Subject: The Hunt Begins

“I would enjoy that,” Sylla whispered in reply to his suggestion of luring one of the Sea Snakes into their grasp.

Ma’ra (Wonderful),” Nyx grinned as he produced a stick of charcoal from a belt pouch and began streaking his face with the stuff in preparation for what was to come. Often times, he used the stuff for nothing more than to darken his pale skin altogether when his plan was to simply slip through the shadows unobserved but, in situations such as this, he became a bit more artistic with the application of his added camouflage. Within moments he had painted his face to resemble a grinning skull; broad strokes surrounded his eyes and hollowed his cheeks, and narrower lines streaked from nose to chin, cutting across his lips from one corner of his mouth to the other…

“My sister is here,” Spite confessed after a moment, “She waits, somewhere, in the darkness. Should things go badly for me, they might also go badly for you. She can be quite unforgiving.”

…The charcoal stick disappeared back into its pouch and Nyx, not bothering to scan the surroundings for any signs of the other DeMoria demon, smiled at his cohort through Prien’s coal-painted visage. “No worries,” Nyx smirked, his yellow eyes winking from the hollow-painted eye sockets as his kukri whispered from its scabbard and danced momentarily in his hand, promising swift and deadly action should it be required, “I’ll not be any farther from you than your sister might ever be and should things go badly, precious, it shan’t be for either of us, yes?

I am a bastard, Spite,” he winked, “but not so much so that I’d risk the loss of such a fine lure on what, certainly, could prove to be a small fish.”

He felt her breath whisper over him as the sigh passed her lips and flowed into the dark song of a spell which melted the bard’s half-blooded beauty into something that a round-ear might find more appealing…

“Cay would be so jealous,” the now completely human-looking Sylla giggled as the spell was completed and she prepared to step forth into the streets.

“Mmm,” Nyx nodded, his gaze sliding over the not-unattractive illusion, snickering softly as he imagined Cay toying with a similar spell and transforming herself into a male of the species, “I wonder what parts she would hew away, then?”

As his eyes flicked, once more, from Sylla to the alley’s mouth, Nyx made sure that they had, thus far, gone unnoticed by any of the passersby and, at the same time, ensured that everything he might need in the playing of this game was at the ready… The garrote wire around his wrist was ready to be swiftly deployed if need be, one end of a coil of silken rope – to be used for binding or hanging their prey – was within reach, and the remainder of his blades, though, sheathed and secreted away, were also at their master’s call… “Never far behind, my lovely,” Nyx whispered to her again, his skull-painted face grinning as he cloaked himself in the shadows behind her, “shall we play?”

((OOC: Okie doke… Nyx will be sure to keep very keen eyes on Sylla as she baits our prize and, should it look as if things might start ‘going badly’ for the bardess, won’t hesitate to intervene as necessary. Nyx is going into ‘full stealth mode’, utilizing Move Silently and Hide skills for all their worth as he tails Sylla but also keeping eyes and ears peeled for any signs of trouble or opportunity. ))

Topic: yet another movie thread...
Subject: Keaton was a good Batman...

...but only in the first film, IMO. The second one (and it could've just been the movie, itself) seemed just a little too cheesy/Adam West-like for me to "buy it," so to speak. We won't even talk about the atrocities that made folks even think about Clooney or Kilmer in the role *cringe*... talk about harkening back to the campy 60's crap.

Anyhoo... gotta disagree with Lysk on this one. Being a Batman fan from waaaaaay back, I've gotta go with Bale as the Dark Knight. (In fact, when I saw Equilibrium, I thought; "Damn! Dude would make an awesome Batman!") He captures the duality of Bruce Wayne/Batman almost perfectly per the comics and novelizations (like Keaton came close to doing in Tim Burton's first effort) and the 'dark and gritty' stuff of Gotham (and the overall ambience of the film itself) clinched it, for me.

Bond? Ummm... gotta admit I have never really been a fan of Bond, even as a kid I had a hard time with the 'suspension of disbelief' in a lot of those films. I did like Dr No and Thunderball wasn't to terrible so, of course, I'll go with Connery as Bond. Can't say as any of the other Bonds were that memorable or believable and, honestly, I haven't been coaxed into watching any Bond film post Roger Moore. Haven't seen Casino Royale, of course, but Daniel Craig (from the trailers and clips I have seen) seems to take Bond back to the less gadget oriented, more rough-and-tumble aspect that Connery gave the character, soooo... I'll be hanging in there with Lysk's choices on this one. Connery and Craig.

