that negligible span between minutes makes it even trickier. It’s hurry, hurry, hurry, rush, rush, rush to the nth degree for the poor bluies, man, so it’s not unusual that, every now and again, things might seemingly disappear only to reappear later in a place where “we could have sworn we already looked” or, sometimes, even in a place that there is “no possible way it could have been.” This happens because the blue guys either forget to put something back or put it back in the wrong place, etc…

Think about it… how many times have you gone looking for your car keys (or whatever). You get ready to leave for work in the morning and go to the spot where you’re 100% sure you put your keys last night but, when you get there, the keys are nowhere to be found. So, you start backtracking trying to figure out where you might have put your keys since you obviously didn’t put them where you thought you had, right? Usually, you get just to the point where you’ve convinced yourself that the keys have simply ‘vanished’ … you’re aggravated, annoyed, and probably verging on questioning your sanity… then, as you pass by the spot where you actually remember leaving your keys the night before, bing, bang, boom, there they are… right where you left them. You look puzzled, question your sanity once more because you know that you already looked there, then shrug it off as weird and off to work you go.

That’s the blue guys, dude… they forgot to put your keys back where they found them and, in one of the spans of limbo between minutes when you were searching for your keys, they remembered to put them back.

Time, a handy fiction to explain why everything doesn't happen all at once. Or maybe we're the fiction, moving minute by minute ... through the Twilight Zone.
