Earlier in the day
", If interested meet at the Luck of Shinara.

Signed, Lord Brown

"Lord Brown," Dak muttered the name under his breath as he scratched absently at one whisker-stubbled cheek and his gaze swept apprehensively around his tiny room, "I don't know that I've heard that name before."

His scowl deepened but, somehow, at the same time, his demeanor eased when he realized that, aside from the neatly folded letter he'd just found on his pillow, nothing else was amiss. The gear he'd left behind prior to last night's ranging and the fattish coinpurse he kept secreted away in the false bottom of a drawer in the bedside table were both undisturbed, and, in fact, had it not been for the letter, he might not have known that anyone had been here, at all. He watched Dog as, nose to the floorboards, she sniffed a circle about the bed, to the door and back, and then, tail wagging, jumped onto the bed and curled herself up at it's foot and stared up at him.

"Kai, eh," the ranger's scowl morphed into something more like a smile as he reached out a hand to scratch the animal between her ears and his green eyes regarded the note in his other hand, once more, "but, something, still,"

He folded the letter, relegated it to one of the small pouches that hung from his belt, and, his gaze still suspiciously scanning the room, sat on the edge of the bed next to Dog.

",Something, indeed, uma?" The dog grumbled and rested her head in the half-elf's lap, prompting his one hand to join the other in the scratching of her head. Her tail wagged with a bit more enthusiasm at that, beating out a soft thump-thump-thump against the bedclothes as Dak continued; "Something of more than a little interest, I think, don't you? Twenty gold a week isn't a sorry sum to offer us, especially considering we've already been doing the same thing for free, And, if nothing else, I'd like to meet this man who so easily and, it seems, invisibly, gained access to our home.

What say you, Dog," the ranger asked, his gaze now dropping to meet that of his companion's, "Do we go to The Luck of Shinara and meet with this Lord Brown?"

A soft bark and chuff was Dog's answer and Dak nodded in acknowledgement. "Precisely my thoughts," he said, tousling the fur between her ears before abandoning the scratching altogether.

"Come," he said, getting to his feet and moving to gather the remainder of his gear, "Let's go and see what Shinara's Luck reveals about this benefactor."

Later, at The Luck of Shinara

The Luck was as boisterous and seedy as it ever was when Dak and Dog slipped inside that evening. Just inside the door, the ranger's emerald eyes skimmed the crowd, making note of the placement and preoccupations of patrons and staff alike, before he committed another step. Dog whimpered faintly at the discordant music that scarcely rose above the din of the place and Dak's hand reached out to pat her head in consolation. "Sinta'amin," the ranger murmured, eyeing the waifish dancer for a moment before, finally, moving for the lone empty table in the place, "not the highest caliber of entertainment in the city, girl, but this is not why we're here."

Dog chuffed, nuzzled the ranger's hand, and followed at his heel as he weaved through the crowd. When they reached the empty table, she sat and glanced back toward the door as Dak regarded the ‘Reserved' sign for a fraction of an instant and, then, settled himself into one of the chairs behind the thing. She twitched her tail rather than wagged it and, as her ranger friend settled into his chosen spot, she curled up at his feet, resting her muzzle on her paws, and kept watch on the door.

((OOC: Elvish to English translations: Kai = Nothing; uma= yes; sinta'amin = I know))

Very interesting opening post! Laughed out loud at the smell of burnt gnome being less appetizing than bacon.

I'll try to have something posted for Dak a bit later today. Have meetings this morning that will keep me busy until 10 or so.

Finished Dak's inventory, description, and something of a background. Updated the "character post" above to include the new/updated info.

Note: The dog mentioned in the character sheet is not an "animal companion" per the ranger class (Dak's not reached that level, yet, of course). Instead, I imagined it as more of a "pet/companion" that Dak bought/adopted at some point (discounted 15 gp from my initial 500 for the dog's price). I envision the critter to look something akin to an Australian Shepherd. Dak simply calls her "Dog."

P.S. Looking forward to getting started on this.

Subject: Dak Whisperfoot

Okay, got a bit of a start on my Urban Ranger character - a Half-elven chap known as Dak Whisperfoot. Basically just stats and such at the moment, haven't finished buying gear, haven't really come up with much of a background, yet, either. But, all that aside, I figured I'd post what I've got for review/perusal. I'll update appearance, background, additional gear, etc a bit later.

  • Urban Tracking - Can track down the location of missing persons or wanted

    individuals within communities.

    Benefit

To find the trail of an individual or to follow it for 1 hour requires a Gather

Information check. You must make another Gather Information check every hour of

the search, as well as each time the trail becomes difficult to follow, such as

when it moves to a different area of town.

The DC of the check, and the number of checks required to track down your quarry,

depends on the community size and the conditions:

If you fail a Gather Information check, you can retry after 1 hour of questioning.

The game master should roll the number of checks required secretly, so that the

player doesn't know exactly how long the task will require.

    Normal

A character without this feat can use Gather Information to find out information

about a particular individual, but each check takes 1d4+1 hours and doesn't allow

    effective trailing.