Bond girls? Ummm... none, really... Most of them were supposedly to smart and cunning to have ended up as the bimbos they were ultimately portrayed as, let alone in the sack with a goober like Moore or even Dalton. Based on looks, though, I guess Halle Barry? (not even sure which film that was or what her name was, though... )

Subject: Rassafrassin Eol... Stirrin' up trouble again!

Didn't mean to cause a ruckus... my bad.

Meri - I don't know that I'd say most DMs prefer to roll the dice themselves, just that that's been my experience in play by post games. I know there are a few about that actually prefer to let the players roll their own dice, just haven't played with any of them, yet.

Personally, I don't have a preference one way or anohter (I'm more a storyteller type where gaming is concerned and the rules bits are, admittedly, an afterthought for me most of the time... or at least waaay in the back of the ol' noodle until it gets to combat or whatever...)

Anyhoo... as I said, didn't mean to cause a stir, just wanted to make sure I was going with the proper flow, so to speak. If Lou rolls, great... If we roll, great, too (and, I'll be glad to assist with the rolls and whatnot for those that may not be comfortable with it... )

So, waitaminnit - you're allowing us to roll the dice for ourselves, then?

Sweet... guess I missed that somewhere.

I had assumed that the dice rolling would be in your hands, I guess, because that's the way most of the games I've played in have been run so far... I did notice, though, that Meri did her own rolls a post or three ago and, given your last post here, am now realizing that we get to roll for ourselves... "Wakey, wakey, Eol!"

I'm hoping to have a post up a bit later, myself... might be as late as tomorrow morning, though... Penciling away on Spite and Mallys, ATM.

Been whacking away at the elves, Lou, and I think i may have actually gotten somewhere where the 'renaming the mith'ganni' issue is concerned... How does 'Teu'Shiri' grab you/fit in with your 'flowing' elven language?

One of the many translations of 'moon' into elven that I found was 'Teu', so, I guess Teu'Shiri might translate more as Moon Elves than Twilight Elves but, given the "moonlight color" of their eyes I figured that it might be fitting enough. Of course, as you noted, the "Teu'Shiri" wouldn't be a completely different 'race' per se but more a 'subset' of the Sheh-shiri...

Anyhoo... just thinking out loud and putting it out there for you to chew on, I guess... the more I play with these folks, the more they're starting to put me in mind of the Mongols... hmmmmm.... *scribbles down some more notes and wanders off talking to himself about yurts, yaks, and BBQ*

Meri - no problem on the belated bit. I figured I'd hear from you sooner or later. So glad that the colored version meets with your approval. As far as the wallpaper thing goes... I can whip you up something like that if you want... I took the original pic I did of Nyx, for example, worked the ever-lovin-bejeebers out of it in photoshop (color smoothing, lighting, backgrounding with Prien's symbol, etc) and came up with this.... Kinda looks more evil than in the orignal, eh? Let me know what size you want/need and I'll be glad to wriggle a wallpaper out of Cay's pic for you.

Lou - Nah... you didn't miss a thing. I just 'afterthoughted'... my fault entirely. I'll remember to include business like that in my OOCs from here on out, though. Can I take a mulligan?

How about overheard chit-chat on the streets, Lou? Any interesting conversations or tid-bits of note from those (Sea Snake or simple citizen) who might be passing by the alleyway where Nyx and Sylla are lurking?

Grumbles from the 'citizenry' about the gang-members swarming the streets? Griping from the Snakes about whatever it is that's got so many of them gathered on the edges of their territory (or even 'excited banter' for that matter)?...

Nyx, I'm sure, is all eyes, ears, and treachery and, as such, would be listening as keenly as looking.

Subject: What a Sea-prise!

The sight that greeted the Twilight Elf as he peered from the mouth of the alley and into the streets was not quite what he had been expecting; rather than the usual assortment of watchers, scouts, and low-ranking thugs that were often the standard fare, here, the place now seemed awash with veteran Sea Snakes… Quite the assortment of enforcers amidst that lot, too, yes?… It was all very curious, this being but the fringes of the gang’s territory it made little sense as to why the likes of these would be so assembled here. Surely they haven’t been alerted to us, he mused, scrutinizing the milling throng for any subtle clues as to the preponderance of more experienced Sea Snakes in their midst, An incoming shipment of their drugs, perhaps, or a territorial clash with the Cloaks?