    Special

A character with 5 ranks in Knowledge (local) gains a +2 bonus on the Gather

Information check to use this feat.

You can cut the time between Gather Information checks in half (to 30 minutes per

check rather than 1 hour), but you take a -5 penalty on the check.

As far as setting your avatar pic goes, you should just need go to the 'Edit Profile' screen, select your avatar picture from the dropdown, there, and click the submit button. Bing, bang, boom, picture!

Are you getting any errors when you try to change the pic or does it just act like it's doing something and then you get nothing?

Kinda like, are you a figment of my imagination or am I a figment of yours? These are the questions that keep me up at day, donchaknow?

Anyhoo... I'm pretty sure I could whip up a character and manage a post or so a week. How's an urban ranger type character sound?

Strange things are afoot at the Circle K!

Is there anyway to tell, at a glance, how long these "statues" have been there? (A layer of dust, cobwebs, etc, perhaps?) I'm guessing that it probably "varies from statue to statue" somehow but don't want to get too meta in my "we're all gonna die" thoughts just yet.

Now... I do like my offensive spells a good deal, this is true - (I'm Batmage! Tell your friends about me!) - but I've discovered that what I really like when mageing is using spells creatively... kind of like when Jal levitated that table and the Greens ran face first into it (or did it just stop a weapon or two... been long enough ago that I'm not 100% sure... either way, I remember being all giddy that my "flawed magic" was so effective at that point... even if Jal did die a few posts later.)

I mean, you know, if CL doesn't work at all it'd be nice to know now so we can lob another fireball into the darkness in the hopes of lighting a candle or something in there, right?

Jarenion had allowed a brief albeit subtle grin of satisfaction as his fireball exploded against the cavern ceiling, incinerating the exposed tentacles and sending the creature to which they'd been attached into a writhing agony,

"Hrmph," Kadrin rumbled humorously, "You wizards get all the toys, hmmm?"

,The mage peered at the dwarf from beneath the brim of his hat and allowed his grin to become a bit less subtle. "And you dwarves get none of the leeches," he had begun to jest in return. The joke was cut short, however, as any light of humor waned from the General's eyes when they tracked back to the cavern ceiling.

"Run," Kadrin urged him, then repeated the word louder for the benefit of the rest, "RUN!!!" Jarenion didn't even bother to follow the dwarf's gaze before heeding his words. Instead, he simply ran, following in the wake of those ahead of him as the cavern's roof came down behind. He may have also muttered a curse and something about one bad thing coming from one good but, between the crack, crash and clatter of the falling stone and the sounds of their out hearts and lungs pounding in their chests, it wasn't likely that either was heard outside of the mage's head.

Having made their escape, now, Jarenion and the rest of his companions turned to cast a glance back at the destruction they'd wrought and, then, around to see what damage had been done to them, Several of them were gravely wounded, yet, but given that the leeches that had been feeding on Maximus had begun to smoke and die off when exposed to the noon-day sun, the mage held on to some hope that,

Wait, Jarenion scowled, lifted the brim of his hat a bit, and blinked up at the sky, Noon? How far have we come? He absently chewed on his lip, his purple eyes flitting here and there as he contemplated the possibilities and ramifications of all of this as the rest tended themselves and each other. It was only when he felt Lun's hand on his chest and the tingling thrum of the healing that touch imparted that he was drawn back from his reverie.

,"best be getting on," he heard Kadrin say, "I doubt they'll wait on us to arrive before they start their little celebration. And, for Galen's sake, I don't want to be late."

Jarenion blinked and, with a grateful smile, fixed the Priestess in his sight; "Diola lle, arwenamin."

"It is just a simple healing," Lun said, matter-of-factly. "There will be plenty of opportunity for death this day. Come my brother, let us face this darkness side by side."

He nodded at this, touched her lightly on the arm, and then they turned to join the party as they approached the demon's maw that was the cave mouth. When his eyes failed to pierce the darkness that filled the opening, he scowled, when the unnatural chill from the depths of the cave beyond wafted past him, he barely managed to contain a shiver, and when the stench of the demon's breath reached his nose, his mouth clamped tight and his features twisted in aversion to the horrible odor.

"What lies ahead?" Arien queried, his flaming sword held aloft. "Can we pierce this darkness, or must we trudge directly into whatever trap lies in our path?"

Finarsil responded lyrically to the knight's wondering, providing and overture to the revelatory poem with an ominous tune on her flute.

He contemplated her words for a moment and, rubbing thoughtfully at his chin as he moved closer to Arien and the bard, nodded fractionally and said; "The Raven offers one sort of illumination, Sir Thedell, and I may be able to offer another."

((OOC: Assuming that, since night-/low-light vision doesn't seem effectual, this is some sort of magical darkness, Given that assumption, I'm hoping that Jarenion might be surely be able to find a small rock or pebble or something at his feet, cast a Continual Light spell on the thing, and toss it into the cave mouth. The idea, here, being that the glowing rock will at least give us a glance at what lies beyond before we just step right in, And that's as far as I'm willing to go, just yet, further actions or edits to these pending the outcome, I suppose.))