Recoiling deeper into the alley’s shadows, Nyx flashed a cunning smile at Spite. “Someone has been beating the grass, it seems, my sweet,” he whispered, “and the larger snakes are free of their nests. Curious that such a surge would coincide with our designs, don’t you think?”

His gaze returned again to the streets beyond their penumbral blind and he expressed to his recently acquired companion that, while the prevalence of these veteran Snakes likely had little to do with their own task, it could be quite a useful thing to know what was afoot in the rival organization and, should this gangland gathering be an enduring thing, it may even serve well enough to mask their mission and even deflect responsibility from the Hellkites to the Snakes should things go awry in the undertaking.

((room for interjections, replies, etc, throughout, of course…))

The melodic timbre of the DeMoria Demon’s voice, even in the hushed tones of alley-speak, sent a cool shiver of anticipation along his spine and his yellow eyes swept back to the shadows to regard her for a long moment… “Shall we play the game at which you and your sister are so adept, then,” he queried, a wicked grin ghosting over his features as he nodded towards the crowd on the street, “Bring us back one of those breeders, perhaps, so that we might bleed the knowledge from him?”

((Just kind of running with the ideas put forth in our PM convo, Gigi… Already had most of this written at the time and figured it wouldn't hurt to tack it up... edits and backposts as necessary. ))

Still struggling to get it wrapped up, honestly... I have no idea why but I've just had a major problem with getting myself back into the "Trek frame of mind" since my return. I've started writing posts, scrapped them because (in my mind, anyway) they were crap and 'not worth posting'... re-written, scrapped again, still unsatisfied... and the cycle just keeps repeating... Getting back into Mac's head, too, has given me fits in general and (though I never thought I'd say it) I just can't seem to write for him the way I used to (and want to)...

Wish I had a better explanation/excuse for you all but, I guess, it just comes down to the old 'nav computer' failing to keep me on course. No one to blame for the delays but me, folks... Sorry.

The DeMoria sisters are still in very rough pencils but should be ready for a preview soon.

Subject: Ack! Leave it to Eol...

Cay slips right up to the Goblin's back door while Nyx, on the other hand, has the distinct pleasure of stumbling into a Sea Snake convention... Niiiiice... typical Eol luck.

On the bright side, this could prove very interesting... already hints that there's much more to the goings on around Thanald than our illustrious Captain Dmitrova might've expected...

What say Glory? Do we antagonize the Snakes (divide and conquer, perhaps) or, mayhaps we should track Cay around to the backdoor of the place and eyeball her for a time... No sense in letting our little witch of the wharf stumble unexcpectedly into a seething throng of opposition and all that... ?

Son of Edit: My original intent in posting here, Lou, was to ask about the Zuun Plains you mentioned in that last post... Sounds to me like it may be the 'perfect' locale for Nyx's clan to have originated/inhabited. How far away from Drasnia would these plains be and, most important, would you mind if I 'centered' the yet-to-be-renamed 'mith'ganni' folk in that region?

Thanks, E.

Subject: Valdary - Bardess of Bhriuthainn

I'm not sure how many of us might remember an Innmate named Valdary from the 'Pre-Great Crash' days, even some of those of us who were around at the time may not have interacted with her to any great extent...

Anyway, in the days before the great crash, Valdary was quite the active poster hereabouts, contributing frequently to the building of a dwarven dictionary and entertaining us with her spectacular poetry, among other things. I came to know her quite well when she contributed some of her poetic works to my efforts in the Tale of the Wishgranter (she contributed more than poetry, of course... songs, some world-building input, hell, the woman practically established the entire history of the dwarven folk in my little world). As often happens around here, she and I became fast friends and would frequently banter back and forth about everything and nothing... I'm sure all of you know how that goes...

I lost contact with Val right after the 'Great Crash' and, even after the Inn was revived, didn't seem to be able to reach her and often wondered why she hadn't been back since... After the e-mail I received from her recently, I almost wish I hadn't wondered so much. As it turns out, dear Valdary has been diagnosed with terminal cancer and, according to her doctors, doesn't have much longer than 6 months or so left among us.

I'll not go into too much detail as to the content of the rest of the e-mail as, honestly, I'm choking a bit trying to get this post out... the intent of this, of course, is for me to ask you all to please pray for/meditate on/put out the good vibes for Valdary and her son Duncan.

All my thanks,
Eol
